[qubes-users] VM Manger VM App change keyboard?

2016-05-28 Thread 09183-4091834-0918234-0918432-098
Hello,

the live Qubes QS DVD is great!

But humans are very creative and any keyboard layout is different.

How I can change the keyboard language direct in the VM manger for a single VM
or the dom0 / all Apps?

Kind Regards

Unfortunately, there is currently no easy way to do this, but it's
possible:

No, R3.1 uses Fedora 20 in dom0.

P.S. - Please don't top post.

Re: [qubes-users] Everything is Tiny and Buggy in Display

2016-05-28 Thread 01101
Well... that was a waste of time and effort trying to get this OS working
on my laptop in a usable manner... It's kind of ridiculous that there is no
good HiDPI support... will eagerly await 3.2 release when full HiDPI is
supported. Thanks for your help.

This is not really related. My problem is PV related (didn't tested
HVM). And most notably this is a direct regression of the update to xen
4.6.1-15.fc20. xen 4.6.0-13.fc20 works fine.

Thanks but how can I install a different kernel in qubes R3.1?

this only lists available kernels 4.4.1 and 4.1.13
qubes-dom0-update --enablerepo=qubes-dom0-unstable --action=list kernel-
qubes-vm

to use fedora 20 I have to use qubes R2?

Ok, that's being tracked here:

Take a look at the comments on this issue:

https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/1060

It sounds like you might be experiencing something similar, so I would
try some of the tips mentioned there. For example, try KDE fail safe
session, try disabling desktop effects in KDE, try a different kernel,
etc.

I haven't tried XFCE with Qubes in a long time, but last I checked, it
was installed by default. If so, you should just be able to log in
with that DE.

Updating the (very old) XFCE documentation is on our to-do list:

https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/1923

In the meantime, I'd suggest searching for information on how to
install XFCE in baremetal Fedora 20, since the process should be
similar.

ah I didn't see the option to select xfce from login screen (so tiny
because of screen issue). Just checked with xfce now and issue persists
with xfce as well

Re: [qubes-users] Everything is Tiny and Buggy in Display

2016-05-28 Thread 01101
Sorry it is somewhat difficult to explain. According to the hardware
compatibility list, someone with the thinkpad x1 carbon (different gen than
mine, I have latest) explains a similar issue:

> HDPI screen. Everything is tiny, to the point of being difficult to
> see. I can't see any simple way to configure this in either desktop

although when I try to change resolution, or if the computer falls asleep,
the black screen appears underneath wherever the curser is located, by this
I mean, everything under the curser becomes black, (the full width of the
screen down)

I tried to run the command to install XFCE, I get "Group XFCE does not
exist" (btw I always still get the yum deprecated / replaced with dnf
message as well)

Re: [qubes-users] Wallpaper Issue

2016-05-28 Thread Chris Laprise

Hello,

I am trying to change my wallpaper to a custom image that isn't
already preloaded on qubes and I am having a hell of a time. I try to
right click and select set as background, but when i hit apply, the
screen goes away and nothing happens. I tried to copy the file from
the domain that I am in (anon-whonix) to dom0 like it say in the
instructions on your website, but it tells me to go to the
home/user/Qubes-Incoming, which gives me an error saying that that
directory doesn't exist. I've also tried to copy it through the GUI to
dom0 and it says it copied, but when i try to open the file manager or
the wallpaper settings, the image is also not in there. I've tried
going on the subreddit, reading both instructions via gui and command
line, and still am getting the errors of the file location not
existing or it telling me it copied when it in fact didn't. Could you
please tell me what i am doing wrong here as i am at a loss.

Thanks,

Alex

Setting wallpaper in an appvm won't work; The file has to be moved to
dom0 first. If you're not sure about the safety of the image, the easist
safe way to do it is to view the image in the vm then press the Print
Screen key and save the screenshot to the dom0 home folder. Then you can
go into System Settings and select the file. But you may want to crop
the image afterward.

Can you clarify "tiny"? Is that just a HiDPI issue [1]? Have you tried
playing around with the DPI/display settings in KDE/Xfce?

Can you clarify the "weird black screen issue"? Does that mean your
monitor blanks out? Or is it "screen" as in "screen door" (i.e., black
lines superimposed on your screen)?

Can you be more specific?

What kinds of errors? Are there error messages? If so, what do they
say (verbatim)? When do they occur?

I'm not sure I understand. Is this some kind of special procedure
required by your particular needs? I don't think I've ever had a need
to install firmware in VMs in that sense. Or, if I did, I was able to
do so via a package manager like yum or dnf.

It's possible that I'm simply ignorant about this topic. (But if
that's true, it's also possible that I'm representative of the
majority of Qubes users, in which case there may not be a pressing
need to accommodate this.)

Thanks for the report! I think for something like this, qubes-issues
might be best (but it's up to Marek's preference). For example, how
closely is your report related to this existing issue?

https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/1659

If you think it's close enough to be posted as a comment on that
issue, please feel free to do so (or I can do it for you). If it's too
different, then feel free to open a new issue (or I can do it for you).

[qubes-users] Everything is Tiny and Buggy in Display

2016-05-28 Thread 01101
I have come so close to getting everything working... and everything works
fine except the display... everything on screen is very tiny and has a
weird black screen issue when recovering from sleep.

Is there ANY possible way to get this fixed? Here are my specs:

I have Intel HD Graphics 520 and WQHD(2560 x 1440) display

am using qubes R3.1 with 4.4.10 unstable kernel installed (because stable
version has issues with wifi..etc)

please help!
Thanks

More likely pseudonymous - safer assumption anyway.

Tor does not support UDP traffic.

