[RBW] Re: Some of my Riv pics

2011-05-13 Thread Mark R.
Thanks, i have s much bandwidth on my web hosting, i have all
kinds of pages with pics.

On a good note, i have had a click on my green riv forever, and I done
everything to isolate it. Does not happen when standing and climbing,
nor coasting, but when hammering on straights.

This is what I did
Changed wheels, thought it was a front wheel. Not.
Lubed ferrules on several different wheels, as well as spoke
intersections. Not.
Tightned magnet pickup and magnet for speedo. Not, although it did
seem to help.
Lubed chain with different lubes. Not.
Changed chain. Not.
Changed cassette. Not.
Greased seat post and stem, seemed to help, but sound seemed to come
back, so not.
Changed saddles. Not.
Changed pump, seemed to go away, came back. So, not.
Tightened all bolts, found a loose brake lever. Not.
Took off crank, tightened bb cups, external. Not.
Greased chainring bolts. Not.
Took off brakes, cleaned up, out them back on, not.

Whew.

The front derailer is a braze on type, attached to a separate clamp.
I had tightened the derailler but never checked the clamp. Yes!
It was a little loose, so that explains the noise when pedaling hard
on straights, the clamp was moving a bit. I guess when I stood and
climbed it torqued the seat tube, and mitigated the issue.

Happy happy joy joy, a quiet bike

[RBW] Stem swap-my DD for your TD?

2011-05-13 Thread SteveF
I have an 8cm, “short quill,” Dirt drop stem on my B-stone and I’d
like to be able to get the bars a little lower. (quill is in as far
as it’ll go) Anyone interested in trading for an 8cm Technomic
Deluxe? (26mm bar clamp is what I have/need)

You can see the stem in my flick’r pics of the Bstone:

[RBW] My Riv Experience

2011-05-13 Thread Zack
First, an admission: I have been a member of the RBW Owners Bunch
for the past few years, but haven't actually owned a Rivendell. Until
now. This is my long-ish account of my first Riv experience.

I recently finished grad school, and wanted to reward myself for two
years of missing out on some fun because I was either working or
studying. A Riv seemed entirely appropriate as a reward! ahaha. My
wife actually agreed.

I have a Salsa Casseroll that I have Riv'd out (brooks, nitto noodles,
silver bar ends, converted to 8 speed, nitto racks and baskets) but
have never had the real thing.

I also happened to be traveling to SF last week, and realized
(sometimes I can be a bit slow) that Riv is right outside of SF. So I
decided to make the trek. I am so glad that I did.

I worked with Keven on picking out a frame. I ended up going with a
Sam Hillborne. I love the versatility, and think that it will be
sturdy enough for MY big frame.

Some things I learned:

A good place to start, when talking bikes, is with an espresso.

When you measure PBH, you have to go for it, and you have to have
someone help you. When I measured at home, by myself, I got 91. At
Riv, 94. That's a huge difference, and, as a result, moved me up to
the 64 cm Sam. I am so glad that I went to find that out.

The guys at Riv are awesome. Seriously, can't be understated. They
were all really nice to me, and to my wife who came along for the
journey to test ride a Betty Foy so we could size her for getting a
bike down the road. (She rides a 58!)

She even talked to Grant! She was outside killing time while I was
talking with Keven, and they started talking about his bumper sticker,
which is about insulin and sugar and carbs. I was totally jealous of
her, but didn't let on.

While we were talking about the build, Keven actually talked me out of
a few upgrades I thought I wanted to make to the stock stuff. Not
often that's going to happen at a shop. I appreciated it.

The building and packing that they do for their brand new bikes are
top notch, and, for me, worth every penny. Having a bike that I can
pull out of the box, wrench a few times, and be riding in about an
hour is worth it to me. I am not a bike mechanic, I am learning as I
go, but I appreciate the simplicity here.

