Re: [RBW] Re: Handling effects of a front rack/basket/bag....

2015-02-06 Thread Matthew J
In my experience adding weight to the handlebars will never improve
handling, but then I've never ridden a low trail bike.

Low trail handles front weight well, but not necessarily on the handle
bars. Porteur style loads above the wheel yes. Handlebars not really.

[RBW] FS: 55cm Orange Cheviot

2015-02-06 Thread DS
Will post pictures later. Bought in September/October and have used for 1
~12 mile ride and several short ~1 mile rides to the park with a Yepp Mini
on the front. Thinking of going to a SH, or possibly just thinning the
herd, either way this bike does not get ridden enough to justify having.

Complete Upright w/ fenders and dyno hub - $2200 (new is $2900: $1300
frame and $1391 build kit, plus $55 fenders and extra $190 for dyno
wheelset, not counting fender installation or shipping/taxes!)
Frame, fork, headset, bottom bracket, seat post - $1000
Bay Area preferred but can ship for price of shipping

PM me if interested, I posted a WTT trade a week or so ago for a SH, that
offer still stands, frame or complete. 51 or 52cm

Build is the Build Kit - 650b Upright Bar Sam with the XD2 Wide/Low Crank
(170), Claris front der, cork grips, shimano dura ace bar end shifters, 9cm
stem, and Schwalbe Marathon tires. No Saddle or Pedals.

Extras to the build kit:
SKS/ESGE LongBoard Silver Fenders - P50,
Front wheel: WHEEL 650B Shimano 3N80 SYN-32H Dyno
Rear wheel: WHEEL 650B R36 LX Synergy 8/9).
No light, but can sell Luxos B in addition if interested. Alternatively can
sell w/o wheelset, or with alternate (build kit) wheelset w/ no Dyno
depending.

[RBW] Handling effects of a front rack/basket/bag....

2015-02-06 Thread David Banzer
The load that you describe (wallet, phone, keys, tools, tube, tire) would be a
light load IMO and would have little effect on the handling even in a bag
lashed to handlebars/stem.
Oddly, on my Redwood, the handling felt much better when carrying a load with a
Riv Brand-V handlebar bag than a front rack/rando bag with a similar sized load
(around 5 lbs.)
While geometry does play a factor, there is some rider sensitivity to handling
it seems.
If you can, try and make a makeshift tool roll out of a piece of fabric,
canvas, tarp, towel, c. Put in everything you intend to carry and lash it to
your handlebars with toestraps. Then lash it to saddle/seatpost and see what
you prefer.
Easy, cheap experiment.

2015-02-06 Thread Wildcat96
Okay, I think you folks have convinced me to stick with the silver and gold
combo. I might just cover the kickstand plate with a good coat of primer
and enjoy the Bomba as is. It's kind of nice to not have to fret over
chips and scratches, especially on a mountain bike. Sounds like the
bike enjoyed many worldly adventures with its previous owner! On a side
note, I weighed the Bomba on a digital scale at the bike shop and was
pleasantly surprised to see it weigh in at 26.1 pounds as built. I
expected it to be about 30 pounds. I think my Sam weighs about 25 pounds
sans accessories. Of course this will quickly change on the Bomba as I add
racks and bags.

I did get a call from Jerrod (sp?) saying I did not get the frame. They made a
mistake and they said sorry.

This is the fifth hiccup that I have experienced from RBW and I really ask
myself, how much slack to you have to throw RBW before you just give up?

Christopher congratulations on your new frame.

[RBW] Damaged Book and 2015 Calendar Sale

2015-02-06 Thread Jan Heine

At Compass Bicycles, we sometimes receive books from overseas that got
damaged in shipping. And some of our own books have flaws, from bumped
corners to minor manufacturing defects. Most bookstores would sell these
books all the same, but we'd rather send you a pristine copy, and sell the
damaged ones every couple of years at a reduced price. This is your
opportunity to get the following titles at a reduced price:

   - Bicycle Quarterly's 2015 Calendar
   - René Herse: The Bikes • The Builder • The Riders
   - The Golden Age of Handbuilt Bicycles
   - The Competition Bicycle
   - Alex Singer (the Japanese book)
   - Paris-Brest-Paris (the French book)

https://janheine.wordpress.com/2015/02/06/damaged-book-and-2015-calendar-sale/.

