Ah, I don't think it would take $20,000,000 to bring a bike to
market. I suspect that manufacturers in Taiwan are much more nimble
than that, and I suspect that parts manufacturers will be happy to
make sales.

Let's say Riv is shooting for a 35% margin, which would be very solid
in the bike world. That's a cost of $910 each. How many would they
do in a first run? A hundred? Two hundred? I have no idea how many
units Rivendell can sell of a new, entry-level model, but let's say
two hundred, which might be enough to realize some production
efficiencies. That represents a cost of $182,000. Not an
insignificant amount of money, but not anywhere near $20,000,000. As
far as ensuring that it's a "good seller" -- that might mean appealing
to a somewhat mainstream audience, which would be a bit of a switch in
posture and in marketing strategy.

Riv has had historic alliances with Merry Sales (if I recall correctly
-- weren't they the folks who distributed the Bleriot? Or was it
QBP?), as well as with Soma. Any of those could be very helpful in
lining up suppliers and supplies.

[RBW] Re: The New Riv

2012-07-03 Thread Tony Lockhart
I think you're close Peter. Soma's Stanyan comes in around the $700 mark
and they're using Tange. Velo-Orange also has a lugged frame retailing
around $700, although they've been on sale forever. The recent post
mentions tubing that's not as nice as other bikes so I imagine there's some
wiggle room to get the price down. I'm not familiar with the intricacies of
all the different types of tubing, but I imagine that they'll go for
something a bit lower than the 4130 stuff.

Budget wheels cost a couple hundred; Kalloy makes economic parts; faux
leather saddle; Microshift drivetrain parts; and who knows.maybe they
get some of the tires/handlebars/incidentals from Soma. I think they can
definitely pull this off. The SimpleOnes didn't have any super exciting
parts, however they all managed to work together in a grouppo that made the
bike affordable. I really think they can do it, and I imagine it'll be much
better than the racy stuff coming out of Trek, Cannondale, and Specialized.

Also another cool thing. Didn't know if I should have posted this up on

Funny thing about how I found out. I tried tricking him (because thats the
only way I can convince people to ride with me) into riding me up South

Riv and Soma have a relationship. Soma makes pretty nice lugged
frames, with a retail price point of $730. The Soma frames are made

When I am out on a ride longer than say 25 miles I will sometimes wear my
one pair of cycling shorts but..I also have been known to ride in plain
cotton undies (boxers) and Riv MUSA shorts now that I have the Riv blue
suspenders. I have both short and long sleeve wool shirts and also have Riv
MUSA pants for colder days. I also have the wool 'tights' that I use under
my rain paints when its really crummy out. Showers Pass touring
jacket.Sunny days, just a cotton t-shirt or a long sleeve cotton button
up with chest pockets for my phone etc. Shoes, New
Balance outdoors-man sport shoe (not sure what model) but they are brown
suede. I've always wanted to ride the STP.and if I do, it would
probably be my other brand touring bike or my new Rivendell Sam Hillborne
with a change to drop bars. Might consider riding the SimpleOne someday
with a gearing change and if the weather were ideal and I was in better
shape for it. I'm liking the long tail cotton long sleeve shirt (seersucker
if you can) for riding the more I use them. I also use my Teva sandals in
the summer for riding. Heat/cold management is pretty important so layering
and a good bag/rack combo is really nice to have.

So the Seattle to Portland ride is coming up (200 miles in 2 days), and I'm

[RBW] Swap my 55cm LongLow for your 53cm Atlantis: Last Call

I'm putting it out there one more time.
I will swap my 55cm square LongLow (built in 1999 by Joe Starck) for yur 53cm
Atlantis.I would prefer to swap the framesetsbut would consider a complete bike
swap if it makes sense for both of us.
beausage abounds on my frame -- it has the original paint and hass seen about
2,000 miles a year or so since 1999 -- so I won't have beausage issues with
yours.
If no one bites I will clean it up and sell it locally.

[RBW] Re: The New Riv

2012-07-03 Thread dougP
Agree with Joe on the minimalist detail approach; keep it low
profile. Using generic, non-group parts, it could be done. You just
ride it for a while & after a year upgrade whatever is tired. Wheels
will of necessity be machine built, no label hoops. We'll probably
see very simple lugs, as on the last of the Japanese bikes. Still,
$1,400 is a helluva price point. I imagine REI, Surly, etc. place
humungous orders to keep the price down. Time will tell.

