So is there really any diff between a hypothetical Waterford, Toyo, and Taiwan

If one was made by all three, could anyone tell a difference?

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-19 Thread DarinM
Thanks for posting Jonathan, now I remember being intrigued by that
"diversion attempt."

Looks awesome. Intersecting the DT means you don't have to paint a
weird/difficult line around a fillet on the cream head tube, but I wonder
if there is any other advantage to doing it this way.

It seems like fillet brazed frames coming out of Taiwan is kind of a new
thing in the past few months (Crust LB, Frank Jones Sr. BB), does that seem
accurate to others? Is it cheaper than lugs?

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-19 Thread dougP
Organizations have to evolve as their environment changes. Products have
to evolve as markets change. We can all imagine the discussions at
Rivendell over major changes to an iconic model. This had to be an
especially tough situation: reduce cost while retaining the spirit of the
bike; get sales up to a level to support production; update in terms of
current philosophy on geometry without sacrificing ride quality & utility.
Over the life of the Atlantis, they've likely learned some things that will
reflect in the new version. The design had already gotten longer
chainstays and 650B wheels in the mid sizes. This is probably an excellent
strategic move, and I hope it gets people excited to buy one.

Verrry inteesting

My low trail Ebisu 650b is the bees knees, though I'm interested in
something with even fatter tire compatibility (say 50 with generous fender
clearance vs. 38) and an upslope to the TT (which would be a first here!).

Of the current Riv offerings, a Sam would seem to be the closest, but the
59cm/650b Atlantis is even better... Given the price and the wait, This
forthcoming Neu-'Tlantis could be the bike with the magic combo. A sell-off
of current holdings may be in the making, as details develop!

Hi Jim,

Yes 135mm rear spacing for the original 27 1/4" wheelset that I replaced with
700c. The canti studs and original Diacompe canti brakes accommodated the swap.

Thankfully shipping was avoided, an out of town buyer had an in town relative,
so I dropped off the bike Sunday just a couple miles from my home.

Shipping cost and worse - the breaking down the bike and packaging would have
been a mess.

I'm hoping to get my HHH built up this coming Sunday, can't wait!

Anything to get the Atlantis back in the Riv standard list of offerings... As
good as so many of their frames, especially the new ones are I can't help but
believe they are all slight to not so slight chips off that original block.

If the modern Atlantis is a lugged Clem in a larger spread of sizes I think
it's a winner - and that is a compliment to both the Clem and the Atlantis imo.
Extra tire clearance never hurt anyone.

Still the best name, best headbadge and most instantly recognizable color
scheme...

I stand corrected if 50 cm isn't considered a small frame. I guess my main

appreciate a less stout frame and if those frames sold it would be good for

Still basically a sandbox, not the real world at large.   Life is
different out in the real world, where the maps are full of roads that

not have ten car lengths' real world experience.

Oh man, I want one! Weehoo - a lower priced Atlantis FINALLY!

Wait, I have a 58 Sam. I'd ride a 61 Atlantis with the current Waterford
geometry.

Why would I want the newly re-imagined Atlantis?

New Atlantis will have same top tube angle as my Sam, so there's that.

Additionally, my 58 Sam chain stay is 45.5cm. Current 61 Atlantis chain
stay is 48, and the re-imagined ones will be even longer?

So maybe it'll will be a beefier forked Sam with longer chainstays, painted
Atlantis green. And maybe more water bottle braze ons?

Is Atlantis tubing in general more stout?

Not sure if this domain can be generalized like that. There are so many

2018-03-19 Thread Daniel D.
Did you mean small as in sizing or less stout? If less stout, I agree. If
sizing, I disagree that riv says they don't sell. A person riding a 50 cm
roadini would be on a 52 Hillborne. That size range smallish medium seems to
sell out pretty quickly.

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-19 Thread iamkeith
Very interesting news. So many questions

Ironically, the 2016 geometry revisions - particularly the addition of the
59cm/650b - have had me seriously trying to figure out how to swing an
Atlantis purchase for the first time ever. I've continued to think of that
model as my aspirational zenith. Not obsolete at all. Simply not a good
physical fit until now and, at the waterford price, I just was not willing
to settle. I bet others feel the same.

The 2016 sizes already went from 2 degree top tubes to 3 degrees, so 6
degrees will be interesting. I assume that means a shift to the "expanded
sizing' and a lot fewer size increments again, which unfortunately has not
been kind to me. But I'm crossing my fingers, and can't wait to see what
they come up with.

Wonder if they'll change the decal to say "Atlantis 3."

Also interesting to think of the fillet brazed bottom bracket as a
"shortcut," and wonder what the rationale is for doing so IF I'm right
about there being fewer sizes and which would mean a need for fewer
distinct shell castings.I always thought of that as a high-end custom
detail.