[qubes-users] using a vpn through tor

2016-05-28 Thread tom.tomson

hi.
since many sites discriminate tor users (aka block them, e.g.:
https://blog.torproject.org/category/tags/cloudflare), i want to use a
vpn after i routed through tor. (since i get the vpn anonymously per tor
and bitcoin, i should still be anonym (or is there a mistake?)).

so i have the following setup
appvm->vpn->whonix-gw->sys-fw->sys-net
the vpn uses udp.
and i think this is the problem, it seems these packages get blocked and
my vpn can't open.

any idea how i can fix this? #
do i need to activate udp in the whonix-gw?
do i need to use tcp for the vpn connection?
does anyone else have a similar working setup?
if so:
what did you do to make it work?
what protocol are you using?(i am currently trying to use openvpn with
tun and udp)

thanks for any help.

[qubes-users] can't build stretch

2016-05-28 Thread tom.tomson

hi.
i do the following to build a stretch template:
sudo dnf install git
git clone https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-builder.git
cd qubes-builder/
./setup
i press y to install all dependencies
yes (add qubes key)
yes (add marek's key)
select 3.1 release -> ok
QubesOS repo (stable) -> ok
yes (only build templates)
select build plugins: fedora + debian (deselected salt) -> ok
yes (get sources)
ok (after getting sources)
select template stretch+gnome ->ok
make install-deps
make get-sources
make qubes-vm

this generates this error:
Makefile.generic:20: *** Building packages for stretch not supported by
any of configured plugins. Stop.

Makefile:208: recipe for target 'vmm-xen-vm' failed
make: *** [vmm-xen-vm] Error 1

is debian not the build plugin used to build stretch?
in builder.conf i have these lines:
BUILDER_PLUGINS += builder-debian
DISTS_VM += stretch+gnome
so the debian builder is really active.

here sb had the same problem (idk if it was ever resolved)
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/qubes-users/stretch/qubes-users/e2YNhUv-2uA/eAGLmXCuOwAJ
here sb was able to build it (at least had a different error, it seems
in a later buildstep)

[qubes-users] Graphics Trouble on a ThinkPad T510

2016-05-28 Thread Eric Lynema
I was attempting to install qubes 3.1 on my ThinkPad T510, but it keeps
running into errors, and graphics glitches. I had run an older version
(2.x) just fine at one point, but wanted to load up 3.x. Any ideas on
troubleshooting steps I could try.

Please note that I have tried the graphics safe mode, and the text based
installer without any positive results.

[qubes-users] Installing additional firmware

2016-05-28 Thread Achim Patzner
Hi!

Is it only me or are there some more people who seriously hate having to add
firmware for virtual machines? Is there a better way than moving the image into
some trustworthy machine, extending it and moving it back to dom0? I’ve been
doing this for the sixth time now and I’m getting a bit tired by it. I guess we
should petition for adding at least firmware for everything Realtek with USB
(and maybe Ralink and Intel) to the standard Qubes installation.

[qubes-users] Xen 4.6.1 (testing repo) breaks PCI attachment

2016-05-28 Thread HW42
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi,

with Xen 4.6.1-15.fc20 (which got recently uploaded to the testing repo)
VMs with attached PCI devices don't boot anymore (at least on my
machine).

When I try to boot a VM with attached PCI devices it crashes
immediately. Attached the xen dmesg log of a crash.

Both dom0 and the VM are running the 4.1.24-9.pvops.qubes kernel.

HW42

PS: Do you prefer reports regarding problems with testing packages on
qubes-users or qubes-devel?

Re: [qubes-users] How Can I Update Kernel Offline?

Thanks Andrew. I tried the command before assigning usb controller but
receive the same error. Checking dmesg, I receive the following: "Driver
tried to write to a read-only config space...see permissive attribute in
sysfs..etc"

[qubes-users] Wallpaper Issue

2016-05-28 Thread 'Alexander Earnshaw' via qubes-users
Hello,
I am trying to change my wallpaper to a custom image that isn't already
preloaded on qubes and I am having a hell of a time. I try to right click and
select set as background, but when i hit apply, the screen goes away and
nothing happens. I tried to copy the file from the domain that I am in
(anon-whonix) to dom0 like it say in the instructions on your website, but it
tells me to go to the home/user/Qubes-Incoming, which gives me an error saying
that that directory doesn't exist. I've also tried to copy it through the GUI
to dom0 and it says it copied, but when i try to open the file manager or the
wallpaper settings, the image is also not in there. I've tried going on the
subreddit, reading both instructions via gui and command line, and still am
getting the errors of the file location not existing or it telling me it copied
when it in fact didn't. Could you please tell me what i am doing wrong here as
i am at a loss.

Thanks,
Alex

Exactly what lacks in Qubes documentation

Even as an overview, its pretty obtuse... like drinking a cappuccino and
getting nothing but foam.

Readers will think its just Linux VMs that force you to take an extra step when
cutting and pasting. No mention of the significance of Xen or hardware
isolation, and he mistakes isolation for "compartmentalization". Compartments
can have many attributes; they can be like chicken wire or tissue paper.

It also feels like it was written for a far less technical audience, not for
Linux Journal.

There's been a lot of discussion about this lately. In brief:
This (or something close) is planned for Qubes 4.0. For details,

[qubes-users] Disposable netvm?

2016-05-28 Thread Bill Wether
It seems to me that it would improve Qubes security if sys-net were a dispVM.
That way, whatever nasties one picked up from the hotel wifi, for instance,
would be gone at the next boot.

Thoughts?

Yes. To clarify, the procedure is to reinstall Qubes, then do this (or
a variation of this, depending on your situation):

To work around this, you can use this command in dom0:

qvm-prefs -s sys-net pci_strictreset false

However, you should be aware of the security implications of doing this:
