Oh, for heaven's sake, why would you need a custom transformer?
My dear Nasta, have you become so disillusioned that you don't see the
*fun* in winding yer own transformer? ;P
It's a great way to pass an evening :o)

Probably OK between consenting QLs in private though ;-)
The late Joe Haftke used to have a good reply in favour of his use of
GOTOs each time I nagged him about not needing them in S*BASIC.
I remember there were two power supplies for the ZX81; the one supplied
with the basic kit, and the one they said you needed if you bought the
ZX printer. Maybe the more powerful one was the same as the Spectrum's.
I'm not sure, I never had a Spectrum :(

P.S. The basic ZX81 power supply had the plug pins protruding from the
body. The upgrade power supply for ZX81 + Printer, had leads for both
mains and DC.

The zx-81 power supply has a 3.5 jack plug the ones used by mono headphones. The
spectrum power supply has a different plug i don't know the name of these they are
round and have a hole in the middle. You cant plug them into a zx-81.
To cut things short if the plug fits the zx-81 its a zx-81

As for US QL-ers wanting to buy a QXL rather than get one free (?) I have a

and I just remembered: I have a 40MHz 68040 that would work on it too...
