I run Paul thumbies with 8 speed shimano barcons, and love them! I use
interrupter brake levers and it makes for a very comfy setup. The
shifters are protected from falls and easily accessed. Most of the
time I am riding on the tops of the bars anyway, and I don't have to

I'm hung up on the same quandary my self ! Just about to mount a set
of Jagwire barcon mounts to a Mercian:

Think I'll transplant the shifters from a set of 9sp Shiman DA rather
than use a set of DT 7sp shifters in friction mode. Better for
I've had both and my vote goes to the silvers.
They're like butta!

Hi all. I'm deciding which shifters to put on my new ride (silver bar

I have to dissent, my hands get numb on brevets regardless of shifter

What I have found that I do prefer is (gasp) anatomic bars. Since I

I have the Shimano bar ends on my Bleriot and an old Trek hybrid beater, and
the Silvers on my AHH. The Bleriot is a 10 spd. that I pretty much leave
indexed. I may be impatient, but it's difficult finessing the fine
difference among ten gears in friction mode. The old Trek is an 8 spd.
I notice this too. I have 9 speeds with Silvers and shifting is
difficult still after 4 months. I'm thinking of going back to 8...my
experience so far is that 8 works better.

I have both Silvers shifting Suntour XCD derailleurs over a 7 speed
FW, and 8 speed Shimanos. I pretty much leave the Shimanos in index
mode, and have no trouble with them. The option to use friction is
nice, but I never have to use it.
I'd hate to use friction shifters off road. I need all
I think the silver and shimano shifters are the same length - it's an
optical illusion.
I like Shimano because the little rubbery cover over the lever feels
good in-hand and is less pointy when I jam my leg into it when I hop
off the saddle carelessly. Also, the indexed option is handy. Silvers
I prefer Silvers. I think it's easier to find the gear with them.
