Jim, yes 31.8 clamp. It's a Nitto UI-12 with a 60mm reach (they go up to
120mm reach). Got it from seller hobby_japan on ebay.

[RBW] Re: Alternative Bars for the Clem

2018-03-09 Thread tc
Wayne, the changes I experienced moving from the Bosco to the Jones on my
Clem include what I described earlier regarding a more natural leaning turn
(with Jones) rather than a feeling of pushing the bar to turn, as with the
Bosco and more upright bars that have grips that come straight back.

The Jones is wider, so you can get into a more athletic position with more
leverage -- which to me is more important off-roading. Your elbows are
pointed more outward, and it allows you to engage your lat's and feel
really locked in if you need that for stability, esp. on bumpy downhills.
However, the Jones also gives you like 5 different hand positions (similar
to Bosco, but different ones) so you're not limited to the wider grip. And
with the new Gnarwal attachment
Jones offers, you can even get into an aero position -- so sign up for a
tri :)

The Boscos that come standard on the complete Clem's are 55s, which are too
narrow for my comfort anyway. My elbows are tucked in; just doesn't feel
quite right to me.

Don't let the limited height of the stem scare you. The grips end on your
side of the stem with the 60cm reach UI-12, so even though you're lower,
unless you have extremely tight hams, glutes, and lower back, it shouldn't
be a problem. I'd say try it; you can always sell it if it doesn't work
out, and you won't have wondered "what if".

Hope that helps,
Tom

I've seen none, but, with the health benefits that are measurable by
typical "annual physical" measurements, and by how you feel, I'd say this

have to remember is that, with all of the proteins and fats you're

I thought about buying one of the V3 65cm frames when they were on
closeout, and even went so far as having them send me a CAD drawing with a
proposed saddle height and stem configuration. It seemed like it would be
a bit small for my preference, specifically on reach and bar height. I was
also worried about the final aesthetics on an 87cm saddle height. Plus, I
have several bikes that I really like, so I passed. It's interesting
though to see one for sale locally in Austin, but the problem for me right
now is that I'm not in a position to acquire another frame. Good luck on
the sale.

[RBW] Re: Roadini build and first ride report!

2018-03-09 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hello AKo!

Can you provide info on the size of your Roadini (57?, 61?) and the saddle
height in the picture? I think I saw that you also have a 60cm Cheviot
(correct me if I am wrong) and am curious of your thoughts so far.

Any opinions on the ride, the sizing, the build would be welcome.

Beautiful bike and build!

Thanks,

[RBW] FS: BMC Monstercross F/F/HS 65cm

2018-03-09 Thread Reid Echols
Hi folks,

Looks like I've got an Appaloosa on the way, so it's time to move on my BMC
Monstercross frameset. Really stellar frame; there's some definite Riv-ish
magic in it. It's the V3 in a really classy grey. No major nicks or scratches,
and clearance for days.

I'd like to get something like $400 plus shipping for it, to help offset the
cost of the new build. For reference, I'm 6'4" with a longish torso.

Here's a photo of it built up, I've got more if you're interested:

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met

2018-03-09 Thread Evan E.
Count me as another happy beneficiary of the EBDJ regimen. My HDL
cholesterol is now higher (that's a good thing) because of it.

If you're reading this and you somehow haven't already tried the EBDJ plan,
note two things:

1. "Paleo flu" is a thing. Know that for five, or ten, or twenty days after
you go low-carb, you may well feel sluggish, irritable, headachy. Stay the
course. It gets better.

2. In addition to coconut oil being awesome, coconut butter

is pretty great, too. It's pureed coconut meat, so it's not as oily as oil,
but it still contains plenty of oil and fat and calories. I find the butter
much easier to eat from a spoon than coconut oil. But the butter doesn't
melt easily into coffee, so you'll want oil for that. Add some grass-fed
butter to your coffee, too. Tastes good. People will think it's even more
disgusting than oil, alone, in your coffee.

[RBW] Re: What does a BMC Monstercross weigh?

2018-03-09 Thread Bill Lindsay

Here are the requested clearance photos. The tires are WTB Bronson 29x2.0
They read 50-622 on the casing. They measure a physical 52mm on HED
Belgium Plus 25mm rims with tubes pumped to high pressure (~40psi).

I have a set of brand new 29x2.1" Thunder Burt Snakeskins on another
wheelset that I can't test fit onto this frame. Those tires measure 54.5mm
on a different 23.5mm rim, set up tubeless at high pressure (~35psi).

I hope that tells you what you want to know.

Lum,

I unfortunately eat about 80% of my meals away from home. I say this to say
it is the easiest way of eating I have found to eat at every place I go. I
also can order directly off the menu most places without having to be "that

[RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal me

2018-03-09 Thread Deacon Patrick
Andy asked about floor living. No chairs. Bed is a platform bed with a thin
wool pad. The idea came out of what I learned going barefoot almost a decade
ago. Because of my bludgeoned brain I have constant neurological vertigo
(basically I feel like I’m on two planets simultaniously, each with constantly
changing gravity strength and direction, plus whatever my own motion is). What
barefooting taught me is my feet were weak because of shoes, rather than I need
more supportive, cushioned, raised heel shoes because my feet are weak. My body
learned to know, though the input from my bare feet, where I was in space. And
I began moving better, smoother, no more knee or back issues (which stemmed
from cushioned, raised heel shoes, I now know).

Anyway, I applied the same concept to furniture, realizing that the best nights
sleep I was getting was durring bikepacking. It took months (like shifting to
barefoot) for mymuscles and body to shift and strengthen and learn how to move
better, (and a year or so for full transition), but now the only chair I sit in
is the car seat and I sit corss-legged in that. Our whole family shifted to
floor living, and what we discovered is we feel constantly better, with strong
cores, lithe muscles, far fewer aches and pains.

Turns out science is catching up with this idea, though the solutions they come
up with miss returning to the simplest solution. All those studies that show
sitting in an office chair is bad for heart health, etc? Floor living. Grin.

Patrick

I had the crankset on hand waiting for a project worthy of it, mainly. It's
certainly unnecessary, but I also have a dingle and flip-side cog on this
giving a lot of possible gearing choices. The overall tooth calculations:

42 + 16 = 58 (72 gear inches)
36 + 16 = 52 (62 gear inches)
36 + 19 = 55 (52 gear inches)
36 + 22 = 58 (45 gear inches)
28 + 22 = 50 (35 gear inches)

2018-03-09 Thread Dave Grossman
Great thread all!

Congrats to all of you that have found success. I am found the same
success a couple of years ago with this method as well. I was gaining
weight and not feeling my best with a bunch of small kids to take care of.
In addition, I have an auto immune gut issue that was flaring on and off
for almost 16 years.

I decided to do a modified Paleo diet eliminating gluten, grains, and
refined sugars. It has done wonders for my life. I am back to my old
college hockey playing weight, have tons of energy, and feel great. My gut
has been in good condition throughout as well. I cheat and have some bread
once a week (a slice of homemade stuff) and that is about it. When I
travel and get off track I really feel it.

It is amazing how much your body can tolerate, abuse wise, through diet.
All of your stories about high weight, A1C, etc really speak on that. We
are all so used to feeling terrible from our modern diets that we don't
even know what healthy feels like anymore. Grant's book is great and while
I have a different variation of it, it speaks much truth. I do have a
sweet tooth and still eat sweets but they are made with maple syrup, honey,
almond flour, etc. I still want to enjoy that aspect of life, after all!

A 58cm Black Mountain Monstercross frame, with Cane Creek 40 headset

The fork with a crown race installed and an uncut threadless steerer is
 1057g

Use that data for whatever you like.

Re: [RBW] Re: Frank Jones Sr. Build - Ready to ride, if not complete

2018-03-09 Thread Patrick Moore
Jeremy: that's an elegant chainring and crankset. Question: Why 3 rings
instead of a Dingle and a flip-side cog? You get more gear ratio change for
your units of axle movement when you change the # of teeth at the rear,
compared to the front.

I've thought of commissioning a multispeed fixed hub from Phil (they said
they'd do it; though this was years ago) that would allow me to install 3
fixed cogs on one side. But the 17/19 or 17/20 Dingle have served my
purposes sufficiently.

[RBW] Re: Have a Sub 20lb Roadeo?

2018-03-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
Jay in Tel Aviv asked me to recommend wheels for his Roadini

I still think the HED Ardennes are still nice wheels for the price. The
price today is $700, but I don't know of another $700 wheelset that I would
prefer. It's a bummer you didn't jump on them when they were $350, but
they are still good wheels, in my opinion. You have to jump at deals when
you see them, if you want to get deals.

