Re: [qubes-users] Big problem?

2017-04-18 Thread Nick Geary
Qubes requires quite a bit of work and managing of Linux packages to get
running as you would like it. I suggest using a second computer initially that
you can use to get familiar with it.

I have the same issue with booting into BIOS with an SSD. It boots too fast and
I miss the prompt half the time.

When you get to the Boot prompt (likely f9) select boot from USB. You'll have
option as to where to boot from.

You need to have a bootable USB drive on the USB. You can find the directions
online.

If you have any other issues just shoot me an email directly. I'll walk you
through any issues. My email is in the list.

you can call microsoft to get windows back.

Why is it not possible to boot the usb stick again. What did you do the first
time that you can't do now? USB sticks just don't boot themselves by default
usually, but if it did the first time it should still now.

In your bios options look for the boot order section, you also might have to
enable booting from external disk option.

You now cant decrypt the disk.
So you have no alternative but to reinstall something - whether Qubes or
Windows, or something else, becuase that disk may as well be blank.
If you cant get the password right there is no way round this.

A computer specialist wont do anything different. He wont be able to
"recover" Windows, and he wont be able to break the encryption.
I'd save your money.

Since you were able to install from a USB this sugegsts you will be able
to reinstall "something" from a USB drive.

would be no other alternative to reinstall? Can I do it from the disk password

On one of my desktops, the boot screen is so fast that I don't see it.
I have to just keep hammering away at the Del key to beat grub. You may
be in that position.

>From what you've said, if you genuinely cant get the password right then
you have no alternative but to reinstall. You should think of what you
have as a blank disk.
Probably not what you want to hear.
I would definitely exhaust all the possibilities on the encryption
password before giving up though. (One possibility I have sometime seen
is that extra characters get inserted during the boot - if you press
LeftArrow you can get to text prompt, and you may see that some
characters have been filled at the prompt - backspace to delete these
and then try your qwerty version of your password.)

I assume that when you installed Qubes you were able to boot from USB,
which suggests that your GRUB is set up to boot from USB in priority to
HD. So I would try that. If that doesn't work then try booting with the
HD removed, and then hot plugging it back again.

Good luck

I've first tried to get into my BIOS when my pc starts up. Pressed del, f10 and
f11 at the beginning but I did not managed to get into my BIOS...

When my pc started up the first thing on my screen I see is the Grub boot menu
with:
-Qubes, with Xen hypervisor
-Advanced options for Qubes(with Xen hypervisor)
I can also enter 'e' to edit and press 'c' for a command line.

I hope you can help me further.

You haven't given any detail on how you installed Qubes, what options
you selected, or whether you had read the documentation.
Nor have you said if you've been able to translate your password into
input on qwerty key settings.

If you installed Qubes alongside the Windows, then you should be able to
boot to Qubes, edit the grub config and end up with a dual boot set-up.

If you simply replaced the Windows installation, then you will have to
reinstall it, if you insist on Windows.
If you took a backup, then you have no problem.
If your PC came with Windows preinstalled, then it is likely that there
is a rescue partition you can use to reinstall Windows - you can often
activate this by hitting a key combination during boot - check your
documentation.
If you deleted this or can no longer activate it, then you will have
to reinstall from some other media - you may be able to boot from DVD
or USB, but you will need a Windows install image: you may , or may not,
have one of these. If your PC was oem licensed, then almost certainly
not, so you will have to acquire one.

In general, you should be able to pre-empt the boot and get to your BIOS
by mashing keys as the computer boots. It varies, but often smashing DEL
repeatedly, or F11, as the PC starts up, may get you to some interrupt,
and with luck you should be able to select a boot medium.

I don't know what level of Linux knowledge you have, but you could try
booting from a liveUSB distro and inspecting the disk to see what
partitions you have there.

Give us more information on what you did, and what you know, and we may
be able to help.

As to the suggestion that Windows would be "safer" than Qubes, that's a
completely different discussion, best left to another time. Lets focus
on getting you working again.

I've done that before man, it can happen to anybody. Just reinstall qubes from
the usb stick again and do the password over,
this time one that will work for both keyboard if possible. Or one you can
remember how to type on both.

I also have a similar issue on raspberry pi where no matter what I do when I
reboot ro plug in my kb it goes to uk layout and some keys are diff so in the
passwords so I have to use one that works for both.

Yes,

When you have to input the decryption key, a lot, if not all of your
Operating system isn't loaded yet, so it didn't apply your custom
keyboard layout settings yet.
