I am just speculating here, but it might be that the installer
environment is missing some kernel module needed to control the fan
speed or gauge the temperature sensors. This may or may not be
an indication that the problem will persist, so I suggest you continue
the installation and see whether it does.

Depending on your laptop model, chipset and firmware support there are
several utilities available that enable you to control the fan speed and
CPU throttling, both in the Fedora package repositories as well as
elsewhere on the web.

[qubes-users] Qubes and USB Ethernet adapter

2017-06-15 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Hi,

I have a new Asus laptop which comes with no integrated Ethernet, but an
USB Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

I wonder if this will be compatible with Qubes' Net VM, or if I will
need to allocate the complete USB controller to the net VM - which would
be extremely annoying to me...

Any clue appreciated.

Kind regards.

You want to first download the openvpn config from pia's
Download/Support page:
Choose Advanced OpenVPN SSL Usage Guides, then OpenVPN Configuration

Then follow the Qubes doc "iptables and CLI" instructions here:

[qubes-users] Qubes installation hangs at 717/930

2017-06-15 Thread interestedtesting
I have an ASUS computer, GTX 970M and an i7-6700, 8 GB RAM. Installation stops
at 717/930 at installing some qubes-salts-mgmt (something along those lines).
The circle keeps spinning, which indicates it is being installed, but it gets
stuck there for a long time and just won't continue. I have Qubes installed and
running on my HP desktop so I decided to try it on my ASUS laptop, and when I
installed it on my desktop it did not hang at any particular step for more than
a few minutes.

I tried googling the issue and read that it could be that Qubes takes a fairly
long time to install on certain hardware but the reason I don't want to leave
my computer on for too long during the installation process is because the fan
is really loud, even though my computer doesn't get warm or anything.

Any idea what it could be and how I can go about resolving the issue?

[qubes-users] USB-C docking & ethernet fun with the Asus SimPro and MiniDocks

2017-06-15 Thread Kristian Elof Sørensen
Hello

Using an Asus B9440U laptop connected via USB-C to an Asus SimPro dock
and an Asus MiniDock, I see some ports work, some not and some weird
behavior.

Qubes R3.2
kernel 4.4.14-11
xen 4.6.1

Having followed https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/usb/ the following works:

 + USB stick
 + SD card
 + USB keyboard + mouse
 + VGA + HDMI
 - Gigabit Ethernet
? Audio + Displayport - untested so far

Both docks show up as devices in dom0 qvm-usb output:

[@dom0 ~]$ qvm-usb
sys-usb:2-1.3 1fc9:500d NXP_SIMPRODOCK_PD_2.100_098e0695
sys-usb:2-8 8087:0a2b 8087_0a2b
sys-usb:2-2.2 2109:0101
VIA_Technologies_Inc._USB_2.0_BILLBOARD_0001

NXP being the SimPro Dock and VIA the MiniDock. The third device is the
internal USb device in the laptop.

When I plugin an USB stick or SD card or keyboard or mouse, they do
show up as individual devices in the dom0 qvm-usb output when plugged
into the MiniDock, but not when plugged into the Simpro Dock.

In both cases they do show up in the sys-usb lsusb output

In both cases they work fine.

The gigabit ethernet device do show up in the sys-usb lsusb output, but
since it does not show up in the dom0 qvm-usb output I cannot attach it
to a vm.

[@sys-usb ~]$ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 033: ID 0b95:1790 ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88179 Gigabit Ethernet
...

Any idea how usb devices can work fine while not showing up in the dom0
qvm-usb output?

How do I get the gigabit ethernet device in the SimPro Dock to work?
Not knowing its device ID I cannot attach it to a VM.

Finally, another idea: I believe it was Vik who said that on newer Intel
video cards, the i915 driver actually *wasn't* being used in 4.4 because
it did not support newer cards, and a generic video driver was being
automatically used instead. So maybe that i915 support for newer
hardware exists in 4.9 and is actually being used, but is buggy on
Haswell or newer which is why it only appears now.

That said, again, I've been running 4.9 on Sandy Bridge for months and
the issue didn't show up until I started using Debian 9 templates, so
I'm not completely convinced yet that it's 4.9 alone that is the issue.
It could be a combination of things, or Qubes video code interacting
with newer X alongside the i915 driver included in the 4.9 kernel.

Which is why it would really be useful if someone with an AMD or Nvidia
video card could try the same set up and see if this rendering issue
appears or not. If it doesn't, then it'd help rule out if this is a
general problem, or just a problem that appears with Intel video cards.

Another thing you could test is running that app suite on a Fedora 23
template (and even Debian 8 if those apps exist there) to see if the
problem appears. If it does not, then it's more evidence that newer
versions of X might be part of the issue.

Nothing centralized that tracks all 4.9 issues/regressions that I'm
aware of, outside of this message thread. Some tickets have been opened
up as needed for specific issues (for example, full-range slub_debug
being enabled exposing a kernel bug that breaks SSL connections) though.

