True. I thought that the 60 looked quite a lot larger than the 55 (more
than 5cm to the naked eye ;)). I don't know anyone in Portland who rides a
step through and I have never owned one myself so wasn't sure how the
fitting would work out. She was hands down more confident on the 55 without
a doubt. So that is the direction we are going to go. i plan on calling G
in the morning, hoping that they might work out for the golden ticket which
is a 55cm Orange. It sounds like the 2016 frames will all be done in the
Olive Green color only.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Stuinniker bag evolution

2016-03-04 Thread 'clayton bailey' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks, Phil. I am working hard at getting better, but sewing is not a natural
thing for me. I struggle, so I must enjoy the challenge or pain, I haven't
decided which it is.
Stuinniker is a name I came up with in honor of my father whose name was
Stuart. He was a prisoner of war during world war two and survived the Battan
Death March and numerous near death experiences from disease, malnutrition and
abuse. He went by Stu and loved sailing. He had severe PTSD and drank
constantly. I never got to know him.  I have PTSD, so I feel a small connection
to him.
The 'inniker' comes from Spinniker. The Stuinniker acts as a Spinniker when
unrolled and the top of the bag is strapped to the handle bars. I tried it out
and it works. It is kind of fun to be pedaling along and think, "I am having a
tailwind, time to hoist the sail". I pull over and hoist it. I haven't tried it
in really strong winds as it can't be reefed down When up, it also helps
block my knees from the cold and acts as a cold weather/snow fairing. Each
prototype has become smaller and this is as small as I will take it. It still
needs to act like a sail, to keep the name, and it needs to be big enough to
hold my bikepacking load.
Right now I am disgruntled. The old axiom, "Pick two: Light, strong or cheap"
applies to bags too.  The X-pac is not holding up to repeated rolling and
unrolling. The plastic lamination seems to be delaminating and wearing through
where the roll down stiffener hits the plastic. The whole top third of the bag,
which is the major part of the roll down, is looking sad. I haven't even got to
use it camping yet. I thought I was done...This could be failure number ninety
three?.facepalm. I either remake the whole bag with a fabric I haven't
discovered yet that is light, waterproof and durable, or make a siliconized
ripstop liner bag. So guess what? Tomorrow, I make a siliconized ripstop liner
bag and seal it with bathroom caulk. I am tired of Stuinniker. Sorry Dad. RIP.
(My frame bags should be fine, as they are static).
After the liner bag,  I plan on making a rear rack top bag. Since the
Stuinniker is a combo of a Randonneur bag, fitted basket bag, Shop Sack,
bikepacking bag and stuff sack, with the total being greater than the sum,  it
only follows the rear should follow the same design idea. How do I combine the
best features of a rack trunk, bikepacking seat bag, stuff sack and Rivendell
rack top type bag and make something that is truly perfected for my needs?  I
haven't even begun to think about it, but I am excited about the upcoming
creative process. But for now
I am tired. I need to take a day off first. Or maybe a week.

What's the etymology of "Stuinniker?" It's one of those words that now pop into

Hi folks,
Spring is coming! I can't wait to go bike camping. This winter I have been
making all my own bike packing bags. I have some ideas on a new type of rear
rack top bag. It is my next project, but for now,the development ot the
Stuinniker front rack bag continues. I used X-pac expedition fabric and padded
the bottom third of the bag with closed cell foam that is glue laminated
between two layers of fabric. (I used X-pac for my frame bags too). When used
as a basket bag, I can let the U-lock bounce around in the bag without worrying
it's going to wear out the fabric. The sorta rigid bottom allowed me to get rid
of all the load control straps except for the two side straps. Instead of using
ABS as the snap plate, I used carbon fiber and a modified draw latch. The snap
plate is removable when used as a basket bag. The small black bag is a bag I
made for my son for his bullmoosed Stumpy. For more photos, search #Stuinniker

2016-03-04 Thread cyclotourist
Doug, your recollections are correct. Parking is at the (lovely) Redlands
Mall: https://goo.gl/maps/3RPS6YEoPeD2

>From there it is less than two minutes to the registration and staging area
at the BikeBBQ https://goo.gl/maps/yypHWCszZ3U2

We'll see how we do getting all those people taken care of! :-)

Locals are encouraged to pre-register on Friday night at Stell Coffee.