Small gestures can really be nice. Kasey, Keven, and I were talking
about the Why We Get Fat book that Riv sells. Kasey was saying it
sounded really interesting, and was asking Keven about it. When we
were leaving, Keven gave her a copy of the book. It was great. She
was happy and had something to read on the BART, and I was happy
because I think it's awesome when people go out of their way to do
something nice.

Riv is in a crazy place. It's like up on a hill next to auto parts
repair shops. It's almost unmarked. It is one of the coolest places
ever though, as you guys can probably imagine.

So my overall thought: If you ever get to go to Riv, go. If you are
in SF, go. It's about 35 minutes on the BART, and totally worth it.

My bike:
64 cm Sam from Waterford with a custom navy pearl paint job.

Now I have to play the waiting game! I was going to be waiting for
the Waterford frame anyways, and didn't want the Taiwan frame (just
personal preference, I know they are probably the same quality) so I
went with the custom navy paint job with cream head tube to make my
bike just a bit different. I think it will look sharp. I am looking
at 8 weeks, and I am already certain I won't be able to wait!

Here is bike 1

2006 54cm Rambouillet (Coleman green formerly)
SS couplers installed by Bilenky of Philadelphia
Custom paint
Completely stock build with the following exceptions
Silver sidepulls
Connex 920 chain
SRAM 11x32 rear cassette
Brooks handlebar tape
Acorn Roll bag with tool for couplers and any 700c tubes I have left
since I will no longer have any 700c bikes
Schwalbe Marathon Supremes 700x38 with about 200 miles on them (they
still have the center 'bead')
rear light
suitcase and packing tubes plus printed instructions on how to get the
bike into the suitcase.

It does not come with the Brooks saddle. This baby is perfectly formed
to my butt.

There are a couple of minor paint dings that I have tried to capture
in the pictures. The chain became jammed between the chain stay and
the inner cog once and chewed up the paint in there pretty good and I
tried to capture that as well. All spots have been touched up with
Testers paint that matches pretty well. I will add that to the
shipment.

The bike will ship in the suitcase and shipping should be around $90
on UPS.

Here are pictures -

Condition is a solid 9/10 on the frame and fork. No scratches, dents

 with my asking price.

The Specialized/Nitto Dirt Drop Stem is the only part on the bike that
has scuffs and a scratch. If it bothers you get a new stem.
Also the fenders are a little less than perfect with a few dents and 2
extra holes drilled for a front rack. I covered the holes with Foil

[RBW] Re: Fast 650B Tire Options

2011-05-13 Thread islaysteve
Well, different strokes, I guess. My Bleriot, on the whole, feels
MUCH nicer than my former pure road bike with 23's at 100+ psi. This
was one of my goals, and it's why I'm loving this bike so much. I
decided to go with the max pressure initially because I was concerned
about rolling resistance/increase in effort while I am working to
regain some level of fitness. That gain is happening. Meanwhile,
the bike feels smooth and just plain great, so I see no need to change
anything right now. Crossing between two (of the many) bicycle
cultures is interesting and I'm learning that I can and will take what
I want of each (i.e. STI levers on my Riv). There's an interesting
post on Lovely Bicycle! that sort of illustrates this topic (but don't
go there now, you won't see that post because of a problem with
Blogger). It's about the author's first training ride (on a Riv) with
some hardcore racers. Cheers, Steve

not all tires are created equal. a high quality narrow tire with a
supple casing can be comfortable - more comfortable, in fact, than a
wider tire with a beefed up, puncture resistant casing (like the
nifty).

in any event, tires, in any size, need not be inflated to max pressure
to minimize/optimize rolling resistance. there's certainly a middle
ground between max psi and underinflated.

[RBW] Simple dreaming

2011-05-13 Thread andrew hill
Ok.. I'm sure some of you can relate.

You think.. nice! A new Rivendell frame for ~ $1K.

I can build a less-expensive bike than what I've already got, and it's not that
bad... feels totally justifiable. And this one is a single speed - how much
will it cost even with a couple of nice parts, without all that expensive
shifter/derailleur nonsense...

And then you start choosing parts.