Supplies are limited. Fortunately, we don't have a lot of damaged books!

In case anyone here is interested in owning your Rivendell's grandfather. I'm
currently selling this on eBay. Very nice, but our new neighborhood isn't very
conducive to riding this type of bike.

[RBW] Re: Handling effects of a front rack/basket/bag....

2015-02-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
Obvious, but the more weight, the greater the effect on handling. On my
Hunqapillar, I use a small trucksack when bikepacking for my food. That
handles great.

With abandon,
Patrick

considering carrying a spare tire since I'm a 400 lb rider and a damaged

seat bag that will hold everything but the tire.

A secondary concern is that my Devil is a perfectly suitable bike in every
aspect except for the front-end handling. I've been riding 700c bikes with
MTB geometry since 1995 and I just can't get used to the Devil's 60mm of
traileven with 40mm tires. Would the extra weight on the front make it
handle more like a higher trail bike or would it just increase the wheel
 flop?

Hi Chris,
If you can rig it up, try the seat bag on the handlebar to test it out.

My experience is that some bikes do great with front weight, some don't. I
have a CC, Hunqapillar, and AHH. The CC doesn't handle well with front
weight. The Hunqapillar is great with Wald+HUB+HAR. I have an acorn hbar
bag on the AHH, but it's not loaded up.

Good luck!

And I am maybe not super sensitive, but can barely notice the with/without
differences during normal riding. I've never weighed it, but its
10x8x6 and generally full of powerbars, jacket, camera and tools. It
is extremely noticeable when riding slow however. This bike basically
serves as my beater/cyclocross/commuter.

Try it with front weight and you might end up liking it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Handling effects of a front rack/basket/bag....

2015-02-06 Thread Kieran J
I ride a Cross Check as my commuter beater bike with a porteur rack/big
Wald basket combo on the front, usually carrying a big shoulder bag with my
work schtuff.

I can definitely feel the difference in steering characteristics. Unloaded,
the steering is quick and precise. The bike handles sort of OK with a
moderate front load and fairly terribly with a heavy one. It is most
pronounced approaching a red light at low speed, as it will wander and dive
towards the curb.

However, I have pretty much gotten used to it and am putting up with it
until I replace it with something better, which is soon hopefully. I like
the front load config enough that I'm tolerating the bad handling.
Depending on your expectations, I think you'll adjust to anything (within
reason).

Re: [RBW] Re: Handling effects of a front rack/basket/bag....

2015-02-06 Thread Tim Gavin
In my experience adding weight to the handlebars will never improve
handling, but then I've never ridden a low trail bike.

Conversely, I've encountered better front handling when the load is carried
in low-riders, like on a Campee Classic rack, Tubus Tara, or Rivendell Hub
Area Racks. A load on the bottom of the fork makes the steering more
stable. Unfortunately, this kind of setup requires some sort of front
rack, and they can be tricky to fit up correctly.

Depending on the geometry of the bike, a lot to almost none. While we talk a
lot about trail in this context, trail is not the only determining factor of
how the bike will handle a front load. While it's generally accepted that a
low trail bike (say 30 mm) will accommodate a front load better, a bike with a
70 degree head tube will deal with the load differently than a bike with a 75
degree head, even if trail is the same.

I've got two years' worth of BQ that I'm unloading.

Vol. 8 #2 (Winter 2009) through Vol. 10 #1 (Autumn 2011), 8 issues

The first four are coffee-damaged, meaning a cup of coffee had spilled onto
the stack and stained one cover pretty badly, and some of the page edges of
all four. This was years ago and they were dried out and stored flat. So
no pages are stuck together.

cargo stuff and it's not obvious to me where and how it attaches.

To all, would a bag hanging from the handlebar feel any different than a
bag or basket sitting on a rack attached to the front fender?I will try
some experiments this weekend and see how I can simulate the load I plan to
carry and see how it feels. I've got a couple of cheap Trek rear racks
that came off used bikes I bought but I think I would prefer a front load.

[RBW] FS: USA built/designed 58cm Hunqapillar Frame (Green) F/F/HS

2015-02-06 Thread comveo
Hey all,

I'm looking to sell my 58cm Green MUSA Rivendell Hunqapillar frame/fork/FSA
headset, and thought I'd post here before it goes up on E-Bay.

