 the following alt-ride.

Start Ventura out the Ventura river trail to the Ojai Valley bike path
extension through Ojai, 33N to Forest route 5N13 to Matilija Campground 27
miles with obvious climbing. I am told

I figure we can call the ride by Wednesday the 11th if the forecast
looks dismal so there's time to make travel arraingments

Note: I'd like to get an early ride out time for plenty of leisure read
that as photo op's, rest breaks, snacks and because it gets dark early make
camp with some day light left. So how does an 8am start sound? I'll be
driving up since it's only an hour or so drive for me.

I understand if taking off a Friday is difficult for some but then who
really needs to work on a Friday anyways! And for those of you who loads of
free time here's something to do, ride with good people get back to nature
(frosty as it maybe) and in the end have a good meal and some brews at the
Anacapa Brewing Co. in DT Ventura. Sounding better! All right! Let's do it.

not being nearly as savvy a rider as I make myself out to be, I stopped,
phoned in to work and told them I wouldn't be coming in, and spent the next

After realizing that standing on snow for 45 minutes when you have RA

[RBW] Re: Off-road excursion, not intentional

2013-12-22 Thread Michael Hechmer
I find the best strategy is not going into the ditch. I do three things
that consistently help. One, I don't ride close to the edge, not so much
because I fear the edge but because I want to have room to move over when a
careless driver in a truck or big honking SUV passes too close. Second,
whenever I am around road obstacles like broken pavement, glass, or old
mufflers I look where I want the bike to go, not at what I want to avoid.
After a while this becomes instinctual. The third thing is the hardest to
do consistently - pay attention all the time. Captaining a tandem has
helped with this because the captain or pilot needs to tell the stoker what
they are going to do or hit before it happens. And, even though I am
resilient I fear one crash will end my wife's trust and desire to ride with
me.

Keep the rubber side down and the smile side up.

[RBW] Re: Off-road excursion, not intentional

2013-12-22 Thread BSWP
Yes, the most basic rule for bicycling and motorcycling is the same - look
to where you want to go. The flip side of that is that, when you look at
(fixate on) the pothole or ditch or oncoming vehicle, you WILL ride into
it. When I'm riding twisty roads, on either machine, one trick I use when
coming up to a hairpin, especially one I can't see through due to trees or
side of the mountain, is to say to myself expect a truck and then keep my
gaze looking past the apex of the turn. On the few occasions when a car or
truck appears there, I'm not so freaked out by it, and can continue my turn
smoothly.

report and am scanning CL, but I know there are a number of Portlanders on
this list so I thought the more eyes the better. This is a pretty
distinctive bike and I am sure the person who took it (they left a rusty
beater mountain bike in exchange) has no idea what they have.

Here is link to my Flickr set with bike photos:

It is currently decked out in cork tape, SKS fenders not the Honjos,

because of what it is, but because of how I came to have it built. Any
help or good karma is appreciated.

2013-12-22 Thread Michael Hechmer
Last Nov., when in CA, I visited RBW and bad mouthed the rings they sold.
I especially pointed out that on a tandem or on rough roads eventually the
FD will move enough to cause an over shift and without a stud behind the
crank arm it will most likely cause the chain to wrap. They told me about
the new rings coming. They look very nice have the much needed stud,
unfortunately not in sizes I normally use(48/34/26), although a 45/35/25
sounds like a very interesting setup - nice range, close gears, good shift
pattern.

The virtue of the smaller BCD is that you can run very compact doubles in
the outer two positions; 54 down to 26 and, IIRC, 86 down to 26. I use a
XD2 as a 38/24, but I have to run the rings in the middle and innermost
positions -- not that this is a huge hardship, but it would be nice to have
1 BCD for all 3 rings.

My vote, fwiw, is a budget alternative to the Compass Herse cranks, but
with a bit of flare to the arms so that they can accomodate frames that
themselves accommodate 60 mm tires, at least, while keeping Q to a minimum.

That -- small bcd, minimum Q for mtb frames, silver, silver, silver --
is, I think, a real and valuable niche, and I'd love something like it for
 the Fargo.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell SimpleBeam - New Model - Call for the Seriously InterestedB

2013-12-22 Thread Peter Pesce
Agreed Jim. Wouldn't it just be easier to see if there were 30 people willing
to pre-order an actual SO/QB? I know there's no opportunity for creative
expression in that, but it does seem odd to try to satisfy demand for the those
bikes with a new bike that will explicitly NOT be those bikes! I know GP uses
clone in a pejorative sense but to keep making a bike is not cloning it.
Besides, aren't there business side advantages to continuing to sell, though
perhaps on a limited, pre order basis, the bike for which you already amortized
the tooling and development costs?

I have a last gen silver QB and love it. If it were stolen or wrecked I'd
seriously consider paying custom-shop money for a new one. I'm not the least
bit interested in a NewBeam that has the chunky tube set of my Sam, double top
tubes, or wavy gravy curved rear triangle bits. To me that bike would have
nothing in common with a QB beyond the dropouts.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam or Simple One for my needs?