Great post-ride party with live music.

Still spots for the 50k and 100 mile routes.

[RBW] RE:RE: 56cm Rivendell Atlantis

2016-03-04 Thread Hugh Smitham

Okay, okay last and final bump for a long, long while. Seeings how I've
been cajoled by some to find my absolute rock bottom price I might as well
make the same offer to the rest of the bikey universe. Complete bike as
seen in the pictures and parts listed below $2100 shipped in the CONUS if'n
you're in Australia sorry mate but the cost and effort is way too steep.
And if you're not sure this is the right size for you ask the group here or
better yet call Rivendell they're infinitely better at fielding those
questions than I. Here's the number: (925) 933-7304.

If you detect a bit of annoyance on my part well I get folks who work
on whittling me down on price then need time to figure out if it's the
right size or what's the max wheel size with fenders? Please, please figure
this out before talking to me. And if you want an Atlantis built for under
$2000 in decent condition don't bother. Buy my brother's Hillborne for
$1950 or maybe a Clem if they have your size left? Or a LHT?

On condition and miles: I have no idea what the F/F have total I bought it
used. The Drive has under 1000 miles (what I put on it) lots of life left.
The Wheelset shown and listed has maybe 200 miles on them and this is an
arbitrary guess? I purchased the XT wheelset from eBay which I intended for
the original build but eventually built a different set up with a Dyno hub.
The bike was originally owned by a lady in Seattle and it was never
crashed. I repainted it because I'm stupid that way. There are no dents or
dings but there are some scratches "Beausage" The bike rides like a dream
and can carry a full touring load with aplomb and unloaded it
rides nimble and spirited.

On F/F/HS: Sure PayPay me $1400 shipped @ h...@smitham.com and I'll take
all the parts off and ship it ASAP.

Whew that feels good!

[RBW] March bike stuff tag sale

2016-03-04 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello friends-

March is here! And that means cleaning out the parts bins of things I’m not
using and don’t need anymore. So maybe you want or need?

All prices listed are in US dollars and DO NOT INCLUDE SHIPPING. Please
contact me to see what shipping would look like. Payment will be via
Paypal, friends and family payment preferred. If you are local (Portland OR
area) you can purchase with cash in person, either in the Woodlawn
neighborhood of NE or on SE Hawthorne. Estimated shipping prices
included. Combine items for better shipping. Send a private message if you
want something!

   - Twofish “Quickcage”. A bottle cage made by Twofish specifically for
Klean Kanteen bottles. Cage itself is vinyl lined, and attaches to bike via
velcro strap. $5 plus $5 shipping.
   - Velo Orange “Baguette” handlebar or saddle bag. A nice sized
barrel-stale handlebar bag, attaches to handlebars via two leather straps
(included) or via the side loops (which you can use zipties.) I used this
bag for a few years. The side loops and front leather loop (which can be
used as a rear light holder if used as a saddlebag) have been reinforced.
Shows a bit of glue residue on the front from patches that were on there.
Please note that the bag is NOT waterproof, and the third leather strap is
not included. $10 plus $5 shipping.
   - Linus rear rack. A classic looking aluminum rack rated for 40lbs (25
kg). Has adjustable struts that attach to the seatstays. Also has hook
loops at the bottom for panniers. Extra hardware included (though clamps
for seatstays if you don’t have braze-ons, are not included.) $20 plus
   $8-16 shipping.
   - Spanninga Micro FF LED Dynamo headlamp. A very, very, VERY basic LED
headlight for dynamo systems. Good for utility bikes. If you plan on doing
extensive night riding, may I suggest a nicer B+M headlamp? $5 plus
   $4shipping.
   - Persons “Supreme” black rubber pedal blocks. Used for rebuilding older
style rubber block pedals. From a project I never got around to. $5 plus $5
   shipping.
   - Old bottle dynamo. Unknown make, probably from the 70’s. Your typical
old-school bottle dynamo. Mounting hardware included. $5 plus $4 shipping.