Mine showed up today. Yeah, it is better than shown on the interweb.
Wasn't sure I'd like it when the first version showed up. But, it's very
good. For some reason, looks like "California" to this person from
fly-over land. It's now in a Target frame on the living room wall. For
anyone who cares, an 18x24 frame works swell. Had to take down the
Rivendell bike model poster to make room.

[RBW] Re: Tubus Cosmo and ~64cm Frame size?

2012-07-03 Thread Leslie
I've got a pair of Cosmos on my 56 Bombadil (650b w/2.3 and SKS
fenders)... works great (front was a trick to mount, but the rear was
easy).

Thing is, is shouldn't matter if it's a 56 or a 60 or a 64; the wheelsize
is going to be the same (my fat 650b is as tall as my 60 Ram wearing 700c
32's...); yes, your seat tube will lengthen, as will the top tube, bottom
tube, forks; but the braze-ons should be at the same distance above the
axles, regardless of the size..

I think you'll be fine.

FWIW, I like my Cosmos...

The email as linked from Rivendell's Twitter. The frame will be made in
Taiwan, "minimalist paint", no headbadge, and I guess the downtube/seattube
decals will be minimalist as well. I like the idea of a "beater Rivendell"
a lot..something simple and understated from the company of fancy
paint-and-lugs is a neat idea. I say paint it Mark's Grey - like the
Hunqapillar but without the red/white - and put a creme RBW triangle on the
seattube, the name of the bike on the headtube, and leave the downtube
bare. Urban Commuter Stealth Rivendell.

Intriguing, a build kit for a Riv is $1,200 so not sure how it would be
possible to do a whole bike for $1,400 made out of lugged steel unless the
are having 1k frames made in China or something like that.

Re: [RBW] Re: DT shifter issues

2012-07-03 Thread Bertin753
I can't advise about the slipping FD except to conjecture that something is
keeping the bolt from tightening as it should. But as to the rear, I expect
that it is a matter of learning shifting finesse. I have only 7 on the rear,
but they are separated by 9 sp spacers (because that is what I had) and the
silver bes shifts them fine. The trick is not anticipate the Hyperglide
feature: move the lever just that tiny bit that experience teaches you is
required by the gap, and let the ramps, etc., do their work. That took me a
while to learn.

[RBW] Bringing Brian to RBW

2012-07-03 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
As I'd mentioned, Brian the Bike Locally Challenger (info here -
http://bikelocally.wordpress.com/category/2012-challenge-winner/brian-jones
and here - http://www.marinbike.org/Campaigns/BikeLocally/Challenge.shtml )
has some unique challenges when it comes to fitting him on a bike. I'd had
some stuff to pick up at RBW, so offered to take him over to be measured,
fitted and shown what kinds of useful bikes can be fitted to him. He got
the "stump treatment" and Keven pulled the tape out to 102 cm, which puts
him into the range of 71 Hilsen or 68 Hunqua/Hillborne sized frames.

Took some photos, but I'll admit I was playing around on a variety of
frames myself. Once again grateful to Keven who was superb at talking
about differences and preconceptions of fit, position and use. Gave Brian
a lot to think about. Huge thanks to the gang at RBW (and the poster is
pretty danged stunning...).

some photos - only of bikes.

No. Sorry for the confusion. I was just excited about your bike joy. My own Atlantis is 64 cm, so a 56 cm LHT would never work.

Incidentally, I repainted my Atlantis red for its 10-year anniversery a year ago, and at that time, I added the midfork and midstay braze-ons for mini-racks.

Have fun riding!

[RBW] Slat Grill is poifect for the well-equipped, food-loving S24O

Hi friends,

I know there's been some previous discussion of not posting shameless
promotions; however, I really think the Slat Grill is a Rivish item that
you might not ever be aware of otherwise. It's a really simple portable
camping grill perfect for a groovy S24O. I have no vested interest in the
product other than I have one. It's incredibly versitle and couldn't be
more simple. AND you can cook some really cool stuff on it. Plus it's made
right here in Roseville, MN and the guy who designed it loves to eat great
food. He cooked me a grilled pear with gorganzola cheese and honey that
was out of this world. AND it fits in a Baggins Adam.