Here's a bit of info:

The frame is about 5 months old and does have a few 1-2mm nicks in the
paint in about 3 places -mainly a top tube cable guide/seatstay rack boss
and typical paint marring on the braze-on faces and dropouts from rack
mounting wheel installation. Otherwise it was babied and has worn fenders
most of it's short life.

I likely won't be able to disassemble the bike to the bare frame for a few
days, but pictures could follow if you'd like.

I'm asking $1700 shipped/insured, which I'd calculate based on where you'd
like it sent via UPS. Feel free to send me your zip code and I can get you
a quote.

PayPal is always preferred, if you don't mind.

I'll be packing it exactly as does Rivendell, using their materials to
ensure weight savings and stability.

Pictures of the initial build are
here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/125432464@N02/

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to answer any questions.

Thanks all,

-Bryan

[RBW] Re: dyno rear light?

2015-02-06 Thread William deRosset
Need a permanent rear dyno light That works for a luxo front with usb
dealie.

Dear Manny,

For a rear wired light, the only really robust solution for hard use is
internal wiring runs in my experience. That requires either a frame set up
for it already, or modification of your existing frame.

Are you willing to get a braze-on added? If so, the Compass Cycles
repackaging of the B+M Seculite on a seat-tube braze-on is pretty
well-protected and durable once you get the seat-tube braze-on and a down
tube wire reinforcement added. The wire runs internally through the bb and
up the seattube. You'll have to cut your seatpost to length. You may need
to fidget with the grounding wire (run coax vs the light as delivered,
which grounds to the frame), as the Luxos U requires a dedicated ground
wire and ground isolation from the frame.

Modify your frame to run an internal wire down the downtube anyway if you
decide to run power to the back of the bike. The minimum is a second 5mm
drain hole and a reinforced hole at the down-tube/head-tube area.

If your frame is lugged, then you can just drill a hole in the
downtube/head tube lug. I'd make it just big enough to clear your (coax)
wire + a bit of heat-shrink tubing for reinforcement.

Carefully deburr the downtube hole--it is a high-stress area (hence the
reinforcement). If you're running a wire to a rack, then consider a run to
the non-drive chainstay, an exit through the rear-most vent hole, and
drilling your rear rack for the wire.

If you're using fenders, a B+M Secula with the coax wire glued/taped in the
gutter and a wire exit through the bottom bracket weep hole.

A Toplight if you've got a rear rack (a tubus fly is light). Drill the
rack for internal wiring so you don't snag the wires and run the wire
through the non-drive chainstay.

Otherwise? well, anything mounted to a cantilever boss is going to get
whacked with hard use. Even the back of the fender location tends to get
pushed around in ordinary use, though the lights are generally robust
enough that they're not going to die easily.

Other solutions are going to be less well-protected.

Or just run two seatstay-mounted battery lights. The Cateye tl-au100 (BS)
or (G) is reasonably robust, is actually weatherproof when installed
correctly, includes a rear reflector, and runs on AA batteries. Get the
seatstay-specific mounting brackets for your size seatstay from Peter White
or Bike 24 or wherever you find the light.

Buy a couple of spares for when you whack them--they're not expensive, and
probably cheaper than the paint work after you add braze-ons to your frame
for internal wiring.

Cheers,

Will

 2015年2月4日水曜日 2時31分58秒 UTC+9 Ant Ritchey:

 Hello Riv folk Hunq tribe.

Ant in Portland, here. Happy to say I'm the most excited owner of the
custom paint jobb'd 62cm 2012 Waterford Hunq (AKA The Silver Fox) that the
lovely Keith B posted FS a few months back. (The sideways picture in that
post did that paint job so little justice!!!) The bike went through a
standard baptism: brutal fenderless solo sunrise mud quest through Forest
Park, rack install and a near immediate swapping and switching of bars,
 stem tires.

The 50mm Schwalbe Duremes that came on the Hunq are wonderful tires
they are most appreciated additions via their new path in life on the
Atlantis. So no surprise here, right? I wanna go bigger on the
Hunqapillar. I threw on the biggest I had laying around, some 29 x 2.1
Kenda Small Block 8's. My caliper says 54mm at the widest knob diameter.
(I was able to safely squeeze these onto my Atlantis, for the record.)
There's some room to go bigger, of course and here's where you all can
steer me in the right direction... Gobs of clearance when it comes to
the fork and chainstays, but looking at the seat stays it seems like a
 60mm/2.35 would be pushing it.