Lastly, here's crossing my fingers that lugs at the head tube retain the
'points' instead of the rounded shape like on the more pedestrian models

Re: [RBW] Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-19 Thread James Warren
This is great news! I was just thinking yesterday that the Atlantis, with its large price tag Waterford construction, had moved to a state that had gotten away from its original mission - more affordable all-rounder. Now I realize that it's almost 19 years since the original creation of the model, and yes, things change: incrementally over the years, the factors that have pushed the Atlantis frame to $2700 all make sense. But despite all that, I'm glad that the company recognizes the importance of a more moderately priced awesome all-rounder, and that the Atlantis deserves that distinction (even though Hillborne and Appaloosa cover that duty well also.) And to me, I don't see this as sad that the Atlantis is changing. It already has changed, or at least circumstances surrounding it have changed - the current price of $2700 is a strong indication of those changes.- Jim W.-Original Message-

I am both happy that they are making cheaper bikes and also happy that i
have a waterford atlantis. I wonder a little about the purpose of keeping a
bike like the appaloosa in the lineup when the atlantis will be a similar
price and get longer stays (and presumably hunqapillar will also go the
same way). In general, i think the model lineup could be tightened up.

I'd like to see the hunqapillar go plus sized and full mountainy. keep the
atlantis as tour/all rounder. Sam OR hilsen as road/all rounder. Roadini as
road bike and clem as even more budget oriented bikes. Then they could play
with some weirder, Rosco-like experiments without trying to maintain orders
for 10 different models

[RBW] Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
The BLUG today announced an upcoming pre-sale for a less expensive
Atlantis. No doubt they will be made in Taiwan. The pricing hint is "a
tad more than an Appaloosa". Is it good that Rivendell is evolving? I say
yes. Is it a little sad that the Atlantis is changing? I say sure, a
little. I'd bet a dollar that some of their recent cashflow worries came
from the financials around this change. Made to order frames are expensive
but cost you nothing until somebody wants to buy one. Taiwan builds have
to be done in expensive pre-paid runs, which require a bunch of cash on
hand.

The curved double TT of the biggest size was on instagram I think.

[RBW] First pedestrian killed by autonomous car

2018-03-19 Thread masmojo
Like it or not the transportation landscape is due for a drastic overhaul over
the next 20 years. Bicycles will be part if that, but many people will cease to
own cars. People will use autonomus electric ride share cars and I think
electric scooters will take over!!! Bike lanes will basically be non-car lanes
& we will share them with all sorts of electric contraptions.

[RBW] Spring, winds, flowers, dirt, ride

2018-03-19 Thread Patrick Moore
Nothing special, except to me, but I just got back from a very nice 20 mile
out 'n' back on the Matthews; 17 miles of it dirt, and most of that rather
choppy because I followed the acequia roads from the southern to the
northern end of Corrales, just shy of the dam, and that is horse country.
Stopped after a few miles into Corrales and let out more air -- checked
when I got home and I had about 18 psi in the Big Ones, which weren't
horrible on pavement, but not as linear in the turn-in (if you will forgive
the confused metaphor) as with 28 psi -- again, pavement.

It is *very* nice to have completed last week's quota of resumes, and to
have a day on which to, well, just goof off (tho' finicky client in
Singapore said he'd send me data to incorporate by tomorrow ... but he's
late, so I rode without a qualm in my conscience).

Fatter tires need less pressure, all else equal, to "support" the sidewalls
(and, more supple tires, all else equal, require more pressure than an
equivalent with stiffer sidewalls); but, then, too, fatter tires don't
compress as much as narrower tires on the same rims at the same pressure,
all else equal.

At any rate, for mostly dirt, as this ride, ~18 or so seems good; for
mostly pavement, north of 26 psi; for my most common rides on this bike, at
least 1/3 pavement, about 23.

What do all ya'll think of this thing for:

1. Quick pressure replenishing after riding the tires squishy on dirt;
2. Popping tubeless beads into place?

There are all sorts of reservoirs available that you hand-pump to the
pressure and volume needed to seat tubeless tire beads, but AFAIK, this is
the sole device that is designed to be carried with you as a *gonfleur* in
the old-fashioned cycling meaning of the term.

Greetings, Rivendell friends,

I have a number of MUSA pants & knickers, which I have not been wearing for
a while.
All of which have been used, and are in varying degrees of wear, which is
why the price is so low! Hopefully the prices are fair, will happily
include a photo of
the individual pair or the whole, if interested.