Okay. 'nough said.

Re: [RBW] Re: Review of "Just Ride."

2012-07-03 Thread Cyclofiend

On Jul 2, 2012, at 2:23 PM, Garth wrote:
Steve, My hypothesis is for each of us, if we wish, to look at our
own prejudices towards a material we may actually know nothing
about ! Just becasue so and so says it was this or that . It may be
true for them... but is it true for me ? And if your favourite
frame could be 5 pounds lighter for the same price would you
still choose your heavier one ? .. after all ... weight doesn't
matter... right ? lol :)

There are a couple of things to consider.

First, if you make the frame and fork out of CF, I think you would be
hard pressed to remove 5 pounds vs a modern steel frame. There just
isn't that much difference. To remove 5 or 10 pounds from a bicycle
setup means you have to pursue minimizing weight in componentry as well.

Second, from working in the bicycle industry and the fishing/outdoor
industry for a while, I've seen many, many, many Carbon Fiber failures
- a number of which I've experienced firsthand. The issue is - and
always will be - the nature of the way CF fails. In my direct
experience, it fails catastrophically and with no warning. It
folds. It splits. It severs. It cracks.(And Aluminum tends to
fail in a similar fashion, though in my experience it at least gives
more warning if you actively look for surface cracks.) Once it takes
a direct impact, you no longer trust it.

Way back in pre-history. A Person Who Knows told me that the best
bike is the one that gets you home. (It wasn't GP, by the way). I've
kept that nugget in the back of my brain since then. Even when I was
getting transfixed by lighter and lighter bits, that kept getting more
and more fiddly and idiosyncratic. When I realized I was spending
more time coaxing my bikes to work than riding them, I started to
reassess the idea of weight meaning everything.

My bikes (well, all but my old soft-nose mtb which I don't really ride
that much) are steel because it is the best material for me, the way I
ride and my piece of mind when I'm rolling down the mountain at
speed.Yeah, there are places you can focus on to sensibly remove
excess weight, but the times that really matters (as has been pretty
well documented) are pretty much when the road points upward.

Re: [RBW] Re: Review of "Just Ride."

2012-07-03 Thread Peter Morgano
I have read the book too and dont take it as describing that CF fails more
often, its just that when it does it is catastrophic and sometimes deadly.
Steel, Aluminum and Titanium all fail too but its just that when they do it
is somewhat predicatable and less sudden, giving the rider time to
compensate or dismount the bike before something dangerous happens. Also
to Grant's point steel can be fixed if it fails while CF cannot. As i
mentioned earlier I rode a "vintage" LOOK KG96 for a long time and had no
issues but if there was an issue I would not have seen it until the bike
collapsed under me, different from my old Peugot which developed a small
then increasingly larger crack around the BB to let me know it was time to
hang it up.

Re: [RBW] Re: Review of "Just Ride."

2012-07-03 Thread blueride2
I think CF bikes have their place in the world of cycling, and I certainly
subscribe to "live and let live" as it applies to cycling. It should be
"ride and let ride". The point is ride what you have, and try to have a
good time doing it.Who can deny that riding in a pace-line at 20+ mph isn't
a hoot? Not me, that's for sure. A good lightweight CF bike makes this a
lot easier, than say a 26 pound steel bike. No, what is upsetting is the
near total dominance of CF bikes in the market today. If riders could own
just one bike, most of us, would be better served on a steel bike. More
versatile for sure.

I'm in the middle of "Just Ride" and find it a very enjoyable and
interesting read. I do think Grant's off-base somewhat on the durability of
CF frames. Having owned several CF bikes over a 10 year span, I haven't had
a lick of trouble with any of them. No exploding or cracked frames, I even
crashed one of them. Look at the millions of CF forks out there. If there
was an issue with these forks self-destructing, the liability issue would
quickly drive manufacturers out-of-business. Face it, CF bikes are here to
stay.
A well designed CF frame will last a long time. Hell, at times, I even ride
CF wheels. Oh, the horror of it all!

Having said that, I love steel bikes too. The ride quality just can't be
beat, except maybe for Ti bikes, but I've never ridden nor owned one so I
can't comment.