Here is my simple build list, after I got done dreaming and plotting. Sadly,
only a couple of these things were in my parts bin, so I managed to build my
most spendy Rivendell yet. : /

58cm SimpleOne

Interface:
--
Nitto Randonneur bars (45cm)
Newbaums Orange
Dirt drop stem (10cm)
Brooks Special, Honey
Nitto S-84 seatpost
White Industries urban platform / Bruce Gordon stainless half clips.

Wheelset
---
Phil Wood high-flange free/free hubset, 32h, SLR drilled
Velocity Fusion rims, double butted DT Swiss (laced radial front / 3-cross
rear), brass nipples.
Schwalbe Marathon Racer 700c x 35

Drivetrain
---
White Industries Ti BB (113mm)
White Industries ENO Crank (170mm) silver
White Industries Dos ENO 16/19t
White Industries Double chainring, 38/35t
3/32 single-speed chain
Sugino Crank Fixing Bolts (8mm)

Stoptrain
---
Sram S500 road levers
Jagwire brake cables
Tektro CR720 cantilevers

Aside from rim-tape and tubes, did I miss anything?

I've got bottle cages, beeswax, corks, and twine, and the specific tools for
those cranks and bb. The bar wrap will be shellacked down from orange to
something approaching the honey of the saddle.

Might put on an extra R-15 rack that I've got, or a sturdier and sleeker
pannier rack if i can find one.
Thinking about a 21t freewheel for the other side, too, or a 14t...

Comon - who else has been madly plotting a SimpleOne or not-so-SimpleOne?

Best,
Andrew

[RBW] Re: Simple dreaming

2011-05-13 Thread Ron MH
Andrew, sounds like a good set up. I'd make one change, though.
Instead of a free/free rear hub, I'd go for either free/fixed or fixed/
fixed. The reason is, you can always put a freewheel on a fixed hub
but you can never put a fixed cog on a freewheel hub. You limit your
options by going free/free; you leave your options completely open
with fixed/fixed. Maybe you don't want to try fixed gear now, but you
may some day. I stared with a fixed/free setup and usually rode with
the freewheel side. Now I'd say 80% of my miles are on the fixed gear
side; it's a great way to go.

Good luck with your mad plotting! ;-)

[RBW] Re: My Riv Experience

2011-05-13 Thread Roger
More curious than anything else. I'm not sure but I thInk only Waterfords have
undertubes, and a 64cm monotube would have a quite long head tube for current
Rivthink.

I recently rode a 64cm Hillborne and it felt nice and big compared to my 65cm
Mercian, which has a much shorter headtube and a jacked up Technomic.

[RBW] Re: VO Porter Rack

2011-05-13 Thread Jeremy Till
Hi Minh- I installed one on an old Takara touring frame I built up as
a fixed gear. The rack attaches to the fork crown via a thick metal
(think it's steel) strap, which is bent 90 deg at one end and drilled
regularly along it's length. The idea is you bolt the bent end to
your fork crown at its center hole and bolt the strap to two bosses
welded onto the centerline of the rack. There's a third boss forward
of these two for bolting it to a metal fender. Of course, every
different bike is going to have a slightly different relationship
between the rack and fork crown, and at least on mind, it required
some bending of the strap to get things snug. I also ended up bolting
to the third (fender boss) and only the forward of the two bosses.

I'd say that fitting to a bike with sidepulls would be a challenge,
since the bent end isn't very long probably wouldn't be able to clear
the caliper. If you were using centerpull calipers were the arms only
go up as they engage, you might be able to make it work. My bike had
cantilevers so it wasn't a problem.

All that being said, after riding it for a month or so I took it off
that bike. I didn't like the way the bike handled with my normal
commuting loads, and there was way too much flex for my taste.
Although I'm not sure how much of that was the rack, it is also a very
large frame (66cm) with a technomic stem raised fairly high (at least
100mm of quill showing). No idea what the trail is. I like the
handling much better with my preferred load-carrying system: a large
transverse saddlebag supported by a blackburn rear rack.

i would also like to know how well it works if you don't have them
anchored to fenders as VO really talk that up in the instructions...