Photos here. (Please note that the set below has photos of items already
   claimed/purchased.)

Dave (and Mark),

Just in case you aren't aware of this, or missed the crux of what Toshi was
saying in his post above, the Ram makes a reasonably good candidate for a
650b conversion. That would give you, Dave, the fatter tires you desire
and you, Mark, room for some good fenders that you want.

Do a topic search using the name "retroshift," which was what they called
themselves until recently. (or follow link below):

Looks like there are a few threads discussing them. I don't have any first
hand experience or knowledge to add though.

I like Kelly Takeoff mounts. Something else to consider:

[RBW] Cheviot in betweener opinions?

2016-03-04 Thread Joe Bernard
I'll answer it this way: I have a 78pbh and ride a 45cm CLEM with Albas on a
12cm stem..fits great. I tried a Bosco on that stem and it was WAY too close to
me..I think that bar/stem would work on the next size up, a 52. Based on these
parameters, I think the 60 Chev felt huge to her because the Boscos were wide,
tall and in her face. Therefore I think the 60 with Boscos would fit, but is
that what she wants? She's already decided a 55 with Albas feels good, so there
may be no point in talking her into a different size and bar.

[RBW] Cheviot in betweener opinions?

2016-03-04 Thread Zach Kahl
Hey all!

My fiance has been on the hunt for a Chev for a while and falls between the
55 and 60. She is 5'8" with a PBH of 85. She test rode the 55 that had
albatross bars on it and she thought it "felt great". The seatpost showed
about 15 cm. Then she rode the 60, setup with boscos and thought that the
bike "felt huge" which I *feel* is largely attributed to the bars. The
seatpost on the 60 showed about 3-5 cm.

Now the fiasco lies in here - Riv is all out on the 55 until the next
orders come in around (maybe August?), so does one get a 60 now and set it
up with a 9cm stem and a sweep back bar that feels more nimble at chance
that it really will feel too large? Or just wait out for the 55, possibly
missing a lot of summer touring with me here in sunny (in the summer)
Oregon? The great thing about a stepthrough is the huge range that it can
suit, yet there lies a risk of still being too large for her to really have
a good time on. She has been on a bike for 10 years that I feel runs a bit
small for her, so I think it will take some time to be comfortable on a
frame that fits her correctly and so on...

Not looking for an answer but merely wanted to reach out to those here who
know the name Rivendell as well as understand that waiting is part of the
reason we all own RBW bikes and makes them all the more special. I respect
everyone heres opinions, so thank you if you have one!!!

[RBW] FS Spring Bike Cleaning

2016-03-04 Thread Hugh Smitham
Hey Folks,

Over the years I ended up collecting miscellaneous parts. Shipping within
the CONUS. Hit me up off list if you're interested.

Of note, the Dura Ace Wheelset I purchased for a friends Trek 520 build but
I've decided to do a 650b conversion on that bike so I don't have need for
these. I paid $150 and I'm just passing the price along, these were built
by Colorado Cyclist and are in great shape. The Sram Compact Crank was used
briefly less than 50 miles the GXP Bottom Bracket that came with the Apex
Group Set I'm using, I did find another GXP Bottom used but I make no
guarantees whether it'll work, I believe it will but you may need spacers
for your configuration. The Apex brakes & cassette are brand new. On all
the smaller least expensive items I'm just guessing on the shipping cost?
The Fatty Rumpkin's have a ton of life left in them. The Platrack stays
have been cut and measure approx 41mm they fit perfectly on my 58cm A.
Homer.

On shipping I'll do my very best to get the item(s) out promptly.

If you want additional pictures let me know.

