it was going to be one of those angry solo rides where I'm trying to take
out all my frustration on my bike.
Ended up with folks rolling along. Good people.
Marc, who I haven't seen since the last last Rivendell Garage sale.
Brendan, Kurt, Puck and Tom who was riding his new/old ibis.

Early ride stoppage ended up being the new bike issues. Something about a
blown sidewalls. Nothing 3 dollar bills can't fixed.

Rambled through the Headlands. Gingerly due to Tom's blown sidewalls. We
ended up to four bike shops looking for a plump 26 tire. No luck.

Still ended up being a great ride. Lovely lunch at Hill 88 and lots of
hike/biking. Decided to take up some more single track but Kurt ended up
being a little to ambitious on the dirt ride down. Ended up crashing.
Looked seriously but ended up laughing about it and grabbing coffee

[RBW] FS: Two Riv Frames: 58 Simple One and 58 Rambouillet

2014-04-28 Thread allenmichael
I have two Riv frames for sale in SF. I am selling because I have a 58
Orange Rambouillet that I am spending all my time on.

The first is a Green 58 Rambouillet; the second is a 58 Maroon Simple One.

The Simple One was a prototype, only different in that it does not have the
dropout angled to allow changing rear sprocket without having to adjust
brake position.

Both are in very good condition, nothing like showroom or new, but both
perfect in terms of riding. In both cases, selling f/f/hs//bb.

Rambouillet $850

Simple One $750

I also have enough parts to finish out a build on either frame that I can
include if you are missing wheel sets, handlebars, cranksets, racks, bags,
or anything else.

Please reply off list. I can send pictures to interested parties.

[RBW] Two more builds

2014-04-28 Thread Bill Lindsay
I've finished two new builds recently. Both have been in the queue for
quite a while, and I think I've referred to both of them pretty extensively
so these aren't totally new to regulars and those of you who watch my
photostream. First is the Double Speed

Double Speed https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/14035663842/

I'd been kind of sort of waiting for a Quickbeam to fall in my lap.
Instead this Gunnar frameset came up here on the list and I took a flyer.
There's no way I ever could run a true singlespeed. There's too much
steep uphill riding in my daily life. Since this bike has regular track
dropouts and caliper brakes, I set it up as a 2x2 with a single chain
length. 38x16 is my high gear and 35x19 is my low gear. A flashy
highlight is another harlequin wrap job.

Trail
Kroozerhttps://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/13990655404/in/photostream/

This is a 1987 Schwinn Paramountain 26 wheel mountain bike. I got this
second hand and did an overhaul, a Bosco Bullmoose conversion and added a
red B-17. Check out the extra swank front and rear Suntour Roller cam
brakes! I'm going to have this up for sale at the Harding Elementary
School fundraiser this Saturday for $600. If it doesn't sell, I'll keep it
for myself. It's a 22 (56cm) frame, with a 75.5cm Saddle Height in the
photo. I took a page out of Pudge's book in that I bought the bike for
$400, did the overhaul, added about $400 worth of parts and am selling it
for $600. Fiscal responsibility isn't my strong suit.

I am almost the same exact size, and I fit very well on a 58 Simple One.
This was the size that the Riv sizing chart recommended, and it worked
well. I had it set up with a 7 or 8 stem and Dove Bars. The quick beam
sizing should be the same.

I've been a fan of Tiagra and Alivio parts for years. It's decent looking,

worked at a Trek shop, Trek had price-point bikes for every Shimano group.
It was usually an easy upsell to let the customer convince himself/herself
that the more expensive models had smoother shifting or whatever. I always
thought it was funny that the fanciest part was usually the rear
derailleur. Trek could get away with a lower end part-spec, but put an
Ultegra rear derailleur on the bike, and it became a high performance
 machine!

 It's also somewhat funny to put a $30 derailleur on a $2000 frame. I
wonder if you get the same effect by putting a $200 frame on a $300
 derailleur.

Kevin

No, the brake adjustment is the same for both gears. Assume that I'm
riding in High gear, the 38x16, and I get to a steep hill. I get off and
grab my 6mm allen key. I loosen the right axle nut (not the left). I then
backpedal and move the chain from the 38 down to the 35 in front. Then I
move the slack chain from the 16 to the 19 in back. Then I tighten the
right axle nut again. Perfect chain tension and the wheel is in exactly
the same place.

