I enjoyed reading your exploits and efforts to ride you Betty. The joy of

A better ebike I have never observed.
As Patrick states, a better reason to evolve to ebiking i can not imagine.

FS: Bags

Berthoud 372 Panniers (Gray), $300

This is largest of the Berthoud panniers. It has a 49 liter capacity.
There is a large compartment and a smaller pocket on the outside. These
expand with the side-lacing so they store pretty flat when empty but expand
and can hold quite a bit--especially with the top loading. Note that these
panniers are designed to be used as lowrider fronts. Berthoud specifically
states that they are for front lowrider mounting. If you try to use them as
a rear, you may have heel clearance issues. Despite the warning from
Berthoud i use these on a RBW Hillborne + Nitto Big Back Rack with no heel
clearance issues (size 11 feet). The Nitto BBR has a really long top
platform so i’m able to push the bag pretty far back, YMMV on whether you
can do the same. If you’re comparing this to the current version of this
bag, pay attention to the pictures of the retaining system (i believe these
are the RK style), i think Berthoud has updated them recently. If you’re
comparing to the ones at Compass--don’t, they have Berthoud make their
version of this bag with leather straps instead of the camlocks for the
retaining system, though the rest of the bag looks to be the same.

As far as condition, there is some light wear on the leather trim and some
rubbing on the back of the bags. Some of the straps are starting to curl,
there are a couple spots where the piping is starting to wear slightly, the
only condition issue is that the previous owner wore through part of the
reflective material on one of the bag sides (perhaps from the
aforementioned heel clearance issue). My plan was to repair it with
reflective tape but it never bothered me enough to address it. I love the
look of these bags (they look great on my french postal inspired bike) but
i just don’t use them enough. Here’s a pic of them on my Hillborne,
https://flic.kr/p/c2paNj

Berthoud 604 Saddle Bag + Rack: $200

Used for a few seasons but switched to a front-loader. This includes the
special rack that bolts onto the seatpost. Even though i’m not using the
bag the rack is still mounted to my bike so this will take an extra day or
two to ship.

[RBW] Re: Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-24 Thread Deacon Patrick
A couple things to keep in mind on ss/fixed and trail riding:

— there is a surprisingly small amount of “steep” that is ridable geared but
requires LCG (lowest common gear, the gear every bike comes with) with a
reasonable trail gear of 50-60”.
— An attitude prevails that walking a bike is a failure, when in fact it is a
legit gear. For the few dozen yards per mile more I walk, I don’t go much
slower than most riders.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-24 Thread Drw
I think you'd be fine with 43's.

As far as getting your bike stolen, it's "easily" avoidable. Don't leave it
locked up too long or overnight. Keep it inside at home. Use a good U-lock,
always. have pitlocks or something on your wheels. I say this as an LA
native who has had 3 bikes, and two wheelsets stolen. In retrospect, all of
these events could have been avoided if i knew more, was more consistent
and less lazy. (my sins, in order, were - cable lock, left overnight, left
unlocked on enclosed porch, left locked at a movie but no wheel locks,
u-lock on frame but cable lock thru wheels.)

i wouldn't be afraid to bring a BMC here, if you're ready to be diligent
about keeping it safe.

Thanks everyone for all the advice! What can I say, this is a great corner of
the internet to frequent. No one even got into an argument about gear inches.

A lot of food for thought here; I’m wondering if the third path might just be
to put gears back on the BMC? Will I feel the need for tires wider than 43mm
gravelkings in whatever mix of LA National Forest/Pasadena commuting I find
myself in? I should add that this trip will be a dry run for some UK travel
later this summer (one of the few benefits of graduate school). I’m hoping to
hit the Sweet spot between versatility, fun, and “not going to be utterly and
entirely heartbroken if the bike is stolen” factor.

[RBW] Re: offRoadini

2018-04-24 Thread John G.
D and R is great! Columbia Rail Trail is even better! The Paulinskill and
Sussex Branch Trails are pretty good, too.

The NJDOT page shared earlier has a ton of great rides in Jersey. Shades of
Death is a favorite, as is Great Swamp and Round Valley Roundabout.

