The site has improved some in the last couple days. I suspect staff bikes will

Re: [RBW] Re: RBW Website - Riv Staff bike builds

2016-11-23 Thread Scott Loveless
There's always https://www.flickr.com/groups/rbwstaffbikes/

Didn't they do this with the previous site redesign, only bringing
back the staff bikes due to "popular demand" or some such? I'd
imagine they have priorities related to running a business and
pictures of their own bikes will resurface when someone has a slow day
or two.

[RBW] Joe Appaloosa versus Atlantis

2016-11-23 Thread Joe Bernard
My Joe has Choco-Moose now, but it started with Noodles on a 10cm Technomic.
Either seems a perfect fit, which is my favorite attribute of this bike:
there's a bunch of different bikes in there, depending on what parts you throw
at it.

Speaking of parts, I'm going eRiv again. My Clem was fun with the full
pedal-assist-plus-throttle treatment, but realistically it was too heavy to
ride without the juice. This time I'm going with a low power front hub, small
battery, and a simple button to push for a slight boost up my monster hill. I
want my Appaloosa to still be a bicycle, with a lightweight kit I can easily
swap out for the original wheel.

Sheesh! Now I want a Roadeo/Roadini *and *an Atlantis-surrogate! And can't

Actually, the 12mm axle might be the one you need as this description
includes Mirage rear hub with cartridge bearings:

   - Also known as Fulcrum R5-120, identical part
   - Fits Campagnolo Bullet, pre-2013 Scirocco, pre-2014 Vento and Khamsin
wheels including CX variants, Campagnolo Mirage, Veloce and 2007/8 Centaur
hubs, Fulcrum Red Wind and pre-2014 Racing 4,
   - For use with Fulcrum and Campagnolo wheels that use 12mm axles and
   sealed cartridge bearings
   - For use with Shimano and SRAM 8, 9, 10 and 11 speed cassettes
   - Replaces FH-BU015X, WH-KX9 and R5-020

Note - Fulcrum and Campagnolo are related. I believe Fulcrum is Taiwan made
Campy parts.

link:
https://www.amazon.com/Fulcrum-Campagnolo-Freehub-Shimano-Cassettes/dp/B00BNZZ678/ref=sr_1_2?s=outdoor-recreation=UTF8=1479934913=1-2=campagnolo+freehub+body+for+shimano

So, the Total Cycling hub at $41 is a great deal, if it fits! Good Luck!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco v2 has landed!

2016-11-23 Thread Jeff Lesperance
As a follow-up to my problematic wide tires on narrow rims postulation, I
acquired some XT/Mavic A319 wheels for Rosco today, adding ~5mm of rim
width over the Open Pros, and did some measuring. I just posted for
informational purposes on the iBob list, though I'll share here for the few
of you who might not be subscribed there:

Friends - I recently built up a Rivendell Rosco Bubbe v2 with the only 700c
wheelset that I had on hand, which featured Mavic Open Pro rims. I knew for
sure that these were not an appropriate rim for the Compass Snoqualmie Pass
tires that I intended to run, but I assessed that I've done far dumber
things than run too-wide tires on too-narrow rims and decided this dumb
decision probably wouldn't result in my death...

So, I'm here to report that the 700x44 Snoqualmie Pass tires measure
~39.5mm on the ~19mm external width / ~14mm internal width Open Pro rims
and they fit beautifully, errr, with nary much margin for error under the
SKS 45mm cream longboard fenders (see previous comment about dumb things)...

I'm also here to report that I visited my LBS today, Silver Cycles in
Silver Spring, MD, and they had a Shimano XT/Mavic A319 wheelset that asked
to come home with me for Thanksgiving, so I obliged. The A319 measures in
at ~24mm external / ~19mm internal width, and the Snoqualmie Pass tires now
measure in at ~41.5mm and the 45mm longboard fenders are a bit more of a
liability.

Oh, in both cases, for measurement purposes, I inflated the tires to
~60psi, which is a higher pressure than I would typically run these
luscious tires.

