Hey thanks, yeah i bet it's exciting..are they goingto help me with tranfers
on the plane? ..i have flown once in 1984 ..and my exwife helped me ..but i
will be alone . And will the airline allow me to take my electric chair? I
remember an issue with my batteries in '84 and i had to leave them . Someone
said they allow gel batterys. I think that's what i have.
When i tell some people i'm planning to do this they look at me like i've
lost my mind.

Flying international, is more exciting and adventuresome than flying domestic
for an TAB or a DAB.
Consider the daily services you require and hope that you've planned ahead when
you arrive in Finland and hope they speak better English then you Finnish.
Besides the good time and all the fun you will have, make sure that you have
back up medicine, just in case or know where you can purchase in Finland.

Expect to have a great time and I hope you let us know.

I didn't want to give you the impression that your endeavor would be
trouble-free as you ventured from your secure, comfort zone.
You have quite a bit of homework ahead of you to cement the paperwork,
before you leave the safety of your home. When traveling abroad, make sure
that
you have a copy of your health records and doctors and hospitals in Finland,
don't know you from Chris Reeve and there is always a chance that you might
become a visitor to one of Finland's hospitals.
I can't imagine you casing your fate to the wind but I don't know you
well enough. I'm sure that others are also wondering about your goals and how
you hope to achieve them in Finland, besides vacations and having a great
time.
I am surprised that you have committed yourself to a voyage to Finland and
still don't know some of the guidelines established by the air industry for
safe passage. Best to ask your airline their policies, and who will have the
pleasure of transferring you from and to your airchair and what you should pack

they should pre-board you so you shouldn't feel that you are holding

All airlines seem to try to do their best which is probably why I can't
recomend one. It is important to crate your chair right and be sure it can
survive a few critically stupid moments. Definitely disconnect your gell cell
batteries and have someone at the other end to reconnect them. This only sounds
simple. Always call ahead to be sure you can rent a chair in case your chair
wins a free trip around the world. If you can sit in a non customized chair I
highly recommend doing so and just have a chair waiting. Take your roho in the
overhead. If you somehow turn up on skidrow you have made a major mistake in
chosing a travel agent.

I -we flew across the country 3 times. I have to say that it was a big
hassle for us. Fortunately, my chairs didn't end up somewhere else but what we
did
was keep the manual back for transferring and the attendants helped with
getting my power chair ready to stow. Disconnecting the batteries wasn't
enough,
they had to come out and be put in special boxes. I reserved the 1st seat in
coach because my manual didn't fit any further. My husband would transfer me
to the seat and someone would take the manual away to be stowed. We did keep
the cushion with us. I was 1st to get on and last to get off. I always felt
sorry for the people behind us while they had to wait for all that

 But we
made it without losing the chairs. These trips were before 9-11, I can't
imagine what it would be like to fly now.

My company rents  ramps. We simply need to know the duration of the rental;
shipping location(s) and what type of ramp you are interested in (i.e.
portable, folding etc.). Contact us toll-free at (800) 876-RAMP (7267) for
more
information.

Hi W-

We will rent ramps to anyone in the United States and how we handle
shipping is we issue a call tag and charge for shipping to and from the
user. When you finish the rental contact us and we will send the return
shipping label so all you have to do is put the ramp back in the box and
ship it back to us.

RE: [QUAD-L] Air Travel

2007-03-05 Thread poajoan
Hi Paul

I have flown Southwest quite a few times, and they have been excellent in
meeting my needs. I flew United twice, but as they broke my wheelchair both
times, I decided to try another airline. Oh yes, United also lost my
wheelchair for almost 10 days. We left Dallas to fly to Reno and my
wheelchair flew to Los Angeles. If a friend of mine hadn't seen my
wheelchair, going round and round with the suitcases, I don't know when I
would've gotten it back! She didn't think anything of it, except that it
looked similar to mine, when a friend told her I didn't have my chair. The
Reno office would not believe me, until I finally went to their office with
a picture of my chair-serial numbers-etc. etc.. It still took four more days
to get my chair back.

Since I use chin controller, I always take that off. My United trips taught
me to take the armrests off and duct tape them to the seat. Of course always
take your seat cushion off and put it in the overhead baggage, if there is
room.

Good luck and have fun

Keep in mind that the airlines are not covered by ADA, but rather the
Federal Air Carrier Act.
Know it and know your rights. Plan and plan well. Know how to disassemble
your chair and reassemble it by heart, cuz the air goons merely guess and
sometimes they are right. Know what is covered and what is not so there
are
no surprises out there. Most is done with great intentions. Some is not.
Know you rights and what is expected of you...