Sometimes comments or feedback are posted under the relevant kernel
update ticket whenever a new one is pushed out:

https://github.com/QubesOS/updates-status/issues

One thing to test would be a variety of different 4.9 releases; while
I'm still leaning towards an X or interaction with newer X issue, it
could also be a regression that was introduced upstream. And it would be
nice to know if this issue is happening on video cards that *aren't*
Intel. Really, the only kernel config option that changed between 4.4
and 4.9 for Intel cards is that preliminary hardware support option
being changed to enabled by default. If disabling that doesn't fix it,
there there are either bigger issues at play in the kernel *or* the
issue is somewhere else.

Also, a greater list of specific KDE apps to test would be helpful if
you could provide that.

[qubes-users] Fan too loud during install

2017-06-15 Thread interestedtesting
I am trying to install Qubes on my ASUS laptop but the fan is just too loud
during the install. Is there any way I can fix this?

Even if it's not fixable during the install itself, I fear the fan will
continue to work very hard if I manage to successfully boot into the new system

Thanks.

well this is such a basic feature I would go crazy if that would not
work...

I'm using this feature from the beginning. And it was always working
in general. I remember for some broken kernel releases. But this
feature should work in general. As it is working with my setup, in
case of kernel VM 4.4 - but not in case of VM kernel 4.9

Do we already have any git issues about 4.9 and its currently known

Thanks. I don't really use Fedora, but I'll set up a test VM once my
laptop is finished converting this Debian 8 template to 9. Can you list
some apps that this happens with so I can test across a variety of
templates? I'm still leaning towards an X issue, but maybe it's always
been there since Fedora 24, even under kernel 4.9. But I would assume if
that was the case, then more people would have spoken up by now.

It might; if you could try it in both dom0 and vm (and maybe different
combinations if you have the time), that'd be useful to help rule things
out. It's toggled on by default to work around this:

https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=intel-skl-prelim-support

but maybe it's no longer an issue with 4.9.

Do you happen to have a firewall outside your computer that blocks ICMP? If so,
you might actually be seeing a problem where MTU discovery fails. That often
manifests itself in this way.

If that's the case, then fix your firewall so that it doesn't block ICMP.

Maybe it is a know issue, but:
online netvm change on a disposable VM is also broken on the latest
4.9 VM kernel. (Qubes Manager shows it is changed, but not working in
practice)

I believe this setting will not affect this chipset. But will try if I
have a chance. (This is my only Qubes Laptop atm and using it for
production)

And to follow up, I just installed 4.9.32 and haven't noticed it as
much, but I've only put in 10 minutes of testing so I can't say for sure
if it was a regression in 4.9.31.

I can't play around with this until later today, but in the meantime,
what graphics hardware are you running, Zrubi? And which version of 4.4
are you running where things work fine? And finally if you can, if it's
an Intel card, can you try booting with this kernel option to see if it
makes a difference?

Curious: For those apps that exhibit that behavior, are they running on
Debian 9 or Fedora 25 templates?

I'll be honest, I primarily run Debian templates and in anticipation of
the official release of Debian 9 this week, I've been slowly migrating
my Debian 8 templates to Debian 9, and I've started to notice that
behaviour as well. It does *not* happen under Debian 8 on kernel 4.9.
And I've been running 4.9 kernels in dom0 since December. I *have* been
running Debian 9 as my sys-net for months, though, and the
NetworkManager applet seems fine. I haven't tested extensively, but for
me, the IBus (for keyboard langauge switching) icon has a black overlay,
and when I play music through Rhythmbox on Debian 9, the pop up message
that displays when a new song is played is a little corrupted (but that
never happened on the same kernel on Debian 8).

Since it works fine in Debian 8 (I haven't tested much with any
Fedoras), I'm wondering if it's less a kernel issue and more of an issue
with newer X or how Qubes integrates with newer X (but I guess if it
works properly on 4.4, it may be a combination of the three; don't know
how to fix it though).

Intel Sandy Bridge is my system; haven't tested on other hardware.

I've spent some time to defend idea that I'll get qubes certified
laptop paid by my organisation.
Are there any ideas for anonymouse delivery? I am okay to pay for that.

> And you are planning to buy something from the United States of America
> (known for the very problem you are asking about),
No idea how to get that laptop in any other relatively secure way.
It is shipped worldwide but

> have it delivered to
> the Russian Federation (not a very believable defender of citizen
> privacy),
Yep. This is my second motherland since USSR has been killed by gorby & company.

> and believe it will arrive safe and secure?
The vendor should provide some security check algorithm I guess..
I beleave in Qubes. I beleave Qubes team.
Could anyone from Qubes team buy such a certified laptop for me and
make delilvery using my money?
The company I currently work with is okay with any delivery method I choose.

