I will second both of Etaban's posts. The Ram/Rom was designed as a road bike. Thanks, Esteban. I like your suggestion, and am leaning hard in that direction. If I didn't spend so much time on gravel roads, it would be a slam dunk. I love Hetres on gravel. Re: [RBW] Re: Upgrading my Trek 520?
I have a Trek 520 that I used as a commuter and loaded tourer for many years. When I bought it in 1989 I had the LBS switch out the 105 cranks for MB cranks as it too thought it didn't have sufficiently low gears for touring. Over the years I made lots of upgrades and made it as close to a Rivendell ride as possible. The original Bontrager rims developed cracks at the spoke holes so I built Dyad wheels with a SON hub for generator lights. Can't say enough positive things about having headlight and tailights available at all times! Last summer I bought a Hunqapillar for these duties and modified the Trek to be a city bike, with flat bars and a single chainring. The Hunq is a vast improvement over the Trek. It has that Rivendell ride where the Trek was solid but kind of dead. Still keeping the Trek as it has a lot of sentimental value and was there before I drank the Rivendell Kool-aid. [RBW] Re: SRAM Automatix versus Sturmey Archer S2 Duomatic on SimpleOne
I don't have either of these hubs, but I do have a Fichtel Sachs Automatic that I ran on the Quickbeam for a while. It has aspects of each of these hubs, being an automatic-shifting 2-speed with a coaster brake. It's really really fun. Two speeds are useful, especially commuting, coming away from stoplights. I need to adjust my spring so it shifts later, since I end up climbing in the high gear unless I slow way down. The automatic shifting feels really cool, but the coaster brake is not my favorite. Mostly it's annoying when you're at a stop sign and want to adjust your pedals. It doesn't work like a fixed gear OR a coasting bike. I think you'd be really happy with either, but I would choose the S2 kickback hub. There's no coaster brake, and you get to choose when to shift. [RBW] Re: Fenders/Tires for Rom
I have a Ram with 33mm Jack Browns and 45mm VO stainless fenders. A bit of a pain on the install (a couple hours on install, some dremel work and tweaking) but fits well. I did get the Silver brakes for additional muscle (rather than room) and this probably makes a difference. My $.02 is you can get 32/33 tires under you w/Ram/Rom as long as you go long reach brakes, are patient and have faith that it will all work. Lastly the VO fenders are a great look w/Riv but their stays (at least w/the single eyelet bolts) rattle like hell out of the box. I ended up wrapping the eyelet bolts with the same hemp twine Riv sells for the handlebar wrap. This also keeps the fender stable by keeping it from shifting/twisting as you go over bumps. Much better results after this last touch. Bruce On Jan 5, 4:38 am, Michael Hechmer mhech...@gmail.com wrote: I will second both of Etaban's posts. The Ram/Rom was designed as a road bike. Well, these last few posts are interesting in that I'm keeping a watch out for a touring bike (or f/f) for my daughter. [RBW] Re: Upgrading my Trek 520?
Rex, I have basically the same Trek, same size--mine is slightly older, a 2002 model. It has been a great bike for me--it got me into cycling seriously back in high school, got me coast-to-coast when I was 17, and has basically been whatever bike I needed it to be since then without much of a complaint. However, its fit--esp. since I discovered Riv--has been somewhat questionable. I've never really been sure what was up, but it is definitely the smallest 62cm frame I have ever seen; namely, it's head tube is super short for that size. I think part of it is overly generous measurement on the part of trek (center to way top of seat tube, maybe?), and also that, at least in my model year, it was one of the first years that they spec'ed a threadless headset, and I think the product designers hadn't quite wrapped their head around how switching to threadless removes a few cm's of stack height from the front end. The headtube still ends exactly at the top tube junction, as was common on frames for threaded headsets. I think there's an interview with Richard Sachs by Grant in an old Reader where they discuss this issue, with Sachs explaining that this is why he designed lugs for extended head tubes when he started using threadless headsets. For sure, if you look at bikes designed after the dominance of threadless, they tend to have a few more mm of headtube above the top tube junction. Anyways, that's my theory about the wonky fit of the TIG-welded 520's. I'll probably never sell mine because of its sentimental value--i'll hang the frame on the wall if i'm not using it. Recently, I've been thinking about putting upright bars--like an albatross--on it to deal with the fit issues without using some kind of crazy stem. Or maybe I'll put on the Nitto Trekking bar I picked up at the garage sale a little while back...although my fiance looks at me like I'm crazy when I say that. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Upgrading my Trek 520?