There’s even some decent gravel riding in Bedminster NJ, if you can stomach
being close to a certain golf course ;-)

[RBW] Re: offRoadini

2018-04-24 Thread lambbo
Thanks Grant, yeah NJ and PA have this amazing Delaware river canal trail
system from the olden days - apparently the path is called a tow-path
because the Burrow would tow the boats down from the side. I don't know if
that's true but I like it! Without having to look at a map I took this
one from New Hope, PA to Princeton, NJ. Much of New England has canal
paths I think.

Tom, it's a 61, I'm 6'1", the top of the seat is I think 33 1/2" from BB,
it's very comfy. however I will get a shorter stem some time.

Brett, yeah, I left brake cable exits early...I cut the housing too short
by accident and pretended that I wanted a perfectly round grip on the bar
to make myself feel better. It works but when I replace the stem I'll
re-wrap around that side.

I am looking for saddles for my Hubbbuhubbuh, & I'd like Slate Cambiums.
Please let me know what version you have. I think just two regular C17

out of the closet it was a funny shape (it was under some items), so i
mounted them to make sure they would stay on the rim, its been on for a few

Even though i’m not using the
bag the rack is still mounted to my bike so this will

Thanks, Mike. Will take a look that the reviews; initial glance has it
doing well per that rolling resistance site, though if it is indeed true
that the newest Conti GP in the 559 size really measures over 28 mm on a

At any rate, per this site and its testing methods, the Supreme is better
than the Kojak, so I've eliminated one tire from my list (at least until
other evidence surfaces).

Which of these tires would you choose if your criteria were first, low
rolling resistance, second durability, and third price, and if you wanted
to explore alternatives to the (wonderful) Elk Pass?

Conti GP 559 X 28 (one reviewer said these measured closer to 31 mm on his

Michelin Wild Run'R (1,000 points off for the stupid name), 26 X 1.3.

Kojak 26 X 1.35 (measures ~32 on 21 mm outside rim).

I know the Kojak.

My principal worries about the Conti and the Michelin are the actual

One option is a 17 X 21 Dingle cog (or White Industries DOS if you want a
freewheel). If you use the 17 for a 70" gear, the 21 would give you a ~57"

All this without the extravagant and appalling complexity of 2 chainrings.

2018-04-24 Thread T Cal
Thank you, Matt B, for the link to the geometry chart. This bike is a size
66. I confirmed via top tube measurement, etc.

For reference, my PBH is around 93. I ride with a saddle height of around
82 from the spindle center. (The saddle is set right around 82 in the
picture.)

[RBW] FS - Orange Quickbeam complete - 64 c-to-c

2018-04-24 Thread CharlieG
Noting Matt B’s view on whether this is a 64 or 66 in Riv’s sizing, would you
mind measuring the standover height?

At the risk of getting myself into trouble, how would you feel about
international shipping (to Australia)? Ruinously expensive, but needs must.

Cheers

Charlie

[RBW] Re: Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-24 Thread Ruben Flores
Most (off road) riding in the greater Pasadena area is steep and rocky
single track (10-20%) or long fire road climbs. (5-10%) throw in a
little sun or heat and you will want gears. No one is going to bother
(steal) your bike at the Huntington but if you use the bike to roll around
the local area Pasadena, Monrovia, etc you will want something not worth
stealing.

If you stay on the street you will still see lots of SS and fixies it the
Pasadena / San Gabriel Valley. If you head north from there, not the best
but pretty good road riding. When will you be here, TOC will be passing
thru Ventura County on May 14-15.

[RBW] Re: Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-24 Thread T Cal
I like Philip's suggestion ;-)

To your question. As an angeleno, I'll second many of the
comments/suggestions made. There is plenty you can do on a SS to fill up
all your time/energy/enthusiasm. AND there is plenty in addition for which
gears would be most welcome. If you are looking to get into the hills,
even just on the fire roads, things can get a steep for a sustained
distance. I used to live in Austin. The biggest difference to me is the
longer, more sustained, climbs -- leaving from the beach in Santa Monica or
Malibu and heading into the Santa Monica mountains gives a pretty steady
2000' elevation climb.
