[RBW] Re: The Hubbuhubbuhs are here!

2017-05-08 Thread Patrick Cronin
Many thanks for posting these pics. I've been having sage envy and blue
regret after seeing the first and even latest photo from Grant. I'm now
really excited for this blue. Can't wait to put it up against the original
Hunqapillar blue. Riv 'dealer', Gravel & Grind just took my deposit for
parts and found a NOS xtr v-brakeset, which should look smart on the blue.
Curious about the Paul Klamper, as I've never used.

What did Riv say about the steerer length? It looks astronomic in height.
Anyone else have thoughts about an ideal height for the Medium w/
bosco-bullmoose?

Cheers,

Patrick

[RBW] FS: Practically new 59cm Clem Smith Jr. H

2017-05-08 Thread Michael Holloway
I'm looking to sell my very lightly used 59cm Clem Smith Jr. H, mustard
color.

Looks like this, though I'm happy to send you a phone snapshot if you're
interested:

https://www.rivbike.com/products/clem-smith-jr-h-style-complete?variant=2841281

I ordered it late last summer and took it out for a couple of rides around
town before it got too cold for this freezecat to go riding around. Great,
quirky bike, sprightly but with a relaxed riding position, but it's just a
wee bit too big for me. (For reference, I'm 5' 11-1/2". Rivendell says
riders for this size are typically 5' 10" to 6' 4", and if I were you I'd
be more confident about it if I were on the higher end of that range.)

I paid $1500 and I'd part with it for $1250.

Also willing to sell the frameset alone for $800.

Thanks for looking!

wheelset for $750 plus shipping or $2000 for both bikes...my email is:

Mine came with neither kickstand plate nor any fork eyelets (other than

for low rider rack. Also kickstand plate. Not hard to get done.

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA 53cm atlantis on ebay - $800

2017-05-08 Thread R Shannon
Hi Shoji:

Thank you for your insight on the RTPs. Your riding is identical to mine. After
I sent my e-mail I realized the RTPs could raise my saddle to an uncomfortable
height. As much as I'd like to try these tires the saddle height and reduced
standover gives me pause.

Widest tire I've run to date is the Compass 1.75 on Synergy rims. A short lived
650b experiment was a no go for the reasons mentioned above.

Thanks again for your time and feedback!

Best regards,
Richard

[RBW] Re: PSA 53cm atlantis on ebay - $800

2017-05-08 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Rich,
I have RTP on my Hunqapillar. Front is mounted on Atlas, Rear is mounted on
Aeroheat. They measure ~50 - 52mm at 20 - 30 psi (f/r) for my 160# +
bike+gear. It's mainly used as a Boston-area commuter on streets and dirt
paths.

They are noticeably faster than Big Bens, which I liked a lot. Finding the
right pressure was a problem initially. When pressure is low, the tires can
be squirmy. I also had a few pinch flats in trying to get the right
pressure.

I've since used latex tubes. I like them for the speed and quality of ride.
I think they are less prone to pinch flats, but that's anecdotal.

I would recommend giving them a try, particularly if you ride mainly road
or hard dirt.

2017-05-08 Thread Tim Gavin
My ex-gf put Horizons on her Surly Straggler 650b build. Hers measured 49
mm wide on 30 mm Velocity Blunt rims.

So, they would probably measure the stated 47 mm on a 25 mm rim.

I agree with masmojo that the Byway looks like even better, with shoulder
knobs for occasional deep gravel.

2017-05-08 Thread masmojo
You would ask that 2 days after I've taken them iff the bike they were on. Of
course it will depend on the width of tge rim a little, but I will say they
don't run small! On a wider rim they could be closer to 49mm.
I will most likey put them on my Clementine, but probably not for a few days
(or weeks), depends on if curiosity gets the better of me.

Re: [RBW] Re: Beautiful Atlantis on EBay

2017-05-08 Thread Joe Bernard
Lee: For some of us the buying and selling is part of the hobby. Speaking for
myself, I've always been into bikes as much for the mechanical aspect as for
the riding itself. Some folks really just want something that works for the
riding they're into, and tend to stick with what works. Others are into all the
different possible bike experiences out there, and buy and sell as they put
each new interesting experience on the road, then move on to the next one.

I'm in the second group. I probably fiddle with bikes as much as ride them, and
have a slightly insatiable appetite for changing things up just to see what
it's like. I started with the lugged steel Bridgestone-to-Rivendell progression
and always end up back here, but I've owned all manner of bikes including: a
titanium road bike, aluminum disk brake road bike, Dutch bike, recumbents,
recumbent trikes, mini velos, folders, and most recently a dabble with ebikes.

I tend not to get attached to any of them and don't desire to have an huge,
unmanageable collection (which I can't afford to do anyway), so I sell bikes
I'm not riding much to the next rider. It's fun!

I am running a Big Ben in the back & a 2.3 Kenda knobby in the front. I tried
BBs frint & back initially & then changef both to 2.3 knobbies, but the
Clementine is such a big bike that 2 really fat tires felt sort of ponderous.
The knob on the front gives a little "float" over soft stuff & obstacles, while
the narrower BB in the back rolls a little easier on pavement. I've been
running this combo for awhile and I might be inclined to drop the front knobs
down to 2.1, but it's a minor quibble.
Actually, I've recently acquired some WTB Horizon 47's & I think I'll probably
go with those, because they are plenty wide, they are folding & are pretty
light.

F(anyone's)I; Schwalbe One 650x25b tires on a 650b conversion:

Riv content is, um, the waterbottle is from the Rivendell mothership and
the waterbottle lid is from Rivelo.

I don't think there's a single Rivendell frame that wouldn't look silly
with this wheelset, unless I could hop in a time machine and get a
first-year custom made; You can only imagine how ridiculous these wheels
look under a Rosco (the photos I posted a while back of the Rosco MTM I'm
trying to sell? those tires (Confreries) are huge compared to these) but
they give me buckets of room for fenders on this frame+fork setup.

I concur with Jeff. In my experience, The Pro's Closet has all the good
qualities you'd want from a professional eBay seller, at the price premium
you would expect to pay a professional. The other thing I like about them
is that they appear to stock alot of things I'm interested in seeing, so I
can just browse their store and see lots of stuff I like.

I also like the Bern helmets I have. They have a very sturdy shell which
is good if you are on and off your bike during the day. The roadie helmets

sturdy shell, liner and visor they only weigh a few grams more than my

Bought my Clem off this list with a mismatched pair: knobby WTB Bee Line

and I think the next tires on this bike will be Schwalbe Big Ones in 2.1" -
smooth and supple, from what I hear.

Our friends introduced us to this last game night.

I love my orange canti-Sam but don't want to. I bought it used and my wife
already had a bright orange Public mixte. I've tried talking her into a Riv
Roscoe mountain mixte and Rene's Betty Foy but to no avail. The orange on the
Sam has a beautiful yellowish pearlescent sheen in the sunlight. As much as I
want to repaint to avoid the matchy-match rides with my wife, I just can't do
it.

Guess we'll just have to surrender to fate and get the matching track suits to
complete the ensemble.

[RBW] Re: tires for clem

2017-05-08 Thread Ian A
I was going through this recently, but looking for 26" x 2.3. I was
disappointed to learn that Thunderburts by Schwalbe are no longer available
in the 26" size, but they are still made in the 27.5 version. I have two
bikes that can handle the 27.5 Thunderburts, but haven't tried them yet. I
hope to in the future when I work through my current tire stock (Maxxis DTH
in 26" and Hetre in 650b).
