Andrew,
Why not consider the A23? I consider it rather the best of all worlds. Plus
it's available OC (if that's your thing) and you have the option of going
tubeless if you ever decide to give that a try.
I've got Atlas on my Hunq and A23 on my MAP. My next wheelset will be
another with A23s in
Of note: Eroica California now allows bikes with aero brake levers so long
as they don't have built in shifters:

Bar-end shifters are ok too, so long as they don't index.
Personally, my impression of the event depends on how I consider it:

I'm running them on Atlas, the polished version. The look is stunning and
I'm working on losing the 100g myself... :-)

I'm getting a new frame built up, it's designed for wide tires, and will
never see less than 38mm Soma C-Lines, but will start off with those lovely
new 44mm 700c Compass Snoquamie Pass gumwalls. The Velocity Page shows me
that Dyads are 24mm external and 18.6mm internal, and have 525g mass,
I am pretty sure bar end shifters are allowed, since they were quite common
in the peloton in the '40s and '50s, if not '60s.
Yep; http://www.eroicagaiole.com/regulation.
Also, Rivendells too have to meet the criteria; mine as presently ridden,
would not.
It's all a bit precious, though I can
Any lugged steel bike is approved, including Rivs and a new Bianchi created
just for the event. You're right about non-aero levers, clips-and-straps and
dt. I don't think bar-ends are allowed.

And yes, Panracer did at one time at least make a 559 X 32/1.25 Pasela,
which I used for years in non-Tourguard form. Alas, the last time I looked,
only the Tourguard was available in that size. Decent tires for the price,
but not IMO worth 1/4 of the cost of the Elk Pass!

You are right: 1.5 or 38. However, if they measure similarly to the Elk
Passes, with a 9+% shortfall, then perhaps they may measure close to 32 on
a 23 mm rim?
Not that *I* am complaining about the perfect 559 28 mm tire!

When I reach Hampsten's stature, I'm sure they'll let me enter a

Thanks. One reason I chose the folding collection is that I want sets for
each of 3 bikes, and it was much cheaper to by the folding sets than to buy
3 each of the individual keys I need, 3 or 4 depending on the bike (5, 4,
2.5 or 3 for Shimano pedal tension, and a 6 for the 2 with NItto quill

There is no "new" thought or idea, no one owns them either . Ponder
+1 on Weras...

Patrick,
I imagine the casing is better, and maybe even the rubber compound, but I'm
not excited to see that Pasela tread on a Compass tire.

I like kalloy products. Not specifically tried that stem but never had an issue
with any of their products. If I'm not mistaken seatposts that come on Sam's
and Chevoits are kalloy. Surly specs their stuff to. Not bad endorsments from a
durability perspective. I'd use it in a heart beat and not
exactly, expected better from you of all people garth :p

Don't let the price fool you or sway you, thinking either high price makes
for better quality than lesser price, these stems have been around a long
time and are just fine,

They are labeled 1.4", so I guess 36 as most. If small, perhaps they'll be
a true 32? 32 will fit under my fenders.
I would jump, except that these are not the extra lights, and that I am so
happy with the ~28 mm Elk Passes.

OHO. Oh, no. No no no no; no old mountain bikes; this is very, very
strictly Old School Roadie: no clipless, no aero levers, and I think that
shifting is limited to dt and bar ends. Wool and leather and steel highly
preferred. Approved bikes date from the early 20th century thru the '70s,
IIRC.

i've gone the opposite way as well. at one time, all my bikes had
albatross-like bars, which was a recoiling from uncomfortable drops on more
raceish bikes. ended up trying 46cm noodles on my sam set up at saddle
height with comfortable brake hoods and it has been dreamy on my wrists,
easy on
ive used kalloy stems and seatposts on a number of budget bikes over the
years. never had a problem. i dont think i ever took those bikes on any
crazy trails or anything, so they werent pushed to any limits. aesthetics
are what you would expect. i actually think they are a pretty good deal
Hi Bunch,
I have a Nitto dirt drop stem on my QB with NItto 135 and I of course love
everything about it...
That said, I'm building up a slightly-budgety all-rounder from an '85 Trek
850. I want it all black. Because all my other bikes are silvery. And just
because.
Question, how are Kalloy
I had to look up Eroica. Sounds like a fun scene. Especially if they
include 80's MTB's!

Compass couldn't give me the information, doubtless due to caution about

listmember can do so?
There just *might* be room under fenders on the '03 for this 1.4"

I'm even adding a bar bag to my go-fast this winter - hopefully Ely is

This depends on how one uses the bicycle. I have been using Albatros
bars on my Saluki with a big tall motorcycle style mirror on the left side
and sitting upright for commuting in traffic, however, last year I picked
up a LeTour and experimented with the drop bars. This bicycle is lighter
