[RBW] Bar bag for the Riv Bullmoose bar?

I agree on the bar tube. It fits nicely on my bullmoose, but I always carry too
much to fit in it...as such, I have a newish dark brown one if you're interested

[RBW] Sam got hitched: breaking in the Cheviot with a C overnight

2017-05-15 Thread John Stowe
I've had my Sam Hillborne almost 5 years ago now, and I've been hoping to
get my wife on a Riv since then. Our upcoming Erie Canal trip this summer
provided the perfect excuse. Partial build from Gravel & Grind in
Frederick, MD (co-owner Tracy generously offered us hers after a test ride,
as there's currently a shortage of orange frames) with other parts
scrounged from this list and the local coop (the second set of Dura Ace bar
ends I've found there!) to keep costs down. A few minor refinements to
make, but overall she's very happy with the pretty standard "Riv-ish"
build. I liked the Spank Oozy pedals on the test ride and got an extra pair
for my Sam.

I finished building in time for a Friday morning (three Fridays ago, I'm
slow sorting through pictures) "shake-down" commute, during which nothing
broke, so it was off to Hagerstown to drop the kid with grandma. After
Saturday morning's rain let up, we loaded up the bikes and went for a spin
on the C Canal. We discovered a folk festival at Fort Frederick, with
lots of canvas tents and colonial-era costumes, and ate dinner at a diner
in Hancock, MD. Since we were trying some new camping gear as well as the
new bike, we only went a couple of miles further to the next campsite,
which we had all to ourselves, to leave time to make some mistakes and
still get set up in daylight. Plus, 34 miles seemed like enough for a first
outing on the Cheviot. In the morning we ate breakfast at the same
restaurant, and did part of the return trip on the Western Maryland Rail
Trail. Again, pretty deserted - maybe we're just used to the high weekend
traffic in DC and Alexandria!

Perhaps the rain kept a few people away, but we were surprised at how empty
the trail was. There were stretches of an hour or more where we didn't
encounter anyone else. There were some mud puddles here and there, but
nothing too challenging despite our slick-ish tires. Definitely a
confidence booster for us both looking forward to the Erie Canal in July.

You can't go wrong with Riv's Bar Tube. I don't know if it qualifies as
mid-size, but I've jammed a ridiculous amount of stuff in both of mine. It's
also nice with the hook-and-loop straps 'cause it's easy to take with you for a
quick store run.

[RBW] WTB: XL/XXL trail bike

2017-05-15 Thread Reid Echols
I'm in the market (aren't we all?) these days, looking for a solid, probably
steel-framed, trail bike. Rigid is ok, vintage is ok; just looking for
something I can have some fun on offroad, maybe take camping, and hit the
Austin trails.

Basically, I'm looking for a Hunq, but I'm hoping to find something a little
lower cost. I'm open to frame-sets or full builds. Just built up my first Riv,
a 64cm Waterford Sam, and it's got me covered for any road that warrants the
name. This is for primarily trails.

So if you've got something lying around, or a lead on something like this, I'd
love to hear about it!

Thanks,
Reid

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-15 Thread Tim Butterfield
In addition to the camera search, especially by the mall, there is also
theft of public property, the traffic cones. I wonder if that would be
sufficient for a warrant to search. Or, just wait for garbage collection
day and check the can at the curb for disposal of them. Depending on
jurisdiction, once placed on the public curb for disposal, they are no
longer protected from search. If found, they might have fingerprints that
would identify the perpetrator.

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Bliss

2017-05-15 Thread Broccoli Cog
Thanks for all of the thoughtful feedback everyone. Tonight I raised the
bars on my current set up to see if that makes a difference. I came up a
full 2 cm's while still remaining below the min insertion line. I am going
to try to ride the bike this way for a while to see If that makes a
difference with my neck pain. If that doesn't work I think the Albastache
would be my first choice. I think it might be a good compromise between
drop bars and upright. I also think these bars would look awesome on my
Sam! I also think this would be an easier transition with my current
cockpit set up. I could keep the current stem and road brake levers that I
already have. If I switch to the Albatross I would want a new stem, new
MTB style brake levers and possibly extra long cables for my tall sized
bike. A little more money then I want to spend on this experiment that I am
currently obsessing about.

