A lot of the folks in the Arkansas Spinal Cord Commission's support
group use the same chair as Debra and really like it. Most of these I'm
thinking of are on workman's compensation and that's how they get their

[QUAD-L] the wheelchair junkie

2017-06-19 Thread DEBRA DEW
I just wanted to share something with you that I was reading about another
quadriplegic named Mark Smith. He had a website called the wheelchair junkie
and it was his advice that told me what was the Cadillac of power chairs in the
nineteen nineties so I would know which one to buy. Mark would get
demonstration models of each power chair and use them for a while to figure out
which one was the best. I would never have known what to buy without his advice
and he was certainly right on. I just discovered he died at 40 years old from
cerebral palsy. I just wanted to show you a line from the website that someone
wrote… At the deceased’s request, no service will be held, as he “has a better
place to be that day” – presuming that The Pearly Gates is wheelchair
accessible, and Saint Peter lets him in.

How wonderful that he knew he had a better place to be that day..

This will be my 3rd chair and and my 1st two were Invacare Action Arrow Storms.
They are no longer making this chair :(

I hate change! I went to an evaluation appointment and was told the chair I
want (Invacare Torque 3) is considered a Group 4 chair

And it would be difficult to get. They recommended a Permobil C350 or Quantum

They told me that an Invacare plant had been shut down by the FDA ( I think
that’s right) and their concern is if I got the

Invacare they might quit making parts for it.

I feel they probably make more $$ off the other two chairs (I just really have

My last 2 chairs have been invacare storm series also with rear wheel drive, I
just had to get a new chair and wanted the same, since they work for us plus
fit in our mini astro wheelchair van..They told me everyone including
invacare is getting away from the rear wheel drive chairs, so my supplier
ordered me a chair from Pride Mobility that still makes a rear wheel drive,
They use Quantam Electronics I think. So far I am very happy with this new
chair except my legs are so long that I don't have very much clearance from the
floor...so I have to recline back a few inches when going over ramps, thresholds
or outside, I'm now used to that but most people would not have this problem
probably. I love the Electronics...they have a quick change button that can
switch from tilt/leg lift or back into drive and then 4 speeds of drive, this
chair is fast goes 7.5 mph. It even has a built in clock and how many miles you
driveSince I got it in February I have put 91.3 miles on it. The tires are
extremely good and show zero wear so far.( my invacare tires would be at
least a quarter of the way worn out already) so these must be very well made.
I now have my last chair going as a back up but my old back up chair I am
giving away if anyone wants it or needs partsIt works and has the charger
with it but has set so long It would need the batteries replaced...It is also
and invacare storm rear wheel drive chair with tilt and leg lift, there is a
place online called Wholesare batteries that sells all the same batteries we
need for much, much cheaper than the suppliers do. Dan H. St. Louis, Mo. area.

Like I was saying earlier, you have to basically live in the chair for who
knows how many years.  You should be making that choice.  I'm in a Pride chair
now, after two Invacares.  If I hadn't been steered away from Invacare, that's
what I would have.  I don't like this Pride chair.  Would I be happier in an
Invacare?  I don't know but it would've been completely my decision without any
steering by others.

Re: [QUAD-L] New Chair

2017-06-19 Thread Danny Hearn
Dan H. St. Louis, Mo. area.

Thank you for your input!! I called Invacare last fall so looks like I’ll be
calling again. I know my vendor has

An issue w/ Invacare because they started shipping parts orders together
instead of separated.

I think that's BS. Go to the Invacare site. Last time I went there they were
fine. It may take more to get what you want but get what you want. I didn't.
I listened to a specific individual who steered me away from Invacare, even
though my last two chairs were Invacare and I loved them. Don't settle. Do
research.