[RBW] Fold Away Bike Workshop

2014-04-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
A few folks asked about what my fold away bike workshop looks like. Well, it
now has the $5 bike work lift installed, so I'm all set to work on drivetrains
now (good thing since my new one arrives today via UPS!) Grin.

Here is the bike life. Everything else fits in a tool box and goes on a shelf.
Works great and cleans up easily.

2014-04-28 Thread Joe Bunik
I'll give a full Cheviot report soon, but am so pleased-as-punch with
the brakes that I'll just mention it now...

They were an ebay score (relatively) and so I was willing to ignore
their mis-matchy nature. I'd originally intended to build it up
entirely w/ black parts, but my wife (it's her trail shredder!)
thought that was too Halloween-y, so it morphed into a
orange-silver-black thing. In light of that, the brakes now make
perfect sense! ;-) Since then, I noticed that the black/silver Racers
seem to be available from a variety of online retailers.

They are exactly what the doctor ordered - I loved the Smart Sams on
the demo @RBWHQ, but clearance with the sidepulls was just a bit
tight. Considered Dia-Compes, but thought my client deserved no less
than the best! ;-)

Re: [RBW] Re: Geometry, climbing, what's going on?

2014-04-28 Thread Anne Paulson
I figured out one position change that made a big difference.

I have Jones Loop H bars, which I like a lot. But I'd been always riding
with my hands out at the ends of the bars. Turns out, if I put my thumbs
inside the loop and grasp the bars that way, it makes a huge difference in
climbing. Huge. My hands have moved forward and inboard, and now the front
wheel tracks a whole lot better.

On Sat, Apr 26, 2014 at 7:04 PM, Nils Eng n...@silvercca.org wrote:

 Anne,
Don't despair! This is EXACTLY the experience I had on my Krampus, but
now it's sorted and he'd climb a telephone pole if I had the legs. I think
it's the front end-- it's really slack-- and the way there is mucho weight
on the back wheel. While the All-Mountain geometry IS great for going
down hills, it has the drawback of a wander-y front-end going uphill.
Long story short-- I got a longer stem, flipped it (downward), and dropped
it down until I got the balance of downhill and uphill handling
characteristics I wanted. I also moved my saddle forward a bit. The basic
idea was to move weight forward and down w/o losing too much downhill
awesomeness. My stem was stock 70 mm and I'm now riding a 100. I kept the
same degree of rise as the original (7 degrees?) and then moved the stem
down a spacer at a time until I liked it. I also read somewhere that Grant
thought that longer chain stays helped w/ climbing, so I moved the wheel
back in the dropout, but I moved it back because I like the way it turns
better with shorter stays. Anyway, I think with a little tweaking you can
get it to feel the way you like. All the best,
 Nils

I'm a big fan of low, low gears. I have them on both my Atlantises; my
Roadeo has pretty low gears too considering I never carry much on it.
People always say to me, I don't want lower gears because then I couldn't
balance. I never understood that. I don't have a bit of problem riding at
2.5 mph for long periods of time when I'm climbing something ridiculously
steep on one of my Rivendell bikes.

But now I understand. I thought when I bought my new Surly Krampus
mountain bike I'd be able to climb even steeper dirt roads than I now can
climb on my Atlanti. I thought, I have an absurdly low gear on the Krampus
(15.6 inches, something like that), I have all the traction in the world, I
 can climb anything.

But no. I'm finding that I climb *worse* on the Krampus. It's
frustrating. There are dirt sections that I have no trouble on with the
Atlantis, with smooth tires, that I can't climb on the Krampus with the
 knobbies.

What's going on here? Front-end geometry? Wheel weight? Bottom bracket
height? I'm beginning to think I should have bought the Surly ECR (like
several people recommended) instead of the Krampus. Or maybe I just need to
learn how to climb on this new bike.

On the other hand, when I bought the bike I also thought I'd be able to
go down steep trails that I'm afraid to descend on the Atlantis, and that
has proved to be true. My husband took one look at my new bike and said,
Wow, you have better traction on that than you have on foot. When I apply
the brakes on a steep downhill, the bike *slows down* instead of skidding.

Excellent, Anne! Yes, that is my preferred position for climbing as well,
relatively, and one of the reasons I so love the Albastache bars. Great job
playing around -- keep on learning!

