Re: [RBW] Re: Do I need tire fatter than 650B x 42?

2017-04-14 Thread Orc
Nice!  A set of black Pari-Motos would go really well with that machine;
have you tried them?

For comparison:

(No pump that day; I was out picking up a pair of chainstays for a new
frame and wasn't sure if they'd foul and then knock the pump loose.
Pari-Motos on this thing because it's got fender spacing for Nokian A10s
and Confreries look a little undersized under fenders this large.)

Re: [RBW] Phil BB advice/experience needed

2017-04-14 Thread Patrick Moore
You are very welcome. I too was tempted to stick the 130 symmetrical on a
support and hit the left side of the spindle with a hammer, but I'm glad I
waited the 10 days or so required to get the thing back to Phil, adjusted,
and back to me.

FWIW, I've got 13100 miles on one Phil, almost 11K on another -- these are
the lightweight ti spindle ones, and neither removed from their respective
frames since initial installment -- and both are still smooth. I think
that, if I were doing a global trek, I'd choose a SKF, but otherwise, I
have no qualms about Phil bb assemblies or hubs.

Re: [RBW] Phil BB advice/experience needed

2017-04-14 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Patrick,

That is good advice and certainly good information. I know there are ways
I see mentioned about a DIY change in the offset but I am resisting that.
I would much rather have PW do it right. I have another crankset and BB I
can use in the meantime.

Alas, I only have the 130 symmetrical so I am no help there. I do know
what you mean though about the excess clearance on the non-drive side. The
small offset I need on the drive side will certainly not fix that issue.
That said, working on the drive side and correctly, while still using the
stash parts, will be a great thing.

Big thanks for the help! Much appreciated...

Bob

2017-04-14 Thread Patrick Moore
I expect it will work, but it looks as if you need an offset 130. Phil will
do that for you for a small fee, plus postage: IIRC, $10.

When I switched the Matthews to a Logic, I ordered a symmetrical 130 and
found myself in your situation, I sent it back for offsetting, and wala,
the problem, as Inspector Clouseau would say, is solve'd.

Actually, I could have, after all, used a 127.5 with arms skimming the
stays by 3 mm; if you have an offset 127.5, I'll trade for my offset 130.
My right arm skims, but the left has free air left over.

Patrick Moore, whose widest Phil was a custom 145 symmetrical for using a
Pro 5 Vis on a frame that took 60s with fenders and room for mud.

The Zefal frame pumps are pretty good pumps, and they aren't the theft
magnets the new(ish) SKS semi-mini floor pumps is, but the one I have takes
something around 100 pumps to get a Pari-Moto up to 30 psi, which is just

But, yes, I concede this point: if I had SKS semi-mini floor pumps for all

[RBW] Phil BB advice/experience needed

2017-04-14 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Since I trust people here more than most, I decided I would ask instead oh
assuming or hoping...

I am installing a Sugino AT triple (50/38/26) on a Joe. I am using a
130mm Phil Wood bottom bracket that I happened to have in the stash,
knowing that something even more exotic (127.5/+5?) is called out but
thinking 130 symmetric would be fine. I am a pragmatist, what can I say...

That said, I have installed the BB and cranks and to make it all work the
drive side cup (Phil) is only half way in, so let's say 4 out of 9 actual
threads showing, 4.5-5 threads in the frame. The question is, is that
enough? Would you trust that? I think it is probably at the edge but also
ok - but I am looking for confirmation. If it is not so ok, I have other
options, though not as desirable.

Any experience or knowledge of such things?

All help appreciated...

[RBW] Road Bike with 1x10 or 1x11

2017-04-14 Thread Eric Karnes
I have a 1x9 drivetrain on my AHH. 40t up front and an old ultegra 11-28
cassette in back. I really like it. Works great on the roads and trails around
Philly. But I'm a pretty lazy shifter, so even when I had a FD, I never used
it. I also highly recommend the narrow/wide 1x chainrings from Wolf Tooth. Very
nice and completely eliminate dropped chains.

2017-04-14 Thread Garth
Do a 1x8 or 9 if that's what you're used. More gears is not necessarily
better than less. Being able to spin at different cadences in a given gear
is a great thing . I used to be a shiftaholic, trying to maintain a
certain cadence all the time. Not anymore, I really just don't care to
shift if I don't really have to. But hey, I am still using 6 and 7 speed
freewheels and the times I tried an 8 sp. cassette wheel it felt like one
cog way too many. After using 6 even 7 seems a bit much.

