[RBW] FS: Two Riv Frames: 58 Simple One and 58 Rambouillet

When I worked at a Trek shop, Trek had price-point bikes for every Shimano group. It was usually an easy upsell to let the customer convince himself/herself that the more expensive models had smoother shifting or whatever. I always thought it was funny that the fanciest part was usually the rear derailleur. Trek could get away with a lower end part-spec, but put an Ultegra rear derailleur on the bike, and it became a high performance machine! It's also somewhat funny to put a $30 derailleur on a $2000 frame. Kevin No, the brake adjustment is the same for both gears. Assume that I'm riding in High gear, the 38x16, and I get to a steep hill. I get off and grab my 6mm allen key. I loosen the right axle nut (not the left). I then backpedal and move the chain from the 38 down to the 35 in front. Then I move the slack chain from the 16 to the 19 in back. Then I tighten the right axle nut again. Perfect chain tension and the wheel is in exactly the same place. I guess I haven't done that much hike-a-bike stuff. I've mostly ridden on fire roads and other low-traffic or abandoned roads, rather than fight through brush. On my local rides, I definitely push/carry my bike through some stuff, but I'm not usually packing a sackville on those rides. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: sighted: double-top tube Atlantis!
I'll give a full Cheviot report soon, but am so pleased-as-punch with the brakes that I'll just mention it now... They were an ebay score (relatively) and so I was willing to ignore their mis-matchy nature. I'd originally intended to build it up entirely w/ black parts, but my wife (it's her trail shredder!) thought that was too Halloween-y, so it morphed into a orange-silver-black thing. In light of that, the brakes now make perfect sense! ;-) Since then, I noticed that the black/silver Racers seem to be available from a variety of online retailers. They are exactly what the doctor ordered - I loved the Smart Sams on the demo @RBWHQ, but clearance with the sidepulls was just a bit tight. Considered Dia-Compes, but thought my client deserved no less than the best! ;-) =- Joe Bunik Walnut Creek, CA On 4/28/14, Bill Lindsay tapebu...@gmail.com wrote: Where have I been!?!? I figured out one position change that made a big difference. I have Jones Loop H bars, which I like a lot. But I'd been always riding with my hands out at the ends of the bars. [RBW] WTB: Albatross bars, V brakes, and a question
Hi all, I am rebuilding my wife's old Nishiki. I'd like to buy a pair of Albatross bars if anyone has a pair they want to part with. Otherwise I'll order a pair from Riv. Also looking for a set of v brakes--I've come to prefer them over cantis for ease of set up and cheapness and performance. Finally, a question: will an 8 speed cassette fit on a 7 speed free hub? The bike is set up with old Shimano 400cx components and it's got a seven speed cassette on it that I might want to swap with an 8. [RBW] Re: WTB: Albatross bars, V brakes, and a question
You might have a problem with the cassette. Recalling from the dustbin of my memory, that 400cx stuff might have had a weird shaped cassette body, maybe for an extra small lowest cog? I don't remember exactly. Take it apart and it should be self-evident. Re: [RBW] Re: Geometry, climbing, what's going on?
I bought the Krampus frame and had it build up, so I don't know anything about the stock build. But the Jones bars have a lot of advantages. For downhill, I like the wide bar-end position. I also like the wide position for just boppin' along. If I want to move a little forward, I can just choke up the bar ends, moving my hands about three inches in and forward, and still have access to the brake levers. And if I want to move more forward, I stick my thumbs inside the loop and grab. Definitely a lot of hand positions. Plus, having the loop part works well for strapping things onto the bars for camping. [RBW] On-bike tools: what is your choice or favorite?
