[RBW] 650B -Grand Bois Cypres tire

2009-06-11 Thread John McMurry

A little over a year ago, I made a few statements comparing tires
based on theory. I was wrong.

http://groups.google.com/group/rbw-owners-bunch/msg/ca91f41f70f6d57a

I now have a few hundred miles on a pair of 584X32mm (actual 30mm)
Grand Bois Cypres tires (same wheels, bicycle, etc.) and can
positively say, with back to back comparison, that there is a
noticeable difference in feel between the similar Maxy Fasty tires.

The most accurate comparison I can provide is: The Maxy Fasty's feel
like riding over suede whereas the Cypres' feel like riding over
velvet.

Of course, the Cypres' lighter casing and thinner tread is a trade off
for durability. That analysis is for each rider to determine on their
own. For me, that means riding the MF's for utility, errands,
commuting, and shorter rides; and saving the Cypres for my longer,
weekend rides.

Just wanted to set the record straight and acknowledge my previous
error.

[RBW] Re: Funny question this morning? (version 2: digital shifting)

2009-06-11 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders

About six years ago I was on a ride in Solvang. I was on my Kestrel
4000 (the original Kestrel with the really large aero-shped tubes)
with a Campy C-Record group. I caught a couple of other riders, both
in their 20s, both on modern bikes with integrated shifting, etc. I
reached down to shift gears (down tube) and one of the guys looked
over and asked me is that that new digital shifting? I responded
huh? He said, that digital shifting again. I then realized that my
down tube shifters, with the derailleur cables routed through the
frame, were confusing him. Mavic or somebody had put out an electronic
shifting system of some sort around that time and apparently this guy
thought I must be using that, because he'd never before seen this
radical shifting system I was using.

I responded, no, this is friction 7-speed shifting, This bike is from
1990. To which he replied, but that's a carbon bike I said
yes, carbon's been around since at least the early 80s. At that
point his eyes glazed over and I veered onto a different road.

On Jun 8, 10:33 am, Joe Bartoe jbar...@hotmail.com wrote:
 Hi Everyone,

I thought I'd share a comical moment from my morning commute:

I was riding alongside another commuter (he on a Specialized Roubaix Carbon

tube was for. What extra tube? I asked. The one under the top tube. he
replied. It took me a few seconds to figure out that he was referrring to my
 frame pump. Wow!

 Have a great Monday,

Another possibility could be to descend on the hike n' bike at Half
Moon Bay SP. There is also camping in Portola State Park, but it is a

getting out for an S24H is the whole need a reservation thing
(besides securing a quick furlough from parental responsibiities).

Anybody else on the SF peninsula have S24H spots they're willing to
divulge?

BTW, this looks to be the last summer of cheap and always available
bike 'n hike accomodations in CA state parks, since they're all going
to close due to the failure of our state govt to fix the budget
disaster This is tragic. I've GOT to get away for at least a 3-4

Dave .. . I appreciate your input.

 I wish I could use an XD w/175mm arms . . . oh I wish I could. I'm

Your Carmina, their appears to be two versions, one with both sides of

is yours? . . as apparently they take different BB's according to
Peter White.

What was the BB length before you ran into the clearance problem of
the RF ring?

Your 119 Phil BB, by centered do you mean it's symmetrical?

In regards to the FD, with a 46t ring, the vintage Deore I have has
plenty of room left to drop. Something like that may work with smaller
rings.

what might as well be the middle of nowhere, although it's so near
Silicon Valley. One has to hike or bike in, so campers are never

In the past, riders could exit Portola Redwoods by riding out on Old

Sanborn Park, at the top of Sanborn Road (above Saratoga), could be a
perfect overnight getaway. It's not as much climbing as Black
Mountain, but still a respectable distance.

If we got a group together including someone from Palo Alto, we could
camp at Foothills Park, another delightful campground. I'm fond of
Grant Ranch Park partway up Mount Hamilton Road, though from my house
it involves a tedious ride through San Jose before one gets to the
good stuff. Other possibilities would be Castle Rock, Memorial Park,
Big Basin and Butano Park.

2009-06-11 Thread Adele Newman

I'm interested. I would vote for Foothills Park if someone in Palo Alto
can come through--I'm in Mt View.

I'm a bike camping newbie--tried Half Moon Bay with a small group last
October and really liked it, but it's a tougher trip (big hill in both
directions) from my place than I like to do for an overnight at my
current fitness level. For a sub-48 if it's possible to stay 2 days...

