Re: [Radiant] updating the wiki
Hi Tom Tom Cloyd wrote: More confusion here (it comes easily to me!). Then, you are an excellent candidate for helping in managing the documentation :) Accessing the link you give - wiki.radiantcms.org/FAQ - takes me to the website's Documentation page. Maybe I'm being too literal, but when I go to a wiki and it's called something else, then [a] I suspect I ended up on the wrong page (bad link? keyed in the URL wrong? evil spirits?), or [b] the page is mislabeled (but that's speculating). It might be helpful to get the labeling consistent with casual usage on the list - i.e. the "wiki" word. Exactly this link: http://wiki.radiantcms.org/FAQ works for me in both Firefox and IE 7. I think there was an error in what you typed, or you ended up going to the page http://wiki.radiantcms.org/ by chance. So, confused at this point, I went to - wiki.radiantcms.org/ - and instantly was redirected to http://wiki.radiantcms.org/Documentation. Hmmm. I guess this is the "wiki". Don't much like to guess, though. Yes, the starting page for the wiki is currently 'Documentation' and that is correct. No need to guess any more! Then there's this: For several reasons, I really expected to end up in Mohit's Summer Reboot project. But this appears to be an entirely different project - at least at this point - http://wiki.radiantcms.org/Summer_Reboot. At this stage, Summer Reboot is a different project that will eventually be merged into the handbook once it's ready. We could have brushed it under the carpet and kept it quiet till we had something to launch. But, we felt that it would be useful to people even as it was being developed - that's why it is kept as a separate project. I'm sorry if the Reboot has caused any problems. In all my posts, I refer to it since we're trying to beef up the documentation. But, that doesn't make other sources irrelevant. But wait - there's more (here come the steak knives). There's also the "Radiant Handbook" - http://wiki.radiantcms.org/Radiant_Handbook. And once there, there's an immediate reference to "the old wiki" - http://dev.radiantcms.org/radiant/wiki/RadiantHandbook The Radiant Handbook is the key documentation that existed before Summer Reboot. Due to performance issues (if I remember correctly), it was migrated from the old wiki engine to a new one. That's why there was an appeal for people to help out with migrating. Perhaps, we need to check if the old wiki has been completely migrated, and if it has, then we should remove that appeal. Thanks for pointing that out. Wow. Until I wrote this, I had no idea at all there were all these sources of information (some of which possibly are no longer useful...maybe...I guess...). This borders on overwhelming. Maybe I can cut a deal here: If someone will tell me a bit more about what these all are, I'll put an entry on the Documentation page so that each of these sources are clearly located and identified - unless someone else wants to do this. And yes I do realize that the Summer Reboot project is already documented on this page. I could easily merge this information into this proposed new list. The question that needs to be answered, I think is "what is the value of information source 'X'" Yes, indeed. That would help. Here's the list, as I see it: * "old wiki" - dev.radiantcms.org/radiant/wiki/RadiantHandbook * current wiki - wiki.radiantcms.org/ * Radiant Handbook (current) - wiki.radiantcms.org/Radiant_Handbook * Summer Reboot project - wiki.radiantcms.org/Summer_Reboot Ah, I also remember another point. In its earlier days, the Radiant Handbook was hosted under the subdomain of 'dev' - since it was related to development. Then, to make it more attractive to end users, the subdomain was changed simply to wiki so that documentation was under the title of 'documentation' rather than 'development'. It may not be perfect as a division yet, but it's better than it was. You can obviously see that http://wiki.radiantcms.org/ is a far better URL to refer people to compared with: http://dev.radiantcms.org/radiant/wiki/RadiantHandbook So, here's what the correct set is: * current wiki - wiki.radiantcms.org/ - home of all documentation. It includes links to specific articles (tags, extensions, etc.) and documentation projects (handbook, summer reboot) * Radiant Handbook (current) - wiki.radiantcms.org/Radiant_Handbook - a focused set of a few documents towards using Radiant. * Summer Reboot project - wiki.radiantcms.org/Summer_Reboot - a rapidly evolving new project to provide more documentation and to be eventually merged with the handbook. Hope this helps. Cheers Mohit. ___ Radiant mailing list Post: Radiant@radiantcms.org Search: http://radiantcms.org/mailing-list/search/ Site: http://lists.radiantcms.org/mailman/listinfo/radiant

Hi Jim I agree with you 100%! I'm trying to help coordinate the Summer Reboot effort and I realize that there are many items that are still missing. I would again urge people to use the Summer Reboot table of contents as a base to add ideas for which documentation is needed. I would also urge people (especially those asking for help, me included) to make notes on the wiki of things that you faced as a problem and managed to get help for. Of course, Radiant is open source and the wiki is community-driven, but I think we're a great community and we can take these issues in stride as we go ahead. Best wishes, Mohit. ___ Radiant mailing list Post: Radiant@radiantcms.org Search: http://radiantcms.org/mailing-list/search/ Site: http://lists.radiantcms.org/mailman/listinfo/radiant