Thanks for the ideas. to addresses Jeremy's & other comments:

The LBS disassenmbled the left bar end and said it was all there. I'll
remember to check the orientation of the tab. I left others do the work.
I remember the tab when I initially installed the bar ends

The MT-60 FD is less than 2 mm from the top of the big ring with chain on
the middle. Any closer would invite rubbing. Before the XD2 I had Biopace
with a 50T and swapped to 48T without adjusting the MT60 height. No
problems

I'll have to check the amount of cable tension in the lowest gear.

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Bliss

2017-05-15 Thread Jeremy Tavan
I didn't specifically _swap_ from drop bars to Albastaches, but when I put
together my commute bike I decided I wanted to try Albastache bars and have
found a combination that seems to work really well for me. Albastache bars,
Dia Compe stoker hand supports out front, a thumb shifter, and reverse
brake levers. I love how wide the upright position is, I love still being
able to brake (with the little fingers) from my preferred cruise position
right at the start of the curves, and there's also the extra-stretched-out
position on the forward hand supports for mixing things up. The only thing
that's not really working well is the thumbie-mounted Silver friction
shifter (cut down lever with rubber grip). It's not holding tension
properly and has to be snugged tight at least once per ride, sometimes
more. But that's a subject for another thread. I did notice that with the
Albastache, it was really important to get the stem up higher than the
saddle to avoid feeling like I was going to go over the handlebars during
stops. Now that I've done that, I think this setup is a keeper.

/Jeremy

Re: [RBW] Hubbuh Gears

2017-05-15 Thread Ray Varella
Getting in sync with your stoker has a huge role in riding uphill.
This is particularly true if you try to stand for hills.

On my road oriented tandem, I have 30 tooth front and 30 tooth rear.
This has been an issue with less experienced stokers and has had ME standing
and going as hard as I can while they did less work.

Gearing aside, get really familiar with your stoker before attacking anything
too steep.

These HHH tandems are ideal for all the fun things a tandem is great for.
A 24 front with a 34 or 36 rear should cover most needs under most conditions.
Preparing your riding partner for what's in store is a real responsibility for
the captain.
The stoker is never at fault, IMHO

[RBW] FS- front and rear Surly HD racks $175

2017-05-15 Thread alan lavine
Howdy,
These are the biggens, intended for fully loaded touring. Front rated for
70 lbs and rear 80 lbs. Used on one tour and then retired. They have the
usual scratches on the corners but are perfect otherwise. All hardware
included, silver color.

Buyer pays shipping. Prefer not to break up the set as I need the space
and the money.
Thanks for your interest.

[RBW] FS: 700c Alex DM18 Wheelset - mismatched hubs. $80

2017-05-15 Thread David Banzer
Sorry for the re-post, didn't put 'wheelset' in subject line...

Clem got an updated dynamo wheelset, so selling previous wheels.
I built these up a while ago, can't remember exactly when, and they've been
on a few of my bike at different points.
They handled wider tires just fine and work well on my Clem with 29x2.35
tires, though worked best with 2.1" and under.

Alex DM18 Rims - previous version, these have single eyelets, look like a
wider Sun CR18
Rear Hub - Shimano Deore silver 7-speed era, 135mm, fits Hyperglide and
Uniglide cassettes, can be converted to an 8/9/10 speed cassette, no skewer
Front Hub - unbranded Formula high flange cartridge bearing hub, bolt-on
though axle is hollow - I've shortened another hub's axle and used it with
a qr skewer just fine
36 spokes per wheel - rear spokes are double-butted for sure, I think front
are as well, will confirm

While I've built well over 50 wheels in my lifetime, I'm for sure an
amateur wheelbuilder, with no aspirations of being an expert.
That being said, these wheels worked just fine, and I've never had issues
with wheels I've built for my own bikes.

$80 for both wheels. Local sale preferred, but can ship if you're not in a
rush as I'll need to track down a wheel box.
Paypal Personal for payment please.
Contact offlist if interested.
Thanks,
David

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Bliss

2017-05-15 Thread David Banzer
I'm in the process of swapping Nitto B132s on my BMC Monstercross for
Albastaches. The drops worked fine on the bike, but more muddier rides I
think I'll enjoy the wider, slightly more upright bar.
I've tried original mustaches before and they didn't work for me on longer
rides, but the Albastaches are looking like they might work just fine.