$40 Black S Musa Knickers (in quite good shape) =
9/10
$35 Brown/Blue S Musa Pants (zippers on pant legs) = 8/10 - rear pocket
needs re-stiching
$20 Grey/ Blue S Musa Pants 5/10
$15 Grey / Blue S Musa Knickers 3/10 (
$15 Green S Musa Pants (kinda rough shape - a hole at the knee from
crashing, and chain stain on legs) 3/10

$90 takes them all. Prices include shipping.

Valdipino - my daughter and I were caught together in a monsoon one day and
each had them - they were perfect.
In lighter rain, I can certainly live without them, and will either wear
the lightest shell or go wet.
One thought about vented helmets - the run-off through your helmet and hair
can temporarily blind you, but a Halo sweat band has a runoff channel that
keeps your eyes seeing fine and not burning in the heaviest rain.
I carry the Halo sweatband on every bike.

I have VAUDE Valdipino Raincoat, Blue, Large, and I'm 6'4" and 225 lbs.
Mine has elastic loops in the front for wrists, but I typically hook them
over the brake hoods to keep the bar covered. I've also attached them to
the bars with velcro loops when riding choco bars/mountain levers.

And the rear modification is key to keep it from riding it up in the rear,
though a larger size mitigate the need for this (Modification: attached a
shock cord and carrabiner in the rear to attach to my seat rail).

Pretty! I approve the single speed drivetrain.

As for gearing: you'll quickly get used to climbing in slightly higher
gears, and this won't be a burden if you live in a flat area with only
occasional hills. Headwinds can be more wearing.

2018-03-19 Thread Rob Bolesta
Which Vaude do you guys have? I like my Vaude Valdipino

for light rains but mine barely covers the bars (bosco bars) but has no
elastic or anything to keep it there, so with the wind blowing around it
often flips or slides up. I've tried using clothes pins to clamp it to the
brake cables, but that's a pain in the butt and the poncho is then crooked
and doesn't shed the rain as well.

My Sackville basket bag does great unless the rain is very heavy, at which
times the rain shedding off the vaude dumps directly down onto it, and the
water eventually soaks through. In those cases flipping it over the basket
would seem good, but I hear Jason about the steering situations. Though I
tend to ride cautiously, and even more cautiously during rain...

Still on the fence about this thing but maybe I'll have to be the guinea
pig. Being able to ride every day no matter the weather is pretty important
to me so the investment seems worth it...

Bump. This is a great frame for a tall rider out there!

[RBW] Frank Jones Sr first ride.

2018-03-19 Thread lconley
Took my freshly completed Frank Jones Sr for its first ride on Saturday on
the Coast to Coat bike trail in Titusville. Immediately noticed a few
things. My feet are too wide for the lovely old Lyotard Berthet pedals, I
am not in good enough shape for the 45 - 18 gearing (OK on the flat,
struggled to make it over the bridge over the highway), and I am too wide
for the B-17, even with dropped bars. I also noticed that the blue paint is
pearlescent - very beautiful in the sun. I ordered a set of blue Catalyst
pedals, and I have two B-68 saddles "in stock", so I will be switching the
saddle out. I was hoping to use the antique brown B-17 special titanium
(off of my Guv'nor), but it was not to be. I may try another ride before I
switch out the chain ring (I have a 44 and a 42) once I get the pedals. I
really love the look of the bike, I give my 1st attempt at harlequin bar
tape a C - very time consuming and patience testing.

I must have the same Vaude poncho as Jon, and while I've only needed it a
couple of times caught in monsoon rain, it works great

[RBW] Re: Anyone try the new Fairweather Rain Poncho?

2018-03-19 Thread jandrews_nyc
That actually looks sort of terrifying. I can imagine having control
issues with a loaded basket getting pulled by the poncho material in
emergency steering situations in the city. Even with plenty of material,
it seems suspect.

Re: [RBW] FS - Riv'd Burley Tandem

2018-03-19 Thread Jim Bronson
Off Topic random Tandem questions:

Tony, it had 135 hubs in the back?

My 94' Burley Duet has 140, and I stuffed a 145 in there when I had a new
wheel built for modern Shimano drivetrain, could use the Shimano rear
tandem hub that way.

I would like an HHH also, but I would have to thin the herd quite a bit to
afford it.

What kind of shipping did you use? It was extremely expensive to ship the
Burley when I bought it a few years back. Over $200.

[RBW] Re: Anyone try the new Fairweather Rain Poncho?

2018-03-19 Thread Jon BALER
My vaude covers my handlebar, which is good enough for me. My basket bag
is waterproof, so don't really need that feature. I did mod my Vaude by
attaching a shock cord and carrabiner in the rear to attach to my seat
rail, which keeps it from riding up my back.

At 6'4", I doubt the size large would be big enough to cover me and my
basket, so easy decision for me to pass. ;)
