[RBW] "Winter" clothing help

2017-12-05 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Fred, having lived in Dallas/OKC/Tulsa for over 20 years, I know the primary
winter enemy is wind. If it is wet and blowing a blue norther you're. likely
not riding. I mean, NTX is not Chicago or Boston, so what would be the point.
Most winter precipitation in Dallas is cold rain or sleet in a region infamous
for ice storms.

Anyways, Smartwool/other merino wool underlayers, soft-shell outer layer which
is windproof, breathes well and is very water resistant. Adjust insulating
mid-layer for the wind chill. REI has a nice cycling slack-like soft-shell made
for commuting. Merino wool next-to-skin layers will not develop the body funk
as do synthetics.

Other comments covered hat/gloves/neck gator/shoe-toe covers. I would also add
a hi vis. helmet cover like Sugoi makes. Pearl Izumi Lobster glove/mitt is hard
to beat for weatherproof warmth with dexterity.

Keep some chemical hand/toe warmers in your bag for those mid-day cold fronts.
You can put a partially used hand warmer in a zip lock to stop the chemical
reaction for later use. Cheap insurance for those days you don't have quite
enough insulation!

Cheers, Bill in warmer, less windy Roswell, GA

Re: [RBW] Re: "Winter" clothing help

2017-12-05 Thread Patrick Moore
On little but useful piece of information for winter tops, especially if
you won't wear cycling specific tops, is to make sure that the sleeves are
long enough. I find that many wool pullovers, for example -- but the same
applies to the few ls button up shirts I've ridden in -- have sleeves that
may droop over your palms when you are standing up, but that pull back to
reveal 2" of wrist when your arms are extended in a riding position; and I
personally very much dislike bare, cold wrists.

Well, here in Wisconsin, that doesn't really count as cold :-) In the
40's, I ride to work (8-9 miles each way) in knickers (MUSA or Compass)
over wool boxer briefs, a light wool long-sleeve base layer up top, and a
wind shell or a heavy wool or flannel shirt depending on the wind and
precipitation. In the upper 40's I may or may not use my light weight wool
helmet liner, but by the low 40's that's desired. Also in the high 40's I
might still use light weigh wool gloves, but by the low 40's a heavier
weight glove with wind blocking is better. I don't cover my face (light
weight wool balaclava) until it gets to the mid 20's. I add light wool long
underwear pants under the knickers when it gets to the 30's. When it gets
below freezing I will wear heavier tights under the knickers, or go with
light tights and full nylon pants (like MUSA or a nice old pair of Supplex
pants from Performance about 30 years ago), depending on wind and
precipitation. Footwear - suede bmx style sneakers with quarter height wool
socks until it gets down to the low 40's or wet, then crew socks and low
hiking shoes with eVent lining.

Everyone's milage varies a lot in this area. It definitely requires
experimentation. Get a few key layering items and try combinations. You
definitely don't need bike specific stuff. Flannel or wool shirts are
fabulous for cool biking and go well with knickers or MUSA pants. Smartwool
base layers are versatile and mine have been holding up very well over
time. Ibex is having a closeout sale (sadly, but great opportunity to buy
some things that will last a long time). I find most cycling specific outer
wear ("rain gear") is way too warm until it gets to the 30's. Pit zips and
a 2-way front zipper and rear ventilation help with that. I think my
toughest find is a light weight, water repellent (not completely
waterproof) outer shell for wind blocking and minor rain protection without
over heating. The closest I have to that is an old Supplex wind shell from
Performance, but it's a half zip front with no pit zips, and an odd
"periwinkle" color that isn't ideal.

[RBW] Re: Supple tires and rim fit trouble

2017-12-05 Thread RichS
Brian, this thread may be exhausted but for what it’s worth I built up two sets
of Sun rims this year. 26” Rhyno-Lite and 700c CR-18.

The Rhyno-Lites built up fine and I mounted Compass1.75s on them w/o much
difficulty.

The 700s were a different story. Front wheel went together okay. The rear
tested my patience.
I’ve built a number of wheels but this one was a real challenge. Finally got it
correctly trued and tensioned but like you, mounting the tires (Paselas) was
frustrating. Had to use levers and punctured one tube in the process.

So yes, I feel uneasy about getting a flat on the road. Hoping the tires will
stretch enough to ease the pain.

Best,
Richard

Thanks for all the replies! As always, this group is super helpful.

I'll definitely bring the wheel to my mechanic as Bill recommends and see
if he can get the tire on/off easily. If not, I may have to bite the bullet
and go back to OpenPros or A719s. Which means getting my brand new wheels
rebuilt, but...such is life.

Has anyone here run 44mm tires on OpenPros? I've often run 35mm knobbies on
those rims, but haven't tried anything wider.

