2017-07-02 Thread Ash A
Thanks Ron. The double kickstand is not my thing. Velcro strap will solve
the problem most of the times.

I am trying to think of solution that can be deployed in like couple of
seconds. For example when I'm at a grocery isle and have to free my hands
for a minute. I'm thinking if I turn the handlebar to the right and tie
the right side of the bar to the seat or something, the bike will be pretty
stable on the kickstand. Something like a retractable phone charging cable
might work :)

John, that's already pretty innovative method to secure the basket!

Initially I was hesitant to commit the basket to Mark's rack with zip ties.
I did it anyway because I had a box full of them. Been two months and

Re: [RBW] Re: Need new shoes

2017-07-02 Thread Tim Butterfield
There is a huge difference between barefoot and any kind of shoe, even the
"barefoot" kind. Some of the more minimalist shoes might let the foot move
more fully, but they are still a restriction. It is similar to moving from
a cast to an ace bandage to a surgical glove. The latter may be the most
minimal, but it is still not as sensitive as bare skin. It also takes a
not insignificant amount of time to build up a foot that is used to
(atrophied from) being in a cast.

As for a bike shoe, I like a sandal when weather allows it. Currently,
that is a Luna Sandal. I consider it as 'portable ground' with only a bare
foot on top of it. But, it protects me from the spikes of my pedals and
from scraping my feet on the ground when coming to a stop.

Michael,

You might look at the Giro Republic shoe. The uppers are pretty nice, they
are walkable (sdp/frog compatible) with replaceable wear pads, they are
lace up (no buckles or velcro) and don't look too goofy to me. I'm very
happy with my pair and frogs.

[RBW] Re: Discs versus calipers

2017-07-02 Thread Garth
Here is a good discussion about rim and disc brakes .
http://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/1092227-braking-stopping-power-question.html

Apparently carbon makes for a poor brake surface for any brake, unless you are
an F1 team and have the unlimited funds to make some discs that do work well in
F1 cars. The rims the pros use today are aluminum based and carbon fused on the
exterior to all but the braking surface. So you get lighter rims than alloy
alone and that still have an alloy braking surface.

While the bike industry would love for pros to adopt their brakes, many have
tried them but prefer rim brakes. When it comes to riders safety they should
always be the ones making the call. So both brakes have their place for certain
riders and conditions. For many though the idea of adding signifigant weight to
the bike trumps the endless argument of better/worse. Yes, for them it is
signifigant. And then there are still some safety concerns of the roters since
they are so sharp and the possiblility of a deep cut, different than a
chainring.

Aa for the perceived power and race strategy, riding a bike is really an art.
It's not just what you ride but how you ride it, your intuition of how and when
and why to take corners let alone everything else about it. Each is unique,
Such is life ! Bravo !

Winning a sprint has nothing to do with brakes of course, and what you see on
TV of close-ups of Kittels discs makes for good advertising and all, as does
the whole race. But discs are pereived as "new and hot", look, "our hero Marcel
rides discs, buy some". Human see human copy that's the theory at
least ahahahahahaa !

longer if you are wearing "barefoot" shoes.

[RBW] FS Garage Sale: 650b SON/White Ind wheelset, Nitto racks, seat posts, stems, more...

2017-07-02 Thread Rob
Time to divest!

All items OBO, and plus the actual cost of the shipping method of your
choice, with local pickup in Seattle preferred. As always, if the price
seems out of line for the item, make me a reasonable offer.

Pics here: https://www.flickr.com/gp/robharrison/HaHy51

*650b Handbuilt Generator Rebuilt Wheelset*. Rebuilt by Tyler at G in
Seattle, with new rims and spokes on older hubs. About 1,500 miles on them.
Hubs:
8-year-old SON20 delux generator front and White Industries Mi5 rear with
new bearings. Rims: new 650B 32H front, 36H rear Compass Cycles Gran Bois
polished; Spokes: new Wheelsmith 2.0-1.7-2.0. They’d be about $985 new not
counting the included rim tape, tubes and Compass Cycle Babyshoe Pass 42mm
tires. Tires are close to being done though. No skewers. $600.

