2014-12-07 Thread Keith Beato
Indeed! The 62cm Hunq's TT is long as it was designed around a bullmoose,
albatross, or any other bar other than the noodle which is why you often see
them with 130 technomic stems on Riv employees Hunqs. My picture shows my
original setup with bullmoose which I didn't care for due to wrist pain I
experienced when I rode anything over 20 miles. I used to ride the shop's demo
62cm Hunq (Taiwan made edition) with Grant while I was waiting for mine. It had
albatross bars as did Jay R.'s first Waterford edition (prototype for larger
tire clearance edition). I should mention mine is also the larger tire
clearance edition.

Actually, you don't have to have a Riv.

I posted this over to the Bob list, as I always post there, seldom post
here but lurk this list these days. Thought I would pass this on to all of
 you as well,

As some of you know, I have a website/youtube channel on how to take care
of the motor that pedals your bike.

I have a new book out, The Howtostretch Handbook, and it's free! Can't
beat the price, you can download the PDF here
 http://www.payloadz.com/d1/?id=2792724

If that does not work, try http://www.payloadz.com/d1/?id=2792724

Oh, it's not only for I bobs/RBW folks, tell anybody you want about it.
It is basically a guide on how to start stretching, about pain, how to
correct imbalances in your body, with
links to my videos to show the reader how.

 Enjoy!

Oh man, I test rode and wanted THAT bike. Even though it was a transitional
version of the Hunqapillar of which surely very few were built, it seared
itself into my brain as the perfection of that type of bike.
I believe it eventually sold to a customer and no doubt is making that
person very happy.

[RBW] Re: Free book for RBW Owners!

2014-12-07 Thread Mark R.
Good question, and the answer is No, absolutely not. Payloadz is the
service that I have uploaded my books to for distribution, you are sent a
link to download the book, that is all.

No worries, I have no newsletters, I send out nothing, I just have my
websites and youtube channel to teach my patients and friends.

hope that helps

 Enjoy!

I'm glad I had a tiny part in getting you to try those stem shifters. I

That's not to say that barcons or thumbies or DT shifters are any less
right.

Having another bike to ride while you work on this one.

I keep a couple rules in my head:
- The spoke nipple is the cap, the spoke is the jar.
- Cranks, pedals, bottom bracket cups always loosen towards the back of the
bike.

It is always okay to take the half-fixed (or now more broken) bike to the shop

Re: [RBW] Daring to wrench on my Riv's?

2014-12-07 Thread James Warren
Early Riv readers had some space for tales of bike maintenance screw-ups. Those
were fun to read. One story had a crank arm getting its threads stripped, but
it HAD to be removed from the frame so the mechanic eventually had to hacksaw
through the spindle of a nice BB to get the cranks off. Some parts were lost,
but the bike lived, and we got to laugh.

It is always okay to take the half-fixed (or now more broken) bike to the
shop and say, I got in over my head.

[RBW] Re: Daring to wrench on my Riv's?

2014-12-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
- Cranks, pedals, bottom bracket cups always loosen towards the back of
the bike.

I like this. Right hand pedal has a right hand thread, so if you attach a
pedal wrench to the right hand pedal and think of that wrench handle as a
crank arm, you BACKPEDAL to loosen. You also backpedal with your pedal
wrench on the left pedal to loosen it.

On the BB though, I'm having a hard time visualizing how you think of it as
loosening towards the back. The fixed cup has a left hand thread, so you
put a tool on the fixed cup and pedal forward to loosen, and pedal backward
to tighten. The left side cup has a right hand thread so you also pedal
forward with your wrench to loosen and backpedal with your wrench to
tighten.

Crank bolts both have a right hand thread, so you backpedal to loosen the
right side crank bolt and forward pedal to loosen the left crank bolt.

So, six threaded things, I only see three of the six as loosening towards
the back of the bike. Help me visualize it your way.

Bill

[RBW] FS: Burley Piccolo 5 speed w/ 2 Steel Moose Racks $175

2014-12-07 Thread Brian Campbell
Nice shape Burley Piccolo w/ 2 steel Moose Racks. One of the racks is new
and never installed. Both have full mounting hardware. The other had the
rear seat stay adjusters trimmed a bit. There is still lots of
adjustability. Price is $175 plus shipping in the lower 48 states. Local
pick-up is fine as well. I am in 19312.

