I've also mounted a set of C lines. On Dyads they mounted easily, straight and true and measure 37mm at 65#. I have about 40 miles on them so far and I must say they are quite comfortable and do well at smoothing out our chronically winter damaged roads here in central NY. The fender line is a bit tight under the VO fenders I am running on the Hilsen but there still is a bit of room still for some fiddling. First, they mounted easily without tools or talc on the Mavic A-719 rims on my Atlantis, and were straight true. At 60 psi, they measure 37 mm actual width, immediately after mounting, so I expect them to grow to their spec'd 38 mm with some time at pressure. Nothing left to do except wheel out the door give 'em a try. What a difference in ride quality from what I've grown accustomed to! These really are nice riding tires. A short spin of about 20 miles is all I had time for but plenty of railroad tracks crappy pavement showed them to be quite comfortable. The lighter weight (claimed 400 grams) means they accelerate away from stops climb hills noticeably better. Just all around a more fun ride! [RBW] Velocity Rims, Again
The Hetere / Velocity thread seems to have veered toward a discussion of handling, so I decided to start over with a slightly different question. I ride the Synergy rim with Pari-Moto tires. It is true that they mount pretty loosely and it is hard to get them perfectly centered but I have gotten them good enough and have no problem with the ride or security. However, I just noticed, in the last issue of BQ, that Velocity is now offering, through Boulder cycles, a new rim, the A23, which they describe as shallower, stronger, and shinier (!). Re: [RBW] Re: Hetre/Synergy safety issue?
It's interesting that you bring up tandems. Tandems do have their own requirements – they should not react much to weight shifts, since the captain cannot anticipate when the stoker reaches for a water bottle or scratches their nose – but the best tandems are as nimble at speed as a good single bike. (At very low speeds, you do notice the long wheel base, because the turning radius is larger.) Here, too, front-end geometry is more a determinant of handling than wheelbase. It would be interesting to ride a René Herse Chanteloup tandem with a curved rear seat tube and ultra-short wheelbase back to back with a standard tandem from the same maker with the same front-end geometry, but significantly longer wheelbase... I have ridden both, and both are excellent, but never back-to-back to make direct comparisons. The LHT does have LONG chainstays... Most touring bikes I have measured were classic machines that had shorter chainstays than that. My old Mercian tourer had a wheelbase of 1028 mm. Of course, the main determinant of wheelbase is top tube length - a large frame will have a longer wheelbase. I should have said that I was referring to bikes that fit a 6' tall rider like me - otherwise, the wheelbase measurement becomes meaningless. Mainly the longer chainstays are intended to allow the use of larger/lower panniers with less chance of your heels hitting them. I think that a lot of people equate that with a slower handling bike, perhaps not recognizing that the steering geometry of a loaded tourer tends to be different than a road bike, 'cross bike or mountain bike. If you want the comparison in extremis regarding wheelbase consider a tandem or a triplet (although there the front end geometry tends to be different). -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Hetre/Synergy safety issue?
I have run into one specific tire with a bead problem, and that is the Challenge Strada clincher (open tubular). On my daughter's Kinlin rims, I can't run the pressure up to 90 psi, but that is not a problem, since she can ride at 75. On my Campy (Omega) Moskva rims, this tire will not bite, period, and I blew out a couple of tubes before I reached 75 psi. No such problem with the Vittoria Corsa 25mm, which seats perfectly and will take unneeded high pressure. The larger Challenge Parigi works OK in the rear. [RBW] Velocity Rims, Again
the a23 extrusion has been out there for a long time in 700. anthony at longleaf bicycles in new england was the first to pony up the money for a run of 650b a23 rims. they work great, and like all tubeless ready rims, tires fit great on them. the 'new' part with boulder is they are now offering the a23 off-center in 650b, in addition to the regular extrusion for fronts. they also had them polished. its a very good rim. i ran the symmetric ones from longleaf the possible negatives of the a23 extrusion in my mind are: 1. the brake track is not very tall, not as tall as the p23 or 2. the brake track sidewalls are not parallel. they have a slight v shape, ideal for centerpulls and caliper brakes, sub optimal for cantilevers, 3. a modernish look, not as classic as a boxier section -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I usually use black, because that is the color most easily found when you buy housing by the foot. I'd prefer grey with some colors -- was going to use grey (gray, graie, greh, gre', what have you) on the Ram but the provider of the grey provided derailleur cable and not brake housing, so it was back to black. I've been using a brush for years and years. Since I was a teenager, I think. I got two brushes at a garage sale - one is stiff and terrible, and flips soap at the mirror while making a latherless mess. The other is soft and fantastic, creating lots of bubbly shaving foam with very little work. I've used it daily (mostly) since I got it, and it looks and works exactly the same as it ever did. I have a shaving mug, which is just like a regular mug, but with little nubs in the bottom to hold the soap, and I just throw all our old soap slivers in. They lather up beautifully, and if you're showering with soap you like, you'll like the soap you shave with. Every year or two I scrape the mug out and start semi-fresh. Re: Topics later in the thread. The blades I use are Gillette Mach 3(? 