[RBW] Sackville Medium large enough for 12 pack bottles and extras?

2016-01-31 Thread Patrick Moore
I am debating yet another large saddlebag, and I wonder if a Medium will
suffice. I owned one a couple of years ago and think the answer to my
question is "yes." but perhaps those of you who have mediums can confirm or
correct.

Does a Sackville Medium have enough volume for relatively easy entry of a
12 pack of 12 oz bottles + 2 or 3 clamshell takeout containers? My
converted Lands' End carryall/saddlebag conversion does, but it hangs very
awkwardly.

Same question about a Hoss, in the event a reader has one.

And: any other saddlebags large enough for this load?

Such a load is by volume (and weight) is a good test for my needs.

Saddlebag would be for the Dahon; would prefer not to clutter it up with a
rack.

Thanks.

Patrick Moore, who as usual sold the Medium he should have kept.

[RBW] Re: Clemmin' Around

2016-01-31 Thread Tim Wood
Sweet mixte! You have quite the harem of cool city/utility/fun bikes Mark!

Ya, I know what you mean with the front shifter, either I'm bumping it or maybe
it is rattling out of position as I'm always giving it a couple clicks to stop
chain rub. I was thinking it was a cable tension issue but I think you're on to
something with the vibration theory. The bottom line is that these shifters
weren't meant for this type of application, they are an internal gear hub
shifter which I'm not going to pretend I know a lot about but I know that they
work on very different shifting principles.

Do you guys think if we canvassed the group and band together that Riv would
help correct the issue and maybe offer a discount or credit toward some
different shifters? Probably a long shot. Based on the description they seem
to love these things and they aren't going away cuz they're on basically every
ready to ride.

[RBW] Re: Clemmin' Around

2016-01-31 Thread Tim Wood
Well, I bit the bullet and bought some ultegra 8 speed bar end shifters. Gonna
run the rear indexed I think.

And heads up, I got them for a great price from chain reaction cycles, $70
Canadian, which is like what, $10 US? Haha just kidding, but a good deal. Threw
some $30 all silver deore brake levers in the basket too and got free shipping
from the UK. I've ordered from CRC before and they are good.

I've never run bar ends so I am curious to see how I like them. I've had
brifters, down tube, thumbies, trigger and grip shift so it's time. I was a
little concerned with the shifters bumping my legs in turns but with the
shorter then bosco Albas and the longish stem I have lots of room. I was also
wondering if I could dismantle the sunraces and use the bar mount with the
ultegras, as a cheap Paul thumbie??

For grips I'm either going to slice a channel in the cheapo Clem grips or go
with the felt padding/ newbaum set up. Slicing the grips may be tricky as there
are thick finger grooves along the bottom. I decided to switch out the brake
levers too because they are all silver, will probably have better performance
over the tektros and I don't like how the fastening bolt on the tektros is
right on top, it's often digging in to my hand.

Both pieces of kit come with cables and housing too so I'm pretty happy with
the deal. Yay, new bike parts! I should be done spending now Oh but wheels
and tires.hmmm.

[RBW] Re: Clemmin' Around

2016-01-31 Thread Joe Bernard
I've run Ultegra bar-ends on Albas for many miles. You'll notice the bars
suddenly being longer on mounts/dismounts and sharp turns, but it becomes a
thing you unconsciously adjust for after a few rides. I've tried lots of
different types of shifters, but always gravitate back to bar-ends 'cause
they're so dang easy to reach and grab. Plus you get lots of room on the bar
for alternate hand positions. I even put them on my new Clem with Boscos, but
haven't ridden enough to know if this is going to work on such a
long-reach-back bar. I'll keep y'all posted!

[RBW] Re: Rivs in the UK

2016-01-31 Thread grrlyrida
Like Drew I live in LA and tried out Betty Foys while up North for a
wedding. I was so impressed with the staff and Grant that when I got back
home, I choose a custom mixte. I was sized over the phone and trusted that
Grant knew what he was doing and I was right. I take my mixte everywhere,
except if I need to park it on the street downtown. It handles the LA
potholed streets and the gravel on my most recent tour to Zion and Bryce. I
know you won't be disappointed.

[RBW] Riv bike packing documentary

It's brilliant. My Clem frame came with a Pletscher rack and various parts
taped to the triangle pieces. I actually stopped and admired Roman's packing
job for a few minutes before removing everything from the frame.

[RBW] Re: Hunq Effective TT

2016-01-31 Thread Garth
Lol. The geo chart is apparently not wholly correct, as I wrote about my
correspondance with Keven @Riv.

When the Hunq came out in 2010 I recall first buyers reporting their tt' s were
longer than listed. This is why I emailed Keven about it. Could Keven be
mistaken ? Yes, he may have been. The easist way to know is ask owners or
someone at Riv to roughly and carefully measure an actual fràme from the center
top headtube flat across virtually to the ceter set tube. It need not be super
precise, it will be obvious if it is closer to 62.5 or 64.5, for example.

[RBW] Run SILVER DT shifters without the tab washer ok?

2016-01-31 Thread Lungimsam
So I got this DT shifter clamp (
http://www.viacomponents.co.uk/via-down-tube.html) to put on my Sam so I
can use Silver DT shifters on it because I want to try DT shifting.

Anyway, it is a VIA brand clamp. Looks just like the Problem Solvers
version (http://problemsolversbike.com/products/downtube_shifter_mount1),
but it is all silver colored.

Here's the problem:

When I put on the DT shifter tab washer (
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/sh17.htm), the post of the clamp it goes
on is too tall, so it moves side to side freely on the post instead of
sitting flat up against the clamp. When I mount the DT shifter on the post,
I put the shifter with regular Silver washer on it like I'm supposed to (
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/sh16.htm), and it butts up against the
clamp post end before making contact with the tab washer.

When mounted, the shifters move great. But the tab washer ( (
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/sh17.htm)) slides side to side on the
clamp post.

I tried to use a bar end pod washer (
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/sh21space.htm) instead of the DT washer,
but that doesn't work with the DT shifter, despite what PS website pics
show.

So, it looks like the DT shifter will run fine installed without the tab
washer (http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/sh17.htm), , just mounted against
the boss end with the silver shifter washer up against it. Seems to move
fine that way, *but what happens if I run the shifter without the tab
washer that stops the lever rotation? *Do I just have to be careful not to
move it too far when I shift, or will the lever spin out?

Thanks for any info.

I might get the Norma clamp one on ebay since it has been reported here
that it works good with the silver dt shifters.

Anyone have a 31.8 dt shifter clamp they want to part with?

[RBW] Re: Clemmin' Around

2016-01-31 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch

Oops, Should have been more specific, Tim. I was referring to the Burley
Piccolo currently on my Le Tour, not my Burley trailer. For the Clementine,
the issue here, due to the long chainstays, is fabricating longer rack
extensions from the Moose rack to the upper seat stay braze-ons.

After posting last night, I took another ride on the Clementine. I first
tightened down the shifters using an allen key (where the old style often
has the half ring that you can adjust tension by hand.) I tightened them up
but still experienced the same issues, including ghost shifting. I did
notice that, particularly with the front shifter, it is placed in such a
way that I find it almost impossible not to contact it with my hand now and
then, and it is super sensitive, even after tightening, so that may be a
cause for the front constantly needing re-trimming. But the back still
ghost shifts unexplainably. I suspect the inner mech on these may not be
holding position well and slipping due to road vibrations, etc?