Funny. I just rode to my daughter's school, a mile south, to escort her
home. She is 14 y and 9 months old, and the Dahon is one of the many things
that just embarrasses the hell out of her (my cycling caps are another) --
even though I got exactly 4 comments from students and faculty today
saying, in effect, the bike is "cute." (Daughter says, "Yeah, cute like a
hairless cat is cute.") I'm sure having a tatty, huge saddlebag doesn't
improve the image in her eyes.

[RBW] FS - Suntour Command Shifters

2016-03-04 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
I purchased these Suntour Accushift Plus Command Shifters in 1992 for a
Bontrager CX bike with original WTB Dirt Drops. I used them (and liked
them) for a year before moving to Suntour bar cons. They are in good
condition, 5-6-7 speed and indexed or friction and are the equivalent of
Superbe Pro / XC Pro. Model(s) SL-CD01-R7 & SL-CD01-L. They are seen here
on the vintage cycling database VeloBase, com:
I have 4 images in a Flickr album:

I'm not really sure what these are worth but have seen them on flea-bay
used for $90 and NOS for as much as $220! If a list member can put them to
use, I'll forward them for $60.00, which includes $6.80 for a USPS Priority

Re: [RBW] FS 56cm Rivendell Sam Hillborne (double top tube)

2016-03-04 Thread Patrick Moore
Has anyone 650B'd a Sam Hill? If so, how fat a tire can it fit? And, next,
does Compass (or anyone else) make a tire in that size and in an "extra
light" casing?

More precisely: with 584s, how fat a tire can you get into a SH without
fenders, and #2, how fat with fenders?

50 mm, if the tire is supple, is (IME) a sort of sweet turning point for
tire width, at least for the sandy soils I ride in, and 584 is close enough
to 622 that I expect I'd find much of the same improvement over 559 wheels.
(I rode the '03 with 29 mm Elk Passes on our acequia roads yesterday, warm
weather drying the soil and breaking it up into sand, and, while I got
through, it wasn't exactly fun.)

I ask because a 56 SH with 50 or 60 mm tires would be an wonderful "road
bike for dirt." I owned a stt 56 SH, and though I didn't like it for road
riding (it felt doggy, even with Green Jack Browns) I would love one for
dirt if it could accept fatter tires.

And I ask because at the 6-month point, I've still not gotten my custom
Matthews "road bike for dirt" and I want to prepare for alternatives.

2016-03-04 Thread Joe Bernard
It's all water under the bridge now - I believe the fellow involved is no
longer associated with Frost River - but that "original design" is a main
reason why Riv stopped selling it: Grant created the designs; Frost River
produced them for him; then Frost River started selling the bags under their
own brand. My understanding is that guy is out of the bag business now, and
good riddance.

Re: [RBW] Re: That dirty Hoss ...

2016-03-04 Thread Patrick Moore
I am not, but drops on this bike would be too bulky when folding. Even the
M bar is bulkier than the replaced Ritchey bullhorns when folding it, oddly
enough.

I rode 12.5 miles rt on it just now, with attention to bar comfort. While
it's more comfortable than the bullhorns or, say, a straight mtb bar, or
North Road bars, even during the return I found my left palm starting to
tingle, and that the riding position (not adjustable, given the Dahon's
design) puts too much weight on arms and shoulders -- tho' I daresay I
would get used to this particular feeling if I rode the Dahon more.

The M bar does give good steering control, which I did need with the 25
rear load wagging the bike.

I forgot to add that the Sackville Med would carry all this and more; not
only does it have 75% more rated volume, but it is far easier to load. But

[RBW] Re: on bike bag theft

2016-03-04 Thread Neil
I leave an Acorn seat bag permanently attached to a Brooks special, and
never have a worry. Where I live, in the 'burbs, I have the feeling that
anything remotely Rivendellian looks old, and not-valuable. Right down to
the lugs on my Sam. And I'm OK with that.