One of the main reasons I bought an AHH is because it fit me so well. I, like you have always had to fiddle with long seat posts, too short TT, stem extensions, etc to get a good fit. And It doesn't even sound like I'm as tall as you (I was on the 65/67 AHH divide... went 65 and happy about it). I don't have a Hunq but I do remember reading somewhere that if an Atlantis is too small go Hunq or Bomba for loaded touring. I think about a Hunq for loaded touring or just to have a fat tire off road bike, but the reality is that anything more than one or 2 night out is not in the cards for a while and the off roading I'm interested in is do-able with AHH with 40mm tires. In the spirit of spreading out the cost... I bought the AHH as a frame and got components from donor bikes and have been upgrading slowly. Proper fit and being suitable for the intended purpose are equally paramount criteria in my mind. Re: [RBW] Re: Fender Frustration
Hey René, I actually did use one of the bolt slots to stabilize the fender (by switching out the original bolt to a longer one that goes through the fender, adding a spacer between the fender and the diving board, and securing the fender with nut/washer), but it's still rubbing when the wheel is turned all the way to the right. Is it similar to the way you secure your fender? Comparing to the boss on the Mini Front, the bolt is at least an inch further back (towards the rear of the bike). I can't help but wonder if the rubbing would stop should the fender be secured closer to the front tip. Does anyone have a spare long front diving board that used to come with Mark's rack? On the hand, I also wonder about my installation. The relative space between the tire and the fender should stay constant when the fork turns, right? There must be something that got caught and causes a slight rotation on the fender line. Perhaps something underneath the fork crown daruma? Should I loosen the nut under the fork crown daruma a bit? Any suggestions? I'll try to post some pictures later (I moved the bikes to the bike room after our ride on the 1st as the weather turned cold). Thanks! You may have misread Bill's post (or maybe I am misreading it).I don't think anyone was suggesting riding in the center of the road. However, 'taking the lane', or moving away from the shoulder to discourage motor traffic from trying to 'squeeze past' when it is not safe to do so (road is too narrow, oncoming traffic, debris in the shoulder, etc) is a well documented strategy for riding a bicycle safely on the roads. Sure it isn't gospel, and some disagree with this strategy- but to heck with anyone (police or whoever) who tells me not to use it- it has saved my ass many times, whereas obsequiously hugging the shoulder has proven hazardous (in my experience). I believe the main point of James' post is being missed. It seems directed at arguments among cyclers here recently. Re: [RBW] Re: (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?
When I ride in the center of the lane, which is normally called taking the lane, I don't do it in the spirit of retaliation. Rather, I do it when in my judgement the lane is too narrow to allow passing. I hope to signal to following cars that there is no room to pass and they shouldn't try it. Hugging the gutter in such cases tempts drivers to try to pass when it's unsafe. Re: [RBW] Re: (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?