[RBW] Re: My favorite bike invention!

My favorite from the last 35 years? LED lights and good rechargeable
batteries. That combo has made more of a change to my own riding than any
other "thing" I can think of in that time.

I've discovered or tried out some good things in that time that are new to
me, but the lighting change is what I like that's new to everybody.

BUT!

For site issues and anything specific to the operation or

Time/Date specifics as to when and how those anomalies were occurring.

[RBW] Re: DT shifter issues

2012-07-03 Thread Eric Peterson
I installed the Silvers on my Velo Orange rando bike and have been very
unhappy with their performance. There are two basic problems.

First, I experienced phantom shifting of the FD. The shifter cannot hold
the FD in place in the middle ring (on a Sugino triple). Instead, after a
short time, it will drop to the inner ring. This occurred over and over on
my recent 400K brevet and I was NOT happy, as I was always going up a hill
at the time. I am using a modern DA FD, so perhaps the spring tension is
too high for the shifter. But it is the FD that I have available. If there
are any specific models of older FDs that would alleviate this condition,
please send along this information, along with any suggestions for sources.

The other problem is just as bad. The shifter will not shift a 9-speed
Shimano cassette very effectively. You think you have nailed it, then the
chain jumps one way or the other. It's like the micro-clicks simply cannot
position the chain close enough to the center of the cassette for some
gears. So there was a lot of chain hopping going on back there. After a
while I just stopped shifting sometimes and just stood on the pedals.

Bottom line, I will remove these and go back to Shimano. 9-speed BES have
worked well for me in the past, but I did not want to route the cables
along the handlebar in order to avoid the front bag I am using, so I
initially tried DA 9-speed DT shifters, but the rear one felt a little
loose, and lined up funny with the left one (so I thought), but now I have
little choice but to go with one of these or the other.

Another option would be to go back to a 7/8 speed cassette, perhaps the
Silvers work well with those. But there is still the FD problem

[RBW] Tubus Cosmo and ~64cm Frame size?

2012-07-03 Thread HKett
Hi everyone, I have a 64cm Atlantis and right now I have a standard
blackburn rack on it that is too small to get level and as thus presses
against my fenders and causes rubbing. So I've decided to get a new rack,
and the Tubus Cosmo looks perfect for what I want. I've placed a backorder
at the local bike shop, but they won't get stock for a few weeks, so before
I wait a while, get it, and realize it doesn't fit, does anyone have
experience with the Cosmo and a ~64cm frame, Atlantis or similar?

Thanks in advance!

Beautiful; I remember the Ca countryside and I wish we had more riding
like that around here.

So ... you pedal a pedicab? Job? Second job? Hobby?

It was lack of cash that made me sell my Ken Rogers, and though I
thoroughly enjoyed riding it, I must say that, after all is said and
done, riding a trike is not nearly as nice as riding a bike. I suppose
I am a dyed-in-the-wool two-wheeler.

Further along in that photo series there is P7020570: my GAWD! Does
someone really ride that thing as shown?? P7020572 seems much more
reasonable.

I just thought of another one...v-brakes. I love them, they work really

[RBW] Re: The Poster--What to do now that you have it

2012-07-03 Thread islaysteve
Given the prices some here are posting, I might have to order the supplies
and do it myself. I have an idea of the type of frame I want, so as to
compliment the style and period look of the poster. I will probably take
it to the framer that I've used before for an estimate. Cheers everyone,
Steve

[RBW] Re: The Poster

2012-07-03 Thread islaysteve
Thanks for sharing this Zack. I was wondering what DLG would write about
this poster, having read his other writings on the poster site. His
reference to the Sacramento Bee is cool, since I grew up reading (no
delivering) that paper.I have my poster now and can say that no
computer image can do it justice. No one who orders one should be
disappointed. Steve

Re: [RBW] Re: Review of "Just Ride."

2012-07-03 Thread Joe Bernard
I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet. Lugs. You can try to spec a
CF frame to duplicate a Rivendell all you want, but you're still not gonna
get pretty lugs and contrasting creme panels. No CF for me..I'd miss the
lugs, and I don't trust that thin plastic. I watch a lot of Formula One
auto racing, and I've seen a lot of CF cars wreck: that stuff snaps into
lethal shards. Nuh uh.
