Oh, a big difference cuz I think my 54.2 frame correlates to the 55
Rosco/Platys is they use 700c, I have 650b. That's the thing I'd change if
I was designing my bike now, I think those big hoops on the Platy look
amazing and I kinda wish I had them. Although it would make it even longer
and my bike is already HUGE!

I adore riding a bike in Savannah. But, I would not leave it anywhere without a
really good lock. I do not recall there being many places to lock up your bike.
It is high traffic but the speeds are low downtown due to the squares - very
fun to navigate with so many beautiful residential streets. I found the drivers
largely not unfriendly. Good shoulders. I recall a PBS cycling series that
featured Savannah in an episode. It was a good watch.
I would cycle there any day I could.

[RBW] Silver 2 kudos

2022-09-18 Thread Richard Rose
Caveat, I am not a very good bike mechanic & I grew up using friction
shifting. My Clem came to me with the Microshift thumb shifters. The front
shifter of course is friction only. The rear came set up to index (9 speed)
and it has been fine. Better than fine really, but just a little bit klunky
looking (imho) compared to the beautiful Silver 2 units. Honestly I ordered
the Silver's last week 90% base on looks, 10% on the romance of the
mechanical bicycle.
The shifters arrived yesterday and I wanted to see if I could do the
install. First I tackled reversing the Shimano brake levers so the clamping
bolts would not interfere with the shifters in the "inside" thumbie
position that Riv seems to prefer. No biggie, just release the cable on
each lever and swap'em. With that out of the way I mounted the rear
shifter. Only thing left was to string the cable. Its a pretty new bike so
I wanted to use the existing cables. I removed the crimped end and
extracted the cable without incident or fraying. I then threaded said cable
through the new shifter and through the housing, It stuck at the last
ferrule. It just would not go and I figured forcing it would be a bad idea.
So instead I reversed that rearmost 12" piece of housing and the cable went
right through. I fiddle with the cable tension a bit and all seemed well.
Spun the pedals and tried shifting up the cassette - no go. Checked the d
ring and it was loose. Snugged it up a bit and damned if it did not shift.
Ran it up the cassette and seemed good enough to test ride.
I cannot believe its actually working. But what I really cannot comprehend
is how excellent the shifting is. I think further adjustments are needed
but it goes up and down without incident in the smoothest, most joyfully
tactile way imaginable. Great success! Now I need those gorgeous Love
Levers to complete the look.:)

Good stuff Collin. I agree, packrafting is great! I haven't had the
opportunity to do in some years and my setup was never as svelte as yours
appears to be, but I didn't mind that. It was easier living out west where
there were far less damns to contend with or maybe better said that
distance between damns was greater than it is in the south east.

[RBW] Atypical Ride on a Riv

2022-09-18 Thread Collin A
Sort-of Ride Report

Most of my rides during the pandemic were the same couple of loops around
the American river in Sacramento, which does have some great trails and
some not-so-legal singletrack, but gets old if that's all you are doing. I
wasn't often able to (or unwilling) to make the 90 min drive to the Bay
Area to get a greater variety of riding in - think Mt Tam area, Mt Diablo,
Golden Gate Rec area, etc but I did head up to Auburn and truckee when I
got the chance and it was on fire or snowed in.

Fast forward a year and I recently picked up a neat little tool to help
increase the variety of riding that I can do in a city with a river that
runs through it - a packraft! Its a pretty cool thing to be able to bike up
to 30 miles and paddle almost back home, or bike 35 miles and paddle into a
boat-in campsite (sadly, the mosquito Fire in Foresthill area has closed
most of those off for the forseeable future). I've gotten the setup pretty
well dialed, so I can load up an S24Os worth of gear plus a raft, paddle,
and PFD (I mostly go solo) without the Riv weighing like an absolute tank
(its still close to 70 lbs though!).

The typical route I try to do on the weekends now is to ride from my
apartment in Midtown and up to Nimbus dam (or just a little downstream),
blow up the raft, strap the bike to it, then paddle about 7-15 miles
depending on how I feel and how strong the wind is (wind is much worse on a
raft than on a bike). Its a great way to spend the afternoon, and the river
almost always changes from day-to-day thanks to drought related water
releases and power-requirements (the river is dammed pretty much the whole
way, but the last stretch is the USACE Folsom dam and Nimbus diversion).

Anywho, just wanted to share what is fast becoming a more typical ride for
me, but definitely a fun and different experience to my typical local ride.
With the colder weather setting in, I'll also have to wear something more
than swimtrunks and sandals though :(

Some sunny day photos:

Cheers,
Collin in Stormramento

Re: [RBW] R14 or M1 as a saddlebag support?

2022-09-18 Thread Arthur Walther
Thanks for all the amazing replies and pictures, folks!

It's been really helpful to see the pics of different configurations here.
Keith makes a good point about the front struts of the R14 not designed to
swivel vertically. I haven't noticed it earlier, and it's a shame that all
the RBW51 ones are now sold out. It seems to be a superior option in terms
of adjustability, albeit with a smaller tombstone.
Also agree with Chris - different racks front and rear seem a bit more
eye-catching, to me at least, and my intended bag is on a larger side
anyway (same setup as in Nick's message at the top of the page)
Keeping all that in mind, I'd probably try to get my hands on Mark's rack
for the front and R14 for the rear of the bike, and see if the frame
builder has any suggestions in terms of the optimal braze-on position.
In any case, I'd always be able to mount Mark's rack for the saddle bag
support, if I don't manage to set up the R14 properly.

This feels much more like an informed decision, thank you all for the kind
contributions!
Arthur

Thanks for all the amazing replies and pictures, folks!
It's very helpful to see the pics of different configurations here.
Keith makes a good point about the front struts of the R14 not designed to
swivel vertically. I haven't noticed it earlier, and it's a shame that all
the RBW51 ones are now sold out. It seems to be a superior option in terms
of adjustability, albeit with a smaller tombstone.
Also agree with Chris - different racks front and rear seem a bit more
interesting to my eye, and my intended bag is on a larger side (same setup
as in Nick's message at the top of the page)
Keeping all that in mind, I'll probably try to get my hands on Mark's rack
for the front and R14 for the rear of the bike, and see if the frame
builder has any suggestions in terms of the optimal braze-on position.
In any case, I'd always be able to mount Mark's rack for the saddle bag
support, if I don't manage to set up the R14 properly.

This feels much more like an informed decision, thank you all for the kind
contributions!
Arthur

Joe,
Your custom is my favorite Rivendell. It checks all the boxes I would want
in a bike and I'm glad you're able to put some miles on it now. Ride on!

Swapped the DirtDrop stem for an 11cm FacePlater, was able to move the
Billies a smidge forward, moved the Brooks a bit forward too (not as
 much),
I feel more "in the middle" of the bike now. I should have taken the bar
bag off so you can see the stem.

Swapped the RBW51 rack for a Nitto Big Rack, it looks kinda way back
there for a bag support but I'm going to get at least one shopper pannier
 for... shopping.

Love this bike, don't know how someone could show up on the Riv
Instagram and tell me I ride a "girl's bike" but that's what happened
yesterday. Hey bro, check out my girl's bike! ‍♂️
