It's here
,

in the announcement

for Le S!lver crank.

Basically, it says:

   - S!lver butted Cr-Mo steel tubes, forks, stays
   - Fe 97.3%
   - Cr 1%
   - Mo 0.2%
   - C+Mn+Si+S 1.5%
   - UTS ~103,000 psi
   - Elongation ~10%
   - Yield ~70,000 psi

Kind of in the same ballpark as the evergreen Reynolds 531.

I too had that problem with Tektro 559 brakes and aluminum fenders (forgot
if it's Honjo or VO) on my Wilbury. In the end, it was a struggle between
getting the fenders high enough to run 650x42B tires, and the brake arms
rubbing the fender. The tires won and I spent 20 mins slowly denting the
fender around the brake arms. The brake arms still contact the fenders, but
only when they're fully open with the quick release. Strangely, the rear
matching Tektro 559 brake with the matching fenders offers no such problem.

Patrick, thanks for the advice. i thought of using pennies sewn into the fabric
bottom. Maybe my wife will try this (she’s the seamstress, not me; I can only
use a speedy stitcher sewing awl to ugly effect). Good to hear about your rain.
Here in Portland, we are getting rain today for the first time in months, and
it must be doing wonders for the terrible fires in the area. Just yesterday, so
smokey one didn’t want to venture out doors. Today, blessed rainfall. So Hurrah

FWIW: John, I tried heavy ponchos, including Carradice's canvas Ducksback
and the heavy nylon yellow one; at least here in ABQ, NM, where most of our
rain comes in the summer time, I found them too hot. So I substituted the
lightweight and cheap Campmore bicycle poncho (no longer sold, I
understand) and attached 2 stacks of washers to the rear bottom. Even in
high winds, this keeps the skirts in place.

Our monsoon is still monsooning! Hurrah! It seems to have shifted over the
last 25 years from a late June through August period to a late July through
September period; we've been getting short but heavy downpours during the

[RBW] Riv selection question

2017-09-17 Thread Abcyclehank
Dave,

Nearly everyone here give very good personal advice in my opinion but they can
only deal with the potentially biased information they possess. (We all like
what we have (keep) and which works for us and want to share that with others
which affirms out decisions regarding bikes).
I agree with the majority who advise keeping the Bombadil and the Jones.
I have a 64cm Bombadil, a 24+ Jones, a 68cm Custom Riv, an XL Surly Moonlander,
and a Jumbo (large) Hubbahhubbah; I am 6'6" and my weight fluctuates between
225-255.
The only other big variables are financial and emotional status.
At our SIZE, I find that the Bombadil works just as great as a bike path, daily
run around, errand bike as my 68cm Atlantis did.
I have used my Bombadil set up as a County Road bike with a lighter wheel
set(Mavic Open Pro and Campy Record hubs-8 speed rear and 700x44 Soma
tubular(light)casing tires. I also have a set of heavier duty Velocity DeepV
40h with Campy 8 -Speed OR Record hubs for heavy multiple day touring when my
bike, self, and gear surpasses 330lbs. I so regretted parting with my Bombadil
frame that I persuaded the buyer to trade me for my 68cm Atlantis.
When you sell the Troll and Fargo if you have the strong desire to add a 3rd
bike as a Rando/large man stripped down go fast, more power to you.
Personally I would skip the Sam because I don't think it provides you anything
significantly different than the Bombadil could as a go fast.
Congrats on your absolutely amazing weight loss by the way; if you find
yourself under 240 someday and want to reward yourself(emotionally) with a true
road bike to complement the Jones and Bombadil these would be my 3 top
suggestions: a Hilsen Homer, Ram, or Roadini. Personally I would give each of
them the nod over a Sam because it is their designed role.
If finances were a concern and you want only two bikes max, the Sam comes
back into the equation but I do not sense that is the case.

Sincerely,
Ryan Hankinson

[RBW] Riv selection question

2017-09-17 Thread Joe Bernard
I'm not one to talk someone out of a new Riv, but my guess is a Bombadil is a
great daily rider. Get a Sam or Appa if you really want a "roadier" bike, but I
hope that your quite rare and beautiful Bombadil continues to see daylight.

[RBW] Riv selection question

2017-09-17 Thread Daniel Jackson
I'll agree with Jay here - I think the Sam with 42s would be a great fit for
your needs.

That said - the Jones is so very versatile. I've got a Jones Plus with 2 wheel
sets. One with huge knobbies on velocity Dually rims and another with large
(2.3) slicks on carbon jobbies. And my oh my I race Vermont gravel just fine on
this machine with the light slick wheel setup. Sometimes I dream of using it
for randonneuring it's so darn comfy. At your size I bet such a setup would be
a wonderful daily driver.

One bike; two wheel sets.

[RBW] Riv selection question

2017-09-17 Thread DaveS
I appreciate everyone's help earlier this month solving the elusive n-1
equation. As mentioned I currently have a Bombadil for around town path and
related usage. Not as it was designed as I have the Jones for that heavier duty
riding as a mountain/ trail bike. The responses got me thinking that I was
using the wrong tool for the job, as a "daily rider." This brings me to the
crux of my question- what is the better Rivendell for a large person (280) as a
road bike/trainer, etc? Several folks mentioned the Homer and Sam, but would
they work as a daily driver that is sportier, lighter than the Bombadil? And
would a bigger person crush them, which is why Grant suggested the Bombadil.
Finally I presume that the heavy duty Velocity wheels would switch over should
I move or add another Riv. In closing thank you for the help advice and
direction. It is a good forum, and you all treat each other well which is to be
commended in the din of the online world.

[RBW] Re: Fender Brands (Besides SKS) That Work On A Sam

2017-09-17 Thread Arthur Mayfield
My Sam is a 650b, but i do have Tektro 559's. My tires are Soma Grand
Randonneur 42s, so are probably close to yours in diameter and even wider.
My all-time favorite fenders are Portland Design Works Full Metal Fenders
(city size). They are 700c x 45mm size. I mount them to the brake bolt in
front with a Problem Solvers fender nut, and to the rear brake bridge
directly (adding a leather washer. PDW FMFs are light but quite sturdy and
have possibly the best/safest strut release design on the market. And
they're the quietest fenders I've ever run, my previous experience having
been with Honjos (with Berthoud hardware), SKS, and Planet Bike.

[RBW] Fender Brands (Besides SKS) That Work On A Sam

2017-09-17 Thread RonaTD
Yeah, metal fenders with dual pivot brakes have that problem. I think Bicycle
Quarterly had an article with Peter Weigle showing his installation process. An
important part of it that isn't easy for amateurs is the forming of the area
that goes under the fork crown. Peter has wood mandrels he has made for the
purpose. Like I said, not easy for amateurs! Forming a flat area that extends
forward to the brake arches is something I would like to do on a couple of my
bikes.

A workaround is that you can back out the little brake centering adjustment
screw on the Tektro calipers. That tilts the caliper in a way that adds a bit
more clearance. I have successfully used that approach to fit fenders that
otherwise weren't going to work.

As for the daruma bolt - they are always too long and have to be cut. Getting
the right length is really difficult. When you cut the bolt, put a nut on it
below the cut, then you restore the threads by backing the nut off of it. Best
to use a hacksaw rather than a bolt cutter.