Here's the crankset. My shop had to machine down the TA chainring for a
better match to the shape of the crank spider. In the back, it's a White
DOS 19/19, and on the other side of the wheel a 22t freewheel.

By the math, assuming an 8t max adjustment range, it should work, but I
haven't yet tried the various gearings. I will need to adjust the wheel
fully forward in the dropout and get the chain JUST the right length for it
to have a chance to work with the granny gear.

[RBW] Re: Hunqabeam Quickapillar sighting

2018-03-09 Thread JohnS
To DP,

Looks like you've asked to have braze on mounts added to the seat stay or
were they always there? The QB/S1 drop out has a single rack/fender mount.
I got around it by drilling and treading a hole in the rack strut above the
original mount.

To Max S,

The Phill Wood hub has "axle" end caps of different lengths which can be
taken off with an Allen wrench. They end caps are not cheap, but nothing PW
is. There are a pair for 120mm and another for 130/135mm. They work great,
easy to change.

out!

Gorgeous. What are those interrupter levers? Modern guidonet levers of some

[RBW] Re: Have a Sub 20lb Roadeo?

2018-03-09 Thread Belopsky
I've decided to go bar-end on my Gunnar (snow and cold makes Igor work and
not ride bikes..) so I will be swapping bars and maybe stem and etc..

Without pedals, bars (but stem), shifters, cables my Gunnar weighs 19.8lbs
= 8981.13grams
Each tire (Maxxis Rambler 700x40) is said to weigh 400g so not that light
at all. If I go down to 35mm like the Bon Jon then that brings me down
to 8,797.13grams which is a good savings but regardless I don't know if I
could get this bike down to 21lbs or less?

I don't know what my Shimano RX100 levers weigh, or what the bar-ends and
cables would add, but bars are around 300g (I have a 31.8mm stem and
regular reach 31.8 are hard to find?) So anywho, that brings 9097.13g so a
tad over 20 without levers, shifters, cables and pedals, but sounds do-able?

Just finished a HS wrestling season (as a parent). Parents within the
region (in this case, one-fourth of Texas) get to know each other pretty
well from Thanksgiving to the end of February. Wrestler's diet is all
about controlling weight to make weight, daily burning calories to keep in
shape, and being able to short-term burn enough calories to perform. Over
the season, you chat with some very lean parents who've been sharing the
table with their wrestlers.

[RBW] How do ye determine your saddle height.

2018-03-09 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
Yes, for spd pedals, PBH-11cm works for me. For thin flats, like VP001 or Vice
or Catalyst, it is PBH-12 to 13cm. The obvious variables are shoe thickness,
your flexibility, and riding style. I would think those variables wouldn't
change saddle height by more than 1cm and probably less.

Joe, who has drunk the Catalyst pedal kool aid and will be selling other fine
pedals here, in GJT.

[RBW] Re: How do ye determine your saddle height.

2018-03-09 Thread Matt B.
PBH minus 11cm is a really good place to start, but many folks don't have a
good measurement of their PBH. Another good way to set saddle height is to
raise it to where your heels can not quite reach the pedals at the bottom
of the pedal stroke, but the balls of your feet can.

Either one of these starting points may wind up putting the saddle a bit
too high or a bit too low - so whichever method you use to set the saddle
height, you normally have to adjust it as you ride. One way to tell if
it's to high is to gauge whether your hips rock noticeably side to side as
you pedal. On the other hand, your saddle may be too low if the fronts of
your knees begin to hurt and your legs feel cramped as though you've been
doing the limbo dance.

For all-day riding, a correct/comfortable saddle height is sensitive even
to changes in footwear or pedals, i.e. it has to be within a cm of the
right spot or you'll feel it in your legs or back.

[RBW] Re: How do ye determine your saddle height.

2018-03-09 Thread Ron Mc
You're going to find it varies from bike to bike with different riding
positions.
The more roady drop-bar the bike, the straighter you're going to be above
the pedals, and the higher your saddle will be.
The more upright the bike, the farther forward you need your knees, which
means greater rear offset and shorter saddle height.
No matter your starting point, trial and error (in the positive sense) is
going to fine-tune it.

What would you get today for a hopefully not dumb Roadini?
