The guard sold with the Silver Wide/Low crank should support up to a 40T chainring. Even with a 40T big ring, the jump to/from a 24T small ring is still 16T, which is usually the recommended max spread (e.g., 50/34). As for whether a 38T big ring is enough, you need to figure that for yourself.

Bob, the use of asymmetrical beams is like using your hi-beams on your car. The hi-beams basically light up the tree tops, so you would have to lower your beam into the ground so the top of the symmetrical beam does not shine into people's eyes. Asymmetrical beams have a very sharp cutoff.
