That's what I think too. And if I KNEW that's what it would be, I'd be tempted.

By the way, looking at those pictures of Grant and the Pushing the
Pedals dude camping makes me think two things:

(1) I need to take my bike for a small jaunt to the Marin Headlands.
Angel Island, too. Those S24O's look great.

(2) As I suspected, the Large Saddlesack by itself isn't big enough
for camping. Grant appears to be using one, but he is also using some
sort of large front bag, and he has jammed a lot of stuff on top of
the front bag too.

[RBW] Re: HS

2011-06-25 Thread Fuz
- I did notice that Grant has been featured on http://pushingthepedals.com/
just before the announcement of the HS.

- I also note more than a few of the bikes featured on
http://pushingthepedals.com/ have single ring cranks with an IGH.

- Also noted that there has been talk of a simple commuter bike.

Deducing from what exists of the current model lineup, what could fit in,
and what ancillary data has circulated, my guess is also that it will be a
highly integrated IGH frame with provisions for internal wiring/cabling,
chain-guard, disc brakes, lighting, along with the usual riv design
philosophies. It's about as modernish as you can get, but outside of
questionably proven new tech.

For its purpose it will have be be somewhat plain to avoid looking like a
theft target, with a durable (possibly power coated?) finish.

But part of me has some doubt since a bike like this already exists in one
form or another. Like the Retrovelo Rolf 14 model.

[RBW] replacing bearings in Phil "Rivy" FW hub

2011-06-25 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Hi, all!

Anyone ever replaced the bearings in a Phil "Rivy" FW hub?

The FSA instructions on the Phil site are wrong enough that I don't want to
follow them without some additional info / assurance for fear of breaking
something (or, more likely given the strength of this hub's components, hurting
myself).

Anybody ever actually done this? If so, how did you get the old bearings out? I
have figured a way to get the end caps off but not how to get the old bearings
out.

Thanks!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

Ditto on the Alfine chain tensioner. I used it in a past life on my
2x8 Fargo (with Alfine 8 speed hub and front derailleur)... Gosh, If I
had only known about the Hammerschmidt!!!

BTW just the other day I rode a freeride bike with a Hammerschmidt
crank... WOW, I've never felt anything shift so instantaneously... It
may look a bit kludgy, but it performs flawlessly and instantly.

Re: [RBW] Chain Tensioners

2011-06-25 Thread Eric Daume
I use the cheapie Pyramid brand tensioner that Performance, Nashbar, etc all
relabel. It's worked fine in my experience, although the Surly and Soulcraft
look nicer. You can see mine here:

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/QOx-rXvAa5-vqO-T30joeA?feat=directlink

I added a welded on washer to the jockey shaft fixing bolt, making
essentially into a wingnut. This allows me to do a tool-free switch from a
road gear (say, 36 x 16) to a mountain gear (32 x 20)--just slide the chain
over.

[RBW] Re: Chain Tensioners

2011-06-25 Thread R Gonet
For a while I had a Shimano Nexus hub on my AHH and needed a chain
tensioner. I tried the Shimano tensioner and, for some that reason
that I can no longer remember, it did not work and I had to return
it. I think it had something to do with the spacing. I then tried
the Surly with great success and later used another Surly on a SS
project bike that I built.
