I'm totally sold on spiked platform pedals, running on 3 of 4 bikes, and agree with the arch concept of the Catalyst. Shanked shoes are not required with good platforms. I'll also state I've never tried a pair of Catalyst. The length was my favorite feature of Grip Kings/ MKS Lambda.

I used to wrap bars on beaters with slit innertube. Not particularly comfortable on its own, but it does "bulk out" the bar, provides at least a smidgen (that's metric measurement) of padding under the outer layer if you use a mtb tube, and you can choose thin or thick according to your need. On