Don't despair! This is EXACTLY the experience I had on my Krampus, but

it's the front end-- it's really slack-- and the way there is mucho weight
on the back wheel.
All the best,
 Nils

[RBW] WTB: Albatross bars, V brakes, and a question

2014-04-28 Thread Christian
Hi all,

I am rebuilding my wife's old Nishiki. I'd like to buy a pair of Albatross bars
if anyone has a pair they want to part with. Otherwise I'll order a pair from
Riv. Also looking for a set of v brakes--I've come to prefer them over cantis
for ease of set up and cheapness and performance. Finally, a question: will an
8 speed cassette fit on a 7 speed free hub? The bike is set up with old
Shimano 400cx components and it's got a seven speed cassette on it that I might
want to swap with an 8.

Thanks all

Re: [RBW] Re: Geometry, climbing, what's going on?

2014-04-28 Thread Anne Paulson
I bought the Krampus frame and had it build up, so I don't know anything
about the stock build. But the Jones bars have a lot of advantages. For
downhill, I like the wide bar-end position. I also like the wide position
for just boppin' along. If I want to move a little forward, I can just
choke up the bar ends, moving my hands about three inches in and forward,
and still have access to the brake levers. And if I want to move more
forward, I stick my thumbs inside the loop and grab. Definitely a lot of
hand positions.

Plus, having the loop part works well for strapping things onto the bars
for camping.

[RBW] On-bike tools: what is your choice or favorite?

2014-04-28 Thread Joan Oppel
I'm in the market for a new multi-tool for on-bike repairs and adjustments. I don't think I need all of the 26 or 27 items I currently carry. The ones I've used most have been the allen wrenches in various sizes up to 8, the chain tool, the 10mm box wrench (I think 10, it's whatever size adjusts the nuts on fenders), and very occasionally the flat screwdriver. The chain tool is a definite keeper, I've used it a number of times to help friends (and once for myself).I thought there was a discussion a few months ago about on-bike tools, but a search of the archives didn't turn up anything. Thanks!JoanPS -I also carry a couple of zip ties, duct tape wrapped around a piece of cardboard (has seen various uses including to keep bandages on), couple of cut-up segments of old tires and plastic tire levers/patch kit/tube. My travel tool set is very light and minimal:

   - Park multi-tool MT1
   - Leatherman Sidekick
   - Park travel chain tool

These pretty much cover anything I would want to fix while on the road.
For anything more I would either go to an LBS or find some alternate way

Re: [RBW] Re: Geometry, climbing, what's going on?

2014-04-28 Thread John Philip
My experience with the Jones Loop Bar is quite similar. I changed to the
Loop Bar on my 9:ZERO:7 snow bike this winter and it quickly became clear
that pegging my grip at the bar ends wasn't going to work. That position
resulted in little front end control climbing but also a distinct lack of
front wheel grip on slippery descents . Choking up-- really using the
entire bar-- made a huge difference. I'm seldom on the ends unless i'm
just cruising along on the flat and that's on well consolidated snow. I've
yet to try them in the dirt but I'll give them and the 3.8 Knards a try
soon. Over all I'm quite impressed with the bar.

for just boppin' along. If I want to move a little forward, I can just
choke up the bar ends, moving my hands about three inches in and forward,
and still have access to the brake levers. And if I want to move more
forward, I stick my thumbs inside the loop and grab. Definitely a lot of
 hand positions.

Plus, having the loop part works well for strapping things onto the bars
 for camping.

balance. I never understood that. I don't have a bit of problem riding at
2.5 mph for long periods of time when I'm climbing something ridiculously

But now I understand. I thought when I bought my new Surly Krampus

frustrating.

Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Sizing

I've found (YMMV) that Quickbeams tend to run a touch large. So while I
normally ride 61cm Rivendell frame perfectly, a 60cm Quickbeam is just
perfect and a 62cm QB *feels* HUGE. That's with an 89PBH. Just a data point
to further confuse your decision making process. If the 60 is a good deal,
pick it up, and if it doesn't work out, you won't lose much or maybe even
trade for a 58 down the line.

Have you got the long Jones loop, or the shorter one? When I was
testriding, I tried the longer one, but didn't like it. The short one,
OTOH, is excellent. So far, the bar-end position is working for me on
descents, though maybe I just don't go down slippery descents. Usually I'm
trying to get my weight back, not forward, on descents.
