The radio turned itself off yesterday and now it will not boot up i have
tried the factory reset etc but still nothing, i dont have a batter for
it so it powers on mains alone, i have read various forums that mention
listening for a humming noise when it is plugged in, i cannot hear

Sounds like it could be a power supply problem.
You could try checking the power supply output to make sure.

I know you're going to say I'm fussy, but bringing up the Power
diagnostics with the Squeezebox plugged into the wall and with a
fully-charged battery shows the battery as Not Charging.
I suppose this is perfectly true, but Fully Charged would have been a
little less ambiguous.
The downgrade procedure to downgrade an upgraded Squeezebox Radio is