5?) Three I think. The older ones that go for weeks. They aren't cheap, but I don't find I buy them very often, either. I used to cut my own hair until about 5 years ago when my vintage clippers died and the new ones I got were just TERRIBLE. Now I just go to the barber, and they do a better job than I could. Open combs like that nice Merkur are nice razors. They shave nice and close, and don't clog so easily when one hasn't shaved for several days. For Patrick and others, shaving is a regressive technology (now geared primarily towards marketing advances) and many believe that unless you want to go all the way to a straight edge, that the double-edged razor blade is the next best thing. Great razor blades can still be bought as cheaply as disposables (10 cents to 50 cents a blade that will last for perhaps 5 to 10 or more shaves), and the razors themselves (essentially blade holders) from the 1910s to 1970s that one finds in antique stores and thrift stores can be as good or better than those made today. My two favorite razors are a refurbished Gillette open comb at least 50 years old, and a Merkur Slant razor I bought in an antique shop in Luling Texas. I think it was made in Germany in the 1930s. As for blades, each brand is slightly different: some too sharp, some too dull, some quite stiff, some flexible... I like 7 o'clock most of the time, but go for the Kai or Feather if I really want to...carefully... shave really closely. Re: [RBW] Saddlebags vs Revelate bags
Revelate and Rivendell are two ENTIRELY different schools of thought, each having their own merits. I own three Revelate bags and sold a fourth (frame bag): Viscacha (awful name), Gas Tank and Mountain feed bag. All three get swapped back and forth between my mountain bike, fat (snow) bike and gravel bike (Fargo), non of which have a rack. Pros: lightweight; needs no rack; fast and easy to swap between bikes; affordable. Cons: Viscacha is kinda ugly, if that matters. I also own a Hilsen (for sale!) with Rivendell's medium saddlesack. Like the Viscacha, the medium saddlesack swallows everything that I throw into it with room for more. Big Riv saddlesacks weigh considerably more and require a rack if you can't stand the constant thigh rubbing like me. They are beautiful though and that can trump other factors for most. Pros: classic beauty; highest durability (?); best resale value. Cons: Expensive; magnet for astute thieves; can't be placed on and off quickly for frequent store visits, if that matters. Ironically, your photo is called The Old but I believe that was a razor that debuted in 1929 and was named The New Here's some fun reading: http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Gillette%20Rasierer.htm Funnily, the razor that preceded The New was The New Improved. The easiest way to distinguish The New from previous models is that it was the first Gillette not to have the two vampire teeth blade centering pins on the underside of the razor. To me, The New was the pinnacle of Gillette technology, better than the very aggressive razors that came before it and better than all the later solid bar (i.e. not open comb) razors of later decades. [RBW] Re: Verboort Sausage Festival Ride Report
Allan, Looks like a grand time! And who wouldn't want to ride to a festival with good food. Nice to a familiar face and some new ones to me. Thanks for the share. Ha! That's funny... wasn't intentional, just old in comparison to my new Merkur!!! :-) 'Nother pic shows it definitely being The New model: http://www.flickr.com/photos/64942209@N00/5150469056 That site is pretty fun, quite the rabbit-hole! [RBW] My first Riv - at long last. with pic.
What stem do you have on the Sam? I am guessing dirt drop, but hard to tell from the picture. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: My first Riv - at long last. with pic.
It's a fine looking Sam, cbone. Happy to hear you are enjoying it with your family. My new (May 24th 2013) just sailed through 2400 miles this weekend and I am really liking it. Meanwhile I have met some wonderful people at an S24O and on this forum. Best regards, Tom On Sunday, November 3, 2013 8:24:38 AM UTC-8, cbone97 wrote: Sharing my happiness. After a few years and as many times of nearly ordering a frame from Riv; I bought a used Sam frame used here on the bunch, slapped on my Nitto rear rack, wide low doubles and grip kings (from previous bike), placed an order with Riv (bar tape, twine, tires, cables, kickstand, thumb shifter, shop sack), and another with (not-Riv) for, ummthe rest including Brooks Aged B17, Tektro cantis, TRP RRL levers, rear derailer (i don't run a front), a Nitto dirt drop quill, and Nitto Rando B132 bars. Wheels are Velocity Dyads; one came with the frame and another from Hiawatha Cyclery (thanks Jim!). I feel a little guilty for not getting a couple of the Rivailable things from not-Riv, but I save a buck where I can to fund Riv-only / Riv-cheap-as-anywhere stuff - like the shop sack (this is a great, great product whether or not you have a bike to put it on!), *Just Ride*, knickers, etc. Grant, please forgive me. I am LOVING this bike. The Sam frame is a comfy dream. It's my first 700c bike and even though the Contis are not skinny, they are to me and I feel like a knife in hot butter compared to any other bike I've ever ridden. The drop bars are another first and I have 'em way up on high where they're comfortable and can't be mistaken for anything like racer-mimicry. I had a local bike shop put on the cables and set the brakes and der. The mechanic called me and asked where I wanted the thumb lever. I hadn't given it that much thought, so I reply near the stem, wherever works. I was surprised to find he mounted the humble SunRace *on* the stem where it minimizes cablery, stays outta my way, and works perfect. Many thanks to this innovative mechanic! What's next? Twining my h'bars, cutting down and bolting on the kickstand, and getting a front rack for my med. Wald basket and Riv Shop Sack. Can't wait! Yesterday was its first day out here in Columbia MO - just an easy spin around Cosmo park with my lovely wife and 2 wonderful sons - which reminded me how blessed I am. If any of you end up in CoMO, give me a holler. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Saddlebags vs Revelate bags
I see some people use a Revelate front sling, and a more traditional saddlebag. Like this guy: http://www.bikepacking.net/individual_setups/niknaks-niner-emd-on-the-gdmbr/ So Revelate and Carradice can co-exist on the same bike. On Sun, Nov 3, 2013 at 7:15 PM, Sean Cleary 1upand1d...@gmail.com wrote: Revelate and Rivendell are two ENTIRELY different schools of thought, each having their own merits. My defolliculaton arsenal includes a Merkur 34C, Personna Red blades (or Feather Hi-Stainless if I'm feeling brave and/or haven't shaved in a bit), Proraso Green soap-in-a-bowl, and some old bristle brush I stole from my father-in-law.
