Re: [RBW] Ergon pedals

2012-06-27 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I haven't put them on my Riv, but I've had them on my Bike Friday NWT for
about a year including an Oregon coast tour this past Spring. I like em.
They are nice and big and quite comfortable for me (size 12 shoes). I don't
slip off them much, better than most pedals.

I use Grip Kings on a couple of other bikes and like them too.

I'd buy another set for an appropriate bike.

Aloha,

[RBW] Help! Convince me to buy (or not buy) this Atlantis!

2012-06-27 Thread The Cripler
Ok. So here is the situation. I have been looking for an Atlantis for a
while. Well I guess looking isn't the right word. Perhaps "dreaming" is a
more appropriate descriptor. To be honest, I haven't really thought that an
Atlantis was going to be in my price range at the current moment. Not
without selling off a few of the bike I have, and as my wife has learned,
selling off bikes isn't a strong point of mine. Anyway, now out of the blue
I have stumbled upon an opportunity to purchase a complete Altantis
forwait for it.$1000. Here are the specs:

Nitto Technomic Stem
Nitto Noodle handlebars with new tape
Front rim: Bontrager 36 spokes
Rear rim: Velocity Synergy 36 spokes
Hubs: Phil Wood hubs
Tires: Schwalbe Marathon Plus (basically new)
Sugino XD crankset
Phil Wood BB
Rear derailleur: Shimano Deore XT
Shimano Cantis (couldnt tell what model)
Saddle: Brooks premium leather
SKS fenders

It seems like an amazing price. I have met the guy, he seems like a totally
straight up person. Now here is the dilemma. First, the frame is a 58. I
have a Surly LHT (which of course I'd sell...maybe) which is a 56cm. Fits
me great. My PBH is 83.84, but lets call it 84. According to the sizing
charts I've seen Rivendell would put me on a 56-58cm frame. But, this just
seems big to me. I know this has been discussed countless time before, but
I am really concerned that a 58 would be too big for me to ride
comfortably. I took the bike on a test ride, and with the current stem and
setup it definitely felt too large. But, I did have a fistful post showing
with my legs extended - albeit barely. The other main issue with the bike
is that both of the rear rack braze-ons have broken off. As the seller
described it, one of the braze-ons was broken off when he purchased the
bike, and the other broke off due to the undue stress on a cross country
trip. I looked at the damage and it really doesn't seem to be an issue, or
to be that diffucult to fix. I have a frame builder in town who would be
able to make short work of it...although I'm not sure what it would cost.
Finally, the paint has some wear. There are several chips. It actually
looks way better than I thought it would considering the price. But, it
does have "character". So given what I have laid out...am I an idiot for
having second thoughts about jumping on this? If the bike didn't, do you
think i would be able to get my money back if I had to sell it? Help a
confused brother out here. Thanks All!

[RBW] Re: Noodles or Albas

2012-06-27 Thread 3wheelin
i used noodles for about a year on my Hilsen...you are right, they
were nice, but not quite "there'. I changed to Alba's about a month
ago...Things were different. I realized i was going slower, but in a
good way. I was stopping more and enjoying my ride better. I feel
comfortable and very "English", sitting up so high. You can grab the
alba's near the stem and feel forward in the wind...I probably wont go
back to the noodles, but then again...never say never...As far as
traffic, you will be more confident, and the view is terrific...Good
luck on the switch..

[RBW] A nine day ride around

2012-06-27 Thread Way Rebb
Hello,

I took a little vacation last week. Spent nine days hike'n and bike'n
the California State Parks, meandering my way from Livermore down to
Big Sur and back up the coast.

The first day was rough: Livermore to Santa Cruz. Blazingly hot by
the time I hit the hills outside of Los Gatos, fifty miles into the
ride (about 70 total). Traffic on Old Santa Cruz Hwy was heavy
because Hwy 17 was stopped. I traveled most of the hills pushing the
bike to keep away from the RVs. Almost ran out of water but a
fireman at a fire station let me fill my bottles at the outside faucet
and finally hit that great cooling descent down Soquel San Jose Road
about twelve hours after I started. Whew, I was beat but I made it.

