I like 48cm Noodles a lot on the Hillborne, to me they suit the bike
perfectly. I like Albatross bars too but for me they need to be level with
the saddle and I like the levers forward so the braking position is as far
forward as possible. I'm curious to try Billie's with a really long stem,
Nicely done. Have you given that Albatross a good try? I just changed mine
on one bike to Choco but it is too cold here to give them a test ride.

Mike, that's the perfect backdrop for that Sam. All the colors just look
great. Well done.

That's a heck of a unique build and the best bar / chainstay wrapping I've
seen in a good while. This build will be hard to beat for the batch of
Sam's!

Mike, my goodness, you DESERVE this bike; you have done it right! Could it be
any prettier? No, it could not. This bike was worth the wait. All your details
just came together and it’s perfect, down to the minutiae.
Next up: you tell us all about the rides you’re doing with this glittery,
Best chainstay wrap ever. Really nice job. Congrats on your new bike.

Joe P - I expect you're right. I bought an XO-1 and a Sam last year and the
XO-1 didn't last long because despite being a great bike worthy of its
accolades, it's well overshadowed by the Hillborne. It's maybe a bit less
zippy, but the small concession there is paid back tenfold in ride quality.
It's a revelation! I too had one bike for nearly 30 years. Then I bought
a Riv. Then another.
Start saving your money because you'll start smiling like you never have
before!

Really excited that I was able to order a 54 cm Sam, the dark gold. My
stalking of the RBW website paid off! I have had only one bike for the last
30 years (an x-03). I love that bike, but I have a feeling this is going to
be a whole different thing.

Mike, that sparkle gold is real nice looking.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy!!! Mike isn’t getting any sleep tonight! You better post
regular updates...we’re cheering from here!

BTW - Kevin at Golden Pliers in PDX also ordered a blue 54 (hanging on the
wall) and a dark gold 57 (arriving any day) neither of which are spoken for

This is my first post here because I just picked up my new Sam from Riv
yesterday. Just the Frame/Fork, etc., because, unlike some others, I did
not do a good job of scheming and saving, etc. I've been wanting my first
Rivendell for quite some time, admiring them from afar (and close up up
Just ordered my Sam earlier today the minute they went live! 57 cm in Dark
Gold here I come! Can't wait!

True, the last couple batches o' bikes were from the Hillibike line, which
does have the longest wheelbases of all the Rivs, and one variation is a
step through. But i'm not convinced about the "more mainstream" and some
kind of relief from "insanely long chain stays."
Right now you can't
I think the reason people are so excited about the Hillborne’s is that they
resemble something of a more mainstream bike. I realize it’s not entirely
true, but it seems like for several months, the only bikes you could buy
from Riv had insanely long chain stays or were all step-thru mixtes.
Oh, these are my favorite stories. The long wait. Dreaming. Planning. Saving.
It’s so satisfying when that person gets their Rivendell. I love the rainbow
Atlantis; so much character.
I wonder if Riv knows that so many of you new buyers made your purchases after
Russ’ review? I’m going to
Jason, it’s funny how one Rivendell turns plural. My husband thought I was
crazy for wanting the expensive Betty Foy, but I swore I would take it to my
grave and never need another bike ever ever ever again! And, now there are 4
Rivendells in the garage (but only 2 are mine, and 3/4 of them are
Ray,
In a word, yes - I kind of went through the whole goldilocks process trying
to find what I wanted for day-to-day rides including commuting. The
Bombadil breaks one rule--that it's not so expensive that I worry about
it--but I'm trying to let go of that fear (and double lock it!). The
Jason, mind if I ask why you're getting rid of the Clem/XO-2 so soon? Has
the Bombadil essentially replaced both?

I'm also a new Riv owner as of late September after REALLY wanting one
since about 2006. Like others, I Riv'd up a less expensive bike to scratch
the itch and it was also the PLP videos about the Sam that pushed me over
the edge. I had been saving up money from my summer job VERY aggressively
The Sam Hillborne is a shorter chainstay not racer boy influenced. There
are some of us that like the shorted chain stays. I got nervous when I
heard that many 51cm bikes were promised I believe to BlueLug and hopped on
a NEW leftover from the 2019 release that I found. Glad I did even
Also, I know Russ and Laura from their PDX days and am a Patreon supporter
of Path Less Pedaled. Russ' review (and subsequent purchase) of the Sam
also heavily influenced my purchase. So I agree that Riv's relationship
with PLP is a win-win.

Golden Pliers doesn't have it yet but last weekend said "very soon" so I'm
assuming it's being prepped/shipped with the rest at
Funny, I bought my Hillborne a year ago today (happy birthday, Sam!), which
was my first Rivendell. I know, hard to believe since I have three now.
Anyways I actually made the jump after a couple years of idle consideration
largely because I thought the last batch was going to be the final
Tracy and Mike,
It is so exciting to see new Riv owners. I'm new-ish (3 years) and I
couldn't believe how great the ride was when I first hopped on. I expect
you'll have the same great experience. I'm looking forward to your ride
reports.
Mike,
Did Riv send yours to Golden Pliers before
Wow, Mike, you really planned for this one! It felt like these Sams snuck up on
the rest of us, but not YOU. You saw them coming on the horizon months ago!
I’m so happy you got the size and color you wanted and that you are getting
your very first Rivendell. Just you wait, what a snob it will
I will be taking delivery of a new "Dark Gold" 51cm Sam as soon as Golden
Pliers receives it and I'm stoked!
I've been corresponding with Will and Kevin at Golden Pliers since details
first started coming out, and put half down with Kevin so he could get his
shop order in as soon as possible -
The dark orange is a fantastic color. Hope it becomes a standard.

I got one! 54 cm dark gold. I hopped on it right away and it looks like
it's a good thing I did. From what I can tell, they sold out of 54's within
15 minutes or so. I saw a comment on the IG post that someone had one in
their cart and it was sold by the time they tried to check out.
