[RBW] Are you an "Oscar," or a "Felix" bike rider?

2017-10-01 Thread 'Beaverton Bob' via RBW Owners Bunch
I am definitely a Felix. Showed off my daily commuter (a Hillborne) at work,
and the cyclist who saw it couldn't believe how clean it was.

I now have 5 bikes that are always ready to ride, kept relatively clean and
reasonably maintained. However, I am also a fan of beusage and my bikes have
battle scars and honest wear. I do my bike maintenance at home, except for
frame work and headset installation.

SHORT STORY: I remember I once saw our village handyman/gardener in the
Philippines meticulously cleaning his bike. I told my Dad about it and he told
me that if I couldn't afford another bike, I would clean mine just as well.
Ouch!

I am the same with my cars (just maintaining, NOT washing), and I almost all
oil changes and tire rotations myself. Used to have a '74 Karmann Ghia that my
Dad and I used to work on too. Also wax and shine my leather shoes...

Ride Safely,
Beaverton Bob

Re: [RBW] Re: Huge Rosco Mixte

2017-10-01 Thread James Warren

Mountain bike versus country bike.

2.3” to 2.4” clearance on the Huge Size Rosco Mixte. Cheviot is more like
700x45-to-50 max. Cheviot has sidepulls.

This answer is not to be confused with the Rosco Medium. That one has the
Appaloosa fork crown, which means clearance is more like 700x55 max.

The Huge Rosco Mixte has the same fork crown as the current Hunqapillar. Big
mountain bike tire room.

[RBW] Re: Helmet that doesn't stand so tall? No teetering crockery helmet?

2017-10-01 Thread Kiley DeMond
As part of my whole unracing thing, I have been rocking one of these when I
wear a helmet. I bought the brown shell and the Paris cover New York when I
was riding my Dutch tank, but it totally clashes with my Cheviot so now I
only wear it ice skating (until I get another cover, anyhow). I am actually
more worried about my noggin when on skates than my bike.

http://www.yakkay.com

They are sold in the U.S. at a bike shops like
Heritage, https://www.heritagebicycles.com/products/yakkay-helmets.

They have some other very interesting alternatives.
https://www.heritagebicycles.com/collections/stylish-bicycle-helmets/products/thousand-bike-helmet?variant=22090492673
And this, that while sold out here, I find very interesting; goes well with
my bike and has a reasonable price point. Hmmm.

[RBW] Re: Are you an "Oscar," or a "Felix" bike rider?

2017-10-01 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Well I kind of already outed myself as an Oscar. It's not that I worry
about messing up a new bicycle, but I generally gravitate toward used
bicycles, often with more than a few battle scars. And it kind of goes from
there. Also not a super fussy maintenance person, but I do try to keep
things running fairly smooth. But sometimes I'll just do another build if
things get too non-functional...that sounds bad, but it all gets recycled
or sold or given away, so no real foul. I'm sort of happy with this, but I
would like to procrastinate less and be more organized. In fact, I think
I'll start tomorrow...

Re: [RBW] Re: 9 vs 10 speed bar end shifters

2017-10-01 Thread commutour
I use Suntour barcons on three different singles, one 8 speed and two 9 speed.
I've done 10 and have a new 10 sp cassette in waiting. If you get in the rythm
they are great. I'd have no reservations about going to 11. Switching between
bikes can make getting that rythm more difficult but I never found STI to be
all that great so I live with some missed shifts. Even if you miss a cog now
and then, the jump is probably about what you would have got with an old 5
speed system anyway so no big deal. I love being able to get whatever
casssette/chain combos are on sale and/or have the range I want without having
to worry about can I do this or can I do that. Put whatever on and it works.

Re: [RBW] New Bike Day--R05C0 8U883 Medium Mountain Mixte

2017-10-01 Thread Bill Lindsay

Rosco Bubbe is down in the books as bike #7 in my 200 miles on 10 bikes
challenge. The Medium Mountain Step Thru went out with a bang, on a
classic Riv-content ride. Out my front door, to the top of Mount Diablo
and back to my front door.

78 miles and 6700 feet of climbing on a practically perfect day in the Bay
Area. We're looking West from the summit and that bump on the horizon is
Mount Tam. The bike did spectacularly well. I've continued to dial in
this bike, now with a Black Brooks B17 and a Mountain Campee front rack
with detachable lowriders.

[RBW] WTT: Medium Saddlesack Olive for Medium Grey

2017-10-01 Thread dstein
I'm looking to get a medium saddlesack in grey, either to trade or to
purchase if someone has one to sell. Not the light grey grid on the website
now but the darker grey they had last year and earlier this yer.

