Thanks Peter. I was working very much in the dark with these documents. I knew full well that the QL community would be quick to point out any errors (human nature, people are always quicker to point out errors than do anything themselves) - probably the best way of ensuring correct documentation on the QL scene I have found! Re: [Ql-Users] uQLX -- latest source?
I have some slightly modified code, and have included my working notes below, a few tips though, use a version 3.x of the gcc compiler thats the only way i get non segfaulting binaries, before u compile export/setenv (depending on your shell) CC="gcc-3.x.x -m32", most versions of linux i know still support some version of the 3.x compiler. Re: [Ql-Users] uqlx-win32
I'm wondering if cygz11-6.dll is in a developer version or in in an archived file which has to be user-expanded after download or something? Actually, the mailing list archive shows a message from Stephen Meech on this list back in 2004 with this exact problem. If Stephen is still on the list, can you let me know how you resolved the problem? It looks like it won't be possible to use Win-UQLX until this issue is resolved...or somebody can tell me where I went wrong. Nope, sorry, never did. In fact if you look back two months I posted messages when I tried again, within Linux itself and failed with even more difficult problems. Looks like my only choice now is to try running a Windows based emulator within Wine. I only went by what google threw up when I searched for cygz11-6.dll The closest I got was to install the whole lot of Cygwin. All 3GB of it, about 182,000 files. Using that (I thought I may as well use it as I'd only got it by making a mistake with the installer) I got as far as getting a uQLx-win startup for a couple of seconds before it just vanished. At that point I gave up. And spent ages uninstalling the whole lot. So much for uninstall, it left nearly 2,000 files and didn't remove entries from the start menu. I think I'll stick to QPC2...At least Marcel made Windows easy for us ;-) -- Dilwyn Jones ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

You'll need the Cygwin distribution to provide the Linux-like environment: www.cygwin.com Be careful, it can be a huge download of 50MB with 6,478 files to install as I found to my cost...oh to know what I'm doing with Linux and Cygwin :-(( Downloading everything by the sound of it! ... Go on, give it a go, then you can tell me what I'm doing wrong... ... Back to the drawing board I think...Only 36,195 files to uninstall! Ok, Cygwin as far as I remember gives you the opportunity to do a download only and to save the files in a given location. That is the best option. It doesn't install anything. It creates a multitude of entries in the START menu, which the installer doesn't uninstall. The "Uninstaller" leave about 1,900 files on your system. Do a full download (which I managed to do by mistake overnight - clicking on 'Default' 'Install' 'Reinstall' and 'Uninstall' in the installer is so sluggish it's gone many times round each option) it installed the whole lot overnight instead of uninstalling it (OK, my fault, I should have checked...). Bit of an eye opener realising it installed 3.31 GB of files, including 182,779 separate files (I promise I am not exagerating...). More to the point, Phoebus lists 6 essential files. Only 5 of these were in the COMPLETE installation, cygZ11-6.dll is not there and googling this file finds it come up time and time again as a problem, but interestingly nobody ever mentions a solution, they just tell you to "reinstall". Actually, very interestingly, after realising I'd accidentally downloaded the whole lot I had a go at starting a cygwin bash shell and oops it failed with a message about a missing font. Dear oh dear oh dear... I'm assuming you have downloaded everything under the sun as you have so many files to delete (simply go into the C drive and delete (shift delete) the cygwin directory - that's about the easiest way to delete it.) I tried the official uninstall until I realised that it had left about 1900 files on the hard disk. Then shift-delete got rid of the rest. You should have only selected the "stuff you need" but that's half the problem. Unless the UQLX files mention the bits of Cygwin that you need - how do you know? Just base and x-org (or x11). Off the top of my head, you probably need the C and/or C++ development & runtime files plus the base system and all of X (or XORG these days?). You need the development stuff to compile UQLX and the X/XORG files to run it in a graphical environment. Didn't want to recompile it...just wanted to run the thing! -- Dilwyn Jones ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
Re: [Ql-Users] uqlx-win32
I did get an earlier version running once, of uQLx-Win32, on a WIN98 machine, with the help of Phoebus at that time. I think this is the point - without help it can't be got running if you don't know about Cygwin environment. As only 6 files are needed, surely it would make more sense to just provide these? Probably not strictly legal packaging up 6 files from the package I guess but what fool is going to download hundreds of megabytes just to get 6 files to get a single emulator running? -- Dilwyn Jones ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

Norman Dunbar wrote: > Ok, Cygwin as far as I remember gives you the opportunity to do a > download only and to save the files in a given location. That is the > best option. It doesn't install anything. Ok, I'll try again! Once downloaded, yo can then run the installer again and tell it (but it should know) to do an install from a local repository. This way, if it messes up, you simply uninstall and then run the installer again. You don't need to be connected to the internet and if you are still on a dial-up link, it doesn't have to download everything again. That's how I used to do it years ago. I'd try it out at work and confirm all this, but our system is well tied down and we can't even connect to Cygwin these days - anything that hasn't been approved is unreachable. Install cygwin (all you need is base + X.Org) - Start a proper bash shell and give "startx". Now go to your winuqlx directory and after you remove all the XWin references from the uQLx.bat batch file you will only be left with : SET DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0 start qm.exe -f .uqlxrc Save it, run it and there you have it a window will appear within your X-Windows session with uQLx running Minerva (if you have the standard distribution) Cheers, Phoebus P.S.