Apparently, there's also a Campy freehub body for shimano
8/9/10 cassette for a 12mm axle too:

One option is to replace the Campy freehub body with one designed for
Shimano cassettes. Not sure if it works with a Veloce rear hub, but for
the Record/Chorus/Centaur with the oversized axle, but there are a couple
of options:

For standard 17mm axle, you will probably need this one:

http://www.totalcycling.com/en/Campagnolo-Freehub-Body-For-Shimano-891011-Speed---R1137139-17mm-alloy-axle/m-19018.aspx

For 9mm axle, it might be this one:

http://www.totalcycling.com/en/Campagnolo-Freehub-Body-For-Shimano-8910-Speed---R1134955-9mm-Steel-Axle/m-19019.aspx

You should verify which one will work with your specific hub if interested.
Good Luck!

these are an expensive solution but if you want to use a Shimano hub
with a Campy drivetrain.

Another solution is the Jtek Shiftmate, way cheaper. Just use a
Shimano hub and cassette with your Campy shifter and derailer.

And I understand Campagnolo Ero 11 will shift a Shimano 9 speed
drivetrain (i.e., Shimano hub, cassette & derailleurs) perfectly with no
adapters required.

Re: [RBW] Need help choosing rear hub for Soma San Marcos

2016-11-23 Thread Jim Bronson
Buy a NOS older Campy hub, 9-11 are compatible. Pre-2006 are especially
good. Campy made lots of silver ones.

geez I sold mine on this group way too cheap, after checking eBay. Had a
Chorus and a Record hub, pre 2006 silver. The Chorus had only been ridden
a few miles.

[RBW] Re: Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-23 Thread Marc Irwin
I'm fond of my '87 Trek 560. It's from "back in the day" when they had to
sell the Trek brand and still produced Reynolds frames with branded lugs by
hand in the USA. I remember thinking "Wisconsin? That's not even close to
Italy!" I've updated most of the components, went to 700C wheels so bigger
tires fit and had it powdercoated but I still like to ride it and it keeps
me from coveting a newer road bike.

[RBW] Re: FS ::: Mountain Bike Brake Levers, Suntour & Sachs - NEW

2016-11-23 Thread Kai Vierstra
Is there any reach adjustability on the Dia-Compe levers? I'm currently using
the ugliest Avids ever, but they've got adjustable cable pull and adjustable
reach, but carry the terrible price of horrifically gross looking.
I'm still dreaming of a lever that has adjustable angle/pitch to the bar, that
could mount way forward into the curve on some boscos without splaying out the
side too much, but I think that's a pipe dream.

Re: [RBW] Need help choosing rear hub for Soma San Marcos

2016-11-23 Thread Dan McNamara
The VO hub is a good option.

The White Industries T11 is another - although more expensive. Ben's Cycles has
the silver campy version for about $240.

Ben's also has a Miche hub set with a Campy rear - don't know anything about
that set but might be worth research.

You could run a Shimergo setup but you will loose minimum one gear depending
how you set it up. I have a Campy ergo 10-speed shifting a Shimano 8-speed
cassette on one bike. It shifts great front and rear. Might be worth research.

[RBW] Re: Need help choosing rear hub for Soma San Marcos

2016-11-23 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Velo Orange has some nice hubs and prebuilt wheels available that would
match the campy look nicely. They have an option at checkout to select a
shimano or campy freehub body. If you already have a Tiagara wheel and you
like the finish you could always just swap out the freehub body only (VO
sells them, just be sure to remove the existing body in your tiagara hub to
confirm it's the same configuration).

Or! Get some Silver hubs from Riv...although I am not seeing them on the
site...

Re: [RBW] Need help choosing rear hub for Soma San Marcos

2016-11-23 Thread Belopsky
o..Ashwath looks like you got some reading to do!

Shimano wont work with Campy. I think there are ways to go about it where
it does, but basically just don't. I think you need special cables as well
for Campy bits?

Rear is 130mm. There are many hubs that support Campy, but they have to be
Campy specific.. Are you building your own wheels?

Thanks Ryan,
I have a feeling I'm going to be ignoring the other bikes this winter,

Thanks for the heads up on the Holdsworth. The Holdsworth La Quelda looks

[RBW] Re: FS ::: Mountain Bike Brake Levers, Suntour & Sachs - NEW

2016-11-23 Thread ascpgh
I'm out of flat bar bikes right but now those are some really nice Dia
Compe Advantage-5 SL levers (basic A5s didn't have the holes).

Cold forged levers, tidy clamp, pared down design to do the job. Grant put
them on the MB-0, which showcased some other really great componentry. Made
it contemporaries look like slightly refined, but still oversized and heavy
Tomaselli motorcycle levers. Unleashed a tide of lightweight boutique
levers.
