I often see some bits of aluminum underneath the front derailleur clamp
to presumably act as a soft shim to keep the seat tube from being
crimped due to over tightening of the clamp?.
I crimped a seat tube before in the past and want to avoid that on my new
Appaloosa build.

The shims are usually used to put a 31.8 derailleur on a 28.6 seat tube.

On my old mountain bike, I had 29+ set up with Stans Flow rims (23mm
internal) and 29x3" tires. No issues down to about 17psi riding
aggressively on the trail. I don't think there would be any issue unless
you were well down in the low-teens.

As Laing says, those are shims used to adapt front derailleurs with larger
clamps to narrower seat tubes. If your derailleur is properly matched to the
tube I wouldn't recommend using anything under it, just be judicious when
tightening the clamp bolt.

IMHO and this is coming from the way I know I ride... the Cliffhangers are
not a good rim for a tire in the 2.8 inch range. I have Cliffhangers on my
Appaloosa running 57mm G Ones and I just don't see how a 2.8 would ride
well off road (it would be terribly balloon like), especially if you are
Trying to pm you on mobile. Sorry if it fails. Happy to buy the wheel if the
sale falls through.

Those new bike adjustment periods can be equal parts exciting and frustrating.
I've had my Homer a little over a month now and was making a minor adjustment
on the way home from work yesterday. Great riding bike though. Hope the bars