Re: [RBW] "Winter" clothing help

2017-12-05 Thread lum gim fong
What works for me down into the 20'sF.:

Head (any mixture of these):
Wool skullcap
Wool balaklava
Wool cycling cap
Helmet (great wind blocker for me).
Sunglasses by day.
WalMart display clear plastic glasses at night.

Upper body:
Wool baselayer shirts.
J breatheable rain jacket (acts good as windshell so wind wont cut thru wool
layers) It is very vented. Not perfect but works for me on long rides. Without
it I can see redness on trunk where wind penetrated the wool. So the jacket has
been great for me.

Hands:
Any gloves that work. Doesn't have to be cycling specific. But rubber on
fingers helps grip brake levers.

Legs:
Wool baselayers.
Rivendell MUSA long pants.

Feet:
Leather Nike sneakers on flat pedals.
Wool socks.
I don't need two layers of socks until I get doen into the 20'sF.

Caveat:
After 30 miles in the cold my thighs and knees sometimes complain.
But sub-20 mile commutes and other riding I'm fine with any combo of layers
with the above.
For distance riding I'd definitely use wool tights with Boure tights over top.
Better for keeping legs warm so far on longer rides.

[RBW] "Winter" clothing help

Oh. I didn’t mention legs. I add fishnet longjohns below 10˚F, so figure you
need’t do anything. But if you do, just adding the fishnet longjohns will have
you set. I just let my legs get wet and dry. But I wear knickers and add knee
socks and then ventile gators (wind and wet) as needed, so really it’s just
thigh exposure I have.

With abandon,

Re: [RBW] "Winter" clothing help

2017-12-05 Thread Patrick Moore
Wool, wool, wool, and more wool, with for very cold weather some sort of
wind blocking garment; I have vests of varying weights and a cycling jacket
with zip off sleeves. But you could use a windbreaker, though I found
myself sweating a great deal as I rode -- which is why I like the zip off
arms.

Several thin layers are better than one thick layer; layers insulate
better, and you can add or remove to fine tune for comfort.

I rather like ss wool jerseys with wool arm warmers, but a ls wool jersey
over a base layer is nice, too.

Shoes: I use REI commodity wool socks in my cycling shoes; add plastic bags
over socks and under shoes if it's colder; add thin wool base layer socks
if colder; add shoe covers if colder still; have a pair of Lake boots for
coldest; but if you use regular shoes, all you need is a layer or 2 of wool
socks.

Head: I've got plenty of hair, so I need to protect just my ears: cycling
caps with flaps, or the inexpensive fake Peruvian wool or fake wool knit
caps with earflaps.

Gloves: DeFeet wool gloves down to 40 or so; then layer under a wind
breaking glove.

Your winter temps in Dallas can't be colder than ours in 5000 foot ABQ, NM,
so this ought to do you well.

[RBW] "Winter" clothing help

2017-12-05 Thread Deacon Patrick
Fred,

40 and dry, easy. 40 and wet, challenging. It’s all about moisture management.
In Colorado, when we have thunderstorms in spring, summer, and fall, temps
easly are in the 40’s or 50’s with high humidity (90+%).

The key to either begins with the baselayer. Fishnet longjohns.
https://www.brynjeusa.com

Depending on how warmblooded you are, on a dry day you may only need a thin
shirt over that (I wear a medium weight cotton flannel shirt over mind for
freezing up to 50’s.) No other layer required.

When wet, you have a choice. Dither and play with the synthetics trying to make
them work and spending a lot discovering they do not, or pony up once for
Ventile and/or Cotton Anlalogy from Hilltrek and be done with it.
http://hilltrek.co.uk When wind or wet or both get added to the mix, it’s spot
on what to wear as your outer layer. Breathes almost like a t-shirt, keeps wet
out, so you get wet neither from your sweat nor from rain/sleet/snow.

Gloves, get the boiled wool gloves from here:
https://www.sweaterchalet.com/dachstein-woolwear-boiled-wool-sweaters-mitts-socks-caps-gloves/
and you’ll be fine down to 25 or so. They have a leather palmed one if you
like. I just wear their mitten, no leather palm. Works great (15˚F on today’s
ride, no overmit needed). Also, their 3-ply hat is brilliant for those
conditions (4-ply is overkill by far). Socks too, but you may need larger shoes
or you’ll just cut off your blood supply to your feet and be VERY cold and
think the socks don’t work.) Or the hood on the jacket may be all you need.

Not light weight, but if you have to stop riding unexpectadly, you’ll be
comfortable and warm. Play with the layering, how heavy an insulative layer (I
switch to a sweater below 20˚F) and when to wear/not wear your ventile shell
and you’re golden and toasty.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Best Rack for a large saddlesack on a large frame?

