[qubes-users] Why is sys-net talking to shed.galexander.org ?
I installed debian-10-minimal template, installed minimal apps to use for sys-net, added iftop, then set sys-net to use minimal template. Almost immediately upon starting sys-net (and nothing else), open an xterm and run iftop, sys-net repeatedly talks to shed.galexander.org What's up with this? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. Sure, you can add the command to the template, and then the template updates okay, but after that, every time you create a new VM from the template, each VM has the problem again. The template needs to be fixed, and I'm sure they will. In the mean time, I will delete Debian-10, install Debian-9 template, clone to Debian-10, and do a manual update. I was reading about those testing repositories yesterday. Now that I'm used to doing reinstalls :) I might as well try it out. That's what backups are for. However, one of my backups failed to restore, errors. I'm hoping when they upgrade the qubes backup/restore software, they can improve reliability and fault recovery. It's a shame that one error prevents the rest of the restore. Now I'm going to start backing up each qube separately, making many small backups, and run verify every time. [qubes-users] Just did fresh install + all updates = everything working fine
Thanks to everyone who helped troubleshoot the latest dom0 kernel update issue. Everything seems to be working just fine. Fresh install uses kernel 4.14.74-1, and a full update takes it to 4.14.119-2. Both working fine. I hope the next kernel update doesn't break systems that have the old ATI Radeon video cards. I learned the lesson of don't make any changes to system templates like Debian-9, because you can't backup/restore them. I'm trying to keep the number of qubes down to just one screen full in Qubes Manager, which gets hard quickly. I'll either have to start creating a bunch of extra templates, or start writing down any changes I make. Yes, please pull 4.19.43-1 kernel update, if possible. Would solve my problem. I was curious if it was the kernel, or the xfce and lightdm, so I tried a fresh install, and when done, reboots fine. Then I didn't update anything, but I did switch over to kde/sddm with fingers crossed, hoping that was it. No such luck. I updated dom0 only, then after reboot, the same ole problem. Computer boots all the way up to the point of login, then when using kde, just appears to stop. PC not locked up, can still toggle numlock and capslock, but ctrl-alt-del doesn't work, have to press power button, then pc shuts down on it's own. [qubes-users] qubes backup and restore question
What is the point of backing up a qube, if you can't restore to it? I'm restoring a full backup, and instead of restoring to qubes, it's creating new ones with different names. WTF! What the hell am I supposed to do now? Delete the original qubes, and rename the restores? I'm guessing that will break a bunch of links, which I'll have to manually fix. Yes, that worked. I'm back to a fresh install. I didn't know we could do that. Damn, I was a little hasty formatting my drive. That's okay, I didn't lose much. [qubes-users] qubes updater broken? just had to re-install qubes
Don't know if anyone else had this problem yet today. Booted my computer this morning, Qubes 4 fully updated, been using for months, apply updates every day. Today, I noticed lots of updates. Dom0 had both kernel and Xen updates, so did all the other qubes. I let the normal Qubes Updater do it's thing, updating each cube. It completed fine, or so I thought. I noticed that several qubes didn't shutdown quite right, click on the right Q button, they were still there, but showed zero memory usage. I tried shutting them down manually, but nothing happened. Qubes Manager reported they were shut down. I decided to do a normal shutdown, which went fine. When it booted back up, enter disk password, seems to boot up normally, as soon as gets to screen for user login, screen flashes back and forth between text install mode and gui mode. Kept cycling, and hard disk light blinks each time. Let it run for a while, hoping it would change, but no luck. Did a ctrl-alt-del and it does proper shutdown/reboot, but comes back up with same problem. Reformatting it now. Good thing I did recent backup to USB stick. Maybe it was just my bad luck, lets hope so. Today, I re-learned the value of backups.
