I would start by watching this one:

It is less than six months old by now.
And this one is also interesting:

Thank you so much for your answers !

Okay, I have thought of the "Copy To Other AppVM". But sadly I didn't try
it. I stopped when I reached "AppVM", as I thought it wouldn't work for
template VM's.

You're right, I should write my notes on the PC to begin with and first
publish them after I get it up and running as intended - I was to happy
about finally gone so far and would like to help others who would like to
be able to do the same, as soon as possible as I have wasted much time
trying to find out how to get to this step.

I have found another multimedia manager called "Exaile", and I have
downloaded it (from here: https://www.exaile.org/ ) and installed it. But
when I click on its shortcut in the "Qube Menu", it doesn't start. On the
front page it says it's for "GTK+".

Is it possible to run "GTK+" applications in a Debian 10 (or a Fedora 30)
template in Qubes OS 4.0.3 immediately, or do I have to install a package
to run it and if so which one ?
I have tried to search the web for an answer, and also in here. But I
haven't found one.

You might try to create a Live USB stick with the Boot-Repair tool, and see if
that tool may create a new, functional boot menu for you, in case there is no
problem with the Qubes installation itself.

[qubes-users] Re: "Qubes Architecture Next Steps: The GUI Domain" by Marek Marczykowski-Górecki & Marta Marczykowska-Górecka

2020-03-20 Thread Eva Star
Amazing. :-D
Can we have control of audio output from appvms from Qubes Manager? For
example, to create new appvms by default with audio off and to switch it
on/off from Qubes Manager GUI? I'm about attack vector to our 3th party
devices like mobile phones near Qubes machine when some appvm browser will
play sound with encrypted ID in it and mobile phone/Siri/Cordana and other
voice assistance or hidden mics will take this sound and identify us
through non encrypted channel. So I think it's the meter of time to give
Qubes users more easy to use control of appvms sound and disable sound as
much as possible by default.

[qubes-users] Tor on Whonix: A couple of questions

2020-03-20 Thread Anil
I have been using Qubes OS for more than an year now. I use Tor
Browser in Whonix DVM (earler anon-whonix, but now in Whonix DVM). I
mostly use it for reading Google News, because in these times of
targeted servicing (i.e., personalization), I do not want to be
reading new that is specially assembled for me by an algorithm relying
on my personal data. The news is not about me, it should have nothing
to do with me, not even how the news items are put together. (By the
way, the same applies to any recommendation system). I want to decide,
without someone biasing my selection, what news to read and what not
to read.

(I know using Google News already introduces some bias, but I don't
solely use Google News for getting my news. I also happen to be
involved with some research related to published news.)

What I have observed on my computer (any computer, including those on
which Intel ME is neutered) is that Google News almost always (>99% of
the time) open with the US news. I don't think that is how it should
be working. If there is true anonymity, the page should open randomly
to any country and any language. That does not happen, at least not
for me.

I tried creating a new Whonix DVM template and checking whether it
still happens. It does (that is, both of the problems mentioned
above).

I do know for sure that there is plenty of research on
de-anonymization of tor traffic. It can be easily searched for on
Google Scholar.

I am not sure whether this it is Qubes specific or a problem related
to Tor in general. I personally think the latter is more likely, due
to de-anonymization.

Another related question is about a problem I am facing, even in newly
installed (but updated) Qubes OS Tor Browser on Whonix (even DVM), is
that when it starts, everything seems to be working. After some time,
either the browser crashes, or it freezes or it works intermittently.
Now, for the last few weeks, the context menu (on right click) becomes
corrupted (there are two items visible, the rest are invisible,
although I can still use them by using keyboard arrows and pressing
enter). I use two of these invisible options to bookmark all the
pages.

I tried creating a new Whonix DVM template and checking whether it
still happens. It does (that is, both of the problems mentioned
above).

The second one I have not yet seen on the computer with neutered Intel
ME, but that may be because I have not really started using it so far
(I only got it recently).

I don't take all the precautions that some Qubes users suggest, but I
do take a lot of precautions (increasingly more, including changing
habits).

Can anyone suggest what could be the problem (particularly for the
second question, as the first one may be due to other reasons)? Is it
a bug or is it specific to my network?

Regards,

अनिल एकलव्य

[qubes-users] Qubes Updater doesn't update

2020-03-20 Thread 'trichel' via qubes-users
Qubes 4.03
Qubes updater runs normally without errors, but doesn't actually update
*Debian* templates. Same problem with Whonix templates. *Fedora* templates get
updated normally. No further details or error messages are provided by the
Updater. Qubes Updater also doesn't notice any updates are available for Debian
templates, resulting in outdated Templates without the user knowing.

Updating Debian templates with the Qube Manager just works, but the problem
persists.

Maybe something bugging in my config, or has anybody experienced something
similar? Any advice what to do?

[qubes-users] Newbie question on disposable VMs?

2020-03-20 Thread viktor . ransmayr
Hello Qubes community,

I'm only a short-term user of Qubes-OS - and - I'm very satisfied so far. -
Thanks a lot for all your work on this important project!

I'd like to use disposable VMs as a means to efficiently 'simulate' E2E
installation program experience for in-experienced users.

So far my approach has been to create persistent VMs for it - but - I'd
like to optimize/ simplify that now by using disposable VMs ...

Now finally my question:

*I am not able to/ I do not know how to copy content from a shell/ terminal
in a disposable VM to a file in a regular VM :-(*

Is this a deliberate design decision - or - what am I missing?

With kind regards,

VR

[qubes-users] Unable to open mtp device. Android shows up in sys-usb only

2020-03-20 Thread xyzo
I need to transfer files from my Android smartphone (Opo7). I can successfully
attach my Android phone to a Debian
appvm. Inside the appvm, It will list my phone when I open a file manager but
it won't mount it. It says "unable to mount device USB:0xx" I installed most of
the mtp pkgs. (Mtp-tools libmtp9 libmtp-common libmtp-dev libmtp-dev
libmtp-runtime) but still gives the same error..

However, I can access my phone through sys-usb vm. So now I have to transfer my
stuff from appvm to sys-usb and copy it over to my phone Which defeats the
purpose of having sys-usb. Any help is appreciated