I'm on the verge of buying the first set of For-The-Hunq tires and I'd
very much appreciate the Good Word of thee Group. I'm looking at some
Panaracer 2.2's but would love to max this baby out! Can i go bigger?
What's the word? Do you Bombadil riders get more clearance or no?

From the design perspective: Probably ain't so easy to make much more
clearance in the seat stay zone without doing something funky (ie bowed
Atlantis chainstays), but my function/design question is this: why mega
wide clearances at the fork chainstays if the seat stay clearance is the
ceiling at a mere (sarcasm) 59.5ishmm?

Also- if anyone recalls the initial FS posting and thread for this bike, (
 --- HERE
 https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/rbw-owners-bunch/waterford$20hunq/rbw-owners-bunch/vjPEda_VHYo/KREpRtBXre8J
) there was a mention by the now-previous owner of larger tire
 clearance edition
which roused some questions in the group to little avail. Were early
batches of Hunq's maxing out at a more narrow tire? It's no big deal but I
admit I am a little confused by this claim. Any and all info greatly
appreciated. OK. Enough. I'm gonna go ride now, I swear.

Good to ride to/from work and also tour on road or trail. No strict budget

How much effect does having a small front rack with either a basket or

My primary concern is carrying capacity. I want to be able to carry
the usual wallet, cell phone, car keys, spare tube, tire levers and maybe
some allen wrenches but I also want to move to higher performance tires and
am considering carrying a spare tire since I'm a 400 lb rider and a damaged
tire is probably more likely for me than others. I've got a great little
seat bag that will hold everything but the tire.

A secondary concern is that my Devil is a perfectly suitable bike in
every aspect except for the front-end handling. I've been riding 700c
bikes with MTB geometry since 1995 and I just can't get used to the Devil's
60mm of traileven with 40mm tires. Would the extra weight on the front
make it handle more like a higher trail bike or would it just increase the
 wheel flop?

I think the best thing to do for these frame/bike web specials is that you
really need to call to make sure, we all want to rely on amazon level of
accuracy for on-line orders, and for the most part rivbike.com does a good
job of representing in-stock items, but it looks like the frames/bikes
specials are an exception

[RBW] WTB various parts/accessories

2015-02-06 Thread drew beckmeyer
catching up from a previous post. im putting together a touring capable
bike for the gf. in no rush, but on a budget. she has a nice looking bike
already, so this will be a less used, but sturdier travel bike that can be
a little rough around the edges. used for s240 camping trips mostly.
looking for these things or variations of these things. perhaps you have
some stuff lying around that you dont need or stuff with a few scuffs here
and there. ill put what i am hoping to spend. if you have something in
that range or, better yet, stuff you just want gone, let me know

*700x32-40 ish tires*. something with solid puncture protection. marathon,
little big ben, panaracer tg (20-50$)

*Pedals-* mks touring or grip king or thin gripster like, old mtb pedals
etc (10-20$)
. something that will work without clips or straps

*seatpost-* 27.2. need not be nitto. silver (0-15$)

*saddle- *female specific. wide-ish. comfy. ideally leather, but that's
hard to do cheaply (60$)

*rear rack-* pannier capable, steel or a good quality aluminum. again,
nitto is probably too pricey.

and a couple other things i am keeping my eye out for, budget be damned
*Carradice camper or saddlesack med*
*phil wood or skf bottom bracket 68x113*

thanks,

carry and see how it feels. I've got a couple of cheap Trek rear racks

In my experience, the lower the better. In order of worst to best:
A bag mounted to the handlebar (like Scott's example) is the highest and
should increase front wheel flop.

A bag mounted on a rack above the wheel (like a small trunksack, or most
Randonneur-style boxy bags) will be high and will still affect handling,
but not as severely as the same load on the handlebars.

Panniers on the side of the wheel, but hanging from the top of the rack
(imagine side panniers on a Nitto Big Front rack, for example) should feel
more neutral.

A bag at the bottom of the fork actually stabilizes handling.

My opinion/experience, YMMV. But I don't think a bag mounted only to the
handlebars would improve the handling of your bike.