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-15 Thread Ryan Fleming
Good advice, Ian and that's what I usually try to doi.e. avoid heavy
traffic. One thing I will NOT do is give up riding. To be fair my run-in
happened at a time I usually don't leave work. I leave for work around 9 am
and start home around 6pm to avoid rush hour. On the day of my collision I
left work about 3:20pm so... a bit of construction going on and just the
time when kids were leaving school. Had I followed my normal routine, I
probably would have been fine.

I'm certainly glad you didn't break any bones and that you healed well; I
also realize that I was very fortunate too and I'm grateful. Could have
been worse. I just wish drivers would pay more attention...but to be fair
it's not always the drivers' fault in these situations as I think we all
know. However in a car-bike collision the cyclist is the loser

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-15 Thread Ian A
Good point Deacon, that when geography or time of day cannot be avoided. I
recall riding south from Mazatlan along the MX200 on a holiday weekend, with no
shoulder and heavy foliage right at the road's edge. Narrow road, heavy traffic
and frankly a reckless approach to driving safety put me in a very vulnerable
position and it was a lot of miles before I was out of danger of being clipped.
Interestingly though, along that stretch there was only one driver that was
deliberatly aggressive, everyone else was just carried along in that mad
traffic stream.

Looks great!I'm still riding my V2 as my daily commuter, but have done
some group rides with it too. Longest ride was a spirited 60 mile pavement

commute on my touring bike anymore.

Last I checked, this frame was still available to purchase and the original
prototype complete blue bike with v-brake(cantis?) was available too.

Re: [RBW] Sugino XD2 Triple with Ultegra 8Spd Bar End Shifter at Max Travel

2017-05-15 Thread Jeremy Till
John says that the front derailleur can move past the big ring--the issue
is with the shifter--so I would doubt that having too wide a chainline is
the cause.

The three things I would check: like Garth said, it could be an assembly
issue with the shifter. Specifically, there is a washer that goes between
the shifting mechanism and the pod that aligns the shifting mechanism and
can limit the shifter travel if it is installed in the wrong orientation. It
looks like this.

The square-shaped protrusion should point straight down. This topic has
been discussed a few times around here so if you do some searching you
might be able to find more information on it.

Secondly, you mention that you changed from bigger to smaller chainrings
over time. Did you move the front derailleur down the seat tube when you
did so, to re-adjust it's clearance to the big ring? The closer to the
chainrings the derailleur is, the more effective it will be. The shimano
spec is that the outer plate of the front derailleur cage should sit about
3mm above the tops of the teeth of the big ring when in the middle ring.

Finally, I would check the low limit adjustment. Is there excessive space
between the derailleur cage and the chain in the lowest gear (small
chainring, biggest cog) with no cable tension on the front derailleur?
Since the low-limit screw kind of sets the tension zero point for the
front derailleur, if it is too far out, then by tightening it you might
gain some shifter movement at the other end of the travel.

After checking the shifter assembly, derailleur position, and limit screws,
I would make sure that i take all of the slack out of the cable with the
shifter and derailleur it their initial positions to assure that no shifter
movement is wasted in taking up slack. Barrel adjusters are your friend
here, if you happen to have them on your downtube cable stops.

Given the ubiquity of Shimano bar end shifters, sugino xd2 cranks, and all
flavors of shimano front derailleur in our corner of the bike world, I
would be surprised if there were some kind of compatibility issue here.

2017-05-15 Thread Marc Irwin
I had a Hunqapillar with drop bar, rode it for a year and just had to have
a lighter faster version with the same geometry. The Bosco bars were being
delivered at the same time my HIllborne frame was coming so I had those
added. After a year of riding the HIllborne with Bosco bars and the Hunq
with drop bars, I switched the Hunq to Boscos also. Now I can hardly look
at my road bike drop bars.

What's particularly good about them that something like a set of
Lauterwasser bars wouldn't cover? If you don't need a pop-up position,
want the two hand angles you'd get with drops, and don't want the
longitudinal hand positions to be pulled way back, that /might/ be a good
way to go.(I've found that the Lauterwasser bars gave me about 80% of
it; not having a pop-up position for navigating traffic and not being able
to get them nearly as low as I like wrote them off, but they're still
kicking around my bike mess because hope springs eternal.)