[RBW] Re: Lovely Spring Day Cruise New Appaloosa

2017-04-14 Thread 'mlpessar' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks for the positive remarks. I agree with you Joe. I too find that the
bike looks great in each of the colors Rivendell has chosen. It is pleasing
to the eye and within the limits of sanity would likely look good in most
if not all shades. Of paramount importance, it is a joy to ride.

[RBW] Re: Road Bike with 1x10 or 1x11

2017-04-14 Thread JohnS
Hello Chris,

I have a 1x7 on Salsa Casseroll, works great. My advise would be to have
the chain ring align with the center cog. That way the chain deflection is
minimized. Also try to use a chain ring size which would work with the
center cog to give you a comfortable cruising gear. This way you have an
even division of higher and lower gears from it. I'm using a 14-34 cassette
and a 44 chain ring.

Good luck,
JohnS

Re: [RBW] Re: kindness

2017-04-14 Thread Sky Coulter
Thanks guys. Hey Patrick, i didn't mean to call you - i leave my phone in my
scrubs pocket and have a bad habit of pocket dialling when i run.

My friend's name was John Lee; we worked together in the ER for a while and in
2011 when i was prepping to bike across canada he taught me a bit about bike
maintenance. When i returned enthused, i moved into a place quite close to his
and he'd come over quite regularly to have a glass of whiskey and wrench on
bikes or just chat.

I suspect 99% of his interactions on list were probably to buy things. And he
had no qualms about trying to get a price down. But he was one of the most
generous people i've ever met; he'd fight to get a price down, then give the
part away to a friend.

Anyway, i appreciate all the positivity.

Thanks,

Sky

My deep condolences for the loss of your friend, Sky. Your friend was part
of this group? So often people just go their own ways, so we don't always
know why. May I ask who your friend was?

You are spot on! This is an amazing group with amazing people who interact
with genuine love, even when things get a bit testy at times (often
correlated with winter grouchies). It is this groups fault that I invested
in bike tools and took up (most of) my own wrenching -- another form of
therapy for my bludgeoned brain. How wonderful that yesterday I heard a
creak and groan in my drive train, then this morning I tightened the BB
non-drive side cup, and the complaining was gone, and I still did a great
ride into the sloppy snow-melt mud singletrack fringes and hang out in a
mountain meadow for a wee while before running errands on the way home.
What a delight!

With abandon,

[RBW] Re: kindness

2017-04-14 Thread Jonathan D.
As someone new to the group I really enjoy the conversations and even some of
the family like conversations. These conversations are nice escape from the
other things I tend to read on the Internet about modern affairs.

On the negative side this group convinced me to purchase a more expensive bike
then I planned. (Sarcasm) Even the members who were trying to sell me a used
bike encouraged me to buy the more expensive new Joe Appaloosa. I kind a wish
I could've bought both. I am very excited for my new Joe Appaloosa, and even
though it's the most expensive bike I've ever bought, I like to think that part
of my purchase goes to support the ideas espoused by Rivendell and Grant
Peterson, and supporting these type of discussions.

Thanks for the tip. I checked with them and a few other dealers and no
luck. Might just wait around for it to come back in stock. Or go with the
grey, which is beautiful, but the olive would look really nice with a
silver App.

Thanks everyone for your inputs!

Bill made a great point. If I'm limiting myself to 42mm tire right off
the bat, what's the point of picking Appaloosa.

After reading all the opinions I've decided to start with 650bx50 and go
lower if I ever see a reason for my typical rides.

Besides, Philip made me a truly irresistible offer on brand new Schwalbe
Almotions! Thank you Philip!

[RBW] Re: threaded fork crown rod breakage on my Nitto 32F... punishment or a sign? Also, it can be salvaged, right?

2017-04-14 Thread Garth
You actually could salvage it but the cost to do so would be pretty high,
if your bike has fork crown top bolts, that is. See the threaded holes on
the side, I assume they are the same as on all Nitto racks. You would have
to buy 2 rods and 2 bolt/nuts, then attach the rack to the 2 bolts on the
fork crown. Considering the nut/bolts are $12 or so each and the rods $14 a
pair plus the shipping cost you're in for over $40.

You could just put a shout out here as someone may have some nut/bolts and
rods not used. Never hurts to ask.

2017-04-14 Thread Bill Lindsay
I vote for retiring that rack and setting up a new rack. If that center
strut fails again, your load drops right into your front wheel, locking it
up almost instantly and will put your skull on the ground hard. It
probably won't fail, but I feel the same about repairing a broken front
rack as I do about repairing a broken front fork. All the parts that keep
your head off the ground by not-failing, those are the parts that it is
worth being conservative over.

