your Altus rear derailer and an 8-speed cassette. But it would help a lot

I should have kept mine, I didn't know it was an heirloom! (I still have a
black one)

I have one Riv that already does all this, but I'm cheating the premise of
the thread cuz it's a custom I had built for the purpose. So I'll shift my
answer to: What if I didn't have a car and part of the ride to go shopping
included gnarly singletrack!
Ok the answer is Gus Boots-Willsen. I'd
Hi Scott,
These were actually introduced with Shimano's second run at RapidRise so
you have the right idea combining the two: the idea is Dual Control is you
could nudge the lever up or down on either side and get the same higher or
lower gears. My rather vague recollection is the paddle was
hit it on the head, Joe. Thanks for the thread. With all of your

in a turn it goes where you point it and holds the line until you change
it. It does this when getting bumped offline, too..the darn thing pops
right back to where it was going! I've ridden a bazillion bikes and nothing
rides like a Rivendell

not-all-that-mini it was. I'm not convinced a 20-inch-wheel Riv with long
stays and a long toptube is going to be notably more compact than one with
26 or 27.5. Now if he wanted to do it with separators to break it in half

I'm not stressed about supposedly off-topic bikes - I find most bikes to be
interesting in at least one way - but the 'no prices' thing really grinds
my gears. I don't want to guess at a number and compete with other
guessers, just tell me what you need to let it go.

The hiccup will be rear spacing for the hub, it's 135 OLD on those Rivs,
RBs used 126 or 130 hubs.

Jacob,
I like em, too, and wish I'd kept my Susie for these crazy-choppy roads I
ended up moving to less than a year after selling it. I really liked that
huge floaty tire thing, plus the fillet welds are very pretty. If I ever
find a Gus (or another Susie) in my size at a time when I can

The Platy is probably the more logical choice for what you describe but
either will be great and I think you want a Gus. Find one, buy it!
