[RBW] Re: Fender Choice

2011-06-29 Thread tomm
Congrats on your new SH!

To my knowledge the largest hammered Honjos are only 43 mm wide. I
have a set on my AHH with 32 mm Marathons. They are just wide enough
to be fully functional. My Jack Browns or 35 mm Marathons fit but
aren't super functional in that the fender doesn't cover as well and
water sprays out the side. If you want metal fenders you might want
to consider the Berthoud 50 mm stainless fenders. I want to switch my
hammered Honjos for a pair of the 50 mm Berthouds since the Honjos
really do limit the size tire.

2011-06-29 Thread islaysteve
Rex, Congratulations from another recent-new-Riv owner! You're going to love
your bike even more when you ride it. I agree with Jim about the hubs: I
mounted VO wheels (105 hubs, 130mm) in a Bleriot frame which also takes
135mm. There were no issues whatsoever. I just installed the wheel and
tightened the skewers. In my case these are VO anti-theft skewers, so you
screw them tight. So far, they work great, YMMV. I felt the same as you
regarding the shiny hubs/wheels. The VO wheels, 650b in my case, look great
and ride great. Of course we want to see pictures, especially of that
color. Good riding, Steve

There is also a 66 cm rambouillet frame and fork on Portland (OR)
craigslist for $1100.

Riv's measurements are C-T, so this would be the 63 cm. Let's say the

 actually looking at a frame).

63 cm C-T would become 61.5 cm C-C, which would be 24.2 after converting. So
even if I'm wrong on the 1.5 cm part, that's likely the size.

No connection to me, accept that I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it were a
little smaller.  Search craigslist Eureka for Rivendell Romulus and you'll
 find a canti-Rom complete bike for $1000.  The seller says it's 24 c-to-c,
 making it a 62cm?

I was faced with the same issue when building my Sam. I went with the
Phils, 36s, and a 7-speed DuraAce FW with absolutely no regrets. When
you amortize the extra $$$ over the life of the bike it amounts to
chump change. You have to decide whether a year from now you'll be
saying I should have done the Phils. or I wish I would have done
the Phils.

After a nearly unbearable wait I'm finally a riv owner!!!   I drove down on
Saturday and picked up my 67cm AHH frame!  It's a work of art!  I went with
a custom color, and after many hours of second guessing my decision I
finally got to see it!  I have to admit that it came out a lot lighter than
I expected from the paint chip, and I was a little bit upset when I first
saw it, but once I started hanging shiny bits on it I started to realize
that it's probably a lot nicer than what I'd originally asked for, and it's
really growing on me -- I think now that it's a really nice color!  [The big
reveal coming once the shiny bits are properly hung :-) ].

So, speaking of shiny bits... there's one rather important one that I
haven't decided on yet!  Wheels!  I really like the classic polished hubs,
and this bike is beautiful and really deserves some nice looking hubs, but a
set of Rivy hubs approach the the amount that I was hoping to spend on the
entire wheelset!  I considered the VO Grand Cru hubs, which are a bit
cheaper, but they don't have the 32 spoke hubs that I wanted (I like the
look of 32 spoke hubs, and I'm a lightweight rider for my height, I have a
touring bike for the heavy loaded stuff).  I like freewheels, and 7 speeds
is perfect [prefer it over 9], but am probably leaning more toward a
cassette just because quality freewheels are getting harder to find.  The
problem that I'm having is that it's harder to find 135 mm hubs that meet
these requirements than 130 mm hubs, as 135 mm stuff is usually MTB oriented
and more colorful (usually anodized).  So, I'm starting to think about maybe
getting a set of road hubs and buying a new axle and respacing it... anybody
ever done that?  Is it hard to find proper axles?  It looks like Harris
sells all the parts that I need...

  Thanks!

2011-06-29 Thread Benedikt
I've got some 700x32's tucked under VO's 45mm hammered fenders and
they fit fine on my Hillborne. I tried to fit a 40mm tire in there
and it was a no go so you would need larger then 45mm fenders. I took
a measurement of the frame and the front fork right around where my
fenders sit and it's about 50mm's of clearance. That leaves you with
limited choices. You might be able to modify a slightly larger fender
and still fit it in there.

Phil hubs are the best money can buy. I tried a set of budget wheels when I
was first indroduced to the Riv ride. My first Riv a 650b Saluki w. a budget
wheelset. Although the ride was very impressive it didn't take off till a
year later when I had a 8 speed Phil wheelset built. I really noticed a
difference in how the bike handled and rolled. Wheels are a very important
decision. Why not go w. the best. I didn't have the money originally for the
Phil set. In the long run you will save and Phil has a better resale value
if you decide to sell.

Congrats! Re-spacing 130mm Shimano hubs to fit 135 frames is pretty
easy--my local shop switched axles for me for under $20.

But if you want a set of MUSA shiny cassette hubs, get a set of White
Industry's. Nice hubs and one of the less expensive domestically produced
boutique hubsets out there. I have a set for my upcoming 650b custom and
they look great.

Just for reference i have 48mm (i'm pretty sure) fluted VO fenders and
i had to squeeze them at the chainstay a bit to get them to fit. I

i'm running 37mm tires that measure out closer to 35mm, i think 40mm

this thing tight, i crank it down to what i think is tight, but the
rear of my brooks will dip within about 10 miles. When i look at the
post there are clear gouge marks in the post from the clamp digging
in, but still i can't get it tight. Is there something i'm missing?
could i have mounted the clamp backwards? Any ideas, i'm sure it's

[RBW] Re: Fender Choice

2011-06-29 Thread Ediblestarfish
Here's my view on the SKS/Esge Longboard fenders.

I have 38mm Schwalbe 650b's on my 54cm AHH with 45mm SKS/Esge Longboard
fenders. Tight fit, but it works; not sure I would try it with 40mm tires.
Adjustment is pretty easy, but takes a long time to tweak it to precise
tolerances so it stays centered.

Main problem is that they are flexy and hit a resonant frequency under
certain conditions that shake the whole bike. E.g., at higher speeds, the
gigantic flap at the bottom of the extended front fender would catch a lot
of wind and start hitting the tire, which drove me nuts. Quickly took the
flaps off both fenders. That helped, but didn't get rid of it entirely.

About the only thing I like about them is that they are relatively light,
and don't get that 'twang' when you kick up pebbles. I can move at
relatively moderate or slow speeds without issues.

I can't say this will happen to you, or anyone else, but I'm eying some
metal fenders to see if it can reduce of eliminate the problems I have.

Sometimes the cheaper seatposts are soft enough that the clamp assembly cuts
into the post. In other words, it takes a set position and will tend to
slip back into that position when tightened.

It might also be that the clamp mechanism is made from stamped parts, or
improperly hardened parts, so that once under load, they will bend and slip
until they wedge themselves into place - once again out of alignment.

What happens if you start it with the nose dropped slightly?

Oh, and you are greasing the threads of the bolt, right? If not, it might be
that you aren't really torquing it enough.
