Re: [Fwd: Re: [Radiant] Summer reboot article]

2008-08-18 Thread Casper Fabricius

Thanks, Mohit.

I enjoy writing technical tutorials, and the V article is in fact
taken directly from a project I am currently working on - I learned
and documented as I worked my way through constructing the page. This
also made me aware that the shards/regions features of Radiant really
need proper documentation - this is my next project for extension
article III.

Btw, do we call this ability to add partials to the Radiant views for
"regions", "shards" or something third?

Hi Casper

Just got through reading both your contributions to the Extensions
section of the Summer Reboot. They are both very well written.

[IV] Frankly, I think I'm not yet at the right level of Ruby for
this article. It is quite technical (that's a good thing) and goes
through quite a few items quite well. I like the way that you make
references to current extensions. That's useful and helps people
answer the 'how did they do that?' question.

[V] I really like this one. I couldn't get around to trying out the
steps in the article on a real install yet, but I do hope to. It
does seem quite complete and is easy to read without getting
stressed. But, I think I would like to try this out so that I can
try to do up some screenshots.

That's all for now - thanks for the great work. I shall make some
grammatical editorial changes to both articles the next time I read
them.

Cheers,
Mohit.

Thanks, Mohit. Screenshots are a good idea. If more people
contributes documentation, we might be able to reach the goal of
completing Summer Reboot by the end of August! :)

Thanks for your articles, Casper! So far, I've read #5 (haven't
yet got to read #4) yet, but I will definitely do so.
#5 is really a beauty - I need to try it out to be sure it's
perfectly right. Will do that for #4 also.

I feel that we are now moving quite close to having good
documentation for creating extensions. I notice that you've
claimed #3 of the extensions also! You're quite the prolific
writer on that subject.

Both your articles are on my list for reading/ proofreading this
weekend. I do hope that I get the chance to do so. I will also
actually try out your articles this weekend if I can - if
possible, I shall try to create screenshots to add to them. In
some cases, screenshots are a distraction but I think it's useful
in most cases!

Thanks again!

Cheers,
Mohit.

Fingers crossed :)

There are more pieces going up every day and I'm spending about 1-2
hours a day right now to add whatever I can. As for screenshots, I'm
doing that right now, just so that there's something to see beyond the
text.

If there is interest, I could create a simple sqlite database with a
default settings, empty database, 1 admin user, 4 - 6 short articles
(I'll just steal from the summer reboot) and NO extensions in it. Then,
I can make this available as a download. That way, if someone's writing
something small and simple (e.g. how to use an extension), s/he could
just use this database with a sqlite backend specified for the database
(just drop this file into the db directory) and use it as the base.
That way, there's a clean database, it's DRY, it's not corrupted by
other extensions (though the public directory might be for the user) and
has just enough content to demonstrate a few features. Let me know - I
could do this in the next couple of days, if needed.

I'm hoping to put in a few more hours over the weekend - one more day to
go! By end of day tomorrow, I'll try to send out an update - it's more
exciting than last week since there's quite a bit more :)

Cheers,
Mohit.