*IRD/Rivendell 8-speed Cassette* 12-34 used with the above, ~1,500 miles.
$20. Get the matching chain, too!

*Wippermann Connex 8-speed Stainless Chain*, 1,500 miles. Lots of life
left! $25.

*Nitto S83 2-bolt Seatpost*. 27.2mm diameter, 200mm long. (50mm shorter
than the standard one you can get from Rivendell for $97.) Shows definite
evidence of use, but still beautiful and functions perfectly. $60.

*Nitto Jaguar SP-72 Track 2-Bolt Seatpost*. Brand new, never been mounted.
27.2mm. Please note: Rail mounting slots are narrower than standard and
ONLY fit track-style saddles. (I missed this!) $50.

*Velo-Orange Cigne Stem* Brand new. Mounted once, never ridden. Highly
polished version. 31.8mm clamp (use shims if you need 'em). 145mm from
bottom of stem to centerline of clamp. Similar to the Cunningham Limp Dick
stem Crust makes, but with a little less extension and the handy removable
face plate. And half the price, for this one. :) $75.

*Nitto Dirt Drop Stem*. 26mm clamp, 80mm extension. Get that bar up to
where you want it! Discolored, but may be polishable. Think of it as
pre-beausaged! I'll include one Nitto shim, which seems to be what it takes
to fit a 25.4mm bar. $20.

*Speedplay Frog clipless pedals*, chromoly version, with cleats. $50.

*Gran Bois Randonneur bars*. About 37mm at the hoods. Just like the current
Compass bars, with the slight upsweep as the bar moves away from the stem
n’ all. SUPER comfortable, just like Jan says. A bit of goo from bar tape,
but I got most of it off. $75.

*Salsa Woodchipper Bars*. One side of one end of the bar was ground off a
bit by the previous owner. Can't see it would make much difference. Ready
for your drop bar mountain bike conversion. $20

Rare *Nigel Smythe Tweed Trunk Sack*, excellent condition, with rain cover.
(Mark's Rack shown for scale, not included, but available separately--also
listed for sale here.) $100.

*Nitto Mark’s Rack*. Designed by Mark at Rivendell, made by Nitto. Super
versatile. Can be mounted on the front to support a randonneur bag, or on
the rear to support a big rear saddlebag. $100.

*Nitto Big Rear Rack*. The older version without the diagonal
cross-bracing. Nicer, IMO $175.

More as I take pictures

[RBW] FS: 52cm Clem H, nicer parts that stock, $1500 w/extras

2017-07-02 Thread Jeremy Till
For sale is one 52cm Clem Smith Jr. complete bike with the H-type frame in
green. This was originally one of the pre-production demo bikes that
Rivendell had for test rides before the first production run. My wife
bought it as an off-road bike but it ended up being a bit too big for her.
My sister-in-law tried it for a while and came to the same conclusion, so
time to pass it on. Full set of pictures here:

https://flic.kr/s/aHskYwHU5D

Because it was a demo bike, it was built up at Rivendell and has a
different and nicer mix of parts than the stock bikes, including:
-FSA Duron sealed bearing headset
-Sugino XD cranks setup as a wide/low double.
-MKS Sneaker Pedals
-The nice cartridge bearing Silver hubs that come on the Appaloosa and Sam
now.
-Shimano CX50 cantilever brakes with the Dia-Compe SS-6 levers.
-Schwalbe Super Moto X tires--light, puffy, fast, dream ride type tires.
Think Super Moto casing with the Big Ben tread.

We've swapped in a pair of fillet brazed 58cm Bosco Bullmoose bars, from a
special batch that had the bar brazed onto the extensions at a slightly
different angle than the stock ones, so that the ends of the bars angle
down a bit more. To me, they feel like they put my wrists in a more
natural position. I'm not sure if Riv ever officially listed them but John
at Rivelo had a pair when I visited last summer and I bought them from him.