I would agree, through, that the weirder the bag (up to and including the
Sackville Saddlesack, the weirdest of all!) the less likely it is to be
molested.

[RBW] Re: V-brakes & front racks

2016-03-04 Thread Leslie
My Bombadil has the fork-top braze-ons, so to have a solid support for a
Platrack to hold a Wald, I ran a Tubus rear rack on the front. If I was
running cantis, wouldn't have been as complex, but I'd decided to run Paul
Motolites before thinking about mounting racks. Had to get creative,
bending the rack strut w/ the rack mount on the strut, in order to clear
the brake's cross-bar.

(and toggle forward and backward a pic to see the bends, and mounted)

Another brake, like a Shimano, and then changing arm lengths, would have
been easier

[RBW] Re: Used Rambouillet Value?

2016-03-04 Thread Leslie
George,

My green Ram is one of the last batch, w/ the mid-fork braze-ons, and does
have the pieced windows on the dropouts; I've recently gotten my son an
orange Ram, a tall one, and AAMOF, it needed its derailleur hanger
replaced, had Bilenky fix it up, but RBW supplied the dropout... and it is
the pierced one, too, to match the original that was replaced.

Actually, I just ran and looked: my Romulus has the pierced dropouts,
too...

I really would ponder if a dropout on a Ram or a Rom is solid, if it had
been replaced for some reason.

Bill, it actually looks cleaner in the photos than I remember, and I last saw

Re: [RBW] Re: That dirty Hoss ...

2016-03-04 Thread Patrick Moore
Chris: I'll let you know. I am just about (God willing) to ride the Hon
with Hoss to a grocery 6 miles way, and will return with a noticeable load.

With the earlier bags I've rigged, certainly not as well suited for secure
mounting as the Hoss, I found that even 30 lb loads were surprisingly
manageable while pedaling, but, very oddly, that while pushing the bike, I
had to use 2 hands to keep it under control -- rear wagging was far more
noticeable while pushing than while pedaling.

Lee: This is my second Hoss, and I've used many other saddlebags, large and
small, including a Medium Sackville without support. The Medium carries as
much or even more than the Hoss. Believe me, the Sackville design, for ease
of filling, capacity, and stability, is far, far better than any other,
including the Hoss. If I could have gotten a Sackville M for the same $40
shipped that I paid for the Hoss, I'd have taken it.

IMO, the Sackville is well worth the price -- just not to me, for this
purpose.

[RBW] Re: JoAppa has arrived!

2016-03-04 Thread Christopher Murray
Hello,

Bike is still in the box but I did peek in and it looks amazing. I didn't pay
anything extra for shipping and live in the USA. The box is definitely bigger
than a standard box so maybe that's the reason for fedex?

Cheers,

The one mechanical thing I did get to do was give the wheels a little
touchup on the truing stand. They were nearly perfect, but I was
pleasantly surprised to note that the Kenda Kwick Bitumen tires have a
folding bead. The Appaloosaevery weight weenies favorite bike!
 FACT!

I also took that opportunity to ditch the pie plate.

[RBW] Any Gevenalle users?

2016-03-04 Thread Jack Doran
Hey folks,

I saw the Gevenalle shifters at NAHBS last week and have been considering
giving their Audax model a go. I really like the Paul thumbies for
providing a means of friction shifting near my hand position on Alba bars,
and I am interested in getting something similar on drop bars.

So I'm wondering if any of you have experience with the Gevenalle design.
Is there much of a learning curve? Any issues with the shifters interfering
with braking when you're riding on the hoods?

Jack

[RBW] Re: Used Rambouillet Value?

2016-03-04 Thread 'thalasin' via RBW Owners Bunch

I own RB 031, also with the pierced dropout. I bought the bike used on
EBay in 2003-ish (no one else bid on it!?) and it is really nicely spec'd.
I changed out the stem and put on narrower bars, but that's about it and
thus I don't know the status of my rear brake bridge.

I've also been curious as to the value of the bike. Every so often, I toy
with the idea of selling it but then think better of it.

[RBW] Re: on bike bag theft

2016-03-04 Thread Brad
I leave my Carradice saddlebag on my bike when it's locked up in NYC, and
without any extra security. When I'm at work, I can lock my bike up where
it can't be seen from the street. There's a security guard posted pretty
close to the bike rack. I seriously doubt the guard would stop anyone
trying to steal my bad (or bike), but potential thieves don't seem to know
that.

I'll lock my bike up for an hour or two in all sorts of neighborhoods, but
never overnight. I used to worry about the Carradice, but I don't anymore.
I don't think they register as valuable to the people who steal stuff
around here. And like a lot of other posters have said, my bag looks pretty
worn out and filthy.

I have been running Michelin Endurance by 25mm and 28mm for the last few
months. I love how they feel and the price from places in Great Britain are
really great. On the other hand, not sure about their flat resistance as I
have 2 on the same rear in about 2 months. Of course, could just be bad
luck.

As I understand it this model is now being discontinued in favor of
something newer / better.

[RBW] Re: JoAppa has arrived!

2016-03-04 Thread Bill Lindsay
I picked mine up, but I got there kind of as everyone was leaving, so I
kind of had to grab and go. Also, I'm traveling this weekend as I'm team
mechanic for the High School team. So I had to just hang up my 'Loosa and
pack up my tools instead, for the most part.

Anyhow, I did get to have a conversation with Grant while I was there,
which was a lot of fun, as he and I hadn't crossed paths in a while. One
unexpected surprise was he enthusiastically recommended that I give the
stock saddle a chance. He knows it looks common, but said it's a really
good one. He knows I have a B17 waiting to go on, but urged me to give it
a shot (at least while its raining). Really cool feature is the saddle has
a built in handle. It's super ergo to lift the rear end of the bike by the
saddle. Also that handle/loop is perfect for Saddlesack loops. It's
neat. I like the cranskset and pedals a lot. I'm also happy it's a
genuine Shimano cassette (9sp 12-36). I picked up a set of Dutch paddle
grips, which are nice to me because they are quite short and fit great in
the hand. That will allow me to run the brake levers and shifters way back
and leave more loop up in front accessible for Laying Down the V. :-)
Yellow Newbaums will appoint the loops/hooks with ample amber shellac. The
headset also looks top-notch. The tiny detail that always warms my heart
to see is on the seat lug. At the bottom of the slot that allows you to
clamp the seatpost, there's a stress relief circle. Around that circle is
a raised reinforcement ring. It's a small thing, that is obviously a good
thing, if you bother to do it when you are going to the trouble of casting
a seat lug. Anyhow, I always like it when that raised ring is painted
cream, and it is on my Appaloosa, which makes me smile.

Depending on what exactly I decide to run as a front rack, I might trim all
the cables and housings. I'm suspecting I may end up slamming the
Choco-mooses, but we'll see.

Apologies for no photos or ride info. I was just too busy packing all my
tools. Once I was done, I thought about working on the 'Loosabut then
all my tools were packed! :-(
I guess I could have at least ridden it around the block, but it was
raining and cold, and I didn't want to suit up for it. I was happy to just
stare for a bit

Bill Lindsay
El Cerrito, CA

I also got to see familiar faces Dave and Will, and met delightful new-guy
Roman for the first time. There was a full size run of demo 'Loosas built
up on the floor, so if you fancy a test ride, they are ready.

[RBW] Re: Used Rambouillet Value?

2016-03-04 Thread Kieran J
The vast majority of the Rams I've seen (including most of those posted on
Cyclofiend) have the window dropout. Oranges thru to Greens.

My 68 Orange #RB0384 has it.

[RBW] JoAppa has arrived!

2016-03-04 Thread William R.
I am patiently waiting for a notice that mine has shipped. In the past it has
always been UPS. Chris: if you don't mind me asking: did you pay extra for
FedEx or is that the carrier that Riv is using these days to ship completes? Or
perhaps you are international? Just interested.