[RBW] Hubbah head badge question

2017-05-15 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Fedex delivered the tandem on Saturday. The head badges came in the box, but
not attached to the bike. I just wondered if everyone got theirs that way. It's
not even remotely a big deal, just curious. To show the not-at-all-big-dealness
of this: Many months ago, maybe even a year or more, I noticed the head badge
on the AHH was loose. Of course, me being me, I did nothing. Since I always
have my Berthoud handlebar bag on the bike, I never really see the head tube.
So while doing maintenance and having the bag off, I noticed it was now gone. I
emailed Will at Riv back in April and asked if I could pick one up when I'm in
the bay area (Bay Area?) in June. He said that's too long to be without a head
badge and mailed me one, gratis. They are the best!!!

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Bliss

2017-05-15 Thread Deacon Patrick
I love my New Moustache. Moustache 2.0. Albastache. Call 'um whatcha want,
they are delightful to ride. Both my steeds sport them, and they are
equally at home on open road for a long day in the saddle and on technical
singletrack and a long day out of the saddle (standing on the pedals). They
have a wondrous subtlety of confident control on the technical single track
that is delicious. On non-technical terrain (trail, dirt, paved) they
simply flow, going invisible with the rest of the bike. Took me a while to
dial them in, preferring a higher, shorter stem (I'm pretty slow and
dim-witted and methotical about dialing in, so it takes me years rather
than days. But once I get there I'm there.).

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-15 Thread Deacon Patrick
Exactly, Ian. This works, except when it doesn't. Leah lives in a canyon, I
live in a narrow mountain pass. Geography limits options. I'm blessed to
have a MUP and good ol' CR21 that parallels the main artery, but it is
fairly cobbled together with bailing wire and duct tape. And, if I need to
get to town and back, my options require the use of the highway. Not bad
heading down, as I can coast at 40mph and have a wider shoulder the whole
way, but climbing back up has many tight canyon curves with no shoulder,
making being seen by traffic going 60 (that's supposed to go 45, 25 in the
curves, yeah, right!) difficult. The way round adds several hundred miles.

However, I think at this group's suggestion, I looked for alternative ways
to go through Woodland Park, and that has opened up much better biking
experiences, and far less risk of overloading my brain.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: rattles n' squeaks

2017-05-15 Thread Ron Mc
I found a long time ago with Sackville trunk bag zippers, they don't rattle
if you join them at the side of the bag rather than at the back/front.
Anywhere you're having a rattle can usually be solved with a piece of
rubber or leather applied tactically.
Riding my Lenton this weekend identified one fairly benign squeak that was
still too much for me.
(here's my '57 modified and Lou's '60 original - though he swapped for
wider bars)

My front fender was squeaking against the bottom of the front brake. So I
mixed a tiny bit of flexible epoxy (rod bond) only on the fender side, and
stuck a rubber washer in a nice blind spot between the brake and fender.
Brake works, fender is dampened from movement.

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Bliss

2017-05-15 Thread Broccoli Cog
Thanks for the feedback. I have Noodles on my Sam set slightly above saddle
height. I can't say enough about how great these bars are. Perfectly
comfortable drop bars in every way. So what's the problem right?? I am one
who always has dealt with some degree of neck pain from keeping my head up
in a position where I can see the road. Granted the quill stem has really
helped this situation but I am still finding that I am having pain on rides
at 2 hours long or longer. I am thinking about the Albastache because I
won't have to make other cockpit changes with a new stem and brake levers.
I fear I will be getting into a slippery slope but I would do anything to
ride longer distances relatively pain free. The next thing I will try is
raising the bars up even a little more to see if that changes anything. The
next step may be to try the Albastache bars but I am reluctant to give up
my Noodles which I love.

Folks—

I have a bunch of wheelsets and that I’d like put on the block.

I’d be willing to break up a wheelset if just a front or rear is needed.

Shipping for wheels would be via Bike Flights, between $20-40, depending
on how far from NYC.

All rear hubs are 135 spacing.

Mounted tires and cassettes are not included.

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-15 Thread Ian A
Ryan,

My own experience of being hit was being struck from behind at speed which
led to thirty facial stitches, but miraculously no broken bones. The face
healed well and only faint scars remain. This happened in 2010. I resumed
riding a few weeks after the crash as I had to recover from road rash and
heavy bruising, but I was tentative. I ride a lot of miles each year, but
the memory of the crash stays with me. It doesn't spook me or make me ride
less, it's just there in my subconscious. One thing I do now is avoid
"conflict zones" - areas where traffic might be distracted or stressed. A
couple of km detour is worth the effort to avoid the risky bits. The mojo
never goes away.
