I confess I've wished for canti bosses on my Homer, mainly though I just
want to run Paul Mini-Motos because they stop so much better than any
sidepull/centerpulls I've used with about the same clearance. I think for

I would not take my kid riding on US101 or CA1, full stop. Way too much RV
and tourist traffic for my tastes. I've done parts in OR and CA and I
couldn't wait to get on the back roads.
I'd do the ACA Transam route from Oregon to Yellowstone NP if it were me

I did the ride from Vancouver BC to LA in three trips, in the last century,
1982 (BC-Portland), 84 (Portland to SF) and 86 (Oakland to LA). We rode
through the redwoods out of Arcata, and camped in Ukiah. The following day,
threw the bikes on the Skunk Train, and regained the coastal route.
I rode today and had to use the 40tooth when I accidentally took the baby on
SingleTrack and up a hill! I don’t know if it would do 42. I am bad at
estimating these things and tend to just try and if it fails it fails.
On the other hand you could just use a slightly smaller front ring.

Same for rear fender, EXCEPT for the chainstay bridge bolt attachment.
Maybe zip tire the fender at that point and just take 20 seconds to cut

A number of years ago Bontrager (Trek) had a truly full coverage, quick
release fender. They only had it for about 3 years and discontinued it. I
worked for a Trek dealer at the time and it looked like a good product. It
seemed to work well. Don't know if the test of time determined they didn't