The url with paper for qubes certified laptop delivery:
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/12/qubes-os-will-ship-pre-installed-on-purisms-security-focused-librem-13-laptop/
How can I check for "hardware implant free" state of delivered laptop?
I'd reinstall Qubes so software implants are out of this discussion.

> Mmmm... I would not try that :/
Does anyone know any tor covered anonymous delivery service?
The question with tor initiated anonymous delivery is reputation.
Laptop costs about 2k$.

> And I'm sorry, but apart from suspicion I can't really give you any
> actual advice :( best of luck for your next laptop
I know that there's no laptop store that sells that laptops in Russia.
I also know that Qubes QA team should not be bothered by bugreports
from non-certified hardware .

So better I should buy a laptop from compatible but not certified list?

It looks like buying Qubes certified laptop via any well known to me
american citizen could be better idea.

But laptop would be delivered cross-customs anyway..

Is there a US law restriction for delivery of librem13 or librem 15 to
Russia ? I guess not or not yet. At least their buying form has
Russian Federation in destination country list )

https://www.crowdsupply.com/purism/librem-15
https://www.crowdsupply.com/purism/librem-13

As I guess librem-15 is the same, but not yet certified? The Qubes
ceritified list has only librem-13 .
Also "Aside from compatibility, we do not believe that it should be
considered any safer than other laptops." is inside the notice on
qubes web https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/hardware/#qubes-certified-laptops
.

I'm okay to order delivery of parts and pay someone to build librem-15
from delivered parts or just do that myself.

Anyway where should I reed vendor instruction on "how to check the
delivered laptop for hardware implants"?

BTW: I love their claims: https://www.crowdsupply.com/about#user-rights

I don't think that my person is that important to merit goverment
backdoor from US or Russian Federation.
Though since that is just possible I should have exact rules how to
check hardware after delivery.

issues:

Under KDE, the application icons in the taskbar are messed up. Means
broken application images are displayed. Broken means some kind of
transition between the last visited desktop icons and the current one.
The problem disappear (probably refreshing to a valid icon) by the
time. But messing up again if I switch virtual desktops. Which I do
very often.

A refresh is surely occures if I switch out to a CLI terminal and
back. But the result is just temporary, as if I switching virtual
desktops the icons are getting messed up again and again.

Switched back to kernel 4.4 solved these problems, so it is less
likely a hardware bug.

The colours seem to be hard-coded here [1]. You will have to make your
own changes and then build from source as mentioned in the docs [2].

I tried changing the config.focused property in the i3 config file,
but the patch file seems to overwrite the user settings [3].

For your info, I have a usb stick which shows exactly the same details
as yours above, and I have installed Qubes OK using it.

I don't have a mac though, and I had to find the right usb port on my
laptop that I could boot from (some didn't work), and I had to use
the EFI boot option, not legacy boot.

So I think your usb stick is OK, but I can't help with the mac side.
(I don't have the prior emails so I don't know what your exact problem
is)

Mike.

[qubes-users] Configuring i3 window titlebar in Qubes

2017-06-15 Thread Jarle Thorsen
Having Qubes automatically give the titlebar of the windows the same coulour as
defined for the VM is a nice thing.

However I would like to make it more easy to visually identify which window is
in focus, the change of colour for focused windows is too subtle for me.I would
like to use bold text in the title for example, or make the change of colour
less subtle.

Is this something I can change myself, or is this hard-coded into the qubes
version of i3 window manager?

[qubes-users] Multi Video Cards with Multi Monitors Issue

2017-06-15 Thread 'Brian Lambert' via qubes-users
HP Z420  Xeon E5-2620

ATI FIREGL V3600 (2 x DVI)
ATI FIREGL V7300 (2 X DVI)

PHILIPS    1920x1080    16:9
Benq 24"    1920x1080    16:9
ASUS 25"    1920x1200    16:10

On first set up with all three monitors, both 16:9s would boot up with display
and the 16:10 would be disabled. Enabling the 16:10 display would skew booth
16:9 displays with horizontal lines about an inch apart.

The second set up with only the Benq and Asus and on separate cards, only the
16:9 would boot up with display and the 16:10 would be disabled. After enabling
the Asus display, initially had both displays working but mouse movements on
the
16:9 display was slowed. Playing with the settings again, the 16:9 display
signal
went dead. On reboot, both displays worked in mirror mode and was unable to
make any changes, except disable display.

Assuming, if all the monitors were the same resolution, they would all be
working. Is
this issue caused from mixing screen resolutions or screen ratios?

I am thinking of getting a new monitor with 2560 x 1440, am I safe in thinking
that
maintaining the same screen ratios won't cause an issue?
TIABrian.

Does the internal flag affect the VM in any other way than how it is
displayed in the GUI manager? Like, are they automatically started at
boot or similar?