Thanks you both.

Jeremy, the bolt broke a half-inch beyond the bottom of the nut. There was
no washer or spacer installed between the nut and the fork crown; however
the nut fits perfectly inside the recessed part of the mount and lays flat
against the crown. There is a spacer on the front side of the crown.

I ride a lot of unpaved roads and trails on this bike, and often with
things in the basket attached to this rack. Perhaps it had been loose for a
while and became stressed over time and under weight?

[RBW] Re: FS-Joe Appaloosa

2017-04-14 Thread RichS
Hi Gossamer. Congratulations on the sale of your Appaloosa!

Since your post has generated discussion about fit in general and your
mention of the Atlantis as a possible replacement for your Joe App, I'd
like to relate my Atlantis experience and another aspect of the sizing
conundrum. I have a 53cm model with Noodles. Wonderful bike, solid, stable,
just as advertised and as other owners in the group have confirmed. Reach
to the bars is fine but I've always been a bit uneasy about the standover.
It's in the Riv recommended zone but still. . . This is significant since
my Sam (purchased after the Atlantis) hits all the right notes and
therefore colors my impression of the Atlantis' size.

I had been looking at some early literature on the Atlantis and discovered
this note (paraphrased): "For male riders, if you plan to ride fat tires
(presumably the max. size) consider going down one size." To date I haven't
used a tire in the 50mm range but I'd like to go there knowing this will
decrease my standover height and possibly discourage use of a larger tire.

Just food for thought as you consider your next purchase. Best of luck!

Regards,
Richard

[RBW] Re: threaded fork crown rod breakage on my Nitto 32F... punishment or a sign? Also, it can be salvaged, right?

2017-04-14 Thread Jeremy Till
A couple of questions:

Where exactly did the threaded rod break? It sounds like it broke just
where the nut tightened against the back of the fork crown?

Another thing I'm wondering about is if you had some kind of spacer to fill
up the fork crown hole in back. Most Riv crowns, including the one on the
QB (I used to own one) are drilled for a recessed caliper brake mount, so
the hole on the back of the crown has a wider diameter than the hole on the
front. Riv suggests using some kind of spacer on the fork crown strut to
take up this space and give the nut a wide, flat surface to tighten
against. They used to sell a spacer specifically for this purpose, which I
believe was actually a PVC grommet originally intended for adapting presta
valves to rims drilled for schraeder valves.

My wild speculation is that the nut on the back of the crown was loose for
a while and the slight banging around damaged and/or bent the strut right
under the nut, enough that attempting to tighten the nut just broke it off.

In terms of repair, I would see if I could find a frame builder who does
rack work to braze in a new threaded rod. Not sure how it would compare
cost wise to just buying a new rack, though.

Re: [RBW] Re: Do I need tire fatter than 650B x 42?

2017-04-14 Thread Garth
I understand the seeming conundrum. What is the best tire?...is an endless
question. It seems the best tire is one you literally forget about, you forget
about wondering about it, you just pay no attention to it. Well, what is
stopping me from just forgetting about it, regardless of the tire ? Nothing is.
Lokking for the tire , or bike or any thing to "make my life" somehow great is
a quest of futility, and we all know it. It is not about he tire, or the bike,
or the thing, it is not really about anything in all honesty. This reminds me
of the Tazmanian Devil cartoon character, he gets so worked up about nothing he
seems to wreck everything for himself. Hah ! Take a break from nothing and
just enjoy life, right now, it's not like I have another now to go to you know.

I've found 3.5 advantages

1) lighter
2) slightly faster
3) less casing flop when tire pressure gets low
3.5) easier to build a frame when I don't have to bend the chainstays to
fit around a fat tire

[RBW] Re: Do I need tire fatter than 650B x 42?

2017-04-14 Thread stevef
You'd be better off choosing tires based on your needs, then picking the
fenders that suit them. 42's would be fine for mainly paved and smoothish
dirt routes. Bigger would be advantageous if you'll ride more and rougher
dirt routes...

2017-04-14 Thread Philip Kim
Ash, I already kind of told you my plans, but I would just go larger
fenders - why limit yourself if you don't have to?

I think 42s are great for roads, but I found larger tires greatly benefit
in terms of comfort. the roads around DC are full of potholes and chipped,
and the larger tires have greater benefit there.

[RBW] Re: A Homer Hilsen slight color change?

2017-04-14 Thread Philip Kim
Yeah I just asked via instagram. Like Bill mentioned, it seems the color is
a lighter blue than when the frames were made by Toyo.

