[RBW] Appaloosa/Albastache Stem Question

2017-09-23 Thread Garth
Use this tool to compare stems

http://yojimg.net/bike/web_tools/stem.php

The dirt drop stem comes in 80 and 100 extention forward, but the 80 has 90mm
quill height above line, and the 100 has 155mm of quill maximun. I don't know
what a Chtystem is in dimensions, but you must, so compare the 2. You will
find either dd stem will have less reach, becsuse they are at a +35 angle and
not -17, assuming that is what your stem is. So the dd stem jacks up a lot more
than forward. The graphic tool is very helpful for visualizing.

As far as how high, that is all up to you, positioning rules are for fools !

[RBW] Appaloosa/Albastache Stem Question

2017-09-23 Thread Surlyprof
I love the albastache bar and found that either the dirt drop or the technomic
would get it up above the saddle by 1.5"-2" without difficulty (on a
canti-Hillborne). I went with an 8cm technomic only because I personally liked
the more classic road bike style.

[RBW] Appaloosa/Albastache Stem Question

2017-09-23 Thread Joe Bernard
If the frame fits you well then 7cm should be the right stem for drops or
Albastache. Yes, you want them a good bit higher than saddle because the curves
really get you out there over the front wheel. The distance is similar to
riding the hoods on a dropbar, but you have to create the height of hoods with
a tall stem.

[RBW] Re: Wanted: 650b Rear Wheel, or Advice on Which to Buy

2017-09-23 Thread Scott Calhoun
I checked my parts catacombs, and found a brand new 650b rear, 130mm
spacing, 28 hole Velocity Synergy O.C. rim with eyelets, (silver, made in
Aussieland), Tiagra hub, DT straight gauge spokes, perfectly true and
round. No skewer, $75 bucks plus actual shipping. It is not a hand built
wheel, but I did touch it up and it looks good and strong. For the record,
I have another set of 650b velocity 28 holes that I've put through the
ringer and they've held up like champs. I'm 175lbs mas o menos, mas during

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa/Albastache Stem Question

2017-09-23 Thread Jeremy Tavan
When I put my commuter bike together with an albastache bar, I found when I
used it as intended, with road brake levers mounted on the curves, that I
had to have the bars quite high relative to the seat or else I'd feel like
I was going to take a nose dive over the bars while braking. I ended up not
liking the normal hooded drop bar brake setup, and I am using reverse brake
levers with the bars mounted around saddle height. The curves are a little
above saddle height, the grips slightly below - a little tilt makes
everything feel better. To get the bars up this high I'm using a technomic
stem. As far as length is concerned, really it's just a matter of what's
comfortable for your torso and arm length. Because I spend most of my time
holding the grips at the ends of the bar and because I have a very long
torso and fairly long arms, I use a very long (120mm?) stem. The end result
is extremely comfortable, though not very rigid. Hit a bad bump and the
whole assembly wobbles until I can get it back under control, but part of
that is the flexible vintage steel frame as well.

[RBW] Appaloosa/Albastache Stem Question

2017-09-23 Thread Jay Connolly
I tried a moustache bar on my Joe and liked it. I replaced it because it was
only about 50cm wide, and I wanted more width. Everything else I liked about
the bar. I ran it so the hoods were about an inch above the saddle and the
bar-ends were about an inch below. The Albastache has more width and less drop
(and the most attractive curve, in my view), and if you run the highest point
of the bar an inch above, you’ll be about level any the shifters. If that
doesn’t work, go up another inch. If the Tallux or Technomic stems don’t give
you enough rise, a dirt stem might solve the issue.

[RBW] Appaloosa/Albastache Stem Question

2017-09-23 Thread John Casteen
I bought a used Joe Appaloosa that had been purchased complete and tricked
out really beautifully by its first owner-- many thoughtful choices about
gear and parts to customize and/or upgrade from the Rivendell build. Among
them is an Albastache bar, which is new to me; it's great. The bike fits
me perfectly except for the fact that the stem, a Nitto 7 cm Chrystem, has
too little height to raise the bars where I think they should be, which is
maybe an inch above the saddle. I end up with a bit more weight on my arms
and hands than I'd like; the stem, maxed out, sits about an inch below the
nose of the saddle. I think it's going to take a different stem to jack up
the bars, but before diving into that, two questions: first, does anyone
have advice about stem lengths that generally work for these bars, and
second, am I seeing this right? Do other Albastache riders generally run
the stem height just at or above seat height, where I'm sort of aiming to
put it?

Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can pass along--

[RBW] Wanted: 650b Rear Wheel, or Advice on Which to Buy

2017-09-23 Thread panog
You seem to have a very good grasp on what could possibly go wrong with the
eBay wheels which, as you said, are the "budget price" wheels. If you know how
to stress relief and equalize tensions you may be able to get them reliably
true.
The Zac 19 rims are based on the Rigida Sphinx extrusion. As a matter of fact
both Weizmann and Rigida are owned by the same company now so the Zac 19 is a
rebadged Sphinx. Hubs wise you got what you got and thats a very inexpensive
hub. Nothing to be done about it.
As far as fitting tires on these rims, it depends on the tire. Deep well rims
do have problems locking the tire beads. You may need to build the well up. See
how JH is doing it :

Those wheels are fine. The only problem with them is that the rim well is
pretty deep and you might to put a double layer of cloth tape into them to
keep part of the tire bead from submerging (one of my machines has a set of
handbuilt wheels with zac19s and tubeless tape, and Pari-Motos & G-Ones
need to be seated with soap or talc so the sidewalls can slide up and get
the beads into seating position.) If you NEVER EVER want to fuss with
tires they might not be the wheels for you, but if the fuss isn't a fuss
$118 shipped is almost line noise.

Yes, door #3 is the cheap path. The spokes are 36, and straight gauge (I
think?), and may not be tensioned properly. The Zac19 rims may be a pain to
