I've been seriously considering going to a downtube shifter on my bike. I
have the down tube boss, I would love to free up the handlebar space (BIG
thumb shifter) and I only shift when I can't accomplish my ride as a
single-speed.

Well, at
I love that set up on my Hunqapillar, Chris. When you need to replace your
main chain ring, consider a narrow-wide ring. I love my 38t narrow-wide so
far and I've had zero chain drops (though I've yet to use the 24t much.).

I'm definately sold on the idea of a dedicated single-speed chainring (I
think that is what a narrow-wide is) for my big ring. I've been using
the stock middle ring on my modern Deore crankset and my riding is tame
enough that I haven't had any chain drops. I'm moving away from that
crankset
I test rode an Albatross Sam on the bike path near Rivendell. Was pushing
it to see if it could replace my Bianchi road bike as my only go fast-ish
bike (It has). Near the end of the test ride I could tell someone was
following. I tried to wave him on since I was pulling over to return to
I think it's hilarious the way they respond to down tube shifters. I left then

Mine is a single TT, so that probably contributes to their confusion.

Last summer I was stopped at a light in front of Wrigley and a reveler/passerby
stopped and let me know that he knew what I'd done by taking an old bike and
making it a hybrid.
Now, I have a 2010 storm blue DTT non creamed head tube with a dirt drop and

FW,
Well... your alternative is to whip out the cell phone, snag the Riv site
and prove the newness.
Problem is: future FIL will do the math and come up with $4000.
That may or may not be what you want. :-)

Dear Marc,
Three weekends ago, on my first 300K ride with the club in a couple of
years, Wow, you updated a vintage bike. Who did the repaint? Where/when
was it built?
Well, the frame was built in Wisconsin for me in early April, and the
parts are mostly from the pile of stuff I collect in my

and that he used to have bikes like mine years ago. i must have told him
it was new 7 or 8 times and each time he just ignored me or reassured
It's rather sad that so many new (ie, who came to the sport only post
late-'80s) cyclists will never know the mixed blessings of dt shifters,
friction shifting, clips 'n' straps 'n' slotted cleats. Of course, there
was all sorts of cycling bullshite way back even before I started --

I haven't had my Sam a year yet and most of my friends ( club riders/ )
knew I got a new Sam . When they saw it in person most of the comments

A friend who works at LBS and familiar with Rivendel saw it and said Way
cool .
I get a lot of looks of course
I have a 4 year old single TT orange Sam H. People who admire it almost
always think it's a restored bicycle. I love my bike. Single best
investment I have ever made.

There's no doubt it's an attention getter, I think it's mostly due to the
double top tube.