Actually in Honolulu taking the lane is more or less gospel...at least when necessary. I generally keep a copy of the regulations in my bag just in case I ever do get stopped (hasn't happened yet). Riding on roadways and bikeways (§291C-145) When traveling slower than the normal speed of traffic, bicyclists are to ride as close to the right hand curb or on the shoulder of the roadway, as practical. Be careful when passing a stopped vehicle or one going the same direction. There are the allowed exceptions to the right hand rule: When preparing for a left turn at an intersection, private road, or driveway; When necessary to avoid hazards that make it unsafe to ride along the right hand curb. *This includes situations where the traffic lane is too narrow for a bicycle and a motor vehicle to travel safely side-by-side*; or For me this is particularly applicable on one short stretch of road I have to everyday on my way home from work. It's four lanes, two each way, and the right hand lane is very slow because of folks turning right to schools and a freeway entrance. I ride in the left hand lane because I'm much faster than the traffic in the right hand lane and not any slower than the left lane traffic. To top it off I turn left after about three blocks of this anyway. The police have never said a thing, indeed given the schools in the area and the level of traffic they are often in the around and I've actually ridden in the left lane behind them. Today though, on my way to work I had to deal with a one of things I hate the most, a driver coming up behind me, pulling out to pass then immediately getting back into the right lane to make a right hand turn in front of me. As there was little traffic I was able to move to the left lane to pass him while he was still slowing for the turn. What's up with that? If he'd have just stayed behind me he'd have been to the corner at pretty much exactly the same time anyway. Sigh. It was a nice morning and I didn't even yell. Maybe I'm getting better. :-) Aloha, Bob On Thu, Jan 5, 2012 at 7:43 AM, newenglandbike matthiasbe...@gmail.comwrote: You may have misread Bill's post (or maybe I am misreading it).I don't think anyone was suggesting riding in the center of the road. [RBW] Re: Fender Frustration
Chris, I think you're going down the right track, as your turning the wheel the fender is likely pivoting somewhere. it could be that the stays for the fender are not aligned, it could be you're not getting a good seat at the daruma between the daruma rubber washer and the fender, so that it's creeping into the head-tube. I would not loosen the daruma as i think that would cause it to wobble/creep more. The herse guys have this nifty widget http://www.renehersestore.com/servlet/the-520/Fender-Wedge-for-underside/Detail meant to create a more positive seal between fender and daruma. i was looking at this until i rigged up my DIY solution as i was having the same sort of wobble/creep at the front of my fender. On Jan 5, 11:39 am, Chris cch...@gmail.com wrote: Hey René, I actually did use one of the bolt slots to stabilize the fender (by switching out the original bolt to a longer one that goes through the fender, adding a spacer between the fender and the diving board, and securing the fender with nut/washer), but it's still rubbing when the wheel is turned all the way to the right. Thanks! Re: [RBW] Re: (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?
On the topic of taking the lane , I've had much success with hand signals. I get a hand out to warn the driver I'm pulling away from parked cars now; hold up one finger to exclaim hang on a minute and we'll get past this together; then a wave-by as I swerve back to the right when the curb opens up. I purposely do an exaggerated big swoop to the right, which tells the driver I'm getting the heck outta your way so you can get on with your day, and thanks for waiting. I believe this goes a long way towards keeping the peace, because the driver is being communicated with that this is temporary, instead of sitting there thinking of me as an endless road block. I also think it teaches them what we're dealing with: Oh, he's not just arbitrarily taking up the whole damn road. He's run out of room. If we think all drivers instinctively understand this, we're wrong. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I have found that drivers appreciate it when I let them know that they're behind me. I wave forward when it's safe to pass, and if there's a car coming that they may not be able to see (or if there's something in road that I need to ride around, again that they probably wouldn't see) I wave them back. Almost without exception, I get a good response from motorists. ... Which brings to mind the time that a friend and I pulled up to a stop at a signal. The motorist who also stopped at the signal rolled his window down to thank us for stopping, noting that most riders wouldn't have stopped. Being guilty of that myself (not stopping) on occasion, I know that there is work to be done to build good will for cyclists, which is why I try to be as courteous as possible whenever I can. --Eric N Sent from my iPad2 On Jan 5, 2012, at 10:41 AM, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote: I had that experience up on Wildcat. Re: [RBW] Re: (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?