I'm in the market for a new multi-tool for on-bike repairs and adjustments. I don't think I need all of the 26 or 27 items I currently carry. The ones I've used most have been the allen wrenches in various sizes up to 8, the chain tool, the 10mm box wrench (I think 10, it's whatever size adjusts the nuts on fenders), and very occasionally the flat screwdriver. The chain tool is a definite keeper, I've used it a number of times to help friends (and once for myself).I thought there was a discussion a few months ago about on-bike tools, but a search of the archives didn't turn up anything. Thanks!JoanPS -I also carry a couple of zip ties, duct tape wrapped around a piece of cardboard (has seen various uses including to keep bandages on), couple of cut-up segments of old tires and plastic tire levers/patch kit/tube. Re: [RBW] Re: Geometry, climbing, what's going on?
My experience with the Jones Loop Bar is quite similar. I changed to the Loop Bar on my 9:ZERO:7 snow bike this winter and it quickly became clear that pegging my grip at the bar ends wasn't going to work. That position resulted in little front end control climbing but also a distinct lack of front wheel grip on slippery descents . Choking up-- really using the entire bar-- made a huge difference. I'm seldom on the ends unless i'm just cruising along on the flat and that's on well consolidated snow. I've yet to try them in the dirt but I'll give them and the 3.8 Knards a try soon. Over all I'm quite impressed with the bar. I never understood that. I don't have a bit of problem riding at 2.5 mph for long periods of time when I'm climbing something ridiculously steep on one of my Rivendell bikes. But now I understand. I thought when I bought my new Surly Krampus mountain bike I'd be able to climb even steeper dirt roads than I now can climb on my Atlanti. I thought, I have an absurdly low gear on the Krampus (15.6 inches, something like that), I have all the traction in the world, I can climb anything. But no. I'm finding that I climb *worse* on the Krampus. It's frustrating. There are dirt sections that I have no trouble on with the Atlantis, with smooth tires, that I can't climb on the Krampus with the knobbies. What's going on here? Front-end geometry? Wheel weight? Bottom bracket height? I'm beginning to think I should have bought the Surly ECR (like several people recommended) instead of the Krampus. Or maybe I just need to learn how to climb on this new bike. On the other hand, when I bought the bike I also thought I'd be able to go down steep trails that I'm afraid to descend on the Atlantis, and that has proved to be true. My husband took one look at my new bike and said, Wow, you have better traction on that than you have on foot. When I apply the brakes on a steep downhill, the bike *slows down* instead of skidding. -- -- Anne Paulson It isn't a contest. Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Sizing
I've found (YMMV) that Quickbeams tend to run a touch large. So while I normally ride 61cm Rivendell frame perfectly, a 60cm Quickbeam is just perfect and a 62cm QB *feels* HUGE. That's with an 89PBH. Just a data point to further confuse your decision making process. If the 60 is a good deal, pick it up, and if it doesn't work out, you won't lose much or maybe even trade for a 58 down the line. Cheers, David it isn't a contest. Just enjoy the ride. - Seth Vidal On Mon, Apr 28, 2014 at 11:21 AM, Michael Fleischman michaeljfleisch...@gmail.com wrote: I talked to Mark over at Riv and he said a 58cm is what I need. That's my experience too, had a 56, 84cm PBH, 5'9, fit great. Ryan On Monday, April 28, 2014 7:17:40 PM UTC-7, cyclot...@gmail.com wrote: I've found (YMMV) that Quickbeams tend to run a touch large. Re: [RBW] Re: Geometry, climbing, what's going on?
Have you got the long Jones loop, or the shorter one? When I was testriding, I tried the longer one, but didn't like it. The short one, OTOH, is excellent. So far, the bar-end position is working for me on descents, though maybe I just don't go down slippery descents. Usually I'm trying to get my weight back, not forward, on descents. On Mon, Apr 28, 2014 at 7:15 PM, John Philip japhilip4...@gmail.com wrote: My experience with the Jones Loop Bar is quite similar. On Monday, April 28, 2014 9:20:46 PM UTC-4, Anne Paulson wrote: I bought the Krampus frame and had it build up, so I don't know anything about the stock build.