[RBW] Alternate mounting for Nitto Mark's Rack?

2014-12-07 Thread BSWP
Has anyone ever mounted a Mark's Rack to the tops of the fork crown, on
fork crowns that have threaded holes right where the forks would come
poking through the crown if they weren't capped by the crown? It seems
possible with some careful bending of two rack stays, and would avoid
passing the diving board through the brake arm and cable area where
clearances might be tight. Maybe even a stronger way to fix the rear of the
rack to the fork crown, than using the diving board?

FS: Bags and Parts.

To buy these bags/parts, please use the links to my bigcartel storefront
(treetop.bigcartel.com). This uses Paypal for checkout. This is easiest for
me to organize orders and addresses and allows using a credit card through
PP with no fees to the buyer.
Shipping costs are not included in the listed prices below. I try to use
USPS Priority mail, ~$5. I'll combine shipping to actual cost if you want
multiple items, will send as a refund after you pay. Local pickup in
Chicago works too, just go through the checkout process and I'll refund the
shipping cost.
Thanks!

The reach on the Hunq is actually closer than my other bikes (Waterford

My other Riv'endells all have higher SO heights with longer reaches due to

top tube lengths is somewhat meaningless since the head tube angles are
different on all of the bikes mentioned. My Roadeo has a 73 degree Head tube

My Gunnar has the shortest wheelbase and steepest HT angle at 73.5 degrees.
It has a 60cm TT length but longer reach due to the saddle to bar position

[RBW] Re: Gabe's Atlantis has come to its new home

2014-12-07 Thread Michael Hechmer
Fabulous. I spent years searching for a used Atlantis to complement my Ram
before coming across a beautiful 650B Saluki. I really think the
Ram-Atlantis-Saluki era was a high point in American bicycles. I don't own
an Atlantis but if I were headed out on a long, unsupported solo tour it
would be my first choice. At 70 years old it is hard for me to imagine
buying another bike, but if I do, Atlantis is at the very top of my wish
list.

Enjoy the ride,
Michael

Having cut off a stuck crank from a bottom bracket spindle, I will say
there is no shame in that. :)

On Sun, Dec 7, 2014 at 12:26 PM, Bill Lindsay tapebu...@gmail.com wrote:

 - Cranks, pedals, bottom bracket cups always loosen towards the back of
 the bike.

I like this. Right hand pedal has a right hand thread, so if you attach a
pedal wrench to the right hand pedal and think of that wrench handle as a
crank arm, you BACKPEDAL to loosen. You also backpedal with your pedal
wrench on the left pedal to loosen it.

On the BB though, I'm having a hard time visualizing how you think of it
as loosening towards the back. The fixed cup has a left hand thread, so
you put a tool on the fixed cup and pedal forward to loosen, and pedal
backward to tighten. The left side cup has a right hand thread so you also
pedal forward with your wrench to loosen and backpedal with your wrench to
 tighten.

Crank bolts both have a right hand thread, so you backpedal to loosen the
right side crank bolt and forward pedal to loosen the left crank bolt.

So, six threaded things, I only see three of the six as loosening towards
the back of the bike. Help me visualize it your way.

 Bill

[RBW] Re: Alternate mounting for Nitto Mark's Rack?

2014-12-07 Thread ted
I used a similar approach to mount a Mark's rack on my Bombadil, but rather
than put an s bend in the short struts I just used a single kink in a short
straight strut that made them about horizontal. It worked fine, but with
cantilever brakes I found I preferred the mini rack.

Do any of RBW's frames that have those threads in the top of the fork crown
use center/side pull brakes?

passing the diving board through the brake arm and cable area where
clearances might be tight. Maybe even a stronger way to fix the rear of the
rack to the fork crown, than using the diving board?

[RBW] Re: Daring to wrench on my Riv's?

2014-12-07 Thread Matthew J
Especially with bikes such as Rivs that have fine paint jobs, always be
sure to have a lot of work rags nearby. Put the rag over the tubing near
where you are twisting, pulling, pushing or whatever it is you are doing
with a steel tool that is a sworn enemy of paint.

Dings from the ride are too likely to happen. Don't add to the problem
while maintaining your bike.
