[RBW] Toe in or not toe in
RBWers - I've had an issue with my Quickbeam for ages now where the front brakes squeal at high rpms (Tektro Oryx/Kool Stop pads). I have replaced the pads a few times, and toed them in, and no matter what, the squeal returns after a brief respite. The KoolStops recommend installing the pads square to the rim, so I did that this last time, but even so the dreaded squeal came back. Even when I do toe them in, it only goes away for a short while. Any one have any tips? I can only guess at two possibilities: that the post adjustment slips over time, or that the pads wear. At that time, I'll just rotate the front to the rear, add a new front, and be good for another 4-7K. I've flatted only two times with these tires in about 5,000 miles and I ride them very hard. Here's why - compare shipping versus having somebody magically come to your door and take the bag, which should be free of charge. You have to procure a box, pack up the bag into the box, possibly apply packing materials and tape, fill out a shipping label, go to the post office, pay for postage, either pay for insurance or take the risk that it won't arrive (self-insuring), deal with confirming arrival Compared to a no-ship transaction, a reasonable mind might conclude that the cost of all this handling is way more than $10.00 above the cost of shipping. One might eat this cost if making profit on the item otherwise, but there's no way you could pay me $10 to take this on for you. I run my tires right down to the cord! I typically get 5+ thousand miles from a set of 700c road tires; some tires seem to last much longer than others. I don't replace them when I start seeing the small cracks that typically occur. I have had a couple where the tread started to separate...they were replaced right away. There is a Ritchey Tom Slick on the front of my All-Rounder commuter bike that is as old as the bike...10 years old. It's had lots of little cracks for years now...I don't recall when I had the last flat with this tire. At the rate this tire is wearing, it may outlast me. [RBW] Re: New to me All Rounder - Mark's Rack Acorn Edition
To jump in on the poseur- All Rounder talk... Those old Mountain bikes are great and there are still a few new ones out there. Grant has espoused their virtues in the past. The year that things went south is arguable, though I would say it was in 1997 with the advent of cheap suspension and 1 1/8. In 1996 you could still get higher-end bikes without suspension-- though it was an option on most of them. I just bought a brand new, in the box Trek 930 for $150. Riv'd it up with some Nitto bits, Brooks, fenders, and racks and bags. Most of the stuff I had sitting around. For a grand total of $250. It just might be my favorite bike. Hi Andrew, I have a number of different makes and models of cantilever brakes on different bikes. Some expensive and fancy and beautiful. Other's really low cost and industrial looking. My experience is that the cheaper they are, the easier it is to set them up and simply use them without squeeling, squeeking or fussing. If I'm remembering correctly, the Tektro Oryx gets mentioned often on this list as being prone to squeeling. ( as such, it's one that I have no first hand experience with ) For my taste, the really in-expensive Tektro canti's on the peg wall at most LBS's work great with their included, also cheap pads, never squeel, or need any fussing over short of removing small bits of detritus that imbed themselves in the pads of any brake. And even then, they don't squeel, just threaten to grind through the rims due to the foreign matter. At around twenty bucks a pair, they are not beautiful, but they simply work. Any one have any tips? I can only guess at two possibilities: that the post adjustment slips over time, or that the pads wear. The odd thing is for the first year or so with these brakes, I had no trouble with them at all. [RBW] flickstands, assorted
I have come into a small pile of seven different flickstands (six clamp-on style and one that bolts onto a Raleigh frame), plus a few spare steel bits. Rather than go to the trouble of selling these one by one on ebay (and paying fees and all), I'd like to just dump the lot to an interested party. I'm cleaning stuff out and there will be more oddball finds later. Howzabout 25 bucks shipped in conus for the lot? Feel free to suggest alternatives. [RBW] Re: Tire Wear and Tear
I'm well over 4,000 on a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Supremes in 35 x 700 size, with one flat. The rear's getting worn, definitely on it's last legs, don't expect it to see 5K. Before that was Panaracer T-servs in 32 x 700 that were great for 3k then started flatting and were pretty shot at 4k (front still had life but I changed both tires to Schwalbe). Panaracer Paselas were OK, maybe 2K-2500 but I got a lot of sidewall cuts messing around off-road. My fault, not the tires. 3K sounds like good service, esp if that's your first flat. In the good old days I could grind up a Specilizied Turbo S in less than 1K miles on the rear, with plenty of flats. As they say, your mileage may vary. dougP -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bu...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Tim McNamara Sent: Thursday, April 23, 2009 6:36 AM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: [RBW] Re: Tire Wear and Tear On Apr 21, 2009, at 11:41 PM, awilliams53 wrote: How many miles should be expected from a set of tires? I think the longest wearing 700C tires I have used have been Conti Grand Prix and Ultra 2000, which lasted about 2500 miles on the rear. Also, 1 flat in 3000 miles is pretty spectacular. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] While we're talking tires..
I've generally stayed with the Pasela 559 x 32s that came stock on the Rambouillet arraya wheels, but last night my box from Bikeman showed up with 37s and I put them on my seond 559 wheelset. Took the bike out tonight. LOVED the phat tires. :) I rode a hilly route on Tuesday on the 32s, averaged 13.93 and tonight rode the same route and averaged 14.09. And was tons more comfortable!. The 37s are staying on. As is my usual, I put more air in. These are at 62 - 64 lbs (same as I run CdVs on the 650B) Quick but still cushier than say, everyone else's 23s on coarse country roads. I followed the link all excited to see the new QB and I must say I don't like the colour scheme. What's going on at RBW? I find myself writing a lot of negative comments and I don't really want to, but that silver and blue doesn't come close to the green or orange QBs. [RBW] Re: Quickbeams are here
Not so. There have been many folks who have setup an 8+ speed Quickbeam simply by coldsetting the frame. I'm not saying that's the best solution, but it has be done and works fine. Still, I'd like to see a wider spaced Quickbeam, with all the braze-on fixin's for a proper internaly-geared setup (and braze-ons for a real chain case, while we're at it). wc. looks forward to the day where his touring bike can be the perfect city bike. Doesn't the Quickbeam beg for innovation? I ran it fixed initially, freecog this last cold season. At one point I actually bought a Shimano internal 7-speed hub to put on it, but then decided the Q would become just another city bike. So I sold the wheel without using it. I have decided to keep the Q in manual multi-gear mode, because that is what makes it unique and interesting for me. When I feel the urge to monkey with it, I change free-to-fixed-to-free, a bag, or tires. Hey, maybe its time to put on some knobbies for mixed surface riding. [RBW] Re: Tire Wear and Tear
I am not answering your question here, but wanted to go on a bit about how much I like these tires. I splurged and bought a pair of 650A for my old 1966 era 3 speed. This bike is my bad weather, take anything, commuter and upright townie. I had been running cheap Kenda tires for years. The Col de la Vies gave it a silky smooth ride, even pumped up to max-recommended 55psi. This experience, and Jon Heine's BQ articles, about tire performance have enlightened me. Give me any old cheap derailer, for example, but I will splurge on great tires. Perhaps the most important component?!