The lighter blue has stayed the same since they brought production into the
US. I assumed that the blue was a flat light blue, but it seems to get
different tints with different lighting. Very cool!

Digital photos have vastly improved in quality and convenience, but it
seems I'm always wanting more!

[RBW] Re: kindness

2017-04-14 Thread Philip Kim
Mhmm! well said! i think it's great that so many listers here are actually
invested in the list and fellow listers, and act accordingly. I don't know
how many private emails i've sent you all asking about this model or that
model, and always get the most helpful responses with pictures and
measurements, ride reports etc. I in turn try to do the same whenever I can
with my own pictures, measurements, and my closest explanations as
possible, and it's enjoyable to share my experiences and try to help others.

It's especially enjoyable when there is a fairly new lister who is hemming
and hawing about plunking down a lot of money for their first rivendell and
asking for advice on which model, and when everyone gives their own
opinions but always ends with "do it you won't regret it!". then a couple
of months go by, and the same person writes a post about how they just
purchased a riv and how awesome it is!

Also the amount of trust on this forum vastly sometimes vastly outweighs
the trust i have in various face to face interactions in areas of my life...

[RBW] Re: kindness

2017-04-14 Thread Bob Lovejoy
+1... and I do absolutely agree. Well said Sky.

In a fractured world, it is a real gift to just talk, listen and learn
about things seemingly as simple as bicycles and riding. I feel the same
regarding it helping restore my faith in people and the world, as I need
that reminder, that reinforcement. I have always had that faith but it is
tested now more than ever and I have started to realize just how critical
it is to our lives.

Just thinking as I write this... It is an accepted truth I believe among
mathematicians and other scientists that the more simple and elegant a
reasoned solution, the more likely it is to be a real clue to truth. It
occurs to me things as simple as biking, hiking, sharing thoughts with
others, listening, contributing, learning... all of these are simple and
possibly even elegant solutions to many seemingly complex things that tear
at the world.

Sky - I am sincerely sorry for the passing of your friend and I hope that
the memory of your shared conversations, rides and adventures give you many
reasons and chances to smile. We hopefully live our lives, at least in
moments, in ways worthy of quiet celebration by our friends and family and
in missing and remembering your friend, you do indeed celebrate and honor
their life.

Here's to a good day, great rides, learning, listening, remembering...

Seems like 650B x 42 is the widest tire I can go if I install P50,
so I bought a pair of Pari Moto 650b x 42.

Before I commit to P50 I wanted to ask the experts here if I
should keep an option open for wider tires and go with P55.

To be contrary, I'd suggest narrower tires.

Why would you want to do that? What benefit or advantage would you get
from doing so?

My fat 650b tires are 38 Pari-Motos, which are perfectly happy at
speed on loose gravel roads, but so are the Confrérie des 650B tires I
ride on my faster 650b machines (and I have a pair of Schwalbe Ones @
650x25b that are waiting for me to shuffle wheelsets so I can get them
fitted on a pair of rims that can support 80-90psi; I do not expect
those will ride very fast on loose gravel, but the target machine is
for short brevets on mainly paved roads.)

Confréries fit very nicely under a 50mm fender and don't look
obviously undersized there (I ran them under some reradiused 700c V-O
Zeppelins on a couple of machines over the course of three years, only
stopping when the Zepps started to fracture at the rear brake bridge)
and 38 Pari-Motos (or CdlVs, or even the old PNW regional default of
Hetres) look just right .

I'm about 6'1" and weigh between 170-190 pounds depending on how
obsessively I'm riding, so I'm not exactly a featherweight.The
only thing that might make it easier for me to ride (relatively)
narrow tires is that I shove my handlebars between 5-6 inches lower
than my saddle so I float myself between the bars and the saddle
except when I'm falling over with exhaustion; if you're going for a
riv fit, your weight balance might be back far enough so that what I
consider ballon tires won't give you enough float to compensate for
the constant rumble of loose gravel or crappy city streets.

Love the clip. What's funny is that Andy Warhol (the one of the other Andys

Inevitable" events, a literal sentiment not rare to this forum. He filmed
and collected screen tests of regulars at his Factory:

Warhol reiterates his fascination with individuals and effort to capture
the actual experience of living, which isn't too far from the common vein
here either.

Every time I've considered this question on a bike I've ended up trying bigger
tires... I'd max the fender size if you are even considering wider.

I do have an used pair of Vee tires that are either 2.0 or 2.1 by 650B that you
can have for shipping, pm me if you are interested. The have a light knob