The days after that were great. Miles of bike paths toward Monterey,
zippy traffic on highway 1 around Moss Landing, back roads through
quiet strawberry fields outside of Watsonville; tough climbs and fast
descents in the hills approaching Big Sur; ferocious headwinds,
sidewinds, tailwinds; several why am I doing this moments but many
more I gotta do this again moments and on and on.

I was planning to go further south, maybe to Santa Barbara or
somewhere, but when I found out they allowed two nights of bike
camping at Big Sur I stayed and enjoyed the park. Pushed backed up the
coast with overnights at New Brighton, Half Moon Bay and, during the
trek around Devils Slide via the mystery road, I thought why stop now,
China Camp is just up the road! Maybe I can get in one more night of
camping. Quite an adventure to find China Camp since I'd never been
there. Beautiful park!

Maybe it is to early in the touring season but I didn't see may others
out on the roads. I was the only one at New Brighton. I did see a mint
'83 Specialized Expedition loaded for a trip across the country. He
bought the bike from a neighbor who bought it new but never used it.
I told him the bike waited all these years for him to take it on a
trip.

Hillborne handled the ride perfectly and I really got to know my
little chainring. I knew it was there never understood how useful it
was, big gear too…anyway…here are a few pictures.

Ray

[RBW] Re: Noodles or Albas

2012-06-27 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
Hi Jay,

I believe you saw my related thread a few day back. A couple thoughts that
might be worth while for you...

My Noodles were on a 7cm stem and Albas are on a 12cm stem. I probably
could have gone with a 10 or 11 and been fine. Not that the 12 is too long
but I definitely don't want it longer. My intent was to sit more upright
for city riding in traffic and what not. With the 12 I have the stem a
couple cm above the saddle. With a shorter stem I'd probably be level with
the saddle. If you already have the 10cm give it a try.

As far as width... I've always ridden wide/upright bars. The 48cm Noodles
felt narrow to me. When I've tried narrower road bars they feel way too
narrow... like I may as well be holding the stem. I appreciate being back
on a bar that feels "normal". As far as width in traffic... I ride
defensively in traffic so don't even consider going places that are too
narrow for my bars. If you like to split lanes and squeeze between cars
downtown, Albas probably are not your bar. I prefer the slower + more
deliberate handling of the Alba over the Noodle.

Albas have 2 solid and unique hand positions and several variations in
between. I don't feel like I'm wanting for hand positions on Albas.

Alum vs Cromo... I have both and don't notice any real difference. Perhaps
if you want to put magnets on your bars it'll matter.

Unfortunately this is the kind of thing that you'll only really know if it
works for you if you try it.

My wife recently declared that she wants Albas on her commuter (an aluminum
Kona hybrid that's slowly being Riv-ized), so even though I had a "spare"
Alba bar laying on my bench for half a day, I ended up ordering another one.

Good luck.

Beastmonster kickstand was my first suspicion wrt to the feet
conundrum. Glad the ridiculously sturdy built-in workstand aspect of
Rivendell bikes (including the two I own) was included in the art.

[RBW] BLUG: radio interview

2012-06-27 Thread Leslie
This morning, awaiting my carpool partner, I was hit the BLUG page, and
noticed the update about the radio interview via Boulder.

My office has a no-internet-radio policy (afraid of bandwidth loss); but I
followed the link from the BLUG on my phone, downloaded the app, and set a
reminder on my calendar.

At 10:30 (east-coast time), I fired up the app and found the station. I
have a 'real' radio on my office's window sill (a small SW radio), that I
have an extra set of computer speakers plugged into; I cut that radio off,
plugged the jack into my phone, and got to listen to Grant's interview
while I worked...

I thought it was a good interview, very much along the Just Ride subjects,
of course. The interviewer was talking about compromises, Grant was
saying the nice thing about Riv was he didn't have to, but that's when the
interviewer started to focus on weight (as if fenders would be too much
weight), so Grant knocked it out of the park on 'engine weight' and
'justifiable' weight (return on investment on a touch of weight gain to
make it SO much more usable).

Well said, Grant...

[RBW] Re: nice kids' bikes

2012-06-27 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I'd've considered the Rambler if I'd stumbled across it. I don't know that
I'd've gone for it; it is pricier than the one we bought and basically
looks like an identical frame.