I've found that, even in bike lanes, riding more toward the left actually encourages drivers to give me more room: creeping along at the far right, even in bike lanes, seems to tell drivers that they can crowd the bike lane. Fortunately, Albuquerque is both pretty mellow for cyclists and (at least in the newer parts) has good bicycle infrastructure in lanes, routes, paths and -- a few years ago -- publicity to share the road. I've had a few idiots come close to sideswiping me, but 8/10 of this sort of thing -- in itself rare, thank God -- is simply inattention rather than deliberate. We've had a 3-foot law for at least a decade. An aside: our new Republican governor, who took over in a surprise win from 3-timer, old-time-NM-Democrat-machine mayor Marty Chavez, who did much to make the city more aesthetic, livable and cycle-able, has very meritoriously kept cycling and other livability goals at the top of his administration's list. I was once buzzed on an uphill by a huge black SUV, and I moved over toward the center of the lane thinking that might dissuade the next idiot from trying the same stunt. Well, a sheriff's car pulled me over to lecture me for not riding far enough to the right. I was tempted to ask him how many cars he had pulled over in his career for buzzing cyclists too close, but I figured arguing with the long arm of the law might not be a good idea. Thanks for the reminder to be careful out there, and to be respectful of others on the forum because life's just too short. Actually it was relating to the subject line.. ROADEO or RBI.. then when the Roadeo is suggested it is treated as being no different than an 80's whatever. I disagree with that and that you get the Rivendell ride from all of those bikes. Not a matter of anger or being snarky, just thought it was funny. I've seen my wife and she had the xtralight Merlin, and a Lemond. Both sat there and were never ridden after she got the Rodeo. Eventually she sold the Merlin extralite. Every review I've seen on the Roadeo from other owners on here has been very positive. The few short rides I've had on the Roadeo have been impressive. Just wish they made won big enough for me. Considering is a swiss army knife no different than an 80's trek or just an over priced steel wannabe is ok.. just surprising since we are in a Rivendell forum. Figured some other owners would have spoke up. Patrick, yes I took it as baiting and didn't think you were serious about wanting an honest review or thought as you've read the same posts and more as I have. I also know that how a bike feels to me may not be the same as it will feel for you. Just as I don't believe a long haul trucker rides the same as an atlantis. For me it's a fact I've ridden them side by side... other disagree. Take the silver brakes off and put on a dura-ace group, thread less headset and 700x25 tires and go. Bicycle magazine indicated they didn't think the roadeo was smooth enough when they made the tires hard instead of the pressure that was recommended. So as much as I enjoy your posts about your trikes and other bikes and such.. yes this one felt like a bait people into giving information that you had no intention of using. Since you already had the information about the Roadeo posted on here many times with outside reviews that you've read. With the large list of objections and reasons and price to not own a Roadeo why ask about it even? That was my perspective on it. So ya baiting and funny.. not a slam on you.. just an observation. Sure as heck not a word in anger.. see all of this typing to say what I said in what a sentence.. :) When I bought my AHH I took a 14 hour round trip drive to ride one before ordering. I'm sure I miss a lot of the humor because I've never been heavily immersed in bike culture. I don't do group rides, or tour, or brevets. I then parted out the Campagnolo Super Record stuff through the regular channels. At the moment my running total has me owning the frame/fork/headset/saddle/wheelset/handlebar for a total outlay of $25. It takes 28s and doesn't even hint at racks or fenders, because it has no brazeons. I'm supremely happy with it. It's got a 2x7 compact double drivetrain on it now, and I will be using it on brevets this year. I've even got it set up with a decaleur and have ridden it with a sizeable handlebar bag, despite the guarantees that such a setup is absolutely unrideable. As willing as you've demonstrated yourself to be in parting things out, I think this route could be fruitful for you as well. There are good geo-charts available for both Trek and Bridgestone online, so you could buy off craigslist without having to ask a bunch of sizing minutia from your seller. Rene is gracious to a fault, and his company was great! He's correct about the compliments that he received. And I was amazed at the numbers of those compliments. I attribute that to the stunning Atlantis that he rides. To borrow a phrase from my boat-building days, Rene really pays keen attention to detail, and that makes all the difference. Virtually everyone who called out a compliment was passing the both of us on a racing bike. I was chagrined because my Riv went virtually unnoticed behind Rene's gorgeous Atlantis. Even the sole Riv-rider we came across didn't notice that I, too, was aboard a Riv until I commented on the fact after he had