2013-12-22 Thread ted
Michael,

On the topic of top tube lengths:
I have a 56cm SimpleOne and my wife has a 52cm Sam Hillborne. Ill try and
help you out with your top tube length questions.
The length of my wife's Sam's sloping top tube is about 55.5cm. So when you
write that your Sam's TT is 55.5 and that it is shorter than the geometry
chart says I presume you talking about the actual length of the tube v.s.
the equivalent or effective or horizontal TT length of the frame (which
is what the geometry chart gives). Since the Sam has a sloping TT and the
SimpleBeams have nearly horizontal ones, comparing the actual lengths of
top tubes is not the way estimate how long a stem you may want. What you
want to compare is the horizontal distance between the head tube and the
seat post (or seat tube).
The RBW geometry charts give the effective TT length for the 56 SO as 56.5
and, and gives 57.5 for the 52 Sam. Eyeballing horizontal with my tape
measure on our bikes those seem accurate to me. Based on that you might
think the SO will fit like its 1cm shorter (in length) than the Sam. But
the seat tube angles are different too and that factors into it as well. A
steeper seat tube angle gives a longer feeling top tube, assuming put your
seat the same distance behind the bottom bracket. The one degree difference
in seat tube angles should eat up that 1 cm effective TT length difference.
So all things considered, I suspect you would find the reach on a 56cm
SimpleOne very close to that of your 52cm Sam Hillborne. If you want a
frame with less reach, I guess you would want a 54cm Quickbeam since the
SimpleOnes didn't come in that size. It may also be worth noting that 5cm
Nitto stems are available from Bens's (I have one on my SimpleOne now).

On Saturday, December 21, 2013 6:41:02 PM UTC-8, Michael wrote:

Thanks Jim and everybody for the great info!

 1. Looks like the smallest Simple One ever in production was a 56cm frame?
That means the 56.5 TT c-c, according to the posted geometry charts at RBW,
is too long for me to use drops, which I would want on this bike. I am
maxed out with drops on my on my 55.5 TT c-c Sam with a 6cm stem extension.
Very comfy though. But wouldn't want another 1.5cm longer.

Maybe someone here can measure their 56cm SimpleOne's TT c-c and post back
what theirs actually is. If anyone has time and feels like it.
Maybe it is shorter in real time than the geo charts say. It is that way
with the 52cm Sam because of the sloping theory.

 2. The SO and QB are both coastable, right?

Thanks again for the great info, everyone!
Maybe I will wait for the new one to come out next year if me and 29 peeps
put down the cash money in time. That would take some spousal convincing
though, or selling my - perish the thought - Bleriot.

[RBW] Re: Bridgestone motorcycle

2013-12-22 Thread George Millwood
No it wasn't a rotary shift on the 350 GTR, it was on the smaller bikes,
in particular, the 90. I know, I rode a 350 GTR belonging to a friend.
Tanyrate, it was never that big a problem. At the time, motorcycle gear
shifts were in a state of flux. I quote

In the 1970s and earlier, the British made bikes that shifted with the
right foot. Some were down for first and up for everything else. Some were
up for first and down for the rest. Then the Japanese jumped in with
neutral all the way up and everything else down, or neutral down and all
the rest up. To make things really interesting they also came up with a
rotary shift, which went 1,2,3,4, neutral,1,2,3,4, neutral... etc.
Supposedly this was to make city riding easier. All you had to do was shift
down one more time, to get into neutral, as you come up to a stop light.
One bike, the Bridgestone 175*,* even gave you a choice between four gear
rotary shift or five gear oneup, the rest down shifting. A lever on the
crankcase let you choose. Not only that, but before 1965 there was an extra
neutral between fourth and fifth gears too !

In Australia, we had British, Japanese, Italian and Spanish motorcycles.
You got used to thinking about what you were doing. A useful attribute in
an age of narrow tyres, small cable operated drum brakes and flexible
chassis with a motor capable of reaching 90 to 100 mph. Nearly as risky as
barrelling down a steep hill on a bicycle with brakes that according to the
maker were designed to slow you down not bring you to a stop.

[RBW] Solstice Ride

2013-12-22 Thread Meade Anderson
Dan, Eric, Greg, Paul and I did a loop through western Goochland and
eastern Fluvanna Counties yesterday with lunch at an old stage stop,
Wilmington and coffee on Elk Island. Record warm temperatures and dry
weather made for a pleasant change from the often cold, damp, etc weather
seen on the solstice...times have changed as we went by a number of closed
country stores and at least two former stage stops before we ran across an
open country store. And that place is one of the poorest excuses for a
country store I know about, unless of course your interest lies with
Richards Wild Irish Rose and its multitude of flavors...

Bottom line, wonderful day, great ride, fun...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/julianmeade/sets/72157638898941363/

moustache, they are set up with a dirt drop stem for now, shimano bar ends and
shimano levers. My first around the block ride extended for about 20 minutes
because I was enjoying it so much!

This is the first time I've paired the Alba's mounted 'right side up' with my
B67 saddle... Really nice match I think, really really upright. But in a good
way.

Pictures tomorrow!

2013-12-22 Thread Michael
Remember this from a while back?
Anyone heard anything.
I think it was gonna be designed by an employee?