My wife also never really liked the "click but not indexed" thumb shifters
that came with it so we swapped in front and rear Shimano Deore index
trigger shifters, as well as a XT front derailleur. The shifting works
great now. There is some marking in the paint on the seatube where the
original Claris front derailleur was, since the XT one mounts lower. I
still have the original shifters if you would prefer those.

Aside from the front derailleur marking, being a test bike the finishing
isn't perfect; their is some cracking on the decals, the right hand one
isn't completely straight, and the headbadge isn't exactly centered.
However, it does have some nice paint touches that don't come on the
complete bikes: the "wings" on the top of the fork crown are painted white,
the "RBW"s on the headtube rings are filled in white, as well as the
windows on the seat lug.

Along with all this I'm throwing in a Nitto Mini Front Rack with matching
Sackville TrunkSack Small bag, as well as a pair of Specialized Ground
Control Sport 650b x 2.1" knobby tires for off-roading with. $1500 for all
of this, and no need to wait for Rivendell to get them back in stock.

I'm located in Sacramento, CA with easy access to the SF Bay Area. If
you're interested but elsewhere let me know and we can talk about shipping.

[RBW] Re: Discs versus calipers

2017-07-02 Thread Patrick Moore
Speaking of discs versus calipers, I've read in more than one place that
discs are useful on racing bikes because they stop faster and therefore let
you go faster into a corner before you have to slow down, so that you can
negotiate corners faster than with calipers.

I daresay that hydraulic discs will jam a wheel still with less finger
pressure than any caliper, but so what -- when you have a tiny rubber
patch, what advantage does a more powerful "squeeze" make?

Note that I'm not figuring carbon fiber rims into the equation here; i
daresay that, since calipers work less well on cf rims than on aluminum
ones, discs on road bikes with cf rims may well be useful in that regard.
But consider the question asked for bikes with aluminum rims.

So, is this bogus, or is it true?

I think discs have advantages over calipers that make them useful for
certain types of riding in certain conditions, but I am very skeptical of
this claim.

Yes to aerodynamics, and it's no trick. This link was provided in the
replies with the video and explains what it was about, with another vid
showing him doing before. Also the ink to the Sky rider who does it, and he
is a very good pro road racer.

Gorgeous bike and terrain! I second Drew's question: Where?

My Hunqapillar is named Shadowfax, for Gandalf's horse, from whom no rider
falls off once he agrees to carry you. Seemed appropriate, given I ride

My Quickbeam is named A’ Ghaoth Airgead, Gaelic for Silver Wind.

I bought it. Reasons: I love steel and the natural steel is beeyoutiful.
The 'ding' doesn't make me cringe. They really did research its frequency
and the pitch is pleasant as a bell can be. It's made in USA. I justified
it when I returned something to the LBS in Ann Arbor and had an
almost-as-much-as-it-cost credit.

[RBW] WTB Used Albastache & Dirt Drop Stem plus question

2017-07-02 Thread Jonathan D.
I am continuing to mess with my bike so. I have a shorter bike and I was
thinking of running the new Albastache bars on it. I have moustache bars (happy
to trade) and like the more relaxed idea of the updates. I have albatross bars
on my Joe but realize it peobably wouldn't work as well on a shorter top tube
road bike and I like the idea of a more aggressive ride. This is for a Romulus
that is on the small side for me but got from a friend.

Also has anyone run the albastache/moustache bars with STI shifters? I would
be curious about your experience and would like to purchase a used 3x9 shifter
as well at some point.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Quickbeam original crankset

2017-07-02 Thread Deacon Patrick
You can buy the original from Rivendell. It's Surgino's triple, set up
guard/40/32. You're almost there here, just ask them to replace the small
ring with a
32:
