Mike, You can contact Riv or VP, either one will likely take care of you
pretty quickly. I have had one pedal display that during the honeymoon
period with mine. I talked a bit with VP and it apparently happens, but
infrequently, and when it did they made it right. I had a new set at my
I think you might be referring to the VP Vice - it has a longer spindle and
no flats - see Rob at Ocean Air's comments in previous post in this thread.

Dennis,
Was pretty sure they were the Thin Gripsters. Although could be wrong. I
noticed it because it was different from either of my two pair. They
weren't close into the pedal like the Vice.
Again, it could easily be faulty memory on my part.

I was totally, madly in love with these pedals until... the damned bearings
started clicking on both pedals 6 months into having them. Is there an
easy fix for this problem with sealed cartridge bearings, like dropping
Phil oil into them or something? I bet it was caused by the manufacturer
The mechanic at my LBS used a grease gun to pump grease through the pedal.
Both of my pair needed it.

The VP-vise looks like a good pedal, too, though I would discount the
Q-factor claim. On my VP-001 thin gripsters, I find my shoes regularly ride
against the cranks - not interfering, just lightly rubbing. Then again, my
feet are wide enough that I can have my instep against the crankarm, and
Rob over at Ocean Air makes a pretty convincing case to upgrade to the VP Vice.

- Lower Q
- Easier pins
- Less stress on the bearings
Interesting!

I have not tried the thin gripsters but I have a pair of the VP vice pedals
and they are my favorite pedals.

I do believe there is a version of the Thin Gripster without the flats for
a pedal wrench. Don't have them myself, but have seen them on a bike in
Jim Thill's shop.

I love mine. I put griptape on one side, instead of pins. I usually ride on
the tape side.

I think these are my favorite pedals ever. They are amazingly grippy with

They really do grab well. The MKS Sneakers and
Straps are nice. PITA to set up but great once they are on the bike.

I have thinned the herd down to a VERY Spartan 5 bikes (not including
tandems). Three with SPDs and two with platforms. Tool for every job! No
room for zealotry in my stable.

+1 on Thin Gripsters. I use them w/ the Hold Fast straps and really like
the combination. I can wear any shoe that I own and ride with foot
retention. Pretty cool. I have found it helpful to remove the pins on the
front half of the pedal to allow your foot to slide in and not get hung up

Am using them on the Sam Hillborne and Long Haul Trucker. Really enjoy