Instead of a free/free rear hub, I'd go for either free/fixed or fixed/

but you can never put a fixed cog on a freewheel hub.

Good luck with your mad plotting! ;-)

[RBW] Re: Simple dreaming

2011-05-13 Thread mike

I've got one on order since January... 62 cm

Interface:
---
bars/stem TBD Depends on the fit. I have a couple of drops and one
old MTB bar and assorted stems in the parts bin. One combo will
work. I'm leaning toward some sort of drops.
Nitto Humble Seatpost
Saddle - got a couple of them ready
Grip King pedals

Wheelset
---
Front - Suntour Superbe Pro '86 32 hole laced to Mavic MA-40
Rear - Dura Ace track hub, not built yet, gotta get going on that
Tires - something around 35mm

Drivetrain

BB - latest from Riv says it's included, otherwise Superbe Pro '86 if
the spindle is the right length
Crank - probably '73 Dura-Ace (130 BCD) I have 39/44 on it now.
alternate is specialized triple from an '86 stumpjumper (110/74)
second alternate is '86 Superbe Pro, but the 144 BCD is too big so
it's unlikely
FW - probably a White ind, haven't decided between single or double
Chain - yep
I'm likely to put a guard from BBGbashguard.com on the outer of the
crank. After I settle on the crank.

Brakes
---
Tektro CR720 - in my cart at Riv in another browser tab
Levers - Superbe pro if I have Drop bars, Tektro if I use MTB size
bars
cables/housing/hangers - Yes

Bolt-on
-
Rear rack, probably a blackburn from about '91
Front rack - Plescher
Front basket - Wald the smaller one Riv sells
Lights - I like the 3xAAA tactical led flashlight from Costco,
mounted to the bars with a two-fish block or crossed hose clamps. I
use NiMh batteries and have chargers at home and work.

I still need the brakes, chain, Freewheel, and to get the rear wheel
built. I might need to fiddle a little with the BB length. Everything
else is ready to go. I may start with a cheaper freewheel and get a
White once I'm happy with the gearing.

Hi Minh. I just uploaded a pic to my Flickr account for you:

I use the rack with my Kogswell P/R. The rack is an early version when
they were built by Ahren Rogers (don't know if the new ones differ).
The attachment is solid. I don't feel any swaying, which I've heard
others observe on their set-ups. Note that the rack is mounted close
to the headtube with a shorter length tang than the pics on the
installed rack on VO's web site. Also, my rack doesn't attach to the
fenders, as you mention. I definitely haven't tried finding its upper
limit on load-carrying capacity, but it's handled some decent amount
of weight:

Re: [RBW] Re: VO Porter Rack

2011-05-13 Thread Tim McNamara
I'm not surprised about flex, looking at the photos on the VO site. The rack
lacks good triangulation laterally- the legs should be attached to the outer
rails rather than to the next inside rail. This has always bothered me about
this design and is why I haven't bought one. With greater lateral
triangulation it would probably flex very little. Flex resulting from the
frame of the bike, of course, would be outside of VO's control.

However, kudos to VO for even taking the risk to make products like this. The
market can't be all that big.

[RBW] Re: Simple dreaming

2011-05-13 Thread benzzoy
Not that I'm anti-Ti or anything, but after using a bunch of Ti-
spindled square-tapered BB, including the White Industries version, I
would recommend against them unless you're trying to break some sort
of weight record (and clearly with Phil Wood hubs, you're not). Ti-
spindled square-tapered BBs are very flexy even at my size and weight
(5'10, 140+lb then) so I hate to think how much more flexy it will be
for someone who rides a 58cm frame. The upside of a steel spindle,
apart from being nicely stiffer, is that it's cheaper.

Tubes? I would go for Schwalbe's. They're of noticeably higher
quality (more uniform and with nice reinforcements) and seem to hold
pressure longer.