announced It's nice to see another Riv rider out here! Bidding good-bye to 2011 couldn't have been any better. In great RBW spirit, I finally met fellow list member Ray Shine who had always offered to take me on rides around San Francisco. It is entirely my fault for having taken so long, but it finally happened. Yesterday I met with Ray at the San Francisco Marina and together we rode over accross the Golden Gate Bridge and then up Conzelman Road into the Marin Headlands to do Ray's loop. Being the last day of the year and with the gorgeous weather we had, the place was invaded with tourists on cars and rental bikes. Luckily, the rental bikes were turning left into Sausalito and not going up Conzelman Road. Ray was amazed at how many cars there were, so we were careful but had no issues. Plenty of roadies on CF bikes passed us, and while no one asked how much our bikes weighed (who would ask that after taking a look at me...?) I got an incredible number of compliments on my Atlantis. Even Ray complimented my bike when we first met. He was complaining that no one was giving him any compliments on his black Yves, although a couple of people complimented us both as they passed. Still, he couldn't believe the number of compliments. After taking some photos of the view of the Golden Gate, the city and the Bay at the highest vista point, we went down the 18% descent that has seen Ray crash twice last year; fist in January when he broke his collarbone and recently when he had his rim blow-out. We went cautiosly with cars coming behind us and pumping the brakes so the rims wouldn't heat up too much and stopped in the middle where more photos were taken. That descent is absolutely breathtaking. It's not just the 18% downhill grade, it's the fact that you have the ocean in front of you and just a guard-rail between you and the breathtaking view. Just awesome. After the descent we continued on Conzelman Road to its end, took some more photos of the two bikes and then Ray got me on the Atlantis with all the silver parts reflecting the setting sun. Back via Bunker Road and then up to Conzelman Road via McCullough Road for a final descent on the steepest initial climb up Conzelman, back over the Golden Gate Bridge and finally, once down on Crissy Field the search for a coffee place that was closed and then further ahead, a Starbucks that was open. Having had nothing to eat since breakfast, combined with a few days of getting back on the proper eating plan plus not enough riding in the past 6 months resulted in my legs feeling completely empty by the time we finished the ride. A good soy latte and a chicken sandwich restored me and tasted like glory. Ray's company and guiding was nothing short of wonderful and to me, the first of many wonderful rides that I'll be asking him to take me along. On our way back after crossing the Golden Gate we saw the only other Rivendell bike that we'd see all day, and as luck would have it, the owner ran into us again as we were walking from the Starbucks to find a bench to sit down and eat on the Marina. Words and salutations were exchanged, mutual admiration comments on our bikes (he was riding a beautiful orange Sam) and he and Ray exchanged contact info since both live in the city and Ray has seen him before. For me, the most incredible thing was how incredible the spirit of both Ray and this other rider who is in his 70s is. As a younger man in my early 50s, it's awesome to see how these men contradict the traditional image I grew up with that as we got older we were just not supposed to be doing these things

Thanks, Jason. That's the best side-by-side comparison I've seen of the Quickbeam vs the SimpleOne. For my part, the tangible differences are a wash. [RBW] Re: Fenders/Tires for Rom
Trying this again because my earlier post didn't seem to go through, or something... I too am running GB Cypres on my Rom with VO fenders and it's working great; highly recommended. But I'm not sure why Esteban says that the Rom should be ridden as the classic road bike that it is. His points about other models from the time doing country bike, big clearance duty makes sense, and frankly I would love to throw down for an AHH and not fiddle with fitting bigger tires on the Rom. But if you look at the geometries of those two bikes, not to mention the certain similarities in the original literature about them being versatile road-ish bikes (or maybe it's not a Riv if it can't be described thus), the two don't seem so different, clearance aside. Am I wrong there? Not to diminish the centrality of clearance in everyone's thinking here, but if the difference is between a 35 on the AHH and a 32 on the Rom, does that warrant a new bike? Or, to reverse the question, what about the AHH makes it less of a brevet bike than the Rom aside from the fact that it *can* run bigger tires? Re: [RBW] Re: Indian bike names
There are a couple of Northern MN tribes that may qualify good naming. While Fond Du Lac may be more steel friendly in that they are in the iron range county of Cloquet near Duluth, I prefer the Bois Forte name for its translation as strong wood. Seems to fit the steel/leather product motif. http://www.indianaffairs.state.mn.us/tribes_fonddulac.html http://www.indianaffairs.state.mn.us/tribes_boisforte.html These pages also have great inspiration for headbadgery!