This weekend I'm going to Uvas Canyon (Morgan Hill) with a small group
from the Almaden cycling club. I will report back...

Grant Ranch sounds good--wonder if we could use light rail or Caltrain
for part of the trip through San Jose if the group is not too large.

I could probably be talked into most of these suggestions, including
Half-Moon Bay.

[RBW] Re: Crank/BB/spindle tips (changing triple to double)

2009-06-11 Thread Garth

That TA crank needs a 115mm BB, according to some info from Sheldon
Browns site. This gives a very narrow Q of 134mm. You could go wider
on the BB, but not narrower. These arms are straight. No bow.

What is the current length of your spindle?

I don't know the Saluki well enough, but a double of this crank may
not have room to clear the small rings. I found this photo of
one. . . . it would be tight with a 30t ring. You may need a
slightly longer BB. http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2006/cc117-joeszokoli0506.html

What is the current length of your spindle?

I don't know the Saluki well enough, but a double of this crank may
not have room to clear the small rings. I found this photo of
one.  .  .  . it would be tight with a 30t ring. You may need a
 slightly longer BB.

Are you thinking of the Sugino PX that VO sells?
http://www.velo-orange.com/supxcr.html

It has a wider Q, not sure about ring clearance though.

Bicycle Classics? Mariposa? I bet Jan Heine at Bicycle Quarterly will know,
as will someone on the iBob list.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so, because Chris at VO sells this

I know on my 80's era set it's definitely tightish in there. Nothing

There was a Sam Hill known as the Father of good roads in the 1920s.
He championed the Pacific Highway. Could be a play on him.

Then there was a movie a while back, but I can't recall what the Sam

[RBW] Re: Crank/BB/spindle tips (changing triple to double)

2009-06-11 Thread MichaelH

Two suggestions. Why don't you take a look at the White VBC crank
before you buy. They have a very low Q and lots of ring flexibility.
Second, one problem with a difference of 16 between rings is that once
you shift rings you are many cogs away from the next gear, and in fact
there really isn't a good pattern when you shift rings. A difference
of 14 will put you exactly two cogs away from the next gear of about +
or - 10 % almost anywhere on the cassette. So you might want to
consider a 44 / 30. You give up a couple of gear inches at the top,
but get a smoother pattern. A 30x32 is a small enough gear for most
riders to get up most hills without a touring load, and the 44x12 (99
g.i.) will allow you to spin up to 30 mph; after that you can tuck
and coast.

Hi.  I have a tech crankarm/BB/spindle question that could use some
 expert insight.

Current:  Saluki w/ Sugino 50-40-26 triple Phil BB.  It's fine but I
definitely notice the width/tread/q-factor.  My other rides are all
singlespeeds, so that's to be expected.  The triple is decadent but
I'm seriously thinking about moving to a wide-range double.  I spend
most of my time in the 40 ring, likely in the 43 to 86 inch range.
I've done the math and a 46-30 double might suit my riding needs.  I'd
like to keep my 8 speed 12-32 XT cassette, Campy Record 9-speed chain,
and friction shift.  It's all working well.

So what I'm considering are the TA Pro 5 Vis cranks.  Apparently,
they're narrower than most cranksets so that's very appealing.
Aesthetically, gorgeous.  No reason to change the Phil BB, I assume.
But what do I need to measure/scrutinize/order now before I make the
switch?  I understand chainline but some of the BB width and spindle
 length specs confuse me.

 Open to opinions.  Cheers!

 -Darren.

[RBW] Re: Crank/BB/spindle tips (changing triple to double)

2009-06-11 Thread Darren Stone

Wow, some good feedback already. Thanks, all.

I haven't pulled the cranks to determine spindle width for sure, but I
just asked my LBS and they believe it was a 113 (maybe a 111?) that
they put in there for the Sugino triple. That doesn't seem very long,
but then this BB stuff is an aspect of bikes I'm no expert at. Does
it make sense that a TA double would need a longer spindle than I'm
currently using for a Sugino triple?

In the current and rather weird jargon term: Absolutely.

I don't have much experience with cranks built after, say, 1990, but I do
have a little, and I would guess that a modern crank might well have a
higher Q than a Cyclotourist triple on the same frame even though the
Cyclotourist triple might use a spindle that is as much as 30 mm longer than
that for the modern crank. I got a Q of 160 with a custom 145 Phil and a
Cyclotourist triple.