2017-12-05 Thread George Schick
Another way to get around this problem is to use a Mark's mini-rack. You
can adjust its height to accommodate the saddlesack. Then, if you feel
that the bag overlaps the rack too much, you can make yourself a little
platform out of 1/4" plywood. I ride a 54cm frame so like Jay I have the
opposite problem, but I didn't like the way the bag sagged over the sides
of the rack. Here's photos:

Re: [RBW] Re: Bartubes discontinued

2017-12-05 Thread Shawn Granton
Joe-

While Ortliebs are indeed great and waterproof, I'd disagree that you *have*
to go that route for 'hardcore rainy commute riding". Canvas still works
great and that's primarily what I use in these rainy Cascadian winters. If
the bartubes had a more significant flap, the water most likely wouldn't
get in. I have an Acorn handlebar bag that is similar to the bartube, but
has a big flap protecting the zipper. So far, no issues.

Yes, water *resistant* would be the applicable term here, as the closure system
on varying Sackvilles will effect how each repels water. For hardcore rainy
commute riding, you'd need something like the stuff Ortlieb makes for those
conditions.

[RBW] Re: Bartubes discontinued

2017-12-05 Thread Shawn Granton
Regarding the waterproofness of the Bartube:
While it is true that the canvas is waterproof, the zipper isn't. And while
there's a "lip" over the zipper, this lip disappears if you fill the tube
up well enough, inviting the rain to get into the zipper pretty easily.

I had the Brand V version for a year or so and rode it in rainy Portland.
The rain getting in through the zipper was the main reason I sold it.

[RBW] "Winter" clothing help

2017-12-05 Thread Fred Craven
It's fast approaching winter I would like to keep riding to work. My
problem is that I don't have any appropriate winter cycling clothing. 30
years ago, I had some wool tights and jerseys, with layers that worked just
fine.

I can go "all cyclist" and get fancy winter cycling clothes on line or at a
LBS (We have several good LBS' in our area); however, I would like to keep
to the spirit of a stealth "Rivendell" look if at all possible. Currently I
layer up with various regular daily clothing. I don't have proper face
protection, and I don't have proper gloves...I don't have proper anything,
really. The wind simply cuts through.

I'm in the Dallas area, so we really haven't had much cold yet, but I would
like to be able to ride comfortably in the 40s. I know that many of you do
that. I'm open for suggestions.

[RBW] Re: Silver Shifter 2 project revived

2017-12-05 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
As a tenet of this group, we've always allowed members to express opinions.

If someone genuinely dislikes all the RBW designs, this probably isn't the
group for them, of course. But not everyone has to think everything is
awesome.

Nothing anyone makes is going to work for everyone, and if someone doesn't
care for the item, and takes the time to explain why, that aids the
discussion and may certainly cause folks to consider different
perspectives. That's a tenet of this group. We've always been open to
others opinion and value that which is based in actual experience.

"Yuck (because)" is the equivalent of "Awesome (because)".

It's the "because" which makes this group helpful rather than noisy.

What is not appropriate are personal comments. It never comes across well
in print and raises everyone's hackles. There is no place for it in this
group.

If you disagree with someone's statement, make your counter-case clearly
with courtesy. That's also a tenet of this group.

Ok... taking off the admin hat and getting back to work this AM...

Thanks for reading - and of course contributing to the discussion.

I rode the hi rider rack on my 56cm Toyo built Atlantis for like 2yrs, good
rack, handled any size load i needed it to. Bike handled as good as a mid trail
bike with heavy front load could handle. I still have it, its under my bed.

I rode it on two short tours, one from Sf to big sur and back, and once from sf
to la. It was fitted with swift mini roll top panniers, and a basket zip tied
to the platform, that's all I used, it worked great, that rack is really
strong. I actually used it quite a bit when I got a delivery job too. It's
pretty versatile when it comes to mounting on different bikes from what I
remember. If you're in the bay and want to check it out lmk

Well, yeah, probably technically at first glance not really in line. But
lots of Rivendell lovers can't afford a Rivendell--or more than one
Rivendell. And the company is an influential designer and distributor of
mixtes (and sorta mixtes), and it says in the "Rules" you don't have to
have a Riv, just an interest in Riv designs, and many folks buy an old
mixte for a hundred bucks then head to Rivendell dot com and load up the
cart with goodies so they can turn that 70s/80s UniPeuNiFuturion into
something resembling a Glorius or a BFoy or a Gomez or Wilbury or Cheviut.
I vote if Doug buys it and promises to deck it out with Albatrosses and a
basket and (red!) net purchased from Rivendell he can stay on the island.
Mixtes rock.