Unfortunately, what I want is for RBW to sell an Hillborne or AHH in my
son's size with Roadeo tubing in my son's size and sell the frameset for
$500. Okay, maybe $600. I might even go for a proper-sized Soma San Marco,
though I'd prefer that it handle wider tires with fenders. Again, with the
$500-$600

And I completely understand why that will not happen.

[RBW] Re: Noodles or Albas - 2nd try

2012-06-27 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Hi!
Whether the Albatross is right for you depends on how you normally ride now
(drops/tops/hooks/hoods/behind-the-levers) and what you'd like to change
(hand-orientation/lean/reach).

Personally I greatly appreciate a *very* upright riding position. My hands
rest inches above the level of my saddle. I also like a relatively rearward
saddle position. My B-17 is almost as far back as it can go on a normal
Nitto seatpost on my Hillborne. So obviously I can endorse the Albatross.
Pure comfort!

(The consideration is over. Though it was close, I like the Albatross bar
better than the Bosco. I still have an Albatross on one bike and the Bosco
on the other, though. I enjoy both a lot. I'm just not trying to discern
which I like "better" anymore.)

I'd recommend that *if* you want to keep your lean as it is and are
concerned about the bar being too wide, consider a Moustache. You could
probably keep your current brake levers. You can get a different hand
orientation and still have two solid and different positions. With the
Moustache, unless you explicitly want to extend your reach to the closest
part of the bar, I'd start with your 8cm stem.

*But* if you want to experiment more generally with a different riding
position (and outlook on life!) then by all means the Albatross is a great
way to go. Head/Tailwinds will affect you more (slightly adversely overall,
IME). And I do *feel* like I have more power when I ride with my Moustache
set-up versus my Albatross set-up. Of these constrasts think not "true" and
"scientific" and "rigorous" but "truthy" and "scientistical" and "squishy".
But the height and width gain and the closer position of the grips gives me
an upright position I typically prefer.

The 9cm width difference (46 vs 55) might make a practical difference in
tight situations. I have almost no experience in traffic. Frankly *my*
width is probably the critical path there anyway. But when it comes to
getting my bike out of its hidey-hole in the garage, the difficulty is 100%
positively correlated with bar width!

I have one CrMo Albatross and one Al Albatross (heat-treated). I can't tell
a difference in flex. I'm not entirely sure what the widths are, though. It
might be that the Al is 54cm and CrMo is either 55cm or 56cm. I doubt width
would make a big difference in flex here, though; the curve of the
Albatross probably stiffens the structure generally. The Al Albatross has a
little duller waxy-ish finish, which I kind of prefer over the CrMo's
slight shine.

IMO:

The First Thing to confirm is that your saddle is in The Good Place. If it
is not, changing your bar alone will not make you as comortable as you
should be. I ride periodically with Albatross, Bullmoose, Moustache,
Noodle, and Bosco bars on a Hillborne. I *never* change my saddle position.
And, though I have overall preferences, I am basically comfortable with any
of those bars. I never have hand-numbness or arm-weariness or lower-back
trouble with any of them on my 10-20mi RT commute or my 30-40mi weekend
rides. It's just like having different bikes, all wonderful.

Good luck!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

Re: [RBW] Torque specs for Rivendell bikes?

2012-06-27 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Some people should not work on their own bikes. This is not an insult, just
something that I've observed over a number of years fixing massive DIY f-ups.
That said, as a mechanical object, the bicycle is quite approachable for an
amateur wrench, so for a person who has the aptitude and inclination and tools,
I say have at it. I believe there are lots of fine bike mechanics in any
large-ish city. There are also lots of shops that employ inexperienced
mechanics in the busy season. It can be a trick to find the mech who's
compatible with our bikes and personalities.

As a parallel to the above: I have learned over the years that I should not do
home improvement/repair projects. MUCH easier and cheaper and faster and better
to find an experienced person to do it for me.

Hello,

I was wondering if Rivendell lugged steel frames and bolts have torque specs?
Or, if the frames could speak, would they say: "We don't need no stinking
specs.
Just tighten it 'til it smokes!"?

Thanks for any info.

'a mechanics hand' can come through experience - or as another option
it could just be a function of strength and guessing. I've noticed
I've gotten better at estimating torque for things I do repeatedly so
that when I go to test with the torque wrench there is very little
movement necessary. However, I like tools which take the 'magical
intuition and guessing' out of the game.

Additionally, I have found that seeking out a good mechanic is next to
impossible. During conversation w/a mechanic and w/o encountering some
sort of failure of some kind from their work - I've found that
distinguishing a good mechanic from a passable mechanic is next to
impossible.

I'd rather learn to do it for myself or get a tool to help me do it
myself than guess as to whether or not the money I just paid someone
was for good, reliable work or was just for the fun of throwing my
money away.

demonstrate proper torque.

I don't know many pro mechanics who use torque wrenches or fret over torque
specs, except on CF stuff. For the most part "mechanic's hand" is just fine. If
you lack mechanic's hand, hopefully you know it by now. A torque wrench may be
a worthwhile investment...or maybe it's more advisable to just find a good
mechanic. A man has to know his limitations.

I've shopped with them in the past, and always had a good experience.
However, if the item I want is available on www.wiggle.co.uk, that's where
I get it since they have free shipping to the United States and their
prices are very competitive.

I shop here primarily for european items I cannot find locally, or for
discontinued items like rear derailers. I was able to get 3 Rapid Rise
Shimano XT derailers that have been discontinued for quite some time now
and were no longer available everywhere I looked.

My primary goal is to support local shops that give me good service.

Maybe they could create a catalog item for "margin of goodwill" or something

Also, I'm having some of my colleagues from work over this weekend, --- I'm a

I'm usually fortunate enough to get to eat lunch with a group of art teachers
(sculpture, pottery, drawing, design), -- it's the lunch group that'll be here.
I'm interested to see what they think of my new "art acquisition".
Having an actual art object to show off will be quite a contrast to most of my

2012-06-27 Thread Scott Henry
What bolts or specs are you looking for?
The only thing that could possibly come from a frame manufacturer would be
a seat post binder bolt (and thats only for a threaded seat lug). And that
a stretch. All other specs would be from the component manufacturer and
should be on the specific instruction sheet with each part.

[RBW] Re: The Poster

2012-06-27 Thread islaysteve
I second this sentiment and also the suggestion for a "goodwill" item from
which to order. Agree that I would have ordered at a low intro price
whether $20, 23, 25, etc. I'm sure that many others here would have also.
Grant, please consider this. (Still anxiously awaiting poster delivery
tomorrow!) Steve

Re: [RBW] Nitto Max Stem Height Question

2012-06-27 Thread David Hallerman
All text and any min/max insertion line should be in the steerer tube
and not visible.

Typically, a quill stem gives you 65mm to 75mm, measured from the long
part in the back, that needs to be inserted fully into the steerer.

Dave, who still remembers this foolish fellow who had his quill a fair
bit above the minimum insertion mark but insisted that because he never
had a problem with it there was "no problem"

Hey all -

I was looking at my nitto stem, and am not sure where the "max stem
height" line actually is. Is it the words "max stem height"? and
does that mean that those words must be down into the steerer tube
(effectively making the top of that line of text the line)?

Help?

Hey Ryan:

You're right about non-cyclists, but that road isn't too good. I've ridden
it a couple times with my son on bike camping trips, when he was 10 and 11.
He's a very experienced cyclist for his age, but that road was probably the
second or third worst part of the trip (which went from Tacoma to
Manchester, then Northwest to Port Townsend, and onwards..actually, IIRC,
the easternmost part of that road was pretty nice, but it wasn't so good as
it got closer to the passenger ferry. The passenger ferry, however, is
really nice) What about approaching Manchester (which is great) via
Southworth ferry? I assume your son will be in a trailer, or on a
trail-a-bike? When I think about it, I guess the road you show is ok for
that purpose, since you're doing the steering. I never felt in danger, even
with my son. It was just a little trafficky. The part which cuts over to
Manchester is pretty nice and there are, strangely, some camels in the
middle of a field just north of Manchester?!

Have fun