Here's what I have to trade (or sell if I can't find a trade but find a
seller):

   - Large Grey Saddlesack (used on one overnight trip - maybe throw in
another $15-20 on top of the trade as it's a large for a medium?)
   - Medium Tan Saddlesack (not sure this was ever used)

Local in Bay Area preferred for selling and shipping stuff as I'm traveling
a lot in October, but open.

[RBW] FS: 52cm Clem H, $900

2017-10-01 Thread Jeremy Till
With the coming of the new batch of Clems at Riv, I'm reposting this at a
lower price, asking $900. Local pickup in Sacramento or the SF Bay Area
strongly preferred.

For sale is one 52cm Clem Smith Jr. complete bike with the H-type frame in
green. This was originally one of the pre-production demo bikes that
Rivendell had for test rides before the first production run. My wife
bought it as an off-road bike but it ended up being a bit too big for her.
My sister-in-law tried it for a while and came to the same conclusion, so
time to pass it on. Full set of pictures here:

https://flic.kr/s/aHskYwHU5D

Because it was a demo bike, it was built up at Rivendell and has a
different and nicer mix of parts than the stock bikes, including:
-FSA Duron sealed bearing headset
-Sugino XD cranks setup as a wide/low double.
-MKS Sneaker Pedals
-The nice cartridge bearing Silver hubs that come on the Appaloosa and Sam
now.
-Shimano CX50 cantilever brakes with the Dia-Compe SS-6 levers.
-Schwalbe Super Moto X tires--light, puffy, fast, dream ride type tires.
Think Super Moto casing with the Big Ben tread.

We've swapped in a pair of fillet brazed 58cm Bosco Bullmoose bars, from a
special batch that had the bar brazed onto the extensions at a slightly
different angle than the stock ones, so that the ends of the bars angle
down a bit more. To me, they feel like they put my wrists in a more
natural position. I'm not sure if Riv ever officially listed them but John
at Rivelo had a pair when I visited last summer and I bought them from him.

My wife also never really liked the "click but not indexed" thumb shifters
that came with it so we swapped in front and rear Shimano Deore index
trigger shifters, as well as a XT front derailleur. The shifting works
great now. There is some marking in the paint on the seatube where the
original Claris front derailleur was, since the XT one mounts lower. I
still have the original shifters if you would prefer those.

Aside from the front derailleur marking, being a test bike the finishing
isn't perfect; their is some cracking on the decals, the right hand one
isn't completely straight, and the headbadge isn't exactly centered.
However, it does have some nice paint touches that don't come on the
complete bikes: the "wings" on the top of the fork crown are painted white,
the "RBW"s on the headtube rings are filled in white, as well as the
windows on the seat lug.

The Mini Front rack and Sackville bag shown in the pictures are not
included, but I will throw in a pair of Specialized Ground Control Sport
650b x 2.1" knobby tires for off-roading.

[RBW] Re: OT: know anything about motorcycles?

2017-10-01 Thread Christopher Cote
I've owned all the 650 dual sports. The Suzuki DR650 is the smoothest
thumper by far. The KLR is the second worst to the KTM 640 LC4 which is
unbelievably bad. Like "something is going to break before I leave the
driveway" bad. I found the KLR650 really unpleasant on the road, between
the vibrations and terrible buffeting from the windscreen. I'd much rather
have smooth, clean air on an unfaired bike.

[RBW] Re: OT: know anything about motorcycles?

2017-10-01 Thread Jay Connolly
If 70 mph highway speeds are important, then you'll probably want something
like a KLR 650. I rode big ADV bikes for years. Once you get used to a twin,
triple, or four on the highway, a "thumper" isn't much fun, but if the highway
runs are relatively short and you want mechanical simplicity, a 650 single is
probably the way to go. The KLR engine is counterbalanced, which makes it
significantly smoother at speed than the Honda. Not sure about the Suzuki. The
advantage to these bikes is that they have remained mostly unchanged for many
years, so parts are easy to source and expertise is easily accessed on the
interwebs. You won't have any trouble finding a Suzuki, Honda, or Kawasaki in
your price range.

[RBW] Are you an "Oscar," or a "Felix" bike rider?

2017-10-01 Thread Jay Connolly
When I purchase a new bike or frame, I'm obsessively Felixian. I strive for
perfection in the build and often use helicopter tape on sections of tubing
most likely to get scratched. After a month or so, I remain mechanically
obsessive but aesthetically indifferent. I don't like scratches and dings, but
they are inevitable. Before I had Rivs, I did not use kickstands, which meant
my bikes were more often leaned against pillars and posts and fell over with
reasonable regularity. I now have a dedicated utility bike in my Appaloosa and
will have another when the 64cm Clem L arrives (different locations), so I am
really trying to silence my inner Felix.
